    JUST IN: Nigerian lawmaker, Yuguda Kila is dead

    A member representing Gwaram Federal Constituency of Jigawa State, Yuguda Hassan Kila has died at the age of 70.

    Mr Kila, who was chairman of the House Committee on Customs, died on Thursday afternoon at the National Hospital, Abuja after a brief illness.

    A retired customs comptroller, the late politician began his basic education at Kila Primary School and subsequently Igbo Union Grammar School in Kano.

    He also attended the prestigious Barewa College in Zaria and later attended the College of the Palm Beaches in West Palm Beach, Florida, USA.

    In 2015, he was elected member of the House of Representatives on the platform of the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC, to represent Gwaram Constituency.

    He was re-elected for the same position in the 2019 general elections.

    PDP expels former Jigawa governorship candidate

    The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has expelled its former Jigawa governorship candidate, Malam Aminu Ibrahim, for anti-party activities.

    Alhaji Ibrahim Babandi, the state PDP Chairman, said this when he spoke with newsmen in Dutse on Wednesday.

    Babandi said Ibrahim was expelled after failing to appear and defend himself before a committee set up to investigate the allegation against him.

    “Members of the press, we invited you to inform you of the decision of the Executive Committee of PDP concerning the letter we received from Ibrahim’s ward in Ringim.

    “At about three weeks ago, we received a letter from Ringim that our former governorship candidate, Malam Aminu Ibrahim Ringim has been suspended due to anti party activities and sabotage being perpetrated by him.

    “They decided to suspend him for a month and sent us a letter as the State Executive Committee of the party, which we looked into carefully.

    “After looking at the letter, we looked into the party’s constitution which provided that we should set up a committee to investigate the matter, which we did,” he said.

    Babandi added: “The committee decided to invite both the ward executive committee and the person under investigation.

    “After the invitation, the committee, under the chairmanship of Alhaji Muhammad Daguro, confirmed in its report that Ibrahim was found to have committed the acts.”

    He said the committee invited him twice to appear and defend himself before the committee, but he failed to do so.

    “We wrote a letter to him but he decided not appear before the committee on two consecutive times, and we were advised to take the next action, which was to expel him from the party, a par recommendation of the committee, which we endorsed,” he said.

    According to him, the executive committee of the party has urged him to stop parading him as member of the party henceforth.

    When contacted, Ibrahim said the State Executive Committee lacked the power to expel him from the party.

    He said that the executives were illegally constituted hence they lacked the power to invite or take action against any member of the party.

    Sharia agency destroys 588 bottles of beer in Jigawa

    Hisbah, the Sharia law enforcement agency in Jigawa, said it had destroyed no fewer than 588 confiscated bottles of beer in Ringim Local Government Area of the state.

    Malam Ibrahim Dahiru, the State Commandant of Hisbah made this known in Dutse on Sunday that the beer was destroyed on Aug. 20.

    Dahiru said that the beer was confiscated in Tudun Babaye village, Ringim LGA, during a raid in Gujungu, Kijawal and Wadugur villages in Ringim and Taura Local Government Areas.

    He emphasized that consumption of beer was prohibited in all parts of the state, including villages.

    The commandant assured that the Hisbah would not relent in its fight against immoral acts, including consumption of alcohol in the state.

    Dahiru further advised residents to desist from engaging in vices capable of destroying the society.

    Alleged Rape: Police arrest 11 suspects in Jigawa

    The Police Command in Jigawa has arrested 11 suspects for allegedly raping a 12-year-old girl (name withheld).

    The spokesman of the command, SP Abdu Jinjiri confirmed the arrest on Sunday in Dutse.

    Jinjiri said the suspects (names withheld) were arrested on May 30, in Dutse Local Government Area of the state.

    He explained that the suspects were apprehended after the police received a complaint that one of the suspects, aged 57 of Ma’ai village was seen at Limawa market in Dutse LGA, trying to lure the victim.

    “A case of rape is being investigated at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Dutse, sequel to a report received by the Police that a 57-year-old man of Ma’ai village, Dutse LGA was seen at Limawa market trying to lure a 12-year-old girl of the same address, to a seclusion so as to have sexual intercourse with her,” he told NAN.

    Jinjiri added that in the course of interrogation, the victim listed names of 11 men who had sexual intercourse with her at different times on many occasions.

    “And to this end, the police arrested the listed suspects,” Jinjiri said, adding that the suspects would be charged to court as soon as investigations were completed.

    Verbal autopsy concludes 47 controversial deaths in Jigawa not related to COVID-19

    Alhaji Abdullahi Maikanti, the Chairman, Hadejia Local Government Council in Jigawa, on Wednesday said that the 47 deaths recorded in the area had no link with Coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

    The deaths were said to have occurred between April 30 and May 6, and Maikanti said only three people died within the period, contrary to media reports which claimed that 100 persons died of mysterious ailments in 10 days.

    However, the council chairman said that after a second audit on Tuesday, it was confirmed that 47 people died in the area.

    Maikanti told NAN in Hadejia that the deceased were elderly people with pre-existing conditions.

    “After we conducted verbal autopsy and visited Gawuna and General Hospital burial grounds, we concluded that 47 people died from April 30 to May 6.

    “The deceased were aged between 70 and 100 years, and had been battling with illnesses like hypertension, asthma, and stroke among others for many years.

    “In all our investigation, the deceased did not show symptoms of COVID-19,” he said.

    On prevention against the pandemic, the chairman said that the council recently intercepted three buses that conveyed traders to a “wet market” in the area.

    “Most of the traders came all the way from Bayelsa and Benue to buy frogs in the market.

    “Our fear is that these people may carry the virus and infect our people in the market.

    “But we later released the vehicles after their owners showed remorse and wrote an undertaking that they would steer clear of Hadejia and its markets for now,” Maikanti said.

    He said the council had intensified sensitisation of residents on social distancing, coughing and sneezing etiquette as well as the need for frequent hand washing.

    The state government had earlier constituted a five-man committee to investigate the spate of deaths in the area and make recommendations.

    The committee, chaired by Dr. Mahmud Abdulwahab, a seasoned medical practitioner is expected to submit its findings on May 7.

    Jigawa confirms 2 additional cases of COVID- 19, locks down 3 affected areas

    The Jigawa Government has confirmed two additional cases of the coronavirus (COVID-19) in the state.

    Gov. Muhammad Badaru told newsmen in Dutse that the cases were confirmed after tests were conducted on suspected persons.

    According to Badaru, the two infected persons are from Birninkudu and Gumel Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state.

    He added that the two affected LGAs, including Gujungu town in Taura LGA, which the suspects had visited, would be locked down for seven days from 12 midnight of April 30.

    “Birninkudu, Gumel, and Gujungu will be on total lockdown for one week starting from April 30, by 12 midnight after two cases were confirmed from those areas,” he said.

    Recall that the governor had on April 20 announced the first index case of the COVID-19 in Kazaure LGA.

    Kazaure was then locked down for seven days in order to prevent the further spread of the virus.

    The governor pledged that the state government would take additional measures to stop the virus from spreading further in the state.

    The Jigawa Government said it would improve its plants nursery centres to enhance production of quality tree seedlings.

    Alhaji Baba Chai-Chai, the state Commissioner for Environment, gave the assurance in a statement by the ministry’s spokesman, Malam Zubairu Sulaiman, in Dutse on Sunday.

    Suleiman quoted Chai-Chai as saying that the gesture is to combat desert encroachment and erosion in the state.

    He said the commissioner gave the assurance when he visited Birninkudu and Andaza forests tree seedlings and nursery centres, in Birninkudu and Kiyawa Local Government Areas of the state, on Friday.

    “The state ministry of environment will improve all the government gardens and tree seedling centres to enhance production of millions of assorted tree seedlings.

    “The seedlings will be planted by the government annually, while others will be distributed freely to the members of the public to plant in their respective communities.

    “The gesture is part of the state government’s effort to combat desertification and erosion across the state,” the commissioner said.

    Chai-Chai also assured that arrangements have been concluded for planting of million of assorted tree seedlings in towns and villages in the state.

    He added that others would be planted along both state and federal roads across the state.

    According to Suleiman, the commissioner also warned the public against indiscriminate felling of trees in both forests and game reserves across the state.

    “The commissioner therefore warned that any person found cutting down tree illegally will be punished legally,” he said.

    He also quoted in their separate remarks, the Director Forestry in the ministry, Alhaji Alasan Shuaibu and Zonal Officers in charge of Birninkudu and Dutse, Alhaji Haruna Ibrahim Alhaji Musa Wada, as calling for the recruitment of more workers, especially forest guards, gardeners and watchmen.

    The Senate, on April 2, suspended Omo-Agege (Delta-APC) over a “dissenting comment’’ on decision of the Upper Chamber on adoption of conference report on INEC Commission Act (2010) Amendment Bill.

    Omo-Agege, however, went to court to challenge his suspension and the court, in its ruling, declared the action unconstitutional, saying that the Senate could not suspend a member beyond 14 days.

    President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday said his administration would not disappoint Nigerians, saying everything possible was being done to ameliorate the hardship in Nigeria.

    Buhari stated this during an All Progressives Congress(APC) rally in Dutse as part of activities of his two-day working visit to Jigawa.

    He said that he was aware of the hardship faced by people as a result of the economic crunch and hike in prices of essential commodities.

    The President said that the Federal Government has stopped the importation of rice to encourage the local
    encourage local production and empower farmers.

    He thanked the government and people of Jigawa for their warm reception and support to the administration.

    In his remarks, Gov. Muhammad Badaru of Jigawa State reminded the people that President Buhari had been doing his best , adding that the economy of the country was in a mess when he (Buhari) took over.

    Badaru said as part of his contribution, the state government would continue to embark on projects that would impact positively on the lives of the people.

    “Recently, we introduced social security allowances of between N50,000 to N100,000 in all political wards
    to cater for immediate problems of people before approaching the government for intervention,” he said.

    He said these problems included minor repairs of boreholes and medication, among others.

    The governor said that the present administration would continue to remain focused in line with the policies and
    programmes of the Federal government.

    The Director of Strategic Communications and Official Spokesperson of the President Muhammadu Buhari Campaign Organization, Festus Keyamo, has set into motion nationwide campaign for President Muhammadu Buhari.

    TheNewsGuru reports Keyamo, who was appointed by the Buhari’s campaign organization to ensure the incumbent president clinched the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential ticket to come back for second term, began his official duties today visiting Jigawa state.

    The Buhari’s campaign organization spokesman was in Dutse on Thursday as part of his duties as Director, Strategic Communications of President Buhari 2019 campaign to solicit for support in the dissemination of the right narratives to various localities nationwide.

    “The 2019 election is not just a contest for power. If it were to be so, some of us would not come out of our comfort zone to take on this task.

    “It is a battle between forces of corruption and patriots; between the ‘tin gods’ of Nigeria and the masses; between the forces of darkness and light,” Keyamo said in Dutse.

    The spokesman, who was welcomed by the State Governor Badaru Abubakar and other party faithful at the Jigawa State Government House, had said Buhari will win the 2019 general election easily.

    He said the 2019 election will be easier for the President to win than even when he was elected in 2015.

    “The 2019 election will be the easiest election for president Buhari despite what the naysayers are saying, it will be easier for the president than 2015 and all the indices are there, because since that time the president had won over the heart of other sections of the country at that time that may not have voted for him, between then and now he has won their heart” he said.

    He pointed out that this was because the President already has many achievements he can boast of. Look at the second Niger bridge it is 40% complete and has been expanded from a 2km to a 7km bridge, look at the railway tracks they have increased them from single gage to standard gauge railway tracks the one between Lagos and Ibadan and Kano and Abuja is 80% complete.

    Nigerians will see that despite all the negative talks here and there, that it will be the easiest election for the president more than that of 2015,” said the lawyer.

    Drug abuse: Police raid criminals’ hideouts in Jigawa

    The Police in Jigawa have embarked on raiding of hard drug dealers and other criminals’ hideouts to check criminal behaviours and drug abuse in the state.

    Superintendent of Police, Abdu Jinjiri, the Police Spokesman in the state, who made the disclosure in Dutse on Sunday, said the action was in compliance with the directive of the state’s Commissioner of Police, Mr Bala Zama.

    He said Zama had ordered officers and men of the command to constantly come down on drug peddlers, drug abusers and other criminals in the state.

    ‘‘The CP Jigawa state, Mr Bala Zama, directed the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the command to continually raid all black spots and criminal hideouts within and outside the state capital, with a view to making the state hot for criminals.

    ‘‘And among the targeted criminals are hard drugs dealers. So it is just to improve security in the state,’’ Jinjiri said.

    The spokesman, who declared that the command would not condone criminality tendencies, warned that criminals and other evil doers who failed to repent would face the wrath of the law.

    According to him, the command would not spare undesirable elements that refuse to change for better and live a peaceful life in the state.

    Jinjiri, therefore, advised the general public to report to law enforcement agencies people with suspicious characters for prompt action.
