Heavy fight in Delta APC, as Ibori, Omo-Agege reportedly battle for control

Ex-Delta Governor, Chief James Onanefe Ibori, and immediate past Deputy Senate President, Obarisi Ovie Omo-Agege are reportedly enmeshed in a Titanic battle for the control of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

The battle, which has snowballed into a cold war, has reportedly polarized the APC into factions, with each of the two gladiators insisting that the leadership of the party belongs to each of them.

Findings revealed that the state chairman of the party, Chief Omeni Sobotie, reportedly suffering from an unknown ailment, has been dragged into the tussle, with Ibori and Omo-Agege demanding loyalty from the chairman.

Sources claim that the battle for the control of party became intense after Ibori’s daughter and member representing Ethiope federal constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon Ehriatake Ibori-Suenu decamped from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) recently.

Although Omo-Agege was in Oghara, headquarters of Ethiope West Local Government of Delta State, ostensibly as leader of the APC to welcome her to the party, insiders maintain that all is not well with the party.

The former DSP, who was the governorship candidate of the APC in the 2023 general election in Delta, has reportedly been trying to maintain control of the party, insisting that all structures must subordinate to his leadership.

However, Ibori, who was responsible for Omo-Agege’s entry into politics, was said to be using his relationship with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to ensure full control of the party, a development said to have unsettled the former DSP and his supporters.

The former Governor, although still retaining his membership of the PDP, has reportedly leveraged on his relationship with the President to secure key appointments at the federal level for his allies, including his daughter, who was appointed chairman of the NDDC committee in the House of Representatives.

By contrast, Ibori has allegedly blocked Ovie Omo-Agege and his associates from getting federal appointments, insisting that he, and not DSP, should be the clearing house for appointments for APC members in APC.

A reliable source disclosed that the present crisis in Delta APC was caused by the rivalry between the two gladiators, but maintain that DSP may have lost out of the power game.

“Everyone knows President Tinubu does not like Omo-Agege. None of his men have been given appointments by Abuja. But we all know Chief Ibori is a friend of Aso Rock. He is always with the President. That’s why we all want him as leader of our party.

“Omo-Agege has virtually lost out. But, he is still fighting to control the party. It will not work because all the major stakeholders and appointees at the federal level are not with him. I can tell you that DSP is a drowning man”, disclosed the source.

It is yet to be known how the crisis in the APC would be resolved as Ibori was also said to have started moves to make Olorogun David Edevwie, a trusted ally, the next governorship candidate of the APC in the 2027 election, a development said to have infuriates Omo-Agege.

    Ex-Gov Ibori, Omo-Agege mourn over Utuama’s death

Former Governor of Delta State, Chief James Onanefe Ibori has said he would have halted the death of a former Deputy Governor of the State, Prof Amos Agbe Utuama, if it were within his power to do so.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Prof Utuama, who served as Delta’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice during the tenure of Chief Ibori, died at the age of 77 in the early hours of Saturday in Warri.

In his tribute, Ibori described the late Utuama as a humble, loyal aide who executed his duties with utmost professionalism during his lifetime.

“Professor Amos Agbe Utuama, my humble, loyal, and esteemed Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice. You were my steadfast legal foundation, executing your duties with unwavering commitment. If it were within my power to halt death, I would have done so for you. Farewell, dear Professor. May your pure soul rest in eternal peace,” Ibori stated.

Born on June 5, 1947, Utuama served as Deputy Governor from 2007 to 2015 during the two-term tenure of Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan.

Omo-Agege mourns, says Utuama was a defender of rule of law

Meanwhile, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege has described Professor Amos Agbe Utuama as a legal luminary that distinguished himself in fighting for the rule of law to prevail in all affairs of state and levels of government.

Utuama, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) who was Deputy Governor of Delta State between 2007 and 2015 when Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan was governor, passed at 77 years.

Earlier, the professor of law in University of Lagos was Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Chief James Ibori’s administration in Delta State.

Former Deputy President of the Senate, Ovie Omo-Agege, while reacting to the death of the legal luminary said Prof. Utuama was one of the persons that headlined the emergence of a stable federation at the onset of the Fourth Republic.

“Having come into Chief Ibori’s government as a accomplished law teacher, Prof. Utuama was very instrumental in using his stature to instill a level of stability and respect for states at a time the Fourth Republic was still wobbling as a Federation where different political parties held sway in different states.

Senator Omo-Agege said: “I recall the days where Chief Ibori initiated the legal battles that preceded the commencement of the payment of 13 percent derivation fund as enshrined in the Constitution. Prof. Utuama’s stature and  expertise drove the legal process that gave victory to the Niger Delta states,” the former Deputy President of the Senate said in his tribute to the late Deputy Governor.

“Indeed, the Niger Delta, not just Delta State,  has lost a great son. His legacy will never be forgotten and Nigeria was lucky to have had him in government at the time his calibre was desperately needed,” Omo-Agege stated.

He commiserated with the Urhobo nation, Delta State and the Niger Delta region on the death of the former Deputy Governor.

LG autonomy: Niger Delta leaders question ex-Gov Ibori’s position

Reactions have continued to trail the recent Supreme Court judgement granting financial autonomy to the 774 local government councils in the country.

Prominent Niger Delta leaders led by Goodnews Abalagha, have disagreed with former Delta State Governor, James Onanefe Ibori for his stiff opposition to the verdict.

Speaking, Abalagha expressed disapproval of Ibori’s comments, questioning what the former governor stands to gain by the stifling of local government councils.

Recall that Ibori had described the apex court ruling as a setback to true federalism, arguing that it contravenes Section 162(3) of the 1999 Constitution.

According to him, “The Federal Government has no right to interfere with the administration of local governments under any guise whatsoever.”

But speaking to newsmen after a stakeholder meeting of Niger Delta elders he convened in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, to discuss the state of the nation, Abalagba accused the former Delta State Governor of playing the devil’s advocate.

He also alleged that he is conspiring with powerful Northern interests to frustrate President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to address Nigeria’s current economic challenges, thereby hindering his possible reelection in 2027.

According to him, “We, the concerned elders from the Niger Delta, have closely observed the recent actions of former Delta State Governor Chief James Onanefe Ibori, a supposed friend to President Tinubu.

“We are troubled that Ibori, a statesman, is being subtly used to undermine President Tinubu’s leadership of our great nation.

“We all witnessed Ibori’s outburst over the landmark and celebrated Supreme Court judgment granting financial autonomy to the 774 local government councils in the country. In his quest to delegitimize the actions of the highest court in the land, he is, by extension, undermining President Tinubu, who instituted the action in the first place.

“For some time now, Chief Ibori has openly fraternized with powerful Northern political interests who are bent on discrediting all the good works of Mr. President and are tirelessly working to stop his reelection bid in 2027.

“Here is a man who didn’t work for President Tinubu to become President, yet, through the President’s benevolence, was given two key positions in the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, even though he remains a critical stakeholder in the opposition, the People’s Democratic Party, PDP and works closely with Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

“As if this is not enough, he has assumed the role of the devil’s advocate.”

Reacting to the allegations, the former governor’s media aide, Tony Eluemunor,  described the alleged fraternity with Northern interests to pull down the Tinubu administration as baseless.

He said the former governor was only addressing the Supreme Court judgement on the point of law, devoid of political sentiment.

Clarifying he said he was however replying as Tony Eluemunor, not Ibori’s media assistant because the allegation does not deserve Ibori’s reaction.

“No where did Ibori address Tinubu. Ibori talked of constitutional issues and the judgement of the Supreme Court. Ibori addressed the Supreme Court over constitutionalism and constitutionality. And mentioned clearly that the states are the federating units. The 774 local governments are not the federating units.”

Assault on true federalism – Ibori reacts to Supreme court ruling on LG autonomy

Former governor of Delta State James Ibori has described the ruling of the Supreme Court on local government autonomy as “assault on true federalism”.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that the apex court on Thursday declared that the state government collection of funds meant for local government areas (LGAs) is unconstitutional. A seven-man panel of the Supreme Court on Thursday delivered the ruling.

Justice Emmanuel Agim, gave this verdict while delivering judgement in the suit marked: SV/CV/343/2024, which was filed by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, against the 36 state governors seeking full autonomy for the 774 local governments in the country.

Reacting, Ibori via his social media page claimed that the Supreme Court misinterpreted the law and has granted the Federal Government even more power.

He further listed the implications of the ruling as constitutional misnterpretation, imbalance of power, erosion of state autonomy, potential use of financial independence for political leverage, and precedent for further federal interventions.

He said, “The Supreme Court has dealt a severe setback on the principle of federalism as defined by section 162(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). The section expressly provides thus: ‘Any amount standing to the credit of the Federation Account shall be distributed among the Federal and State Governments and the Local Government Councils in each State on such terms and in such manner as may be prescribed by the National Assembly’.

“Sections 6 provide further clarity on the subject matter. (6) Each State shall maintain a special account to be called ‘State Joint Local Government Account’ into which shall be paid all allocations to the Local Government Councils of the State from the Federation Account and from the Government of the State.

“The courts ruling on the matter is an assault on true federalism. The federal government has no right to interfere with the administration of Local Governments in under any guise whatsoever. There are only two tiers of government in a federal system of government.

“I’m opposed to fiddling with the allocations to the Joint LG Accounts at the state level but that in itself does not call for this death knell to the clear provisions of section 162 of the constitution.”

“It is my sincere hope that the judgement delivered today will be reviewed at the earliest time possible because it clearly stands the concept of federalism on its head,” Ibori added.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Gbagi, candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the 2023 governorship election in Delta, died on Saturday.

Describing Gbagi as a very courageous politician, Ibori said the life of the former Minister was one of selfless service and sacrifice for the greater good.

In a statement obtained by TNG, Ibori wrote:

“With a heavy heart, I mourn the passing of my dear friend and brother, Olorogun Kenneth Gbagi.

“Olorogun was a very courageous politician and a fierce advocate of good governance.

  • Influence of Ibori, Dariye, other convicts around Tinubu frightening – Dr Sam Amadi

Influence of Ibori, Dariye, other convicts around Tinubu frightening – Dr Sam Amadi

Director of Abuja Social Political Thoughts, Dr Sam Amadi has described as frightening the increasing influence of some convicted former governors within the President Bola Tinubu administration saying that it is a negative influence on moral probity.

Speaking in an interview, he specifically cited former Delta State governor, Chief James Ibori and Chief Joshua Dariye, two former governors in the Tinubu class of former governors who he said should not be allowed around the president.

Noting that the 37th president of the United States, Richard Nixon was turned into a political orphan after he was linked to high crimes, he disclosed how he had to escape a dinner organized to bolster Senator Orji Uzor Kalu’s bid for Senate President essentially because of the stigma.

Dr Amadi a former chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC spoke in an interview on AIT’s Kaakaki programme on Monday.

    He said:

“Many of us get worried when we see persons who have been convicted of crimes. Convicted, not alleged like when somebody like Ibori and others are going to the villa and being seen as strategists and advisers?

“All over the world, when Nixon (President Richard Nixon, 37th president of the United States) failed, he was avoided. Talk of people like Orji Uzor Kalu who was convicted and was released because it was a mistrial and I was invited for a dinner where he was going to run for Senate President, I opted out because I don’t think that with due respect that that his profile should fit into the profile of somebody who should be Senate President.

“He might be a very wonderful person, brilliant guy, smart guy who has done a lot of work with Enyimba as governor, but there are certain conducts, convictions people like Dariye and shouldn’t be the persons who a president who is facing scrutiny by the way, these are not the kind of persons who should surround you and make trips like Mecca or Jerusalem and go to the Villa.

“So, the integrity of institutions requires some moral signaling and so the fear of the people is that if we are going to have this coterie of convicted and arraigned criminals who are either convicted or who are facing serious prosecution by state anti-corruption agencies and they are people who are making daily pilgrimage to the villa, it makes us worried as to what is their mission. Why are they the poster child of the administration?

“Is there something cooking that we don’t know? And this is the kind of thing that moral champions should be worried about. A country transforms not by magic or prayer, a country transforms by deliberate decision to recognize some and derecognize others.

“If persons have been convicted of crime, forgery, corruption against public good, they need to take the back bench. They shouldn’t be the moral champions, they shouldn’t be the persons who are seen daily with the president, whose first job as president is to rebuild public morality.

“You have to put it together that a president assembling convicted criminals, not alleged but by court and building strategic themes around them.

“I think we need to now have clarity on public morality. This country has become a republic of fraud. No rules, people don’t obey rules. Why would these boys who have been convicted become the new champions of a new Nigeria? That is terrible with the picture of Dariye, Ibori, all these guys being the closest to the president, it is frightening. It is frightening to us as it suggests something dangerous. That is really bad.”

  • James Ibori, as Tinubu government’s poster boy – By Musa Usman

James Ibori, as Tinubu government’s poster boy – By Musa Usman

    By Musa Usman

Even as a people and government who have since shunned the niceties of decency, choosing rather to embrace the odium associated with shame, the outrageous perfidy that is the on going romance between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Chief James Onanefe Ibori, a major poster boy of corruption, is a new low in our national hall of shamelessness.

Many are surprised at the sudden resurrection of the Delta state born politician by President Bola Tinubu, in the political life of the nation. This is against the backdrop that, as a government struggling for acceptability, the Tinubu government is definitely sending the wrong message to Nigerians and the international community about the things dear to his administration. Bad enough that Tinubu has the added baggage of a dubious past hanging on his shoulders. Then there are the tribunal cases challenging his declaration as the winner of the February, 2023 presidential elections.

That is why, for a man who rode on the crest of a dubiously conducted election to Aso Rock, most people are not surprised that President Tinubu, in a seeming act of desperation, is cultivating all sorts of characters as a bulwark to garnering legitimacy for his government. This can also be assumed to be a proactive move to position for a possible run-off should the Supreme Court eventually rule that the presidential elections, which ushered in this regime, falls short of the tenets of democracy.

Lets not forget that Tinubu, though not convicted, before now had a lot of corruption allegations against him, especially for the way he managed to hold Lagos State government in a vice economic grip for the past 24 years. As impressions go, the hobnobbing of the President with a character like Ibori and some of the people who have been seen hanging around him in the presidential villa, makes it seem like he is enthroning a government of the corrupt, for the corrupt, by the corrupt.

Chief Ibori is a convicted felon, jailed in far away United Kingdom for the massive heist which he perpetrated on the people and state of Delta during his now infamous reign as governor from 1999 to 2007. Since he completed his jail term in the United Kingdom and his repatriation to Nigeria thereafter, he has otherwise kept a national low, but luxurious, profile, operating in the dark crevices while lording it over the Governor Ifeanyi Okowa government in Delta state. That is, until the political rupture, which pitched the two in a do-or-die struggle, erupted and Ibori was worsted and demystified. Before then, it was assumed that he had Delta state politics and politicians in his pouch.

But the struggle to decide who should fly the flag of the party at the 2023 gubernatorial election saw Humpty Dumpty come crashing from his egoistic olympian wall. Ibori had wanted his lackey, David Edevbie to be positioned, unopposed, as the candidate of the People Democratic Party, PDP, in Delta State. It was a take it or be damned proposition. He arrogated to himself the sole authority to decided who should succeed Governor Okowa. As was to be later made known to the public, attempt to convince him to pick someone else, of his choice, was rejected by him. Whether anyone in Delta State likes it or not, Edevbie must be the next governor Ibori was said to have insisted. That is what led to the schism in the Delta State branch of the Peoples Democratic Party.

Some political gladiators in the state were said to have teamed up with the governor to say a huge “no, can’t do” to the wannabe suzerain. These include his cousin, buddy and mentee, former Governor Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan. They called his bluff, choose a grassroots man, Sheriff Oborevwori, who happened to be the then Speaker of the state House of Assembly as the governorship candidate and the rest, as the common saying goes, is now history.

Disgraced and left without a political base, Ibori has had to go scrounging for relevance. First, he aligned with the garrulous former governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, whose group of five disgruntled PDP governors were at daggers drawn with their party’s presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. Alhaji Abubakar and Chief Ibori were friends until Abubakar against Ibori’s wish nominated Ibori’s new political arch-rival, Ifeanyi Okowa, as Vice Presidential candidate. This was an unbearable and insufferable affront. Sensing an abridgement of his political and economic relevance, Chief Ibori jumped ship clandestinely and started a two pronged approach to sabotage the PDP. He first went to bed with the All Progressives Congress, APC, promising them Delta States votes in the Presidential Elections but he was in romance with the Labour Party. As the election results from Delta shows, Tinubu could not get the mandatory 25 percent votes despite Ibori’s boast.

But as soon as Tinubu was declared winner, Ibori became a constant face in his house, a newbie apostle. He has since wormed his way into the Tinubu government, first to seek political relevance, second to ensure that he is seen as the must-go-to leader in Delta State and the South South; third, to be the one to nominate the minister and political appointees from Delta State; fourth to curry presidential powers to attempt to use underhand moves to wrest Delta State from the Senator Okowa now led party while using the Supreme Court to abridge the freely given votes of the people of Delta State for Governor Sheriff Oborevwori. Forget that he is already a divisive factor in Delta State APC as the party is set to implode. The many factions there are seething with angst and any wrong moves by President Tinubu favouring Ibori will be the catalyst for the total decimation of the party in the state.

Nevertheless, Chief Ibori is one of the most regular faces now in Aso Rock. He has positioned himself as one of Tinubus kitchen cabinet members. He is rumoured to be the brain behind Nuhu Ribadu emerging the National Security Adviser. His palatial homes in Ikoyi and Abuja are the new Mecca of sorts for all kinds of politicians who now assume that his criminal past has been forgiven since he is now paraded as a beacon of political rightness. All these because President Tinubu, with an eye on a possible re-run, has rolled out the red carpet for the jail bed, who has not been pardoned, and should be hiding his face in the hall of infamy.
