Vardy scores brace as Leicester City crown EPL promotion with Championship title

Leicester City have returned to the Premier League after spending just one season at the championship.

Their return was made possible after Leeds United lost heavily to QPR by 4-0 on Friday night, but they have now crowned their effort with winning the title away at Preston with an emphatic 3-0 victory.

Jamie Vardy was the star for the Foxes as he scored in both halves before Kasey McAteer made sure of the points with an unmarked header.

The Foxes were assured of promotion on Friday without even needing to take to the field. Leeds’ 4-0 loss at QPR ensured Daniel Farke’s team could no longer catch Enzo Maresca’s Leicester, though Ipswich Town’s game in hand meant they still had a shot.

That hope for Ipswich was extinguished at Deepdale, though, with Vardy’s scuffed effort setting Leicester on their way. Vardy got his second of the game early in the second half, slamming home a rebound after Wout Faes fired against the post, and the points were safe before Kasey McAteer’s third.

Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich can join Maresca’s team in the top tier with four points from their final two games against Coventry and Huddersfield. They might not even need that many if Leeds fall short against Southampton on the final day.

  • Why I like watching Jamie Vardy – Haaland

Why I like watching Jamie Vardy – Haaland

Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland says he takes inspiration from Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy.

The 21-year-old is considered one of the best strikers in world football despite his young age.

And Haaland – a target for Manchester City, Manchester United and Real Madrid amongst others – has cited Vardy as one of his idols.

Asked by Sky Sports which players he learns from, Haaland replied: I’ve been watching a lot of players, let’s take for example the run in behind the centre-back when the No 10 has the ball.

“You have maybe the best in the world at that, Jamie Vardy. I’ve been looking a lot at him on exactly this.

“I have always been watching a lot of football and I still do.

“When we play Saturday, I go home on Sunday and watch football all day.”

  • Jamie Vardy set to have hernia operation

Jamie Vardy set to have hernia operation

Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy is set to be sidelined for a “few weeks” because of a hernia operation, according to his club manager Brendan Rodgers on Friday.

The England striker has scored 13 goals in all competitions this season and Rodgers described the operation as a “small corrective procedure.”

“Jamie Vardy will be out for a few weeks,” the Northern Irishman Rodgers said in a Friday video press conference.

“As you know, we’ve been managing him over this last number of months, and he’s been absolutely fantastic.”

Rodgers said Leicester City would have liked the operation to have been done earlier and cannot delay Vardy’s surgery any longer.

“We were hoping to do it a few weeks back,” Rodgers explained.

“This is the window where we can get it done and that will obviously leave him with a good part of the season where he can be really influential for us.

“It’s one that doesn’t keep him (Vardy) out for too long. But it’s just a repair in and round that hernia area. He can’t really put it off much longer.”

Leicester City take on Brentford in the FA Cup on Sunday before English Premier League (EPL) commitments against Everton and Leeds United at the end of January.

Vardy scores as Leicester City run over Leeds United to go second

Jamie Vardy inspired and Youri Tielemans scored twice as Leicester City enjoyed an impressive 4-1 win at Leeds United on Monday to move up to second in the English Premier League (EPL).

The Foxes, who have now won all four away games this season, grabbed the lead in the second minute.

This was when Vardy intercepted a poor back-pass from Leeds United defender Robin Koch and set-up Harvey Barnes to slot home.

The goal came directly after an early chance for Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford, who could only head straight at Kasper Schmeichel from close range.

Brendan Rodgers’ side doubled their lead in the 21st minute when Marc Albrighton whipped in a cross.

Vardy’s stooping, angled header struck Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier in the face and fell to Tielemans to fire home.

Leeds United came out strongly after the break.

They pulled a goal back three minutes after the restart when a deep cross from Stuart Dallas went through a crowded box and into the net’s far corner.

Pablo Hernandez then hit the bar for Leeds United with a fine effort from the edge of the penalty box.

But Leicester City restored their two-goal advantage with a beautifully-worked third goal.

Substitute James Maddison found Cengiz Under who showed great finesse to pick out Vardy who slotted home.

The 33-year-old striker has now scored eight goals in all competitions this season with each coming away from home.

Maddison was involved with the fourth goal, in stoppage time, when Mateusz Klich challenged him from behind.

After a VAR review, referee Andre Marriner awarded a penalty kick which Tielemans confidently converted.

Leicester City are now on 15 points, just one point behind leaders Liverpool and Rodgers enthused about his team.

“I thought my players were brilliant. We had to be tactically disciplined and then play when we had the ball,” he said.

“If we get to March, April and we are in that position (second), then it will be nice, but there is a long way to go,” he added.

Leeds United are 12th on 10 points and their Argentine manager Marcelo Bielsa struck a self-critical tone.

“In the first 30 minutes we defended poorly and after we didn’t create enough danger. That is one of the main responsibilities of the manager,” he said.

“I am not taking the blame, just stating the players were not correctly distributed. The players are disappointed,” added Bielsa.

EPL: Arsenal agreed Vardy deal with Leicester

Former Arsenal chief Dick Law has lifted the lid on Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy’s famous rejection in 2016.

Vardy looked set to leave the King Power to join Arsenal only to change his mind late on, and he still remains at the Foxes today.

Law told the Athletic: “The deal with Leicester was done, the deal with the player was done.

“He came down to visit with his wife Rebekah, he sat on the couch in front of Arsene…and then he backed off.

“On his way back to Leicester I get a call from the player saying he wants to think about it overnight. At that point, you know it’s bad news.”

  • EPL: Vardy scores twice as Leicester thrash Villa

EPL: Vardy scores twice as Leicester thrash Villa

Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers thought his side looked back to their best as Jamie Vardy ended his goal drought in their convincing 4-0 win over Aston Villa.

The Foxes had only picked up two wins in their past eight Premier League games – and two points in their past four matches.

They led through Harvey Barnes’ goal after the winger took advantage of visiting keeper Pepe Reina’s baffling decision to run out of his box.

Vardy’s first touch after coming on was to score a penalty after Tyrone Mings’ handball, before he smashed in at the near post – his first goal in 10 games.

Barnes scored his second from a Marc Albrighton cross.

“It was a very, very good win. An important win,” said Rodgers. “The past few games we haven’t been at our level. In terms of attacking, we were much better this evening. After the first goal we went on and played very well.

“We want to win and early on you could see our confidence wasn’t where it has been. The only way you regain that confidence is hard work and these players have been brilliant. Tonight the intensity was there and we didn’t give away too much.”

Dean Smith’s Villa remain in the relegation zone after a fourth consecutive league defeat, and a fifth in all competitions.

“Individual mistakes are costing us. We need to get better at it. Teams capitalise on our errors,” said Smith.

EPL: Vardy hits brace as Leicester thrash Newcastle

Leicester City’s impressive start to the season under Brendan Rodgers continued with a thumping win which left woeful Newcastle anchored in the relegation zone.

Ricardo Pereira’s outstanding low finish set Leicester on their way before Newcastle were reduced to 10 men shortly before half-time after Isaac Hayden’s terrible challenge on Dennis Praet.

Leicester made the extra man advantage count with three goals in 10 second-half minutes.

Jamie Vardy beat Martin Dubravka at his near post to double the lead and, after Paul Dummett had deflected Praet’s cross into his own net to make it 3-0, headed the fourth.

On a miserable day for Newcastle, Wilfred Ndidi added a late fifth goal with a shot on the turn.

Leicester move back up to third in the table, where they started the weekend, after a fourth win in five league and cup games.

Rodgers’ side are two points off second placed Manchester City and seven behind leaders Liverpool, who they visit next Saturday.

  • EPL: Jamie Vardy brace dent Arsenal’s top-four hopes

EPL: Jamie Vardy brace dent Arsenal’s top-four hopes

Leicester inflicted a blow to Arsenal’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League with a dominant victory at the King Power Stadium.

The unmarked Youri Tielemans headed in a cross from James Maddison just before the hour mark, and Jamie Vardy scored twice late on with a header and a tap-in from close range.

Arsenal played almost an hour of the contest with 10 men after Ainsley Maitland-Niles was sent off.

A third successive Premier League defeat left the Gunners a point behind fourth-placed Chelsea, who face Manchester United at Old Trafford at 16.30 BST on Sunday.

Leicester still have a slim chance of finishing seventh – they are five points behind Wolves – which could earn a Europa League place depending on the outcome of the FA Cup final.

  • EPL: Vardy scores as Leicester shock Chelsea at Stamford Bridge

EPL: Vardy scores as Leicester shock Chelsea at Stamford Bridge

Jamie Vardy strike helped Leicester City defeat Chelsea 1-0 at Stamford Bridge in a Premier League fixture on Saturday.

Vardy’s second-half strike saw Maurizio Sarri’s side defeated at home for the first time this season.

Chelsea were dominant before the break and struck the bar through Eden Hazard, the best of a host of chances, that came following a Harry Maguire error.

But having gone behind it was Chelsea who became sloppy and Leicester only grew in strength.

Indeed, the Foxes might have doubled their lead but for Cesar Azpilicueta’s sliding block to deny Vardy after Kepa Arrizabalaga had spilled a cross, before the keeper saved well from Marc Albrighton.

Chasing a goal of their own, Chelsea could not break down Leicester’s resistance, despite creating two key late chances.

In the 89th minute, Antonio Rudiger nodded just wide from a corner, before Marcos Alonso struck the post with only the keeper to beat.

The Blues had not lost at home since 1 April, against Tottenham, and this defeat leaves them level on points with fifth-placed Arsenal, who beat Burnley 3-1 earlier on Saturday.

Vardy has scored 13 goals in his last 15 Premier League appearances against the ‘big six’ sides.
