Lagos: Tribunal says PDP gov candidate, Jandor’s petition dead on arrival

The Lagos State Election Petition Tribunal on Monday declared as dead on arrival, a petition of the state Governorship Candidate of PDP, Dr Abdulazeez Adediran (a.k.a. Jandor), against Gov. Sanwo-Olu’s election.

The tribunal held that evidence before it showed that the petition lacked merit.

Adediran had contended that Sanwo-Olu was wrongfully nominated and sponsored by his party, the All Progressives Party (APC) and, therefore, was not qualified for the election.

However, Justice Mikail Abdullahi, while reading the tribunal’s decision on the matter, held that the position did not form part of the grounds for disqualification for election into the office of a governor, under Sections 177 and 182 of the Nigerian Constitution (as amended).

The tribunal also declared that it had no powers to inquire into the primary election of the APC which produced Sanwo-Olu, adding that the issue was a pre-election matter which did not fall under its jurisdiction.

“Only an aspirant or member of a political party can complain about the outcome of the party’s primary election, not a busybody like the petitioner,” Abdullahi held.

Abdullahi said: “The second respondent has the highest number of votes, this petition is dead on arrival.

“In view of the evidence adduced before this tribunal, the grounds on which the petitioner is seeking the disqualification of the second and third respondents (Sanwo-Olu and Hamzat) lacks merit.

“Sanwo-Olu and Hamzat are eminently eligible to contest under Section 177 of the Constitution as they are members of a political party and educated up to school certificate level.

“In view of the evidence before  the tribunal, I have found Gov. Sanwo-Olu and his Deputy, Hamzat, duly elected, and I therefore declare them winner of the March 18 governorship poll.”

The tribunal will also deliver judgment in a petition filed by Mr Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the  Labour Party Governorship Candidate for Lagos State.

  • 2023: PDP’s Jandor calls for disqualification of Sanwo-Olu over fake GCE result

2023: PDP’s Jandor calls for disqualification of Sanwo-Olu over fake GCE result

The Peoples Democratic Party, governorship candidate, Abdul-Azeez Adediran (Jandor), have submitted a petition before the Lagos governorship election petitions tribunal seeking the disqualification of Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu over alleged fake GCE result.

The alleged fake exam result was submitted to INEC during his first-term governorship bid.

Mr Adediran and PDP alleged that Mr Sanwo-Olu failed to attach a copy of the GCE O’Level result he claimed to obtain in 1981 along with his form EC9 as required by the Electoral Act 2022, stressing “this development sparked a curiosity, with Adediran and PDP applying for the CTC of Governor Sanwo-Olu 2019 from CF001.”

The petition explained, “It was then discovered that a statement of result issued by Ijebu Ife Community Grammar School, Ijebu-Ife for May/June 1981 GCE O’Level examination with examination number 17624/118, which he submitted for his first term election as governor of the state was not confirmed by WAEC. When JANDOR and PDP approached WAEC for confirmation, they were directed to purchase the scratch card for verification of the WAEC result scratch card, which then confirmed the results as not emanating from WAEC. It came back to be a fake result.”

The party and Mr Adediran want the disqualification of the All Progressives Congress and the Labour Party candidates in the election for non-compliance with the Electoral Act 2022.

In the petition marked EPT/LAG/GOV/01/2023 dated April 7, the petitioners challenged the outcome of the March 18 governorship election on the grounds of substantial non-compliance with the electoral law and the Independent National Electoral Commission guidelines.

While INEC is the first respondent, Mr Sanwo-Olu, Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, APC, Labour’s candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, and the Labour Party respectively, are the second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth respondents.

Besides non-compliance with relevant provisions of the Electoral Act 2022, Mr Adediran and PDP, in their petition, claim that at the time of the governorship election held on March 18, Messrs Sanwo-Olu, Hamzat, and Rhodes-Vivour were not qualified to contest.

The petitioners, therefore, prayed that all votes cast for them in the election be declared wasted.

“The second and third respondents, although not duly sponsored and not qualified, contested along with the first petitioner and others for the office of governor of Lagos state, the subject matter of this petition. Similarly, the fifth and sixth respondents, although not duly sponsored and not qualified, contested, along with the first petitioner and others the office of governor of Lagos state, the subject matter of this petition,” said PDP and its gubernatorial flag bearer.

The petitioners added, “The first respondent, upon the conclusion of the election, declared the second respondent, who was not properly sponsored by the fourth respondent, as the winner of the election to the office of governor of Lagos state. The fifth respondent, who was similarly not properly sponsored by the sixth respondent, was declared by the first respondent as having scored the second highest number of votes at the election to the office of Governor of Lagos State,” the petition explained.

The petitioners also mentioned that the petition bordered on four grounds of non-compliance warranting disqualification of Messrs Sanwo-Olu and Hamzat, declared the winner of the election by INEC.

Mr Adediran and PDP added that the petition also bordered on another four grounds of non-compliance warranting disqualification of Mr Rhodes-Vivour, who was declared to have scored the second-highest number of votes in the election.

The petitioners said APC did not comply with the ‘INEC Time Table and Schedule of Activities for the 2023 General Election’, which stipulated that all political parties must give 21 days’ notice to INEC before the conduct of the primary election.

They added that such notice must emanate from the national office of the political party, signed by its national chairman and national secretary.

“Contrary to this provision, the Lagos state chapter of the APC, through her letter dated 24th May 2022 notified the state resident electoral commissioner of the party primary election held on 26th May 2022, with details of the venue of the said primary. The notification from the state chapter of APC was therefore invalid, null and void according to the Electoral Act 2022,” the petition stated.

The petitioners added that the APC also failed to comply with the requirement of the Electoral Act 2022 that every political party sponsoring a candidate in the general election should submit the nomination form of such candidate(s) not later than 180 days before the conduct of the general election in forms EC9.

The petitioners also cited the omission of the oath page in Form EC9 for the third respondent, (Mr Hamzat), which would have shown that it was not endorsed by the commissioner for oath within the time prescribed by the Electoral Law 2022 and without the oath page, the entire form EC9 and the information therein are worthless.

  • PDP’s Jandor tasks IG-P on spate of attacks during campaigns

PDP’s Jandor tasks IG-P on spate of attacks during campaigns

The PDP Governorship Candidate in Lagos, Dr. Abdul-Azeez Adediran (Jandor), has appealed to the Inspector General of Police, Mr Usman Baba, to take measures to check incessant attacks on his campaign trains.

Adediran, at a news conference on Sunday, also called on President Muhammadu Buhari and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to intervene in the attacks.

Adediran’s campaign train had been attacked by political thugs in Badagry, Ikorodu, Agege, Kosofe and Surulere, leaving some of his followers wounded and vehicles smashed.

It was also reported that the attack on Friday in Surulere was the third attack in succession where suspected hoodlums were said to have fired guns and destroyed some of the campaign vehicles in Adediran’s convoy.

Clearing issues around various attacks, Adediran noted that his change of campaign strategies by going to the people through his ward tours to sell himself to them had exposed him and his followers to huge threats and harassment from political thugs.

“I have constitutional backing to go everywhere to campaign for this election.

“Many of the people attacked are here because these attacks are not about me but the people, hence the account we are giving now.

“At Surulere, the moment I stepped out of the mosque, these boys came and began to shout “where is Jandor?”, and started to shoot everywhere. I quickly entered my car and we drove away.

“The thugs hijacked one of our cars. Before we knew it, all our campaign vehicles were damaged and the party secretariat was also damaged.

“We still want the IGP to take these happenings in Lagos State very seriously. Police should please live up to its constitutional responsibility of protecting our lives and property,” he said.

Adediran, who noted that his team had severally reported all the attacks to the police, said that there were video clips and pictures of the attacks.

He lamented that in most of the places, political thugs were also in the habit of harassing and dispersing people waiting to receive him.

Adediran explained that his running mate, Ms Funke Akindele, was also chased out of the Fruit Market in Kosofe by thugs while some others mounted a road block against his passage in the same council and resorted to hurling stones and bottles at him.

“We will go out there and continue with our campaign. We don’t want anybody to harass us, we don’t want to be intimidated.

“I have been speaking to the people, interacting with artisans, professional and religious groups as well as various associations and stakeholders.

“We were attacked in Badagry, Agege, Kosofe and Surulere in Lagos.

“All these happened in Lagos. Our expectation was that the Chief Security Officer of the state would have addressed the people of Lagos and condemned the attacks in its entirety, but nothing of such happened.

“We believe that they (the ruling party) actually want to use that to scare us away from embarking in the ward-to-ward tour. We will forge ahead,” he said.

Urging no one to twist the story, Adediran said that his followers could not have attacked the people he wanted to sell his manifestoes to, as was being alleged.

According to him, his team will not succumb to any threat from anywhere but will got out and engage the people at the grassroots, telling them what he would do differently if elected.

Adediran said that political actors should not resort to violence but allow the people of the state to select their leaders.

Stressing that the party had written an official petition to the IGP on the attacks, Adediran urged the police to do the needful.

Also speaking, Mrs Aduke Akinde, a PDP leader at Iponri in Surulere, said that party members were preparing and waiting to receive Adediran and his team when masked political thugs drove in and destroyed the rented canopies and chairs on Thursday.

In her comment, Mrs Idowu Adeniyi (Iyalaya), a trader at fruit market in Kosofe, who is a PDP member, said that since the foiled attempt of Akindele to campaign in the market, the market authorities had not allowed them to enter their shops.

“Up till now, no opportunity to enter the market. We plead for help; we are being threatened since Tuesday. Our fruits, apples and bananas must be rotten now,” she said.

In his remarks, Pastor Philips Aivoji, the Lagos State Chairman of PDP, said that there were so many other attacks on PDP members in the state not reported in the media.

Aivoji, who noted that many PDP members in rural places were being threatened, said that election should not be a do-or-die affair.

“These cannot deter us. We will continue to forge ahead because we believe we are on the side of the people. We are not going to be intimidated,” he said.

Reacting to the alleged attacks in a statement on Saturday, Mr Seye Oladejo, the Lagos APC Publicity Secretary, accused Adediran of unleashing terror on innocent residents in the course of his campaign in Surulere.

Oladejo condemned the resort to violence on the citizens of the state in the name of electioneering campaign.

  • Why I won’t scrap Lagos LCDAs – PDP guber candidate, Jandor

Why I won’t scrap Lagos LCDAs – PDP guber candidate, Jandor

The PDP Governorship Candidate for  Lagos State, Dr. Abdul-Azeez Adediran (a.k.a Jandor), says he will retain the 37 inchoate Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs ) in the state if elected governor in 2023.

Adediran told NAN in Lagos that he might even increase the number to further bring the government nearer to Lagos residents.

He said that canceling the LCDAs would not be a good decision.

According to him, the regularisation of the 37 LCDAs are overdue.

“The party (APC) has the presidency, the majority in the National Assembly, and the majority in the state assembly,” he told NAN.

He said that eight years after their creation was enough for the regularisation of the LCDAs created by the administration of Chief Bola Tinubu.

The governorship candidate said that he would do his best to ensure regularisation of the local councils, if elected governor.

“We need them (LCDAs) to bring government closer to the people.

“We don’t have any problem with them (LCDAs). If possible, we will create more,” he said.

Adediran said that he would ensure that the LCDAs would used to bring dividends of democracy to the grassroots.

He said that his administration would not only empower the council to perform their roles but would also monitor them for the people to get dividends of democracy the LCDAs were expected to provide at the grassroots.

2023: Lagos PDP guber candidate promises to review ‘forced evictions’

The Lagos PDP Governorship Candidate, Dr Abdul-Azeez Adediran (Jandor), on Sunday said his administration would review all forced evictions in the state, if elected in 2023 general elections.

Adediran said this at an interactive meeting with various stakeholders, PDP leaders and members in Wards J and K in Eti-Osa Local Government Area during his campaign tour of the council.

Adediran, who was joined in the campaign by the party’s House of Representatives Candidate for Eti-Osa constituency, Mr Bankole Wellington (popularly called Bank W), pledged to prioritise the masses’ interest in policies and programmes.

Adediran promised that his administration would review demolition of landed property across Lagos by previous administrations, if elected.

He alleged that several forced evictions across Lagos did not culminate into development capable of benefiting the people.

“I am going to protect this community as governor. I have said that all the land that have been collected illegally, in the name of personal use in the state, would be collected back and given to owners.

“I would take the land back and give them back to the people when I become governor. It is either we want to continue with them or we want things to change.

“If elected, I would take back those lands. I would build general hospitals and other infrastructure you need.

“Our administration would have the fear of God, and our policies would be people-friendly,” Adediran said.

He urged the people to work to deliver the party’s candidates in the 2023 polls.

“We should deliver our state for PDP. The victory of PDP in this election is for all of us and our collective good. That is why we must put in every effort to make sure our party wins.

“God has seen your suffering and contribution over the years. 2023 is where He wants to compensate you,” the candidate said.

Adediran promised to set up an empowerment scheme for women and youths in the state to fight unemployment and poverty.

He promised to ensure free and compulsory education with free school uniforms.

“All tailors in Lagos state, this will be your government. It is the local tailors that will do it in their constituency; so that we can put money in your pockets.

“We would serve Lagos with fear of God. The only reason why I am in Lagos governorship race is because of people’s welfare,” he said.

Similarly, in another interactive meeting with non-Yoruba speaking indigenes in Ajah, Adediran noted that his administration would serve all residents of the state, irrespective of tribe.

He pledged to end the excesses of members of the various transport unions in the state.

Speaking at Ward K2 in the same local government, Adediran told party leaders and members that his tour of the 245 wards in the state was to feel the pulse and have a foreknowledge of the challenges of various people at the grassroots.

Also, Wellington advised the people to vote massively for PDP candidates.

The PDP’s House of Assembly candidate in the constituency, Mr Akeem Jinadu, said the constituents were overwhelmed by the humility of Adediran, and promised the candidate of their total support at the polls.

Party leaders in the council took turns, complained about lack of basic infrastructure like general hospital, burial ground and others.

Adediran and his running mate, Ms Funke Akindele, who began their ward tour on Oct.19, have met with several stakeholders and toured markets to seek traders’ support on their ambition.

The campaign train has so far visited all wards in Alimosho, Badagry, Ojo, Amuwo-Odofin, Lagos Mainland, Epe and Ibeju Lekki Local Government Areas.

  • 2023: Two Lagos governorship candidates deny endorsing PDP’s Jandor

2023: Two Lagos governorship candidates deny endorsing PDP’s Jandor

The  Governorship Candidates of Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), Mr. Mode Adenipebi, and Action Peoples Party (APP), Mrs. Abiola Adeyemi in Lagos State,  have denied endorsing PDP Candidate, Dr. Abdul-Azeez Adediran (Jandor) for  2023 general elections.

Recalls that the duo were reported to have purpotedly stepped down their ambitions and endorsed Adediran, after a news conference by the Conference of Registered and Deregistered Political Parties (CPP) in Lagos state on Monday, which they belonged to.

The duo, at a news conference held at the Lagos State Secretariat of the Inter Party Advisory Council  (IPAC) said that neither them nor executives of their parties were present at the news conference by the CPP to give such endorsement.

Speaking, Adenipebi said: “My attention has been drawn to the report making the rounds that I have stepped down for  Adediran.

“I have to debunk this. It is not true, it cannot be true and it can never be true. I am fully active in the race.

“I am tightening my mobilisation, consultation and campaign. I am ready to win the governorship election in 2023. My party is ready to form the new government in the state.

“On that basis, I will not step down for the  PDP candidate, I have not stepped down and I will never step down.”

Adenipebi said that he was not a founding member of the CPP but was added to the group based on his political popularity and strength.

He said the purpose of the CPP was for all candidates to come together and reason among themselves so as to support the best candidate in the 2023 governorship election.

“We are supposed to meet to look at the credibility of each candidate and pick the best. I know I am sound and better, hence I keyed in.

“I made it clear that my name and that of my party should not be mentioned there,” he said.

Adenipebi said that he only met Adediran for three minutes on Monday and that the PDP candidate asked if they could have a working agreement.

He said that Adediran promised to get back to them for discussion, saying: “This was all. We have not reached any agreement. This is not true. I will never be part of illegalities.

“We have not met as agreed to know who is more intellectual to lead in the CPP. We have not done that. We never had an agreement.”

Promising to continue his campaign, Adenipebi said that only God and the people would decide the next governor of the state.

Adenipebi said he would rather prefer the PDP candidate stepped down and work for him because of his (Adenipebi) tested character, courage, capacity, and competence to lead the state as a teacher and chattered public manager.

According to him, his party is open to good governance and better life for Lagos residents and Nigerians, hence his readiness to listen to any party which prioritises these.

Also speaking, Adeyemi said it became imperative to debunk the rumour of her purported stepping down to endorse the  PDP candidate because of her supporters and political career.

Adeyemi said that though there were inconclusive discussions at the level of CPP, no agreement had been reached among the candidates.

“We are surprised to read in the media, the purpoted stepping down. We do not want anybody to spoil our reputation politically.

“I want to categorically tell you here that I never stepped down for him (Adediran) or his party or have the intention of stepping down for him or his party, PDP in the nearest future.

Adeyemi said that she had kicked off her campaign.

  • New headache for Sanwo-Olu as 30 political parties affirm Lagos PDP candidate Jandor for governor

New headache for Sanwo-Olu as 30 political parties affirm Lagos PDP candidate Jandor for governor

Ahead of the 2023 general elections, 30 political parties in Lagos state have endorsed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governorship Candidate, Dr. Abdul-Azeez Adediran, (aka Jandor) for governor.

Recall that the leadership of the PDP in Lagos had vowed that the opposition party would take over the state from the ruling APC in next year’s poll.

Announcing this in Lagos, Dr. Akin Badmus- the chairman of the Conference of Registered and Deregistered Political Parties (CPP), said that the endorsement became imperative following the dearth of dividends of democracy in the state and the need to unite with the main opposition party to unseat the ruling APC.

Badmus, also the Lagos state chairman of the Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM), said that the co-political group, spread across the 20 local governments and 37 local council development areas, had resolved to throw their weights behind Adediran and PDP Presidential Candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

In his words: “It is a fact that the cost of living in Lagos is very high with revenue that does not reflect in the development of Lagos State.”

Why we adopted Dr. Abdul-Azeez Adediran (Jandor) of PDP for Lagos State governor-CPP

Badmus explained that the decision for adopting Adediran was based on his determination to rectify and eradicate the hardship being inflicted on Lagos residents.

He alleged that the unchecked excesses of thugs at motor parks in the state had added to the plights and suffering of the residents, which the CPP believed Adediran would curb if supported and elected.

Badmus said that the endorsement was also based on their belief that Adediran would revive dilapidated infrastructure and commence a new one in the state if elected.

“This is the time PDP is taking over, APC is no longer the choice of Lagos residents. So today, the entire 30 political parties comprises both registered and de-registered, and as such, direct all our followers to begin the massive campaign for the PDP in Lagos State,” he asserted.

According to reports, about 5,000 members of the PDP joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos state on Thursday, October 27.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) gathered that the defectors are members and supporters of the PDP governorship candidate in the state (Adediran), popularly known as Jandor’s movement, “Lagos for Lagos”.

The defectors were seen putting on orange T-shirts and fez caps as they stormed the APC office on Acme Road, Ogba, Ikeja, holding brooms, singing and dancing.

The state deputy governor, Obafemi Hamzat, received the defectors and the APC chairman, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi.

  • I will end excesses of touts in Lagos – PDP guber candidate, Jandor

I will end excesses of touts in Lagos – PDP guber candidate, Jandor

The Lagos State PDP Governorship candidate, Dr Abdul-Azeez Adediran (Jandor), said he would end all excesses of transport unions and motor park touts if elected governor in 2023.

Speaking on Sunday evening at the formal presentation of the PDP Governorship Candidate in Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, to indigenes of the state residing in Lagos state, Adediran said he is prepared to give residents of the state a new lease of life.

The event was held at the Nigerian Airforce, Kofo Abayomi Street, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The joint Drivers Welfare Association of Nigeria ((JDWAN)) on Sunday said it would commence its proposed seven-day strike from Monday over alleged extortion and harassment from the motor park management and thugs popularly known as Agbero.

Adediran, who played host at the event, said: “We will provide a new leadership in Lagos State.

“We will check the excesses of motor touts as well as Iyaloja and Babaloja in the state.

“Anyone that closes any market in the state would be sent to prison. I am not going to have any godfather.

“We will ensure that any money collected as revenue in Lagos State is spent for the people of the state as against what is currently obtainable in the state.”

According to him, the time has come to liberate the people of the state.

Adediran said that his administration would provide opportunity for peaceful co-existence between indigenes and non-indigenes in the state.

He said that efforts would be made to ensure that all residents of the state continue to live in peace and harmony under his government.

He said that his administration would appreciate the contributions of non-indegenes to the economy of the state under his government.

Speaking on his counterpart from Akwa Ibom, Adediran expressed belief that Eno would follow the footsteps of the outing Gov. Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom.

According to him, Gov. Emmanuel sees what others do not see, and that he has taken him (Emmanuel) as his father.

While promising to build on the success story of Emmanuel, the PDP candidate told the people that the election would be a referendum on the performances of the outgoing Governor.

“The government of Obong Udom Emmanuel has completed so many projects in Akwa Ibom State such as good roads, street lights, walkways, fountains, dualised roads, and others, and he has made us proud.

“When the standard bearer of the PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, came to flag off his campaign in Akwa Ibom, he said that Nigeria wants to be Akwa Ibom.

“The Governor is building the fourth longest bridge in Nigeria. He has opened Akwa Ibom by air, land, and see.

“With these, it is time to go back home, Udom is working. We will send you logistics to come home to vote, while those here should vote for the PDP,” he said.

Eno said that Akwa Ibom was fast developing, adding that “the election is not a popularity contest, but that it is about a need and impactful assessment.”

The cleric-turned politician said that Emmanuel brought peace to the state, hence the need to continue the trajectory of development.

“We have ‘Arise Agenda’. We want to ensure that we all have dividends of democracy and take it to the grassroots.

“We will have proper farm settlement with hostels and facilities. We will have people work in those farms. We will build on security and we will block waterways and provide adequate security, fund education.

“I will create 5,000 non-governmental jobs. I will start small and grow fast. There are many other things we would do employment,” he said.

Also speaking, Elder Samuel Bassey, who represented Gov. Emmanuel, said that since Lagos state had decided to support Eno, nobody could stop him.

Bassey said that the candidate would continue the projects of outgoing Gov. Udom Emmanuel.
