JAMB announces date for sales of 2017 Direct Entry, foreign candidates’ forms

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) will begin the sale of the 2017 Direct Entry forms and registration of foreign candidates on July 10.

JAMB’s Head of Public Relations, Fabian Benjamin, made this known in an interview with newsmen in Bwari, FCT, on Monday.

Mr. Benjamin said the process of registration for the Direct Entry was spelt out in the just concluded Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

He said candidates for Direct Entry were expected to have Advanced Level, Diploma or its equivalent, while foreign candidates must possess proof of residency abroad.

For the foreign candidates to be eligible to write examination in a foreign centre, you must have stayed in the foreign country for at least a minimum of six months.

You must have schooled there, you must have had your secondary education there; you must show evidence of having stayed there for period of six months.

If you have stayed in Nigeria and just fly to London to register, you are not eligible; you must have schooled or had your secondary education outside the country.

Not that you just finished Senior Secondary Certificate Examination in 2016, and you are rushing to the United Kingdom to go and write your examination,” Benjamin said.

He noted that measures had been put in place to ensure that candidates who wrote the previous examination and failed were not registered in foreign countries, unless they meet the guideline.

Benjamin explained that the Direct Entry would be sold at the same price previously pegged at N5,000, adding that the Board was yet to fix the price for application for foreign candidates.

We are discussing on that, we are looking at selling the forms at $100 (N31,525.00) for Africans and $150 (N47,287.50) for non-Africans,” he said.

He said that the JAMB Direct Entry was mainly for people who already possessed a diploma certificate and wished to do a programme in the university.

  • 85,000 candidates to sit for JAMB mop-up exam

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, has urged candidates who will sit for the mop-up test of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination on Saturday to print their e-slips.

The board had rescheduled about 85,000 candidates who registered late or had technical hitches during the conduct of the examination in May, to write the mop-up test on July 1.

In a statement signed by the Head, Public Affairs Unit of JAMB, Mr. Fabian Benjamin, on Wednesday, concerned candidates were asked to print their e-slips from Wednesday (today, from their e-mail addresses or the website of the board.

He said, “A bulk short message service has equally been sent to the telephone numbers provided by the candidates during the registration. The board implores the candidates to ensure that their e- slips are printed on or before the examination as no excuse will be entertained.”

We will conduct Supplementary UTME July 1 – JAMB

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Thursday said it had concluded arrangements for its supplementary 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

The board’s Head, Media and Information, Fabian Benjamin, said this in an interview with newsmen in Lagos.

According to him, the examination, scheduled for July 1, is to give candidates with issues of late registration and others opportunity to write the Computer-Based Test.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that results of the examination which earlier took place from May 13 to May 20 have since been released.

JAMB, on Wednesday June 14, also announced the cancellation of results of no fewer than 50,000 candidates over examination malpractice and other alleged infractions.

Dr. Benjamin urged candidates for the supplementary examination not to panic, but remain focused and confident.

The board is using the opportunity to charge affected candidates for the rescheduled examination not to panic, as text messages will be sent to their telephones, with which they used in registering for the examination, to the effect of their qualification.

There is really nothing to be afraid of or worried about. To this effect therefore, they should be expecting such notification before 12 midnight of Thursday, June 15. “Messages will also be sent to their e-mail addresses. Their profile will also contain the information as it had been updated.

In the same vein, all candidates whose results had been cancelled outrightly following their involvement in examination irregularities will also be notified through their e-mails, text messages as well as their profiles.

This set of candidates is not eligible for the supplementary examination,” Benjamin said.

According to Mr. Benjamin, candidates for the rescheduled examination will also be notified on the date and venue on or before Monday, June 19.

He said candidates could check their result status to avoid being extorted by fraudsters who might want to seize the opportunity to exploit them.

Mr. Benjamin noted that the examination body was taking extra steps to contact all rescheduled candidates for the examination to prevent them from falling prey to fraudulent persons.

Sequel to this therefore, the board is calling on members of the public, especially candidates, to avail themselves of the open door and inclusive policy of the board to seek clarification where the need arises, from any of our offices nationwide.

This rescheduled examination became necessary to ensure that no innocent candidate is unjustly punished,” Benjamin said.

  • 2017 UTME: Over 60,000 candidates to rewrite exam for alleged involvement in malpractices

2017 UTME: Over 60,000 candidates to rewrite exam for alleged involvement in malpractices

The Joint Examination and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has ordered a total of 62,140 candidates to rewrite the 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, for their alleged involvement in malpractices and other infractions.

The examination body also delisted some computer-based centres (CBT) from board examination as a result of technical deficiencies.

It also suspended 48 centres for one year due to technical issues. It however said the affected centres may be considered for 2019 exams.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the rescheduled exams will hold July 1.

This was revealed on Wednesday by the registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede at a press briefing after the board’s management meeting in Abuja.

According to Oloyede, the 62,140 cancelled results include of 57,646 candidates in centres-induced malpractice, 3,811 late registration, and 683 candidates who had biometric challenges.

The board also cancelled the results of another 2,052 individual candidates found culpable of examination malpractice.

Oloyede explained that the management meeting approved the “delisting of forty-eight (48) centres from participating in the board’s examination in future as a result of serious technical deficiencies, extortion, organised examination malpractice and other damaging infractions”.

He explained that the rescheduled examination was for candidates of centres with mass malpractice but who were deemed innocent.

“The rescheduling of examination is for: biometric non verification machine related issues, technical and log out issues, late registration, malfunctioning of servers at the centre and incomplete results,” he said.

According to the board, 1,722,236 candidates registered for the 2017 unified Tertiary Matriculation Board, which is the highest figure ever in the history of the exams.

JAMB releases 1,606,901 UTME results, withholds 76,925 over alleged malpractices – Oloyede

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released 1,606,901 results out of the 1,718, 425 that registered in the just concluded Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

The JAMB registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, said this at a news conference in Abuja on Wednesday.

Oloyede said the results were released within 24 hours of the examination, adding that the remaining 80,889 candidates results would be released soon.

He said it was also a deliberate act by the board to withhold about 76,923 results due to some alleged malpractices in some of the Computer Based Centres (CBT) where exams were held.

“Six weeks into the registration, we harvested in preparation for the exam about 1.7 million registrations.

“But so far, we have released the results of 1,606,901 candidates leaving us with a balance of 80,889.

“Out of this 80,889, we have deliberately withheld 76,925 results for further investigation because of alleged malpractices.”

The registrar said that results would henceforth not be released immediately from 2018 unless every issues pertaining to the conduct of an examination had been thoroughly looked into which depict the international best practices.

He added that results that had not been released would be released before the commencement of admission exercise.

He also said that supplementary examination would be conducted soon for candidates who had hitches in the registration and examination processes.

Oloyede attributed some of the hitches to some CBT owners and cyber cafe operators.

“Anybody whose biometric could not be verified will be allowed to do the supplementary examination.

“As at today, 640 candidates out of 1.7million candidates did not do biometric verification, reasons being that some fraudsters registered candidates across online.

“In this case, the students are not guilty of the offence and hence will be made to write the exam again under my own very eyes.”

Oloyede highlighted some of the exam malpractices to have been initiated by parents who pay heavily to buy fake questions for their wards.

He said others include deliberate shut down and disconnection of network by some CBT owners to access questions on the computers and also exploit candidates of their fortune.

“In the course of our monitoring, JAMB had to buy question for N20,000 and also cases where CBT centres approaches our staff promising N500,000 for them to give out questions.

“These are some of the challenges we experienced in this exam,” he said.

Oloyede, however, promised to introduce electronic jammers in subsequent examination to further reduce malpractices.

He also called on public and religious institutions to avoid letting out their premises to CBT centres as this create room for fraudulent practices.

He advised candidates having issues or any form of correction to go to designated JAMB CBT centres and do so for free.

  • 2017 UTME: No cut-off marks announced yet – JAMB

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says it has yet to release cut-off marks for placements into tertiary institutions for 2017 academic year, contrary to speculation by some Nigerians.

The Head, Media and Information, JAMB, Dr Fabian Benjamin, made the clarification in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Tuesday.

He said that the policy committee meeting responsible for the determination of cut-off marks had not met.

According to him, it is in the best interest of candidates and other critical stakeholders to jettison cut-off marks for the various courses that are currently being paraded.

`”We want to appeal to all candidates to jettison such speculations and engage themselves in more meaningful ventures that would add value to their future,’’ he said.

Benjamin said results of the just concluded 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) had since been released, with a few others still being previewed.

“”We want to appeal to Nigerians to understand that such candidates whose results are being previewed may not necessarily have participated in any malpractice.

“But rather, centres where they sat for the examination had issues during the conduct of examination.

“”These issues were reflected on the CCTV footage and this suggests why they must be carefully investigated before releasing such results,” he said.

According to him, a very disturbing and unfortunate case is that of a school in Abia where cables were seen to have been connected secretly to a distant hall for hired mercenaries to write for candidates.

“This is very unfortunate given the fact that the school is a missionary school and supposed to be a leading light against such vices.

“But, rather, it was conniving, supporting and indeed championing the evil course of examination malpractice,’’ Benjamin said in the statement.

He said such results would be treated in accordance with the provision of the law.

According to him, a task force has been inaugurated by the Registrar of the board, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, to look into all such issues and has since concluded the review of the CCTV footages and other evidences presented.

He said that the task force would forward its reports to the appropriate quarters for the scrutiny and onward release of all remaining results.

“We urge candidates to note that no result will be withheld without a cogent reason as this explains why we are taking time to ensure that those who are innocent are exonerated.

“Again, candidates are advised not to patronise any centre, office or shop for any service; please visit our offices in all the 36 states of the Federation and FCT for any complaint, enquiry or assistance.

“This is also because our attention has also been drawn to an illegal centre being operated near our Ikoyi Office in Lagos with the aim of defrauding innocent candidates.

“This centre collects all kinds of fees in cash for services that are even free. The general public should note that payments for any of our services are done via our TSA account with CBN and not cash.

“Anybody or group of persons requesting for cash from you is not from us,’’ the statement read.

  • 2017 UTME: We’ll monitor conduct via CCTV, sanction cheats accordingly – JAMB

2017 UTME: We’ll monitor conduct via CCTV, sanction cheats accordingly – JAMB

…debunks claims of addition of extra 40marks by National Assembly

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, says it will watch recordings of proceedings in its Closed Circuit Camera Televisions, CCTVs, during the just-concluded Universal Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME.

The board’s Head, Media and Information, Fabian Benjamin, said in a statement on Sunday in Lagos that such would enable it to detect places where examination malpractices actually occurred.

According to Benjamin, where there is any semblance of irregularities, the board will not hesitate to do the needful, that is, sanction the cheats.

Those who know they were involved in any acts inimical to our examination ethics should not celebrate as their inglorious days of punishment will soon surface.

Again, we want to seize this opportunity to debunk messages being circulated by those who do not wish our education well that the Senate has passed a bill urging the board to add extra 40 marks to candidates.

There is no bill anywhere, not even a motion has been tabled before the two chambers of the National Assembly on the board’s 2017 UTME performance,” the statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) said.

The board wants to state for the umpteenth time that our examination is not a ‘fail pass’ examination; it is a selection examination, so, it can never be said that there is mass failure.

It will be absolutely wrong for mischief makers to begin to analyse an examination that has just been concluded without even looking at the overall result.

We urge candidates to disregard all funny connotations online on their results as the board will not contemplate doing all that is being speculated as that will negate the ethics of an examination body as critical as JAMB.”

It added that the board’s major concern had always been to ensure that cheating during and after examination were reduced to zero level, and this, he said, the board had substantially achieved.

It also noted that in order to ensure that the 2017 UTME met international best standards of transparency, the registrar had constituted a taskforce with the mandate to examine the entire conduct of the examination

The statement said the taskforce was expected to look at the fortification processes done by the board, identify loopholes in various centres if any and consider cases that would require urgent action, especially those involving candidates.

According to the statement, the taskforce is also expected to investigate malpractice cases and recommend likely sanctions in accordance with the provisions of the Examination Malpractice Act.

One of the likely benefits of this taskforce which has renowned scholars and management staff is to ensure that it identified challenges to be addressed so that they don’t occur subsequently.

The board is determined to ensure equity and fairness to all candidates and will not hesitate to allow the weight of the law to deal with whoever is involved in any infraction,’’ it said.

  • More than 10,000 candidates caught cheating in Anambra – JAMB

More than 10,000 candidates caught cheating in Anambra – JAMB

The Joint Admissions Matriculation Board (JAMB) says more than 10,000 candidates caught for examination malpractices in the ongoing UTME in Anambra have been handed over to appropriate authority.

Lynda Nwachukwu, the Coordinator of the board in Anambra, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka on Saturday.

NAN reports that the all computer-based testing (CBT) mode 2017 UTME, which started on May 13 in 642 centres nationwide, ended on May 20.

Ms. Nwachukwu said the examination, which took place in 28 centres in the state, was successful.

“There was no disruption of the exercise in any of the examination centres,’’ she said.

The coordinator said the candidates adhered strictly to the requirements of the examination, adding that JAMB provided all the materials required for the examination.

NAN correspondent, who monitored the last batch of the examination, reports that some parents complained of system failure in some CBT centres in the state.

Eucharia Okonkwo, a parent, said her daughter, who wrote the examination at the St Mary’s High School Ifite-Dunu centre, could not complete the examination due to the faulty computer and network failure at the centre.

According to her daughter, many candidates could not complete the questions in record time because of the faulty system.

Ms. Okonkwo advised JAMB to plan well for examination in subsequent years to avoid the technical hitches that could give the candidates psychological trauma.

Mose Mojekeh, Head, Department of Marketing at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, told NAN on telephone that such system failure in UTME was not acceptable.

According to him, the hiccups could potentially deny young people from Anambra State university admission.

Mr. Mojekeh advised JAMB to urgently collate the number of candidates affected and set another examination for them.

He also decried the practice whereby JAMB sends officials from one state to supervise examinations in another state.
“Experience has shown that such officials do not care much about the candidates when problems arise, as they leave them to their fate,’’ the lecturer said.

He called on the management of schools, whose candidates experienced the computer failure, to take their complaints to the State Ministry of Education to present their cases.
JAMB concluded the 2017 CBT UTME on May 20.

2017 UTME: JAMB dismisses extension rumours as exam ends today

About 19,950 candidates will today (Saturday) participate in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME as the one-week examination rounds off in the country.

The Head of Information of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Dr Fabian Benjamin, who disclosed this on Friday, said a total of 1,698,835 candidates had so far taken the UTME, while the 19,550 were billed for final day, Saturday.

Benjamin, who noted that candidates should disregard some false information that JAMB was deducting marks, added that the board had watched all proceedings at the CBT centres across the country and any infraction would be sanctioned in accordance with the provision of the examination malpractice act.

He said, “The Board has not deducted any marks from any candidate and is not contemplating doing that as it is not a condition for sanction in any of the provisions of the law against malpractice.

Again, we call on all candidates to be mindful of fraudulent characters who will send misleading information to create panic. The Board will be concluding the 2017 examination on Saturday. The Board has conducted examination for a total of 1,698,835 candidates and the remaining 19,950 candidates will be sitting for the last day on Saturday.

Registration has not been extended except for those who had PINs but couldn’t register as of May 5 when we closed registration. This category of Nigerians is allowed to register and a date will be set aside for them to take their examination.”
