  • 23 inmates sit for 2019 UTME at Ikoyi Prisons

No fewer than 23 inmates of the Ikoyi Prisons School on Wednesday participated in the 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB)

A News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent who monitored the examination reports that the inmates showed enthusiasm on siting the examiners who had also turned up early enough to administer the examination for the candidates behind the bars.

The Principal of the facility’s school, ASP Ibikunle Idris, told NAN that a total of 25 of the inmates actually registered for the examination but that 23 sat for the examination.

According to him, out of the 25 that registered, nine of them were however discharged before the date for the examination.

Idris however stated that out of the nine that were discharged before the examination, seven of them came back to the facility to join others in taking the examination.

“Two of the nine that were discharged did not show up for the examination.

“But I must say the examination is a huge success. By our judgement, it was 100 per cent hitch free.

“The systems and the backups were all working at their best and on our part, we ensured the candidates were well relaxed while they wrote the examination.

“With the level of preparations we had for them prior to this examination, we will not expect anything short of 270 and above score.

“We would want to commend some NGOs such as the Good News Baptist Church and other volunteers who joined hands with us in preparing the inmates, including our own staff and inmates. It was a joint effort,” he said.

The Principal added that the Controller General of Prisons, Ja’afaru Ahmed, the former Controller of Prisons, Lagos Command, now Assistant Controller General of Prisons, Tunde Ladipo, had both showed great commitment in the overall welfare of the inmates.

“One of their cardinal focus has been to give support in the general welfare, empowerment and reformation of the inmates.

“The current Deputy Controller of the Ikoyi Prisons too, Tolu Ogunsakin on his own, has ensured that the inmates are given the best support in a bid to ensure that they carry on with their lives successfully whenever they regained freedom,” Idris told NAN

Some private varsities aiding academic corruption – JAMB registrar

The Registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, on Monday stated that some private universities were aiding academic corruption and decadence in the country.

Oloyede spoke in Abuja at the opening ceremony of a two-day summit on Nigerian private universities, themed, “Private University Education Delivery in Nigeria; Challenges and Opportunities,” organised by the National Universities Commission.

He said, “The government opened up the space a few years ago for private operators to come and complement government’s efforts at providing university education to Nigerians, but it seems like the aim is gradually being defeated.

“When you visit some private universities, you will be ashamed for Nigeria. From the structures, you will know that something is wrong. If you take a deeper look, you will discover more decadence and rot in their operations. Some of the proprietors choose to run the universities like a family business and it ought not to be so.”

NUC Executive Secretary, Prof. Abubakar Rasheed in his remarks said the commission was currently processing about 303 new applications for the establishment of new private universities in the country.

“Also, 208 out of the 303 applications are already on Step 3 in the processing of their applications, while 63 applicants are in Step 6, having submitted their completed application forms and strategic documents and are awaiting the first verification visit,” Rasheed added.

In the interim, JAMB said it had suspended 49 Computer-Based Test centres for various wrongdoings in the ongoing Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.

This is just as 649,922 candidates had yet to take their exams as of Monday, which was supposed to be the last day of the 2019 UTME.

The board, which disclosed this on Monday in a bulletin obtained from the office of the JAMB Registrar, noted that over 50 impersonators were also arrested by security operatives, some of who schemed with the proprietors of the CBT centres to engage in malpractices.

JAMB confirms arrest of 50 professional examination writers for impersonation

Fifty professional examination writers who sit for candidates in the ongoing Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) have been arrested, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), has revealed.

The board said the impostors were arrested nationwide following its intelligence gathering mechanism.

JAMB’s Spokesperson, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, disclosed this in the agency’s weekly bulletin.

Benjamin identified some of the professional examination writers as Master’s degree holders, postgraduate and undergraduate students of various tertiary institutions in the country.

He said the professional writers connived with owners and operators of its Computer Based Test Centres (CBT) to carry out the crime by engaging in multiple registrations where the fingerprints of the main candidates are captured side by side with that of the impostors.

The board has uncovered a group of professional examination writers who take the exams for prospective candidates for a fee.

As a result of intelligence gathering, over 50 of such writers have been arrested across the country.

The modus operandi of these UTME syndicates was confirmed when one of the kingpins was apprehended recently,” the bulletin said.

He said the culprit confessed to have done multiple registrations of his biometric along with several other candidates with the intention of sitting for them and collecting huge sums of money from the candidates.

This Development is the fundamental reason for the decision of the board to revalidate all biometrics of candidates that have taken the board’s examination in recent times.

This timely action would enable the board to not only fish out and dismantle these registration cartels and racketeers but also bring them to book along with their collaborators,” the bulletin said.

Also, Fabian said 1, 236, 316 candidates out of the 1.8 million registered has so far taken the examination.

A total of 1,886,238 UTME candidates are expected to sit nationwide. And, 1,236,316 candidates have so far taken their examination,” it added.

  • JAMB clears air on ‘clash’ between UTME, WAEC timetables

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says there is no clash between its timetable and that of the West African Examination Council (WAEC) as being widely speculated and criticised.

The JAMB Registrar, Is’haq Oloyede, said at an interactive session with Editors in Lagos on Tuesday, that there was no basis for such speculation because the organisation was holding annual meetings with the examination bodies to reconcile areas of interest.

“We meet annually with WAEC, NECO and others to reconcile because we have the same target of education development,’’ he said.

He said those attacking him and the system out of ignorance would not succeed in distracting him from pursuing the target of ensuring national development through sound education for Nigerians.

He explained that government slashed the registration fees for candidates from N5,000 based on advice from the Board, an action he said would encourage registration of more candidates for higher education and eventual national development.

Mr Oloyede enumerated various measures inimical to education development, including multiple registration, abuse of biometric system and other forms of corruption in the system.

The registrar said JAMB, under his leadership, was determined to clean the system with legitimate approach.

How JAMB officials escaped being burnt alive in Lagos – Oloyede

Two officials of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Examination Board were attacked by unidentified persons during the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination mock exam at a centre around the Lagos State Polytechnic in Lagos State.

JAMB Registar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, confirmed the development during an interaction with reporters on Monday in Abuja.

According to him, the police have commenced investigations into the incident.

Oloyede, who led the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, to monitor the UTME mock exam at some computer-based test centres in Abuja, said the officials would have been set ablaze but for the timely intervention of security officials at the venue.

The registrar, who said 157,000 candidates sat for the exam nationwide, added that the injured workers in Lagos were receiving treatment at hospital.

He said, “The very first sad thing that we noticed was that two of our workers were almost murdered in Lagos. There was an attempt on their lives around the Lagos State Polytechnic. For whatever reason, they poured petrol on them and were about to set them ablaze.

“The reason for this attack cannot yet be ascertained.”

He added that 698 computer-based test centres would conduct the UTME between April 11 and 15.

Oloyede said the board had delisted 14 CBT centres due to infractions such as technical hitches.

He said, “The centres which went to borrow computers for the exams have been stopped. We now have about 698 centres left.”

  • Only 157,631 candidates indicated interest in mock UTME – JAMB

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board said candidates who are yet to receive notification for its mock Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination may not have indicated interest at the point of registration.

The Head, Media and Information of the board, Dr Fabian Benjamin, made the clarification in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday in Lagos.

NAN reports that, of about 1.9 million candidates who registered for the 2019 UTME, which is computer-based, a total of 157,631 indicated interest for the mock as of the close of UTME registration on February 21.

“We have concluded plans for the conduct of this Mock UTME scheduled to hold on April 1.

“Some candidates have been saying they are yet to receive and print their notification slips for this mock examination. I think that has nothing to do with the board because all those who indicated interest to participate have all been notified.

“Again, some of them might have registered late. However, the examination is optional, and I do not think there is any cause to worry,’’ he said.

NAN reports that printing of notification slip of the main UTME will begin on April 2, while the examination will start from April 11.

  • JAMB reopens registration portal, announces new date for conduct of 2019 UTME

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has rescheduled the conduct of 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation examination (UTME) to 11th April.

The board also fixed 1st April for the conduct of its mock examination earlier scheduled for Saturday, 23rd March.

JAMB’s Head of Media, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, in Abuja.

The statement directed candidates to begin the printing of their UTME notification slips from 2nd April.

It stated that candidates can print the slips in any part of the country.

According to the statement, all candidates who registered for UTME are to ensure that they print their examination notification slips before the day of the examination, noting that no excuses would be entertained by the board.

The statement said: “The Board has scheduled to conduct the 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation examination (UTME) from Thursday, 11th April, 2019.

‘’Candidates are to begin the printing of the 2019 UTME notification slips from Tuesday, 2nd April, 2019. Candidates can print their slips anywhere.

All candidates who registered for the 2019 UTME are to ensure that they print their examination notification slips before the day of the examination as no excuses would be entertained.

‘’The public should note that the Board would not reschedule examination for any candidate.”

The board, in the statement, explained the rescheduling of the mock examination to April was due to certain circumstances beyond its control.

It urged candidates who had indicated interest in taking part in the mock examination during registration and have printed their mock examination notification slips not to reprint another one.

All the details on the slips remain the same except the examination date which is now 1st April, 2019,” the statement said.

The board has also reopened its registration portal to 41,063 candidates who have created their profiles and procured either the UTME or DE ePINS till Friday 15th, March.

The statement added that the portal will be closed by 12midnight of same day.

Nigerians would recall that the Board had closed the sale of its Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination and Direct Entry application document on Thursday, 21st February, 2019.

‘’At the close of the sale and subsequently close of registration portal, it was discovered that 41,063 candidates created profile and procured either UTME or DE ePINS but were unable to complete their registration formalities after initiating the process.

In view of this consideration the Board has opened the registration portal effective from Wednesday 13th March, 2019 for all candidates with either UTME or DE ePINS to complete their registration formalities.

The portal would be closed on Friday, 15th March, 2019 by 12midnight.

This opportunity is for only candidates who had created profile and procured UTME or DE ePINS before the close of registration portal as the sale of ePINS had since been closed.

Please endeavor to register before Friday midnight if you are holding any of the ePINS (UTME/DE),” the statement added.

  • UTME: JAMB candidates to write mock examination on March 23

UTME: JAMB candidates to write mock examination on March 23

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has scheduled Saturday, March 23 for the conduct of its 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) Mock exercise.

The board made this known in a statement, signed by its Head, Media and Publicity, Dr Fabian Benjamin on Tuesday in Abuja.

The board said that candidates were expected to begin the printing of their Mock Examination Notification slips from Wednesday, March 6.

It recalled that the mock examination was introduced in 2017 to give candidates the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the conduct of Computer Based Test (CBT), particularly, candidates who are not conversant with the use of computers.

It also stated that it would not want any candidate to be at a disadvantaged position, hence the introduction of the mock examination and other processes like the introduction of the nine keys without a mouse for candidates to use the computer with ease during the examination.

It went further that the mock exercise was aimed at ascertaining the readiness of its systems and to appraise candidates’ preparedness for the main examination.

This clarification, it stated, was necessary because of insinuations from some quarters that marks, from the mock examination would be added to scores obtained in the main examination.

The statement noted also, that the mock exercise, would not be used for any assessment process, while urging all candidates to guard jealously, all their particulars concerning both UTME and Direct Entry (DE) as they prepare for the process.

NAN recalls that the mock exercise was earlier scheduled for Feb. 23, but was however rescheduled due to the postponed elections by the Independent National Electoral.
