ZONING: To be or not to be – By Hope Eghagha

    By Hope O’Rukevbe Eghagha

Every nation, nascent or established, develops a framework for political stability, social engineering, and economic development. While some practices are constitutional, there are also conventional, unwritten codes of mutual coexistence which have evolved over time. Any nation with a sense of history must work out its survival codes, rules, and laws to guarantee its continued existence. Nigeria as currently constituted though skewed in favour of the elite, is somewhat a product of negotiations and discussions especially in the years leading to political independence from Britain. Even the United States did not emerge from heaven, its constituent parts having agreed to be part of the union. It is against this background that we must understand the agitation of most southern Nigerian patriots for power rotation in the country through zoning of positions in the political parties. It is called affirmative action!

In a federation like Nigeria made up of disparate, diverse, and different ethnic and religious groups, the need for equity in power sharing arrangements cannot be overemphasized. The first National Anthem recognized this diversity or plurality in these words: ‘Though tribe and tongue may differ/In brotherhood we stand’ and ‘Help us to build a nation/Where no man is oppressed’. It expressed the wish to create a nation that all peoples would have a sense of belonging within the corporate body. Politicians have always been in the forefront of negotiating the nature and manner of our mutual coexistence even though sometimes their extreme utterances and behaviour tend to emphasize divisive and destructive factors. Yet, they are the ones we must persuade into negotiating a better future for Nigeria.

Strictly speaking Nigeria is not made up of north and south. No region is monolithic. The two blocs are mere referential in describing the country. The north-south divide reflects four levels of consciousness – political, religious, cultural, and economic. Yet this is not completely true. What you have in the north you also have in the south. But there is a dominant narrative couched in a contradictory if false narrative – Islamic north and Christian south. It is true that the north is predominantly Islamic in population, but not every northerner is a Muslim. The same applies to the south. Sadly, politicians have appropriated, misappropriated this paradigm as governance tool for Nigeria. As a result, a President of northern extraction is seen as largely a ‘northern President’. The same applies to a president who comes from the south. The reason is that Presidents tend to pay more attention to their geographical zone in terms of appointments, projects, and social affiliation. This is a tragedy. It is the main reason behind the clamour for power rotation.

The Nigerian presidency is too powerful. Unfortunately, most Presidents have not been national in outlook and character. The ones who attempted to be national were perceived from the other region as ‘the other’, thereby stressing difference. If past and current presidents had all been national in orientation, the clamour for power rotation would not have arisen. The perception by some politicians and ethnic jingoists that the Presidency is indeed their heritage has not helped national cohesion. The ‘they’ and ‘us’ mentality has fostered a deep cleavage that widens by the day. This situation seems to have been aggravated by the skewed appointments into federal agencies by the current federal government.

In a properly run government, the nation ought to search for the best hand from wherever to manage its affairs as president. In such a situation, it would not matter whether the president is from the south or the north. His constituency would be the entire country. Ironically, the military governments in Nigeria appeared to be more conscious of this dynamic than some civilian administrations. It is true that some saw themselves as senior partners in government on account of the region that they come from. Yet the ethnic tension currently wracking the nation is nerve-racking and frightening. Will something give seems to be the question on the lips of everyone. The deadly violence that has gripped the Southeast championed by the prescribed IPOB is a dimension that calls for tactful management of the polity. The animosity between groups had never been so palpable. What has helped the nation thus far is the non-involvement of state actors in the frenzied call for restructuring.

I therefore call on the two major parties to be conscious of power rotation as a way of guaranteeing national harmony. Already, the APC seems to have considered zoning the presidency to the south. The PDP is yet to make its position known. Incumbent President Mohammadu Buhari will complete a two-term presidency in 2023. Owing to the perception that his government has mainly favoured persons from the northern part of the country (including appointments to sensitive federal positions in the security service) and the oil sector, there is clamour that the next President must be a southerner who will redress the years of clannish governance that has permeated the country in the last seven odd years.

In the states there has been a power sharing arrangement to meet the interests of different groups. In Delta State, for example, a gentleman’s agreement was nurtured by then Governor Chief James Ibori on power rotation among the three senatorial districts. After his tenure in 2007 which saw the governorship resting in Delta Central, Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan came from Delta South in 2007, followed by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa from Delta North in 2015. The governorship reverts now to Delta Central for the rotation to return to Point One. To be sure, discussions are ongoing on how to ensure harmony in the State because some forces are contesting the extant arrangement. It is my hope that the PDP leaders would resolve this issue to prevent a snowball into the unknown. Lagos and Anambra States also have working arrangements just as Ogun and Oyo do. This should not elude Nigeria.

If Nigeria must remain one indivisible country, the state actors must promote acts of national unity and cohesion. Zoning power to strategic groups in a polity is a way of strengthening the federation. If President Buhari wants to be remembered for good, the Presidency should be zoned to the South.

Asaba rally: Augoye lauds Okowa, Ibori, Esiso for quality leadership

Chief James Augoye, immediate past Commissioner for Works of Delta State has lauded the State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa for providing quality leadership for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the State.

Chief Augoye lauded Governor Okowa, along with former Governor of the State, Chief James Ibori and the State PDP Chairman, Barr. Kingsley Esiso while speaking briefly with newsmen on the sidelines of the PDP mega rally held on Saturday in Asaba.

The frontline governorship aspirant for the 2023 elections, argued that the turn out of the rally held at the Cenotaph was a testament to the calibre of leaders Governor Okowa, Chief Ibori and Barr Esiso are.

Augoye stressed that Delta State is blessed to have the trio as leaders of the party in the State, while also acknowledging other key leaders of the party in the State.

Augoye said: “No doubt, today’s rally is a testament to the calibre of leaders we have in Delta State PDP. When you look at the arrays of the frontliners of the rally today, you will agree with me that the PDP in Delta is blessed.

“I cannot but thank our amiable Governor, His Excellency, Senator (Dr) Ifeanyi Okowa, former Governor James Ibori and our astute party chairman, Barrister Kingsley Esiso for purposeful leadership for the party in Delta.

“My heart is full of joy that we have leaders like them to reckon with. They don’t work alone. Of course there are other party leaders who join them to provide direction for the party. I thank all of them.

Speaking on the position reached by the PDP leaders at the rally, Augoye welcomed the promise of a free, fair and transparent ground for the PDP primaries.

Earlier, both Governor Okowa and Ibori had promised that all aspirants will have a leveled playing ground to contest the gubernatorial ticket of the party.

2023: Don’t waste your money to contest – Gov Okowa tells opposition aspirants

…you have done well, you remain Delta PDP leader after your tenure – Ibori tells Okowa

Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has advised aspirants in opposition parties in the State not to waste their time and money to contest the 2023 elections.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Governor Okowa gave the advice while speaking at a mega rally organised by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta at the Cenotaph, Asaba, on Saturday.

While affirming that PDP remained one united family in the State, Okowa assured members of the party of free, fair and transparent primary elections ahead of the 2023 general elections.

He assured that leaders of the party in the State would ensure that primaries for all elective positions were free and credible.

He said that the massive mobilisation for the rally showed that PDP was ready to rescue Nigeria from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and advised aspirants in other political parties not to waste their money to contest elections in Delta.

“I give thanks to God for what is happening here today and I thank our leaders in the PDP, our state and local government executives, our youths and women for the massive mobilisation for this rally.

“It is by the grace of God and through their hands that we have mobilised to make a statement today across Nigeria that PDP is prepared to take over this nation.

“One good thing about us in the PDP is that we are one family, we are not like the other people where one man takes it all. Here in PDP, we are one family.

“We work as a family with the love of God but in the other parties, they are always fighting themselves.

“We have been doing a great job as Deltans, but it is because Deltans voted us into power and that is why we have the opportunity to do the great job that we are doing for our state.

“It is because you have always supported us that is why when we win, we win very well. We won well in 2015 and in 2019, and in 2023 we will finish work again.

“We are advising those who want to run in other political parties not to waste their time and money because there is no space for them in Delta,” Okowa said.

Okowa remarked that his administration had done quite a lot since inception, explaining that he had appointed many youths into government and that never in the history of the state had youths been so appointed into various offices in the state.

“Never in the history of this state have youths been so empowered through our various empowerment and entrepreneurship programmes.

“We have done well for our women and we will continue to do more for them, and let me make it clear that even as we play politics, we will continue to do the work that you asked us to do,” he said.

On infrastructure, the Governor assured Deltans that his administration would not slow down in constructing more roads, saying “until I leave office in May, 2023, we will continue to build more and more roads and for those who haven’t been to Asaba in recent times, when you see our new State Secretariat you will be proud that you are a Deltan.

“All our achievements are the collective efforts of all Deltans because you gave us the peace to work and we can’t thank you enough.”

He advised aspirants to control their followers, noting that there was no need for any fight as the party remained one big united family.

“We are one family in PDP; we cannot fight and we will never fight; at the appropriate time, it will be well with us.

“But, one thing I have always promised and I still promise today is that there will always be free and fair primaries; so, there is no room to fight.

“There is no room to quarrel, let us work together as one family that we are and ensure that PDP stays continuously as a family,” he stressed.

In his address, former Governor of the State, Chief James Ibori, lauded Governor Okowa for his style of leadership.

Chief Ibori declared that he would continue to support him to succeed beyond his tenure as governor of the State.

“I cannot be more proud that you are our Governor today. I say that from the bottom of my heart. You have led us and you are leading us very well.

“We are committed to stand by you to finish very strong. At the end of the day, we will all doff our hats for you.

“From what I can see here, you have provided an atmosphere of free and fair contest. From what I can see here, you have provided an atmosphere for people’s aspiration to be heard without fear of intimidation or whatsoever.

“I can recall the day our party was launched at the old parade ground in 1998 when I stood up and I said that democracy is about opening up the environment for everybody and anybody to aspire to be whatever he or she wants to be. And I thank you for carrying on in that manner.

“I want to tell you that I personally don’t believe that your leadership will terminate at the end of your tenure. I don’t believe that. I am bold to say that you have earned your strides and your strides will carry you on”.

Meanwhile, welcoming defectors to the party, Chairman of PDP in the State, Chief Kingsley Esiso said that the rally was primarily organised to welcome decampees from APC and other political parties.

Esiso said that the massive exodus from APC was a testimony that the party has failed Nigerians in all ramifications.

“I can tell you that the primary purpose of this rally is to reduce the opposition party in Delta State by 90 per cent.

“My heart is full of joy and a testimony that APC is a failed political party and the people of Delta have come to realise that APC has only come to bring us economic hardship, poverty, banditry, kidnapping and failed promises.

“It is therefore not a surprise that every reasonable member of the APC is jumping ship to join us.

“Today, we are harvesting many of their leaders from different local government areas and we are celebrating this victory for our great party,” he said.

Other leaders who spoke at the rally included, Deputy Governor, Mr Kingsley Otuaro, Minority Leader, House of Representatives, Chief Ndudi Elumelu, Senator James Manager and former Senate Chief Whip, Senator Stella Omu.

The defectors to the PDP, who were in large number and led by former Chairman of APC in the state, Chief Cyril Ogodo. pledged to work for the PDP to ensure that APC was no more in the state.

  • Delta 2023: Augoye, the choice of Deltans – By Egagifo

Delta 2023: Augoye, the choice of Deltans – By Egagifo

    By Comrade Obaro Egagifo

Over the years, Delta State politics has grown into one of the most interesting in Nigeria, especially as the All Progressives Congress (APC) looks forward to wresting the State from the firm grip of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

This means battle, and the leaders of the PDP in the State know they cannot afford to miscalculate it’s political permutations, if not, the party stands the chance to lose the battle for the heart of Dennis Osadebay House, Asaba to the APC.

With political fortune ever shining bright on the PDP family in Delta as a result of the “gentleman arrangement” of zoning the governorship seat across the three Senatorial Districts of the State, it becomes expedient that the PDP must get its permutations right for 2023.

This is more so as Deltans have come to build their trust in the gentleman arrangement of the PDP in the State that they cannot trust the State in the hands of any other party.

In getting it’s permutations right, the PDP must go into its drawing board devoid of sentiments and look into the array of aspirants before it, and make a good decision on the better person to fly the gubernatorial flag of the party come 2023 in order for the PDP to continue to retain the State.

From the pulse of Deltans, the best choice before the PDP is no other but the gentle and humble Chief James Ojadovba Augoye. Chief Augoye is a man, who many Deltans have come to know very well during his time as two-time Commissioner for Works of Delta State.

The reputation of Augoye across the State rubs off. He has been tested by the Governor Ifeanyi Okowa administration, and Deltans have come to build their trust in him. Those who have come close to the politician can attest to the gentle and humble nature of him.

Having traversed the length and breadth of Delta State as Commissioner for Works, Augoye scored popularity among Deltans along the way. He, therefore, possesses the political wherewithal to win the State for the PDP as a result of his popularity.

This is even more so as Augoye understands the leadership needs of Delta State, and most importantly, the developmental trajectory of the State and the needs of the people, having served as Commissioner for Works, and the only one to serve in that office for two terms since the creation of the State.

Not just hinged on the political configuration of the PDP in Delta State nor his popularity to win the State for the party, the former Commissioner has what it takes to govern Delta State in real terms.

Chief Augoye has a reputable public service record in politics.

Until becoming Commissioner for Works, Augoye, popularly known as the Agadagba Okpe had served in various political and community capacities, gaining the necessary expertise needed for him to serve well as Governor.

Born on May 16th, 1965 in the oil-rich community of Ugbokodo in Okpe local government area of the State, Augoye possesses this driving force to sustain the developmental trajectory of past and present leaders of the State.

Augoye had a rapid and highly improbable rise to political limelight, so much that it is as though the spirits that position men for service are with him in his quest to become the next Governor of Delta State.

Augoye may not be your typical politician. Reason for this is not far-fetched because he possesses a B.Sc. (Hons) in Political Science, and thus understands the fine prints of politics, and not the politics of bad blood we have come to be accustomed with in Nigeria.

In addition to the style of politician he is, Augoye is more of an administrator, and having a Masters degree of Public Administration to his credit, he is an administrator par excellence. Augoye is no doubt the best hand to administer the resources of the State for best results.

Recall that Augoye was appointed member of the Okpe Local Government transition committee, where he served as Chairman of the Internal Revenue Generating Committee in 2003. This no doubt places Augoye in a better position to generate much needed revenue for the running of the State.

A governor should be able to properly manage the resources of his State for the greater good of every citizen of the State. Augoye as governor with his experience, will no doubt, ensure that the revenue generation capacity of Delta State is optimised.

The fact that Augoye is a two term commissioner attests to his aptness in the utilization of resources. It is on record that he justified why he was appointed Commissioner for Works twice. This makes him appropriate for governor. He will deliver, and beat expectations.

More also, Augoye understands Delta State is endowed with human resources, as well as understands very well the numerous natural resources the State is blessed with, and how to harness them for the greater good of Deltans.

All these mean Augoye is the best option to consolidate on the infrastructural strides of Governor Okowa. Deltans are sure that Augoye will ensure continuity of government programmes, while building legacy projects his administration would be remembered for.

Augoye has also served in the capacity of Councilor representing Ward 10 in the Okpe local Government Council Area between 2004 and 2007 and was appointed Okpe Local Government Council Chairman between 2012 and 2014.

The Agadagba Okpe in 2015 served as the coordinator of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Campaign Council for Okpe Local Government Area, a position he used to mobilize support of over 65 towns, communities and villages in Okpe for Governor Okowa’s election in 2015.

Chief Augoye held the same position for Gov. Okowa’s reelection in 2019, making PDP win all elections in Okpe local government area. Augoye delivers.

As a grassroots politician he is, no doubt, Augoye will bring his experience to bear in mobilization of voters to prosecute the Delta State 2023 governorship election for the PDP to win it.

It is, therefore, pertinent that the PDP considers Chief Augoye as it’s guber flag bearer because he is the one who can pull votes massively for the party in the 2023 governorship election to hold in the State.

Augoye is by far the best choice for Deltans in the 2023 governorship election, and the PDP must bank on this.

Fortune tellers have said that since Chief James Onanefe Ibori started the prevailing gentleman arrangement of the PDP in the State, and that another James is about to restart the cycle, Deltans are in for good tidings.

While it is only God who knows who can become the next Governor of Delta State come 2023, one thing that is certain, is that God is with Augoye.

The PDP can rest assured that if Chief Augoye bears the flag of the party in the 2023 governorship election, the APC cannot stand any chance of putting up a fight to take the State.

Your towering figure is ennobling – Macaulay says of Ibori at 63

A former Secretary to the Delta State Government (SSG), Comrade Ovuozourie Macaulay has rejoiced with a former Governor of the State, Chief James Ibori on the occasion of his 63rd birthday anniversary.

In a congratulatory message, Macaulay eulogized the virtues of the former Governor saying that Ibori’s leadership quality has remained impactful in the State.

According to him, the former Governor’s towering figure in the polity has made him a source of inspiration, a rallying point as well as for peace and unity in the State and beyond.

“I celebrate you, my leader. Your towering figure is ennobling, you are a source of inspiration and a continuous rallying point.

“You are a spring of unity and peace in the multi-ethnic Delta,” he stated, adding that Ibori’s knack and commitment to the people was consummate which endeared him to the people.

Macaulay wished the former Governor many more fruitful years ahead and prayed to God Almighty to keep him in divine health as well as grant him the strength to continue to serve his people and humanity in general.

Olu of Warri: Do not rubbish the throne – Ibori appeals to Itsekiri people

Former Governor of Delta State, James Ibori has appealed to the people of Itsekiri not to rubbish the ancient and prestine throne of the Olu of Warri.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Ibori sent out the passionate appeal to the sharply divided Itsekiri people over the succession process to the coronation of the 21st Olu of Warri.

The former Delta State Governor urged the Itsekiri people not to do anything that would further “rubbish and diminish the ancient and pristine Olu of Warri throne.”

Ibori made the call on Friday at his Oghara, Delta State country home when the Ologbotsere of Warri Kingdom, Ayiri Emami honoured the invitation of the former Governor to discuss the way forward on the raging matter.

Ibori, whose mother is Itsekiri from Abiugborodo in the Warri North Local Government Area of Delta State, addressed the Ologbotsere and his entourage in Itsekiri language all through his admonition.

According to the former Delta State Governor, who is popularly known as Odidigborigbo by his admirers, there is no alternative to peace and unity in the matter.

“I plead with all, no matter the divide you belong in this matter to at this point apply the brakes. We should stop doing things that will escalate the already tense situation.

“At moments like this, the best thing to ask, particularly by the elders who know the customs and tradition of the Itsekiri is: how do we normally do it? How do we do it?

“Everybody involved must come to the table to discuss the matter and fashion a way forward in this very delicate and potentially embarrassing matter.

“The Warri throne is highly respected nationally and internationally. We should not do anything to diminish it. We must not cut our nose to spite our face. Warri Kingdom is a pride of monarchy system in Nigeria and beyond. There must be a way around the current situation but certainly not to escalate it.

“I am willing to be part of an unbiased mediatory and reconciliatory body to resolve this matter as soon as possible.

“Despite the stage we are in, it is not too late to remedy the situation and reunite our people who are currently divided on the matter,” Ibori said.

Emami had earlier in his presentation updated the former Governor on the matter and why he decided to go to court after waiting without taking any action for over three months.

The embattled Ologbotsere lamented that all through the period his name was “being rubbished both in the traditional media and social media on a daily basis” simply because he “maintained that due process and due diligence vis-a-vis the extant laws guiding the succession to the Olu of Warri throne must be followed.”

In the entourage of Ayiri were Chief Samuel Omamuli (the Uwaoyiboyami of Warri), and Pa William L. A. Anukun (the Secretary-General of Ologbotsere Descendants worldwide).

Others are Pa Samuel B. O. Okorodudun, Barr. Clement Omotoye and Comrade Alex Eyengho (Spokesperson of Ologbotsere Descendants worldwide), and among others.

REVEALED: Why serving Delta senator knelt before ex-gov James Ibori [Photo]

An associate of Senator representing Delta South, James Manager, has explained why he was seen kneeling before a former Governor, James Ibori, in a picture that has gone viral.

The source, a senior Urhobo chief who spoke with TheNewsGuru.com explained that it is nothing unusual in Urhobo culture for a younger person to kneel before an elder especially when the elder is praying for the younger person. It is mandatory. It has nothing to do with position or power. You can be a multi-billionaire and still kneel before an elder who probably doesn’t know where his next meal will come from.

Other sources have also confirmed that the picture was taken on Wednesday when Manager paid Ibori a courtesy visit.

Senator Manager visited Chief Ibori on Wednesday as part of his consultation to decide on his next political move.

Ibori is senior to and an elder to Senator Manager. He was also his former boss. Manager was Commissioner for Works when Ibori was Governor of Delta state.

It is common knowledge that When you go to pay homage to an Urhobo elder or someone you hold in high esteem, you kneel down when he is praying for you.

It is a sign of respect for people to show who the person is to them.

Another source who spoke with PUNCH has this to say:

“You don’t expect the senator to stand up to address Ibori.

“Senator came to pay homage to him because he had not seen Ibori in a long time and he took drinks.

“Those are the drinks you see on the table in the picture.”

BREAKING: Finally, Nigeria receives £4.2m Ibori loot

The Federal Government of Nigeria has received GBP4,214,017.66 of the loot associated with the family members of former Delta State Governor, James Ibori.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami confirmed the receipt on Tuesday.

This was contained in a statement released by Dr. Umar Jibrilu Gwandu, Special Assistant on Media and Public Relations, Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice.

According to the statement the amount has been credited into the designated Federal Government account with naira equivalent value of the amount as of 10th May, 2021.

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice signed the Memorandum of Understanding for the repatriation of the Ibori loot on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria.

The development, according to Malami, was a demonstration of the recognition of the reputation Nigeria earns through records of management of recovered stolen Nigerian stolen in the execution of public oriented projects.

  • FG accuses Ibori of frustrating efforts to repatriate stolen funds

FG accuses Ibori of frustrating efforts to repatriate stolen funds

The Federal Government has accused former Delta State Governor, Chief James Ibori of acting as a stumbling block against the planned repatriation of about £4.2 million linked to him.

This is contained in a letter addressed to a factional President-General of the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU), Engineer Joseph Omene, who had earlier made a request that the confiscated assets linked to the former governor be used for projects in Delta state against using the funds for projects across the country.

In a letter addressed to Engineer Omene, the Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami urged the UPU to prevail on the former Delta State Governor to withdraw the suit he instituted against the United Kingdom on the confiscation and planned repatriation of the funds.

Malami noted that the suit filed by Chief Ibori against the United Kingdom on the confiscated assets had become a stumbling block for repatriation and that the intervention of the UPU would create an enabling environment for the consideration of the appeal by the union that the alleged looted asset should be used to implement projects in the state.

The AGF letter entitled: “Re-Commendation for Retrieval of Delta’s Stolen Funds and request for Review of Projects to be Executed with the Retrieved Funds”, was signed by Juliet Ibekaku-Nwagwu, the Special Assistant to the President on Justice Reform and International Relations.

The letter read: “I am directed to inform (you) that the HAGF is in receipt of your letter dated 23rd March 2021 with regard to the above subject matter. The HAGF appreciates your concerns and welcomes the interest of UPU in the returned assets.

“The HAGF wishes to inform that he does not have the authority to approve projects for the application of returned assets.

“These decisions are taken at the Federal Executive Council after in-depth deliberations. The HAGF’s mandate is to implement the decisions of the council.

“I am also directed to inform further that the decision of the council is also guided by bilateral negotiations between Nigeria and the country from which the asset will be returned.

“Accordingly, Nigeria and the government of the United Kingdom or any other country for that matter must agree on a specific project in a transparent and accountable manner before a project is approved.

“However, the HAGF has directed that I inform you that the stumbling block in negotiating the return of assets linked to Ibori to Nigeria is the ongoing litigation by Mr James Ibori against the government of United Kingdom in the confiscation hearing in London.

“It is advisable that you approach Mr James Ibori to advise him to withdraw his appeals against the confiscation and repatriation of the assets linked to him, his family, and associates back to Nigeria.

“This is the only way to provide an enabling environment for negotiation of the use of the identified assets for Delta State.”

Ibori’s loot expected soon – Malami

Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami said the Federal Government of Nigeria is working tirelessly to ensure the return of looted Nigerian assets kept outside the country’s territorial boundaries.

To this end, Malami said any moment from now, Nigeria expects the return of £4.2m seized from the associates of convicted former Governor of Delta State, James Ibori.

This is made known by Dr. Umar Jibrilu Gwandu, Special Assistant on Media and Public Relations, Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice and made available to news men in Abuja on Monday the 3rd day of May, 2022.

The statement noted that sometimes when a country transfers funds, it may take a little bit time more than expected due to some documentations.

He said the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice and other relevant government agencies will keep the general public informed once the Ibori loot are received and confirmed.

He said the Federal Government of Nigeria is in touch with the government of the United Kingdom on the matter.

“Documentations with the banks in different countries often take longer than anticipated. We anticipated two weeks but we are not in control of the banks,” the statement said.

He maintained that the Federal Government is working assiduously to make sure that the transfer goes through successfully.

“There is neither complacency nor any delay as efforts are being made to ensure successful transfer of the looted funds,” he said.
