2017 UTME: Exam not postponed – Registrar

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has said that the UTME examination scheduled to commence from Saturday May 13 (tomorrow) has not been postponed.

The clarification was made in Abuja on Friday by the Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede in a chat with newsmen.

Oloyede therefore appealed to candidates to ignore such rumors, adding that candidates should not fail to sit for their exams tomorrow.

The Registrar, who disclosed that 120 prison inmates are part of the 1.7 million candidates that will sit for UTME, enjoined the candidates to go to their respective centres for the examination.

The registrar said that the examinations would still hold as scheduled except for those that have Seven Days Adventist service.

He also advised UTME candidates to always check their e-mails for further updates, noting that some candidates are fond of giving out their passwords and e-mail addresses to strangers in spite of several warnings from the board.

“Candidates should be aware of fraudsters who hide under cyber cafe operators to defraud innocent children.

“We have caught some of them while mischievously collecting money from candidates with the help of some security officers,’’ the JAMB boss said.

2017 UTME: Check e-mails, CBT centres for notifications, JAMB tells candidates

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has advised candidates for the 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, scheduled to commence from Saturday, to check their e-mails for notification of their examination centres.

JAMB’s Head, Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin, gave the advice on Thursday in Lagos.

Benjamin said the advice became imperative because of agitations by some candidates over non-communication on their examination centres by the board to them, less than 72 hours to the commencement of the all Computer Based Test.

He said that the board, commenced issuance of notification of examination centres through candidates’ e-mail addresses nationwide since Monday.

“Candidates are urged to note that the board had sent their notification to their e-mail addresses for them to go ahead and re-print.

“They can also visit any accredited CBT centre and re-print or log in with their e-mail addresses or registration numbers on our website, http://www.jamb.org.ng, www.jamb.org.ng, to re-print their notification which has their examination schedules.

“Candidates are, however, are not to pay more than N100 in these accredited CBT centres for this re-printing,’’ Benjamin said.

JAMB said that preparations for the smooth conduct of the examination had been concluded with all necessary logistics in place.

No fewer than 1.7 million candidates are expected to participate in the examination in 633 centres nationwide.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the exams will commence from Saturday May 13, 2017.

JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede told newsmen in Abuja that each test centre will have a supervisor, a technical officer, a verification officer, three proctors as well as security agents.

Each state will be superintended over by a head of a tertiary institution (Vice-Chancellor, Rector or Provost) who coordinates the supervisors under his or her jurisdiction”, Oloyede added.

It is certainly not going to be business as usual in the conduct of the Board’s examination and other processes.

In line with this resolution, the Board had secured through diligent prosecution, the conviction of two Nigerians who forged the Board’s results and came around for verification.

At the moment, we have lodged complaints against a number of Computer-Based Test, CBT, centre owners for one infraction or the other and a number of them were arrested, cautioned, while others are to be prosecuted so as to serve as a deterrent to others”, he added.

The JAMB boss warned candidates not to fall for the ploy of fraudsters who he said were out to defraud them.

  • 1, 736, 571 candidates set for 2017 UTME, say JAMB Registrar

1, 736, 571 candidates set for 2017 UTME, say JAMB Registrar

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) said it registered a total of 1, 736, 571 candidates for the 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), which marked a deviation from the past.

The Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, disclosed this at the news briefing with newsmen on Tuesday in Bwari, in preparations for the conduct of this year’s UTME.

Oloyede, who gave a breakdown detail of duly registered candidates for the UTME, said that the total figure marked deviation from the past, in terms of registration.

“In the last UTME conducted in 2016, a total of 1, 272, 284 candidates registered for the 2015.

“The figure for the 2017 UTME shows an increase of 464, 287 applicants when compared with last year’s figure of 1, 272, 284,” Oloyede said.

He said that Imo state had the highest applications having 101, 868, this was followed by Osun, Oyo, and Ogun with 88, 655, 87, 811 and 81, 349, respectively among the top ten.

    Others include, Delta – 81, 108, Anambra – 77, 253, Kaduna – 72, 104, Kano – 70, 276, Kogi – 70, 150 and Benue – 68, 916.

He also said that a total of 321 visually candidates registered to partake in the examination and that adequate arrangement had been provided to ensure their effective participation in the exam.

He mentioned that frontiers had been expanded to deal with perceived challenges associated with conduct of the examination, to hold in 624 centres nationwide, as against 524 centres recorded last year.

He decried lack of valuable information on JAMB activities; Computer Based Test (CBT) and misconception cut-off point were major challenges to have affected the Board’s image negatively.

According to him, many parents and candidates have not recovered from what many called “technophobia” the fear of technology, which makes them think CBT method is cumbersome.

“By providing information and enlightenment before, during and after the examination, with support from government and the media, I believe that our candidates and other stakeholders will be empowered.”

He said that cut-off points was not set by JAMB, but by policy committee been chaired by the Minister of Education with the Board, Vice-Chancellors, Provost of Education and Polytechnic Rectors.

He described cut-off points to be a minimum requirement and not an indication that one was admissible

He reiterated the Board’s resolve to prepare more after learning all the lessons from its past to organize for a successful examination.

“Following the continuous determination to curb the incidence of examination malpractice and other related offences, we will use the Biometric Verification Machine to verify candidates before admitting them for exam.”

He, however, warned candidates to desist from seeking reposting from exam centre assigned to them to another, adding that there would be no rescheduling of examination.

  • JAMB: 321 visually impaired candidates to take 2017 UTME

JAMB: 321 visually impaired candidates to take 2017 UTME

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) said it has registered 321 visually impaired candidates for the 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

The Head, JAMB Information and Media, Dr Fabian Benjamin, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday in Bwari.

Benjamin said that the figure was higher than the 201 candidates registered for the examination in 2016.

He said that adequate arrangement has been made for the visually impaired candidates to participate fully in the forthcoming UTME.

According to him, the board used to conduct the Computer Based Test (CBT) using Braille Apex Machine, but most of them complained about its usage.

“They said they do not know how to use these machines: we are going to bring all visually impaired persons to come and write the exam in a particular location.

“It could be Digital Bridge in Lagos or Digital Bridge in Abuja.

“One of the things we have always done for them is to ensure that the few of them that meet the minimum requirement get it.

“We encourage universities to admit them; we also give them courses that they want to read, so that we can give room for inclusiveness.

“So that is our preparation as it relates to visually impaired candidates; they are 321 that is 18 per cent of the 1.7 million candidates that registered for this year’s UTME,” the JAMB’s spokesman said.

The visually impaired candidates who sat for the 2015/2016 UTME practiced with the Braille Apex machine at their respective centres a day before the main examination.

The practice was also done in the 2015 edition of the UTME through the use of CBT platform.

He explained that the Board often encourage universities to offer admission to visually impaired candidates who met the basic requirement, saying that 2017 will not be an exception.

Benjamin said plans were underway to employ the services of experts in the field of education, to be able to achieve the desired goal.

“We will get some of Nigeria’s best hands in some of those various subjects that they are going to write; these are professors, and people with integrity.

“They will sit down together with the visually impaired candidates; ask the candidates questions, assess them and then rate them, so it is that rating that will be used for admission purposes.”

On preparation to hold the UTME on May 13, he said all hands were on deck to conduct a hitch free exercise.

He noted that the Board did not receive any complaint about irregularity in the course of registration of candidates, as being alleged in certain quarters.

“There is no complaint from anybody; we have passed the stage of registration, we registered 1.7 million candidates, so if there are issues, we will not have arrived at that number.

“The hitches that we had were experienced at the initial stage of registration, which was basically as a result of non-compliance with our instruction.

“We have made necessary effort to ensure that those instructions are adhered to, there is no complain as regards registration again across the country,” he added.

He, however, said that the posting of candidates to their various examination centers would start from Tuesday May 9.

  • JAMB assures candidates of getting examination centres before exam date

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has advised candidates for Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) not to panic over the delay in getting their examination centres.

Dr Fabian Benjamin, the Head of Media and Information of the board gave the advice in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Abuja.

Benjamin said although the crosschecking of prospective candidates data would end by 9p.m on Saturday none of them has been given examination centre.

He said that candidates would be given their examination centres before the examination date.

“Candidates are just concluding their registrations, so no one has received centre for the examination starting from May 13.

“Hopefully by next week they will start getting their centres, so there is no cause for worry,” he said.

He, nevertheless, urged all the UTME candidates to always check their emails for further updates.

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board said it had so far registered more than 1.7 million candidates for the 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination across the country.

  • UTME: Crosscheck submitted information before 9pm Saturday, JAMB tells candidates

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has advised candidates for its Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) to crosscheck the information on their registration forms for the last time today.

The deadline is 9 pm today 6 May.

The board’s Head of Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin gave the advice in an interview with the newsmen on Saturday in Lagos.

The advice comes ahead of the 2017 UTME scheduled for May 13 across 633 centres nationwide.

The registration of candidates for the examination was closed by the board by 12 midnight on Friday, May 5.

According to Benjamin, the call for the crosschecking of data by prospective candidates was to ensure total inclusiveness.

He added that the board intended to ensure that no candidate was left out during the examination due to one reason or the other.

“All candidates who desire to do any change on their registration details are urged to do so today as the platform closes finally by 9 p.m. of Saturday May 6.

“We are giving all the candidates the last chance to ensure that everyone is carried along and provided with equal opportunity.

“We also want to avoid a situation whereby candidates will have cause to complain of one incident or the other just before the commencement of the examination,’’ Benjamin said.

  • JAMB registers over 1. 5 million candidates

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, (JAMB) said it had so far registered 1.5 million candidates for the 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) across the country.

The Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, disclosed this in an interview with the newsmen on Saturday at side line of activities marking the pre-JAMB mock examinations.

It will be recalled that the JAMB mock examinations earlier scheduled to hold on Saturday May 8 had been postponed to ensure smooth conduct of the exam.

Oloyede said: “So far, it has even been better than our expectation, it was a mock, the intention was to test the technology and it proved to be perfect.

“I think from what we are seeing, we are more than ready for the main examination.

“At least 90 per cent of the examination centres have reported positively, there have been proper downloading and preparation; even after the exam we had uploaded responses of 80 per cent.

“We have done it to show that what works elsewhere across the world should work in Nigeria; we believe we can do it efficiently; we will continue to do our best.

“We have registered over 1.5million candidates in less than five weeks; we believe that the reality we have put in place is good enough.’’

Oloyede said that 633 centres were used to conduct the mock examination for 153, 000 candidates across the country.

In separate interviews, some of examination centre coordinators and candidates lauded JAMB for the mock initiative geared towards equipping the candidates to do better in the main exam.

Mr Abdul-Aziz Olasoyinka, Technical Research Officer of Digital Bridge Institute, commended JAMB for the mock examination.

He said it was apt in terms of preparation for future exams.

Olasoyinka said: “Mock is a good experience because it will help the candidates to adequately prepare for the forthcoming examination.

“It helps to evaluate how well the candidates have prepared and to improve themselves ahead of time.”

Mr Olajide Adisa, Director of Outstations at JAMB, said although there were 230 capacities at the Computer Based Test (CBT) centre, plans were on to upgrade to 250 them before the main exam.

“Even with that our specification is that at least we should have 10 per cent of same capacity as back-up in case of any breakdown.

“We have already put measures in place to test them in the course of the mock examination, they will be ready before the main examination,” Adisa said.

A candidate, Miss Hadiza Abdullahi, told NAN that the mock examination had improved her level of confidence ahead of the main exam.

She described the examination as encouraging, adding that she expects to sit for the main examination well-equipped.

Abdullahi, however appealed to the board to put measures in place to enable candidates wanting to register for future exam to do so with ease.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the mock examination held in three sessions, including the JAMB headquarter and CBT centre in Kogo community.

  • JAMB seeks Nigerian army to secure UTME exam centres

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has pleaded with the Nigerian Army to help secure its computer based tests (CBT) centres for the unified tertiary matriculation examination (UTME).

According to a statement by the agency’s spokesperson, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, the registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, disclosed this at a meeting with the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Tukur Buratai in Abuja.

Oloyede solicited for the intervention and cooperation of the Nigerian Army in the coming examination.

“We are here to thank you for the wonderful job you have been doing, all Nigerians are happy with you for the wonderful feat you have recorded in the discharge of your duties, and your quest for an indivisible and united country,” he said.

“This need became imperative to seek for security intervention from the Army, particularly in turbulent areas”, he added.

The Registrar said over 678 centres across the country would be put to use with an estimated 1.5million candidates for the examination.

  • JAMB suspends mock examination over technical hitches

JAMB suspends mock examination over technical hitches

…to announce a new date later

Prof. Is’haq Oloyede, the Registrar, Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), has announced the suspension of the board’s mock examination due to some circumstances beyond its control.

Oloyede, in a text message sent to the supervisors at the various centres in the FCT on Saturday in Abuja, expressed regrets at the inconveniences it might caused the public, especially the candidates.

He said that a new date would be communicated to them later.

The examination, scheduled to hold on Saturday in some accredited centres across the country was shifted, infuriating many candidates.

The mock examination, which is not compulsory, was designed to acquaint prospective candidates on the application of the examination and its processes using the Computer Based Testing (CBT) mode.

A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), who monitored the examination in some parts of Lagos, reports that candidates reported at their respective centres as early as 5.00 a.m.

In one of the centres in Ikeja, candidates waited patiently till about 2.00 p.m. for the examination to start.

NAN reports that when an official of JAMB at the centre was approached to ascertain why the examination had yet to start, he said that the centre was experiencing network problem.

Not long after that, the official, who pleaded anonymity, told NAN that information reaching him indicated that the examination had been postponed nationwide.

He added that the postponement was due to “some unforeseen circumstances’’ and that a new date would be communicated to the prospective candidates.

The official, however, said that JAMB regretted the development and pleaded for understanding.

The information was later communicated to the candidates, who expressed their disappointment.

One of the candidates told NAN that it would be good for JAMB to avoid a repeat of the development during the normal examination.

“Imagine what just happened; we have been waiting here as early as 6.00 a.m. only for us to be informed that the normal examination will no longer hold.

“I feel disappointed even though it is a trial examination, but at the same time, it is an eye opener for the organisers to be on their toes, get it right before May 6,’’ the candidate said.

Another candidate, Samuel Joel, called on JAMB to do the needful in order to allay the fears that the development might have raised.

Joel said that the country had come a long way to be having such challenges.

“I do not really know the main reason for the postponement of the mock examination, but I just think that somewhere somehow, things did not just turn out well.

“I am not happy going home now without doing the examination after waiting for about eight hours.

“Whatever it is that was responsible, it should be tackled as quickly as possible to in order to regain the confidence of the candidates,’’ he said.

At the Christ the King College (CKC), Gwagwalada, FCT, one of the mock examination centres, candidates were sighted waiting patiently for the examinations.

NAN reports that some of the candidates that failed to come to the centre with their examination print out had found it difficult to identify their seat number.

Mrs Rachael Angulu, the JAMB supervisor of the centre, however, advised candidates to print out their mock form before coming to the centre.

Another candidate, Miss Sarah Adeniyi, who spoke to NAN, said she arrived at the centre as early as 6.30 a.m. and as at 1.30 p.m., she had not been allowed into the premises.

“I am so tired and hungry. I rushed down here thinking they would keep to time. Look at us under the sun since morning.

“I just feel like forgetting about this whole mock examination,” she said.
