  • Jay-Z’s Roc Nation sues licensing company over ‘massive fraud’

Roc Nation, Jay-z’s record label, has filed a lawsuit against Iconix Brand Group, a city licensing company, on claim of defrauding investors.
According to a new lawsuit sighted by Page Six, the firm enticed Roc Nation alongside other companies into doing business with it by lying about its finances.
The litigation, filed at the Manhattan supreme court, also purported that Iconix was able to “amass a portfolio of trademarks under false pretenses” to actualize its “massive years-long fraud.”
Following this, Iconix then “absconded with its licensees’ money without providing the branding and retail support it promised.”
“Plaintiffs never would have entangled their business interests with Iconix had it disclosed the true condition of its business or the massive accounting fraud in which it was engaged,” the court documents read in part.
Other firms affected in the alleged scandal include including Ecko, Ed Hardy, and PONY.
Although the licensing company is yet to make any official statement with regards to the claims, Roc Nation has charged Iconix to pay the legal cost incurred and compensate it for other unspecified damages.
Jay Z had repeatedly evaded the Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) requests to testify against Iconix but was forced to do so after Paul Gardephe, Manhattan federal judge, ordered the hip-hop mogul to appear in court.
“This has been delayed for five months, and I do not intend to tolerate further delay,” Gardephe said at the hearing.
“There is ample basis for the SEC to investigate the company’s accounting treatment of brand assets, including Rocawear.”

  • JAY-Z becomes 1st hip-hop billionaire–Forbes

Music Mogul, Jay–Z is now, according to a new Forbes magazine, making him the first rapper to amass a fortune in the ten-figure range.

“It’s clear that Jay-Z has accumulated a fortune that conservatively totals $1 billion, making him one of only a handful of entertainers to become a billionaire—and the first hip-hop artist to do so,” the magazine said.

Forbes breakdown indicated that the rapper’s chief source of wealth is his $300-a-bottle Armand de Brignac champagne brand (at $310 million), but also boasts investments at well over $200 million (including a large stake in Uber).

Forbes says the reason Jay-Z’s wealth went all up on the table is his new business interest in alcohol.

His streaming service Tidal allegedly supplies about $100 million of his net worth, just behind his cognac D’Ussé.

Jay-Z, recently gave a special performance to celebrate the re-opening of the celebrated NYC venue Webster Hall.

He and wife Beyoncé were are recipients of the Vanguard Prize at the GLAAD Awards in March.

  • Jay Z hires lawyer to handle 21 Savage’s deportation case

21 Savage has been getting massive support from industry colleagues since he got arrested.

TMZ reports that Jay Z thinks 21 Savage’s arrest and detention is “an absolute travesty” and should be released so he can reunite with his kids.

To help speed up his release, the music mogul hired lawyer, Alex Spiro to assist with his case.
“We are not going to stop until he is released, bonded out or in front of a judge … What we have here is someone who overstayed their Visa with an application pending for 4 years – not a convicted criminal that needs to be detained and removed but, by all accounts a wonderful person, father, and entertainer who has a marijuana offense which was vacated and sealed,” Spiro tells TMZ.
According to reports,21 Savage actually had a US Visa permit pending for 4 years before he reapplied for one in 2017, which as we reported may have led to a background check that discovered his visa was expired and triggered his arrest.
According to TMZ, his lawyer, Dina LaPolt says they are working round the clock to get him out of detention.
“We are working diligently to get Mr. Abraham-Joseph out of detention while we work with authorities to clear up any misunderstanding. Mr. Abraham-Joseph is a role model to the young people in the country — especially in Atlanta, Georgia and is actively working in the community leading programs to help underprivileged youths in financial literacy,” she said.
  • Forbes crowns Jay-Z richest musician in America

Jay-Z has been declared the richest musician in America, according to an update of Forbes’s annual ranking of celebrity wealth.

Appearing behind George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey and Michael Jordan, with a net worth of $900m, the hip-hop mogul saw the biggest dollar gains out of anyone else on the list, Yahoo News reports, quoting The Independent.

Thanks to his stakes in various companies, including entertainment giant Roc Nation, his streaming service Tidal, and alcohol companies including Armand de Brignac and D’Ussé, he has overtaken rapper Diddy, who previously held the title.

Star Wars creator George Lucas, who sold Lucasfilm to Disney in 2012, has helped improve his own wealth by transitioning the original film trilogy into an empire of merchandise, tie-in games, novels and comic books. Lucas’s fortune is estimated to be roughly $5.4 billion, over a billion dollars more valuable than Spielberg, the closest to him in terms of wealth, so it may be some time before someone surpasses him.

Rolling Stone reports that Jay may struggle to hold onto his crown as the richest musician, as Dr Dre reportedly had an estimated net worth of $770m earlier this year. That figure is likely to have climbed after his exit from Apple earlier this year.

    1. George Lucas (net worth $5.4 billion)
    2. Steven Spielberg ($3.7 billion)
    3. Oprah Winfrey ($2.8 billion)

  • My organs shifted- Beyonce opens up on birth of her twins

Renowned songstress, Beyonce Knowles has finally opened on the birth of her twins, Sir and Rumi.

The Lemonade singer revealed that her health and her babies were in danger, hence she had to go through an emergency procedure.

In an interview with Vogue, she said she was in survival mode and “did not grasp it all until months later”.

In her words: “After the birth of my first child, I believed in the things society said about how my body should look. I put pressure on myself to lose all the baby weight in three months, and scheduled a small tour to assure I would do it.

“Looking back, that was crazy. I was still breastfeeding when I performed the Revel shows in Atlantic City in 2012. After the twins, I approached things very differently.

“I was 218 pounds the day I gave birth to Rumi and Sir. I was swollen from toxemia and had been on bed rest for over a month. My health and my babies’ health were in danger, so I had an emergency C-section. We spent many weeks in the NICU. My husband was a soldier and such a strong support system for me.

“I am proud to have been a witness to his strength and evolution as a man, a best friend, and a father. I was in survival mode and did not grasp it all until months later. Today I have a connection to any parent who has been through such an experience.

“After the C-section, my core felt different. It had been major surgery. Some of your organs are shifted temporarily, and in rare cases, removed temporarily during delivery. I am not sure everyone understands that. I needed time to heal, to recover.”

Beyonce also added that she has become much curvier since she gave birth to her twins.

She said: “During my recovery, I gave myself self-love and self-care, and I embraced being curvier. I accepted what my body wanted to be. After six months, I started preparing for Coachella. I became vegan temporarily, gave up coffee, alcohol, and all fruit drinks. But I was patient with myself and enjoyed my fuller curves. My kids and husband did, too.

“I think it’s important for women and men to see and appreciate the beauty in their natural bodies.”

Jay-Z raps about the moment in the song Smile, on his latest album 4:44.

“Mama had four kids, but she’s a lesbian/Had to pretend so long that she’s a thespian. Had to hide in the closet, so she medicate/Society shame and the pain was too much to take.”

  • Jay Z’s mother confesses: ‘I am a lesbian’

Mother to American megastar, Jay-Z, has revealed that she is a secluded lesbian, even though she had four children.

In Jay-Z’s recent album, 4:44 in the track “Smile,” Gloria Carter is quoted to have talked about her scuffle with being a closeted lesbian.

On it, her son raps: “Mama had four kids, but she’s a lesbian/Had to pretend so long that she’s a thespian.”

At the end of the song, Gloria Carter reads a poem she wrote about her experience, “Living in the Shadows,” Yahoo Celebrity reports.

Now, in a new interview on Friday, Jay-Z’s mum clarifies the origin of the track and how she came out to her son who is married to one of America’s celebrated stars, Beyonce.

Gloria Carter says, “I just finally started telling him who I was. Besides your mother, this is the person that I am. This is the life that I live.

“So, my son started actually tearing up. ’Cause he’s like, ‘That had to be a horrible life.’ I was like, ‘My life was never horrible. It was just different.’ So, that made him want to do a song about it.”

But when she heard a first cut of “Smile,” Gloria was uncertain about the song and the massive audience she’d be opening up to.

“I was like, ehhh … I ain’t really feeling that … I was sharing myself with (my son), not with the world.”

Eventually, after she recited her poem for Jay, the track came together. Gloria says she was “tired of all the mystery … I don’t have to worry about anybody wondering if I’m in the life or not — I’m gonna tell them.”

And when “Smile” came out, Gloria was overwhelmed by the positive reaction from fans.

She said, “I got so many people calling me saying, ‘Thank you because you’re me.’ I didn’t realize the impact of what I was going to do.”
