BREAKING: FG lifts ban on airline that flew Naira Marley to Abuja

The Federal Government has lifted the ban placed on a private airline, Executive Jet Services, which flew musician, Azeez Fashola aka Naira Marley, to Abuja to attend a concert mid-June.

The airline had acted in contravention of the restriction on interstate movement and closure of airports in existence at the time.

The airline had been suspended but giving an update on Monday during a Presidential Task Force briefing in Abuja, the Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, said the ban has been lifted.

On Monday, June 15, 2020, Sirika suspended Executive Jets for lying about its operations and for violating the ban that has shut Nigeria’s airspace since March, in a bid to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Marley’s concert in Abuja on Saturday, June 13, sparked outrage on social media platforms for its violation of social and physical distancing protocols.

It was also staged at a time when interstate travel by land and air is still prohibited by federal and state governments.

  • Fashola tackles ExecuJet for linking him to Naira Marley’s flight

Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola, has lambasted private aircraft charter operator, Executive Jet Services, for linking him to the flight which took singer, Azeez Fashola aka Naira Marley, to Abuja over the weekend.

The singer, alongside ex-Big Brother Naija housemate, Kim Oprah, and eight others boarded the company’s flight in violation of travel ban which resulted in the suspension of the firm’s licence by the Federal Government on Monday.

After the federal government suspended the airline, the Chairman/CEO of the company, Sam Iwuajoku, wrote in a letter dated June 15 and addressed to the Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, to apologise for the violation, saying he thought the flight was booked for the minister.

However, Fashola, in a statement on Tuesday by his spokesman, Hakeem Bello, said it was ‘ridiculous’ to link him to the flight.

The statement read: “For purposes of clarity and in order to set the records straight, the Hon. Minister of Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola SAN, has not travelled out of Abuja since March 22, 2020, when he returned there after an inspection tour of the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway construction work and a visit to Lagos, before the lockdown.

“The decision of the Hon. Minister not to travel was taken in strict compliance with the Federal Government’s ban on inter-state travels as part of efforts to control the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It is therefore ridiculous for Dr Iwuajoku to attempt to link the Hon. Minister with any noncompliant flight.”

Davido speaks on ‘$62m’ family private jet

Nigerian pop star, Davido has opened up about the acquired private jet by Adedeji Adeleke, his father, on social media.

The self-proclaimed ‘Omo Baba Olowo (OBO)’ is known for attracting criticisms on social media platforms due to his proclivity for flaunting his family’s wealth.

Such criticisms, however, increased recently after he shared photos and a video of his dad’s latest acquisition — a Bombardier Global Express 6000, which is said to be valued at $62 million — on his social media page.

“Congrats Daddy on your (our) new baby,” he wrote on Twitter.

The show off appeared not to have gone too well with quite a number of Nigerians who were quick to express their reservations on social media platforms.

But reacting to such condemnations, in a chat with BBC, Davido explained that such aspect of his lifestyle was to inspire others not to oppress anyone.

“We’re not here to rub it (wealth) in anybody’s face, we’re here to show motivation, to inspire others” he said.

“Many kids write to me and tell me that I’m the reason they want to finish school and projects and become successful.”

He also added that by doing that, he is trying to correct age-long impression by the western world that people in Africa live a substandard life.

“In America, there are people who think we live in huts, sometimes I feel like I want to show them…We’re living the fire, we’re going crazy, you feel me?” he said.

“It has nothing to do with showing off or trying to oppress anybody. They oppress us enough.”

  • US seizes jet of Nigerian billionaire indicted in multi-million dollar fraud

The US federal authorities have seized an aircraft belonging to a Nigerian facing multi-million dollar fraud charges in the country.

A report published WSB-TV, detailed how the seizure was made on Tuesday at the Peachtree DeKalb Airport in Georgia.

Federal agents were said to have ransacked the aircraft for evidence, while another team searched for drugs and other contraband.

The authorities, however, did not mention the name of the Nigerian whose aircraft was seized.

“For the most part, people don’t even understand. They don’t know what’s happening in Atlanta, Georgia,” one of the special agents said.

“This is all day, every day. I mean, this is the fruits of our labor, and this is the successes of a great team effort by our state, local and federal partners coming together to hit the bad guys where it hurts, in their pocket.

“When we see a certain type of aircraft get sold, it raises our suspicions.”

Recall that in November, US authorities indicted Allen Onyema, chief executive officer of Air Peace, for allegedly moving more than $20 million from Nigeria through US bank accounts in a scheme involving false documents based on the purchase of aircraft.

Onyema was said to have started travelling frequently to Atlanta, where he opened several personal and business bank accounts. Between 2010 and 2018, over $44.9 million was allegedly transferred into his Atlanta-based accounts from foreign sources.

Onyema was indicted alongside Ejiroghene Eghagha, the airline’s chief of administration and finance, who is said to have committed aggravated identity theft in connection with the scheme.

A US district court of the northern district of Georgia was also reported to have issued a warrant to arrest Onyema and authorised US marshals service to bring him into custody.

The billionaire businessman has denied any wrongdoing, expressing the willingness to clear his name.

  • Panic as jet with 168 passengers skids off runway in Turkey

Panic broke out on a passenger jet when it skidded off the runway at a Turkish airport and plunged down the side of a cliff overlooking the sea.

The Pegasus Airlines Boeing 737-800 with 168 passengers and crew had flown from Ankara and landed at Trabzon on the Black Sea coast late on Saturday.

Everyone on board was evacuated safely, provincial governor Yucel Yavuz said. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the accident is being investigated, officials said.

State-run Anadolu news agency said there was panic on board as the plane went out of control.

Pictures show the jet lying nose down on a muddy slope just metres from the water’s edge.

“We tilted to the side. The front was down while the plane’s rear was up. There was panic, people shouting, screaming,” passenger Fatma Gordu was quoted as saying.

Mr Yavuz said the airport was closed for several hours while investigations took place.

In a statement Pegasus Airlines said the plane “had a runway excursion incident” as it landed at Trabzon.
