Leading debate on the bill when presented for second reading, Chief Augoye argued that the bill became necessary, arising from his personal experience when he was the State’s Commissioner for Works.

Augoye emphasised with deep concern how individuals and groups destroy and vandalise public properties such as roads and public schools expected to serve the interest of the general public.

  • EXCLUSIVE: Okowa has anointed Oborevwori as his successor – Aide

EXCLUSIVE: Okowa has anointed Oborevwori as his successor – Aide

Despite strenuous denial that Delta State Governor, Senator (Dr) Ifeanyi Okowa has not anointed any candidate for the gubernatorial flag of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), indications are emerging that the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Chief Sheriff Oborevwori is his favoured aspirant to succeed him.

A very reliable top source close to Governor Okowa, who nonetheless wants his name out of print, for now, has revealed.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the source revealed that Governor Okowa after wide consultation and consideration has settled on Oborevwori as his preferred candidate to be the gubernatorial flagbearer of the PDP for the Delta State 2023 governorship election.

The choice of Oborevwori by Okowa may have foreclosed the aspiration of other members of the PDP, including the immediate past commissioner for works of the State, Chief James Augoye, who has dropped his guber ambition and opted to contest for a seat in the State House of Assembly instead.

Other frontrunners in the PDP, who may have had their aspirations hampered as a result are Olorogun Kenneth Gbagi, Senator James Manager, Barr. Kingsley Otuaro and Senator Emmanuel Aguariavwodo, some of whom have already secured the nomination form of the PDP for the 2023 governorship election.

According to the source, Oborevwori is now poised to slug it out for the votes of delegates as Governor’s choice at the PDP governorship primaries that will hold later in the year. He will slug it out with Olorogun David Edevbie, who is former Governor James Ibori’s preferred candidate.

“Yes, I can confirm to you that the die is cast. The Speaker is Governor’s choice, but our leader [referring to former Governor James Ibori] and the Governor have not been able to reach a common ground.

“So, what we are going to see is that Oborevwori and Edevbie will go head to head for the 2023 governorship ticket of the PDP in the primaries,” the source told TNG.

However, the source declined to accept that the adoption of Oborevwori by Okowa has precluded any member of the party that is interested in the governorship ticket from contesting. Our source stressed that it only means that those aspirants have no backing whatsoever.

“No one can be deprived of contesting for the governorship ticket of the PDP. The primaries will be open to all and transparent in accordance with the rules of the party. It is free for all even as Governor Okowa has promised.

“And of course, the Governor has the right to go for the aspirant of his choice. It only means that other aspirants do not have backing whatsoever. But the primaries will be free, transparent and fair,” the source disclosed.

2023: Augoye drops out of guber race, opts for House of Assembly

Meanwhile, indications have also emerged that the immediate past commissioner for works of Delta State, Chief James Augoye has dropped his ambition to contest the 2023 governorship election of the State.

TNG reliably gathered that Chief Augoye dropped the ambition of contesting the 2023 gubernatorial polls after meeting with Governor Okowa, and opted to contest for a seat in the Delta State House of Assembly, following negotiations with the governor.

It was also reliably gathered that after the meeting with Okowa, it became obvious that the Governor has had his mind fixed on the Speaker of the State House of Assembly as his choice aspirant for the governorship election.

“Actually, Augoye had always been in the picture. But with Okowa’s meeting with him very recently, it became more obvious that he is not the Governor’s choice.

“He is left to go for the House of Assembly if he so wishes to go for an elective position. Since there is no strong contender for the Okpe State Constituency, it was advisable for him to seek to be elected in that capacity.

“But, as I have said, the governorship race is an open field for all aspirants to contest. Any aspirant who wants to throw his or her hat in the ring is allowed to do so. No one is barred from contesting the PDP governorship primaries,” the source told TNG.

  • 2023: Delta Central elders ask Gov Okowa to disregard DC-23 screening exercise in leaked confidential letter

2023: Delta Central elders ask Gov Okowa to disregard DC-23 screening exercise in leaked confidential letter

Some prominent elders from Delta Central Senatorial District under the aegis of Delta Central Political Elders and Leaders of Thought (DCPELT) have asked the State Governor, Senator Dr Ifeanyi Okowa to disregard the outcome of the screening exercise carried out by the lobby group known as DC-23.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the elders asked Governor Okowa to disregard the outcome of the screening exercise carried out by a DC-23 committee in a leaked confidential letter DCPELT wrote to the Governor.

Recall that DC-23 had picked Olorogun David Edevbie, Olorogun Kenneth Gbagi and Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori as their preferred aspirants to bid for the 2023 governorship ticket of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

However, DCPELT in the leaked confidential letter signed by Dr. Adogbeji Ideh, Chief P. O. Akaighe and Chief Eddie Ono-Sorhue told Governor Okowa that the outcome of the screening exercise does not reflect the yearnings of Deltans.

The elders in the letter accused the DC-23 screening committee of manipulating the screening exercise to deliberately exclude the “best of the lot” and foist persons of questionable character on the PDP in what they described as a political ambush to serve selfish interests.

The elders asked Okowa to disregard the final shortlist by DC-23, especially on the basis that the screening committee members were financially induced heavily by the beneficiaries of the DC-23 screening.

They strongly canvassed for further assessment of intending governorship aspirants, including Chief James Augoye, Senator Emmanuel Aguariavwodo and Omizu Ejaife Odebala on the basis of competence, experience, loyalty and vision of purpose, using recognised organs of the PDP.

The leaked confidential letter reads: “We write to you under confidential cover as DELTA CENTRAL POLITICAL ELDERS AND LEADERS OF THOUGHT mutually desirous of a smooth transition that will usher in your successor of Urhobo extraction, in line with what is commonly referred to as the Zoning Formula of the Ruling PDP in Delta State.

“We firmly believe that it is quite expedient that such a person should possess remarkable integrity, reasonable competence, requisite experience and general acceptance of the electorate that can consolidate on your laudable achievements of the SMART Agenda and unite the State.

“We wish to therefore dissociate ourselves from the subject, which has expectedly generated needless controversy, capable of creating further disaffection within the Party due to the manipulative selection process eventually deployed by the Screening Committee of the lobby group DC-23, deliberately designed to exclude the “best of the lot” and foist persons of questionable character on the Party in a political ambush to serve selfish interests.

“We have indeed received several reports of mouthwatering monetary inducements of the Screening Committee members by the beneficiaries of this charade and wish to crave your indulgence to carry out an independent investigation to substantiate the veracity of this weighty allegations, in order to properly guide your anticipated action on this issue.

“We are strongly canvassing for further assessment of intending governorship aspirants on the basis of competence, experience, loyalty and vision of purpose, using recognised organs of the Party, which we also believe that the Final List would not ordinarily exclude the likes of Sen. Emmanuel Aguariavwodo, Chief James Augoye and OmizuEjaifeOdebala, going by their known antecedents, expressed intentions and ongoing consultation efforts.

“We are therefore soliciting your kind cooperation to disregard the outcome of the exercise conducted by the DC-23 lobby group in the true spirit of fairness by deploying available instruments of your office as the State Party Leader, towards ensuring the emergence of a flagbearer that meets the yearnings and aspirations of most political stakeholders in the current dispensation, all in a bid to guarantee victory for the Party at the general elections next year.

“We remain committed to your patriotic quest of finishing strong and bequeathing a lasting legacy to all Deltans”.

  • BREAKING: Augoye rejects DC-23 three-man shortlist, says “I’m still very much in governorship race”

BREAKING: Augoye rejects DC-23 three-man shortlist, says “I’m still very much in governorship race”

Chief James Augoye, immediate past Commissioner for Works of Delta State has rejected the three-man shortlist of Delta Central 2023, a political lobby group, otherwise, known as DC-23.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Chief Augoye, who made this known while addressing newsmen on Sunday in Asaba, capital of the State, stressed that he is still very much in the race for the 2023 governorship election of Delta State.

The frontline governorship aspirant said he subjected himself to the DC-23 exercise to fulfill all righteousness, stressing that the outcome of the political pressure group’s screening exercise is not final.

Augoye said he has the mandate of Deltans to represent them as Governor come 2023, and that throwing in the towel at any point when the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) was yet to conduct primaries would mean letting Deltans down.

Augoye stressed that candidates for elective positions in Nigeria are determined by political parties and not political pressure groups. He, therefore, urged his teeming followers in the State, across the federation and in the diaspora to remain calm, focused and stay the course.

“The outcome of the screening exercise of DC-23 has been brought to my notice. The outcome is not surprising. The screening committee had its job cut out.

“I shared my ideas and plans for the growth and development of Delta State with the committee. I was able to prove to the committee that I am the best choice for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to win the 2023 governorship election in Delta.

“I told the committee that I am not only contesting the governorship election on a personal mandate, but on a collective mandate of Deltans. Deltans have reposed their trust on me. They have given me their mandate. So, I cannot let them down.

“Even, our amiable Governor, His Excellency, Senator (Dr) Ifeanyi Okowa and other leaders of our great party, the PDP have agreed that the governorship primaries would be free for all, fair and transparent.

“Moreover, I subjected myself to the screening exercise to fulfill all righteousness. The outcome of the screening is not final. As enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, only a political party can present a candidate for election, not a pressure group.

“On these grounds, I am still very much in the race for the 2023 governorship election of Delta State. We will see at the primaries. At this time, I urge my teeming followers at home and in the diaspora to remain calm, focused and stay the course,” Augoye said.

TNG reports the screening committee set up by DC-23 submitted its final report on Sunday. The committee recommended Chief Sheriff Oborevwori, Chief David Edevbie and Olorogun Kenneth Gbagi for DC-23.
