Insecurity: Jigawa restricts movement of motorcycles in 27 LGAs

The Jigawa State Government has restricted the movement of motorcycles from 9:00 pm to 6:00 am in all the 27 Local Government Areas over the rising insecurity in the state.

The state Chairman, Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), Bala Chamo, disclosed this on Wednesday during an interview with journalists in Dutse.

Chamo, who is also the chairman of Dutse Local Government Council, said that the measure was taken after the state’s Security Council observed the increasing number of security threats and decided to take steps to curtail them.

“Most of the attacks we recorded in the state are being carried out using the motorcycles by the attackers,” he said.

“The abductors who recently kidnapped one traditional title holder in Taura, a renowned businessman in Zango in Miga local government and several other places in recent times in the state were found using bikes.

“The ban has become imperative to checkmate the activities of criminals terrorizing some parts of the state.

“Considering the present security issue, there is a need to gear up security measures from the state down to our local level as we are recording several security concerns”.

Chamo also noted that commercial motorcycle riders in the state were duly informed through their leadership, warning that anybody found violating the new order would face the wrath of the law as all security agencies were directed to ensure total compliance in all the nooks and crannies of the state.

According to him, the new order which would take effect from September 9 across the 27 local government areas would involve both private and commercial motorcycles.

  • Court of Appeal Justice Demands Punishment for Jigawa, Imo High Court Judges for Dabbling into Anambra Gubernatorial Matter

Court of Appeal Justice Demands Punishment for Jigawa, Imo High Court Judges for Dabbling into Anambra Gubernatorial Matter

Justice Chioma Nwosu-Iheme of the Court of Appeal has demanded punishment for the judge of the Jigawa State High Court, Justice Ubale of Birnin Kudu, and his counterpart in the Imo State judiciary, Justice B. C. Iheka, for what she described as their unprofessional conduct by dabbling into the Anambra State gubernatorial election controversy and for giving consequential judgments on it.

The Court of Appeal justice also wants lawyers who took the cases to the state high courts in Jigawa and Imo states disciplined for professional misbehavior.

Justice Nwosu-Iheme made the demand while ruling today on a motion by Chike Onyemenam (SAN), counsel to Jude Okeke, who claims to be the national chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), to stop the execution of the order made earlier on July 18 by Justice Charles C. Okaa of the Anambra State High Court in Awka directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize the former Central Bank of Nigeria governor, Professor Charles Soludo, as the APGA candidate in the November 6 gubernatorial election in the state, in line with the outcome of the June 23 APGA Congress and primary election which Soludo won by almost 94% and monitored by INEC.

INEC had on July 16 published The Honorable Chukwuma Umeoji of the House of Representatives as the APGA candidate following an order by the Jigawa State High Court on June 28, but was not made known until the eve of the INEC’s unveiling of names of various candidates.

The consequential order was based on the argument that Okeke was the APGA acting national chairman who purportedly took over from one Edozie Njoku.

INEC, which regulates Nigerian political parties, has no record of either Njoku or Okeke as having ever been the APGA national chairman, as it has in the last few years recognized only Chief Victor Oye as the party’s chairman.

Still, Justice Iheka, presiding over the Imo State High Court in Owerri, on July 30 gave a judgment affirming Okeke as the APGA chairman and Umeoji the party’s gubernatorial candidate.

The Court of Appeal justice accused Anambra politicians of going round the country shopping for judgments to enable them to contest in the November governorship election rather than appear before the courts which have the territorial jurisdiction to entertain the election.

She regretted that some judges and lawyers indulge such politicians and as a result bring the legal profession into public contempt.

Justice Nwosu-Iheme, therefore, called for strong punishments to be meted out to the state high court judges in Jigawa and Imo states who gave judgments on the Anambra APGA controversy and the lawyers who brought the cases before them.

30 killed by Cholera outbreak; 2,000 hospitalised in Jigawa

A cholera outbreak in Jigawa has killed at least 30 people with more than 2,000 hospitalized in the past two months in the state.

Dr Salisu Mu’azu, Permanent Secretary, Jigawa State Ministry of Health, confirmed the development.

He said that most of the infected cases were children recorded in nine local government areas of the state.

Mu’azu listed Hadejia; Dutse, Kirikasamma, Birnin Kudu and Ringim as some of the areas worst hit by the outbreak.

He said that of the 2,000 infected cases, some had been discharged while others were still receiving free medical treatment in government hospitals.

The permanent secretary, who could not immediately say what was the cause of the outbreak, insisted that the Hadejia case could be linked to water pollution.

He alleged that there was a possibility of water contamination from an area where people practiced open defecation near the water vendors who collect and circulate the water to residents of Hadejia town.

Mu’azu said the state government was on top of the situation for now and has been providing necessary assistance to the residents in the affected areas.

The permanent secretary said the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) had supplied some medications and promised to send more soonest.
