    Why opposition shunned Jigawa LG election – SSG

    Secretary to the Jigawa State Government (SSG), Alhaji Bala Ibrahim, has claimed that opposition political parties shunned the Saturday’s local government polls to escape humiliating defeat.

    Ibrahim said this while fielding questions from newsmen after casting his votes in Birninkudu town, Birninkudu Local Government Area.

    He spoke against the backdrop of the boycott of the exercise by the opposition parties.

    He further disagreed with the reason in some quarters that the opposition boycotted the elections due to the high cost of the nomination forms fixed by the Jigawa State Independent Electoral Commission (JISIEC).

    He said, “It is because of the overwhelming support APC enjoys in the state that intimidated them and they feel that they are going to waste their resources.”

    He said that the All Progressive Congress (APC) had been winning elections at all levels in the state since 20215.

    “APC is overwhelmingly strong in the state and is becoming stronger, more indomitable and indispensable by the day.

    “So, appreciate our opponents for refusing to participate in the election because they know they are going to fail,” he said.

    The SSG said that the party fielded credible candidates for both chairmanship and councillorship positions in the 27 LGAs.

    According to him, the party is poised to produce council chairmen with integrity, who will serve the people well.

    “The APC candidates are expected to work hand-in-hand  with Gov. Umar Namadi in order to serve people at the grassroots,” he said l

    He described the election as peaceful and gave assurance that the new leadership would provide dividend of democracy to the people at the grassroots.

    “Our expectation at the end of the election is to have credible leadership at the grassroots.

    “Our governor has been acknowledged as a very innovative governor as far as governance, social and economic development are concerned.

    “So, our elected chairmen will work hand-in-hand with him to develop the state,” he said.

    A correspondent, who monitored the exercise at Lambun fairah (442), View centre (004) and Guruzawa (047), reports that the election was generally peaceful.

    APC fielded candidates 27 Chairmanship and Councillorship candidates, PDP fielded two Chairmanship cndidates for Gwaram and Kafinhausa and Councillorship for Kudai in Dutse and Dubantu in Hadejia LGAs.

    The NNPP fielded Chairmanship candidate for Ringim Local Government only.

    Heartbroken woman sets self ablaze after divorce

    A 40-year-old woman (name withheld) has set herself on fire after her husband divorced her in Guri Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

    DSP Lawan Shiisu, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the State confirmed the incident in a statement in Dutse on Friday.

    Shiisu said the woman, who resides in Garin Mallam village allegedly used petrol to set herself on fire.

    “On Thursday at about 0740hrs, the command, received a heartbreaking and pitful incident from Guri LGA that a woman, aged 40 of Garin Mallam village, poured petrol on her body, set herself ablaze and got burnt beyond recognition  on the outskirt of the village.

    “Following this report, a squad of officers from the Guri Divisional Police Headquarters raced to the scene  abd verified the incident. The officers took the charred body to the hospital and later released the corpse to the family for burial,” Shiisu said.

    He explained that preliminary investigation revealed that the deceased experienced depression few months following her divorce by her husband.

    The PPRO added that the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Ahmadu Abdullahi, advised people to always submit their affairs to Almighty Allah for a way out.

    Abdullahi also advised people to always seek advice and counselling from their elders on complex issues in order to avoid such unfortunate incidents.

    Tinubu condoles with Jigawa over fatal flood

    President Bola Tinubu has condoled with the Jigawa Government and the people of the state over the recent flooding that led to the loss of lives and displacement of many citizens.

    In a statement on Wednesday by his spokesman, Chief Ajuri Ngelale, the president also commiserated with the bereaved families and victims of the flooding, which impacted 14 local government areas and many households.

    “President Tinubu states that recurring environmental disasters underscore the urgency of sustaining measures to address climate change and its perils as well as remove man-made elements to the challenge.

    “The President prays for the repose of the souls of the deceased and assures the people of Jigawa of his administration’s support at this difficult time,” Ngelale said.

    20 dead, many displaced as flood wreaks havoc in Jigawa, Bauchi

    The Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has confirmed 16 persons killed and 3,936 houses destroyed to flood disaster.

    It said the flood also submerged 2,744 hectres of farmlands following torrential rainfalls since the commencement of the 2024 rainy season.

    The Executive Secretary of the agency, Dr Haruna Mariga, who stated this in Dutse on Wednesday, said the disaster affected 10 local government areas of the state.

    Mairiga said the deaths were as result of building collapse, drowning and canoe mishaps.

    “The disaster resulted in 16 deaths with 3,936 persons displaced while 2,744 hectares of farmlands submerged,” he said, adding that the situation might escalate due to anticipated high volume of rainfall.

    Mairiga said the agency had provided temporary shelter and distributed relief materials to the displaced persons to mitigate their sufferings.

    He listed the items to include rice, maize, maize grits, blankets, pasta, and mats.

    SEMA confirms 4 killed in Bauchi flood

    Similarly, the Bauchi State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has confirmed four persons dead in recent flood disaster in the state.

    The flood also destroyed houses, submerged farmlands and washed away some sections of the Kano-Maiduguri expressway.

    Mr Masud Aliyu, the Director-General of the agency, said this in an interview on Wednesday in Bauchi.

    He said the flood affected Shira, Giade and Katagum Local Government Areas of the state, following torrential rains in the past days.

    “The flood left thousands homeless, submerged farmlands and cut-off roads, The affected roads Include Giade-Isawa, and Kano-Maiduguri expressway,” he said.

    Aliyu said the state government had mobilised contractors to repair the failed sections of the roads, to provide an alternative route for road users.

    He, therefore, urged the people to heed to the warnings by the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET) about impeding flood disaster.

    The collapsed section of the Kano-Maiduguri expressway had disrupted movement of goods and services in the area.

    The road links Kano, Jigawa, Bauchi, Borno and Yobe in  North-East.

    Police arrest more protesters in Jigawa

    The Police Command in Jigawa said it has arrested 82 additional suspects of looting and vandalising public property during the nationwide protests in the state.

    The command’s spokesman, DSP Lawan Shiisu, said in a statement on Tuesday in Dutse that the suspects were arrested on Saturday and Monday.

    This brings the total number of suspects so far arrested and detained to 294 from Aug.1 in the state.

    The command also listed items recovered from 212 suspects to include 303 bags of fertilizer, 50 motorcycles, three tricycles, 12 bicycles, nine chairs, 54 cartons of mosquito net, two bags of rice and office furniture.

    Shiisu said 37 of the 212 suspects were detained on Saturday for alleged involvement in vandalism and destruction of property.

    He explained that the commands had recovered 249 bags of fertilizer, 100 cartons of mosquito nets, 11 motorcycles and four air conditioners.

    Other items recovered also included four televisions, three desktop computers, 34 sachets of agro-chemicals, rice, water pump, solar panels and 10 office chairs.

    “ These items were recovered during the command’s Saturday operations in Kazaure, Babura and Gagarawa Local Government Areas,’’ he said.

    The spokesperson further said that some suspects were alleged to have forcefully entered the guest and farm house of one Sen. Babangida Hussaini and carted away valuables items.

    According to him, 45 of the suspects were arrested on Monday in Babura, Gwiwa, Roni and Birnin Kudu LGAs.

    He, however, said 30 bags of guinea corn, 94 bags of fertilizer, 335 bales of mosquito nets, two motorcycles, four bags of hibiscus flower, 12 refrigerators and 12 computers were recovered in the Monday operation.

    Other items recovered on the same day were: Three printers, six ceiling fans, eight solar panels, 66 office chairs, two wheel barrows and 2 carpets

    “No fewer thsn 195 of the suspects have so been charged to Court,’’ Shiisu said, adding that the state was no peaceful, with no report of any violence.

    Jigawa announces date for LG election

    The Jigawa State Independent Electoral Commission (JISIEC), has fixed Oct. 5, for local government elections in the state.

    The Chairman of the commission, Alhaji Awwal Muhammad, stated this at a stakeholders’ meeting, in Dutse on Friday.

    Muhammad assured the commission’s readiness to conduct free, fair and credible election in the the 27 local government areas of the state.

    He recalled that the commission, had earlier announced the postponement of the council election, from June, 2024, to June, 2025, following the amendment of the state electoral law.

    “However, it’s my belief that you are aware of the recent Supreme Court judgement directing all state governments, to put in place, democratically elected local government councils in their respective states, with immediate effect.

    “In compliance with the recent Supreme Court judgement, the JISIEC, being law authority, deemed it necessary to revert to its earlier decision on LG election, and unanimously requested for re-amendament of the state electoral law, to conform with the Supreme Court Judgement, and consequently fixed Saturday, October 5, 2024 as new date, for the conduct of LG election in Jigawa state,” he said.

    He, therefore, urged security agencies, traditional and religious leaders, political parties, organisations, women groups, youths leaders, media and community groups, to support the commission, in achieving the desired goal.

    Muhammad, who reiterated the commitment of the commission to credible election, commended stakeholders for their support to the commission, in its effort to conduct free, fair and credible council elections in the state.

    Jigawa residents warned against impending flooding

    The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has urged residents in Jigawa to be vigilant and heed to safety measures to mitigate flooding.

    The NOA Director in the state, Malam Ahmad Ibrahim, stated this in a statement by its spokesperson Sara Ogodo, on Monday in Dutse.

    It said the call was imperative sequel to the National Flood Early Warning Systems (FEWS), which indicated that the state is likely to experience heavy downpour in the coming weeks.

    Ibrahim was quoted as saying that human activities caused climate change, including perennial flood that led to displacement, loss of lives and properties across the country.

    “The FEWS Centre of the Federal Ministry of Environment’s report on flood prediction, indicates that heavy rainfall may lead to flood in Miga, Ringim, Hadejia and Dutse.

    “There is also a report of potential failure of the Tiga Dam in Kano, as a result of which excessive rainfalls might affect a lot of communities and towns in Jigawa state.

    “People must therefore stay informed, especially on the need to be proactive, as this is the only way we can mitigate the impacts of this imminent disaster in our communities,” Ibrahim said in the statement.

    Ibrahim reiterated commitment to public awareness to mobilise communities on how to mitigate the disaster.

    Namadi approves appointment of 8 permanent secretaries

    Gov. Umar Namadi of Jigawa has approved the appointment of eight permanent secretaries to fill existing vacancies in the state.

    Information about the approval is contained in a statement issued by the state’s Head of Service, Alhaji Muhammad Dagaceri, on Friday in Dutse.

    He stated that the appointment is purely on merit, competence, personal integrity and seniority.

    Dagaceri added that those appointed were substantive directors elevated to the position of permanent secretaries.

    He listed those appointed as Abdullahi Sa’idu, Yusha’u Muhammad-Jaji, Lawan Muhammad-Haruna, Labaran Adamu, Dahiru Lawan, Sagir Muhammad-Sani,  Ahmed Isah and Muhammad Yahaya-Jabo.

    The head of service added that all appointments take immediate effect.

    The National Bureau of Statistics in its report, said that Premium Motor Spirit (Petrol) Price Watch for May 2024 rose by 223.21 per cent to approximately ₦770 per litre.

    The report stated that on a month-on-month basis, an increase of 9.75 per cent was recorded from ₦701.24 per litre in April 2024.

    According to the report, Jigawa State topped the price chart at ₦937.50 per litre, followed by Ondo and Benue States with N882.67 per litre and ₦882.22 per litre, respectively.

    However, Lagos, Niger, and Kwara states emerged with the lowest average retail prices for the product at ₦636.80, ₦642.16 and N645.15, respectively, according to the NBS report.

    On the zonal profile, the North West Zone had the highest average retail price of ₦845.26, while the North Central Zone had the lowest price of ₦695.04.

    Meanwhile, the average retail price of Automotive Gas Oil (Diesel) paid by consumers increased by 66.29 per cent to ₦1403.96 per litre in May 2024 from ₦844.28 per litre recorded in May 2023.

    On a month-on-month, MoM basis, a decrease of 0.78 per cent was recorded from ₦1415.06 per litre in April 2024.

    The report stated, “ Looking at the variations in the state prices, the top three states with the highest average price of the product in May 2024 include Adamawa State (₦1709.00), Sokoto State (₦1675.00) and Bauchi (₦1657.92). Furthermore, the top three lowest prices were recorded in the following State, namely, Niger State (₦1140.20), Kano State (₦1153.33), and Oyo State (₦1236.92).

    The zonal representation of the average price of diesel showed that North-East Zone has the highest price of ₦1605.91 while South West Zone has the lowest price of ₦1303.60 when compared with other zones.

    This comes as the average retail price per litre of Household Kerosene (HHK) paid by consumers in May 2024 was ₦1,450.35, indicating an increase of 0.74 per cent when compared to ₦1,439.64 recorded in April 2024.

    NPFL: Center referee, Haruna Abdullahi suspended for poor officiating

    Haruna Abdullahi a Nigerian center referee has been suspended  from further officiating in the Nigeria League by the Nigeria Football Federation Refereeing Development Unit for gross misconduct.

    Abdullahi was in charge of the matchday 34 fixture involving Doma United and Lobi Stars at the Pantami Stadium, Gombe on Saturday but his performance was tagged as poor on the evening.

    The Jigawa born referee was adjudged to have made some questionable calls.

    Doma United won the game 1-0, with the winning goal from an offside.

    The move was necessitated after a petition by Lobi Stars to the NPFL.

    The decision to drop the official has been communicated to the Jigawa Football Federation.
