Children of Avwiorovwe – Francis Ewherido

    By Francis Ewherido

Avwiorovwe is what the Urhobos call the least favoured wife in a polygamous marriage. The favourite wife is amebo. The amebocould take over the husband’s bedroom two out of three months, while the other four wives shared the remaining one month. Children of amebo could get away with murder, while children of avwiorovwe could be banished from the family house for minor infractions like stealing a piece of meat. And the mother (avwiorovwe) could be vicariously liable for the infractions of her children.

Consequently, a sensible avwiorovwe and her children treaded with caution. As much as possible they stayed out of trouble. The children also worked very hard in school (and in other endeavours) to get good grades because failure could truncate their education.

Why this preamble? I have been interacting with some youngsters recently. They are understandably frustrated with the Nigerian system. They feel that the few available jobs are being taken up by children of the privileged, using man-know-man tactics. Favouritism is real in Nigeria, it is part of our life. No need running away from the truth. Favouritism will continue to work against people who are not connected as long as the system, to which we are all contributors, remains. But does that mean there is no hope for people who are not connected? Not at all, there is hope for everyone.

Once the recruitment people start processing applications, all such poorly-written application letters are the first to be trashed. Who do you blame for that, the system or yourself?

The first lesson youngsters from humble backgrounds must learn is that greatness comes mainly from within not outside and 80 per cent of what will make you great is already in you; only 20 per cent is out there. So, instead of lamenting day in day out, roll up your sleeve and get down to work. Start something legitimate. If you need to drive a cab, till the soil or join workers at a building site or factory for a START, do just that. Your starting point is inconsequential, your destination is what counts. But wait a minute, do you even have a clear destination in mind in this your life journey? If you don’t, that is the first and real problem you should deal with, not worrying about government or external forces.

Like children of avwiorovwe, youngsters, who are not from privileged background must come to terms with their circumstances, go the extra mile at all times and work very hard. Survival of the fittest is very rampant in our society. So, they must strive to be among the fittest so that they can grab every opportunity that comes their way. But that is not what I am seeing in many cases. They blame the system for their unemployment, but take no blame for their situation. Let me cite some instances.

A job opening comes up and applications pour in. If you read some of their application letters, they are like Abakaliki rice of old. There are stones, sorry errors, everywhere.

Once the recruitment people start processing applications, all such poorly-written application letters are the first to be trashed. Who do you blame for that, the system or yourself?

Next, recruitment people move to curriculum vitae (CV). Some applicants do not include their age in their CVs for jobs where there are age specifications. What do you think the recruitment people will do? They will trash any CV that carries no age of the applicant. It means all such applicants are out. Under referees in their CVs, many youngsters write: “Referees available on request.” For real? You want a recruitment officer to write to you to beg you to supply the names of your referees? Not a chance; they will simply trash your CV. Again, instead of some applicants to attach their CVs to the email they are sending, they paste it on it. So you want the recruitment officer to copy your CV, paste and arrange it for you? They will treat you like you sent no CV and move on. If you see the CVs of some applicants, you want to throw up. They are poorly arranged and very unattractive. Every applicant, especially those who are not from privileged backgrounds, should enhance their chances of getting an advertised job by having very good CVs. If you do not know how to go about it, get help, there are people who can help you knock out a great looking CV. You can also go online and learn how to prepare and present CVs.

Next, you should prepare for interviews harder than the way you prepared for exams while in school. Thoroughly research the position you are applying for. If you know someone who currently occupies such a position, go to him for tutorials. If you know the company you are applying to, go to their website and study everything, including their corporate culture. Google the name and read as much literature as possible about the company. The extra knowledge will make you more confident. Just like your exams in school, you do not just wake up, wash your face and go for an interview, expecting to outperform people who have been preparing.

On the day of the interview, be well groomed. Dress smartly and corporately, if it is a corporate organisation. Borrow clothes if you have to do so. People before you did. Some people fail interviews because of their appearance. How can you dress casually for a corporate interview? An applicant even went for an interview in a corporate organisation, wearing a shade of yellow trousers! That is sacrilege. Many applicants inevitably take public transport for to interviews. Leave home early. This will enable you get there before time even if you are delayed; do not risk going for an interview late. Also it gives you time to freshen up if you were ruffled in the bus.

Every job seeker needs to update himself continuously. If you graduated three to five years ago and you have not been updating yourself, you have become unemployable. If a bodybuilder does not exercise for three years, he will go flabby. That is how the brain is. How then do you expect to get a job?

When you do these, you give yourself a fighting chance. Man-know-man certainly exists, it was there even before I was born, but merit still reigns in many organisations, especially the multinational companies. There are organisations where at least 95 per cent of new entrants are employed on merit. These should be hunting grounds for people from disadvantaged backgrounds. A friend told me how the daughter got a job in an organisation where neither he nor the daughter knew anyone. She was part of 360 applicants who applied for six vacant positions. She got one of the six spots after a series of tests and interviews. Though not from a disadvantaged background, she got the job totally on merit. Work your socks off like children of avwiorovwe. Be extra determined. Pull down doors that refuse to open and run into walls you cannot jump over. Some of the movers and shakers of Nigeria that you see today came from lowlier backgrounds than yours. But they did just that (pulled down doors and ran into walls 20, 30 and 40 years ago). Today they are enjoying the fruit of their perseverance. It is difficult to see someone, driven by purpose, who stayed focussed, who did not ultimately succeed

Quit this self-pity and defeatist disposition. Your parents scrapped to send you to school so that you can graduate and uplift your family. That should remain your mission and your focus. Stop giving excuses and live like someone on a mission. Nigeria is a tough place, but when the going gets tough, the tough gets going. The tough ones are making their little progress in all sectors of the economy. Nigeria does not baby sit or spoon feed anyone, especially if you are from a humble background. Like children of a sensible avwiorovwe, be tough people, stop living as if your father has an empire waiting for you to inherit. And just in case, if you mistook this for a motivational material, it is not; I am just reminding you of the harsh realities of your world.

  • 42% of jobs lost to COVID-19 – World Bank chief

42% of jobs lost to COVID-19 – World Bank chief

ALMOST half of those employed have lost their jobs due to Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the World Bank has said.

The bank put the percentage of individuals who were working before March, but now out of employment at 42.

Its Senior Financial Sector Specialist, Ahmed Rostom, shared the information in a data during a Development Bank of Nigeria (DBN) virtual conference on risk sharing.

The panellists agreed that credit risk guarantee will provide a safety net for Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to access credit post COVID-19.

Speaking on the impact of the pandemic on the local economy, Rostom stated: “42% of individuals who were working before March 2020, especially those working in hospitality and service industry are no longer working.”

He described the situation as disturbing.

The panellists agreed that MSME’s are the largest employers of labour as they account for about 84 per cent of jobs in the country.

“They are important industrialisation agents, and a driving force in the attainment of industrial growth because of their value chain diversification and expansion of industrial production. They contribute nearly half of the country’s GDP at 48 per cent yet less than 5 per cent of MSME’s have access to finance,” they said.

On her part, the Managing Director of JNC International and a Director at DBN Mrs. Claire Omatseye stressed the importance of risk sharing among all stakeholders.

According to her, “for MSMEs, risk sharing helps eliminate financial oppression and predatory lending, while also ensuring prosperity is shared equitably. For the government, risk sharing contributes to the realisation of its economic objectives and stabilisation policies”

Mrs. Omatseye noted that credit guarantees (CGs) will enhances access and improves the quality of Credit to close a gap in the existing market.

For MSMEs, she explained that credit guarantees “can play a catalytic role to your businesses, reduces 100%-150% collateral cover for loans (in addition using the Movable asset register).”

With CGs into traditional financing, Mrs. Omatseye said: “It will provide the necessary comfort to financial institutions with the assurance that some portion of the risk is shared (partial risk guaranty).

This is a viable alternative solution to help creditworthy firms navigate their liquidity challenges brought on by the pandemic induced economic contraction and stabilize their cash flows.

“Credit Guaranty provides third party credit-risk mitigation to lenders with the aim of increasing access to credit. In the case of a default by the MSME, the lender’s losses on the loans made to MSME are partially absorbed.”

This reduction in any potential loss that the Credit Guarantee Scheme (CGS) offers, she said, “will incentivise more lenders to provide special purpose financing.

This will in turn change the existing viscous cycle where we see many SME’s dying before their first birthdays or declaring bankruptcy during COVID-19.”

  • APC condemns exclusion of members in committee for FG’s job

APC condemns exclusion of members in committee for FG’s job

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State has raised concern over the composition of a committee set up to recruit 10,00 youths by Federal Government in each local government in the state.

Some APC chieftains, in a petition, addressed to the Minister of Labour, Dr Chris Ngige, and made available to newsmen on Sunday in Enugu, said that the state government had hijacked the process.

A copy of the petition, which was sent to the National Assembly, was signed by Chief Ben Ezeamuna and Chief Tobi Odinwankpa from Udi and Ezeagu Local Government areas of the state, respectively.

They alleged that the leadership and membership of the committee for Enugu State were mostly loyalists and members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), while members of APC were excluded.

The petition read in part: “As the ruling party in Nigeria, we were perplexed to see that members of our party are conspicuously missing.

“The list contains only PDP loyalists and members apart from few inclusions outside party lines.

“It is a worrisome development as our party is marginalised and this is an embarrassing development that has plagued APC development in the state,” it read.

The party said that such type of neglect of party members had dwarfed the progress of the party in the state.

The APC chieftains sought for the intervention and directive of the minister to review the membership of the committee and for a member of their party to be at the head.

Meanwhile, the state Commissioner for Labour, Mr Uchechukwu Ogbonna, said he was not aware of the identity of members of the recruitment committee.

Ogbonna said that no memo was sent to him from any quarter, adding that he would seek information about the scheme from the relevant quarters.

The Federal Government had initiated a scheme to gainfully engage 10, 000 youths in each local government area in the country. The Federal Government also announced that a selection committee would be put in place to drive the recruitment.

  • Ngige to Nigerian workers: Your jobs are safe despite COVID-19 pandemic

The Federal Government says it will work to ensure that there are no job losses arising from the extreme effects of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on the economy.

The Minister of Labour, Dr Chris Ngige, said this on Thursday in his May Day message released by his media aide, Mr Emmanuel Nzomiwu.

Ngige said that the Federal Government would look at the four-pillar plan of policy responses to the pandemic laid out by the International Labour Organisation (ILO).

He said that such policies were intended to be human-centred and built on global solidarity.

He said that all relevant factors to the nation’s workforce would be identified, analysed and solidified to ensure job retention and continued realisation of decent work agenda.

The minister said that the Federal Government would be guided by labour standards as benchmarks for social and employment protection at this time of vulnerabilities.

He stated that the government would not encourage employers to disengage any member of their staff without the prerequisite social dialogue and clearance from the ministry.

Ngige commended workers in the health sector for being in the frontline of ensuring that the raging pandemic was contained.

“Over the years, May 1 has been a unique day in the world of work. It is a day dedicated to workers as partners in the socio-economic development of nations,” he said.

The minister, however, said that the 2020 May Day celebration was different “because we are all taking refuge in our respective homes, staying off the streets in a bid to stay alive and beat an invisible enemy.

“The COVID-19 outbreak has affected modes of work and the utilisation of teleworking is on the increase.

“As you work from home, I urge you to do your best in that regard and to endeavour to demarcate your personal life from work,” he said.

Ngige said that the Federal Government was not unmindful of the fact that businesses in both the private and public sectors had suffered.

“Sustainability of the enterprise has become a subject of concern. The worries precipitated by the COVID-19 crisis are further compounded by worries of maintaining a source of livelihood.

“In this regard, the government and social partners will have a look at the four-pillar plan of policy responses to COVID-19 crisis laid out by ILO.

“These are intended to be human-centred and built on global solidarity and it will be in addition to the Federal Government evolving plan of action to sustain the economy in the context of current global crisis,” he said.

He urged workers to imbibe the ILO laid out workers’ response options to COVID-19 which include efficient social dialogue at all levels.

Others are mobilisation and allocation of human and financial resources without exacerbating the national debt crisis and promotion of solidarity and non-discrimination/stigmatisation of workers and sick persons among others.

  • Over 100 million Nigerian youths lack decent jobs – FG

The Federal Government of Nigeria has said, at least, 100 million of its population are without decent jobs.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, disclosed this while speaking at the 2019 National Migration Dialogue at the State House on Tuesday.

While lamenting that the government was worried about the rate at which Nigerian youths were leaving the country through irregular routes, Ngige said the present government was already working on ways to stem the tide.

“Nigeria is over 200 million and about 60 percent are youths who need employment. Unfortunately, only 10 percent have decent jobs.

“Many are unemployable while others are not employed. We are working that they get job so that they can have a roof over their head, feed and enjoy life”, he lamented.

He said the FG was currently working on the adjustment of education policies in order to improve skills of Nigerian students and thereby discourage irregular migration.

“We have established linkages with the Ministry of Education, industry trade and investment, Youth and Sports and Agriculture. We want to look at our curriculum so that our people can have skills that can be exported,” Ngige added.

Speaking earlier, the Federal Commissioner of National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) Sen. Basheer Garba Mohammed said the dialogue was in line with the present administration’s agenda to create opportunities for the youths. “Our problem is not with Nigerians migrating but with not selling out our rich resources.

The country will spend most of 2020 enlightening citizens on productive ventures they can do,” he added. On his part, the Chief of Mission, International Organisation for Migration (IOM), Mr. Frantz Celestin, said the dialogue will allow Nigeria to chart a course on the localisation and domestication of the resolutions adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and regular Migration (GCM).

He said a comprehensive approach was needed to optimize the overall benefits of migration, while addressing risks and challenges for individuals and communities in countries of origin, transit and destination.

  • Immigration disowns fake job website, says it is not recruiting

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) says it is not recruiting, contrary to information on “some fake dedicated website”.

NIS Comptroller-General, Mr Muhammad Babandede said this in a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday and signed by the Public Relations Officer of the Service, Mr Sunday James.

“The attention of the Comptroller General of Immigration, Mr Muhammad Babandede, has been drawn to a fake dedicated website, www.nisrecruitment.com.ng.

“Where unsuspecting members of the public are required to make payment for accessing application forms for recruitment into the Nigeria Immigration Service.

“I wish to state that the service is not recruiting and has not engaged any agent or vendor to do so on its behalf.

“The public is to note that the said website and the application process is fake and entirely the handiwork of fraudsters. The service is using this medium to advise the public to disregard the said exercise and to also be wary of such fraudulent adverts as all official correspondence on the service are done through the official website: www.immigration.gov.ng,” he said.

  • Job Creation: Obaseki assures Edo youths of preference in new economic order

Job Creation: Obaseki assures Edo youths of preference in new economic order

Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has assured qualified youths in the state of preferential treatment in the new economic order taking shape in the state.

TheNewsGuru reports Obaseki gave the assurance during the courtesy visit by the Association of Esan Professionals (AEP), at Government House, in Benin City.

He said that youths sponsored by AEP for training on welding and fabrication would be linked to firms where their skills would be put to effective use.

“I want to assure you that we will support you and give priority to the youth whose training on welding and fabrication you sponsored, particularly on the projects we are working on.

“I believe that the modular refinery where work has already started will require fabrication work. We will be introducing them to our partners in that transaction,” the governor told his guests.

He commended members of the association for sponsoring youths for the training, noting, “I thank you for your selflessness and interest in our people. You have been able to raise money from your own resources to train youth on welding and fabrication and it is most commendable.”

“Thank you for the effort you are making. I want to inform you that we will obtain their data for our job portal, EdoJobs, and see how we can match them with jobs in the state,” he added.

Earlier, President of the association, Mr. Sam Obaze, explained that the group’s decision to sponsor 10 youths from Esanland at the Petroleum Technology Institute (PTI) in Warri, was to complement governor Obaseki’s initiative to engage youths in productive activity.

Obaze said, “I wish to reiterate that your desire to engage Edo youths productively received a boost when 10 Esan youths, sponsored by our association, were decorated with PTI’s Skills Acquisition Proficiency Certificates in welding and fabrication, after nine months of training.”

He commended the governor for reinstating the Onojie of Uromi, noting, “the people of Esanland thank you most sincerely for this gesture and wish to assure you of our continuous and sustained support.”

  • NBS Boss gets dirty with Reno Omokri over new NBS job report

If the Statistician General of the Federation and CEO of the Nigerian National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Dr. Yemi Kale and Reno Omokri met in real life over discourse on a supposedly new NBS job report, they could have actually thrown physical punches.

TheNewsGuru reports, however, the punches are being thrown on Twitter after Reno Omokri made a tweet alleging the NBS just released another jobs report showing that in the last 21 months, an additional 7.9 million Nigerians became unemployed under Buhari, stressing that this was the first government since 1999 that has never reported job gains, only job losses.

“This is fake news. NBS never released any such report. NBS last report was on unemployment for Q3 2017 with the update up to Q2 2018 in progress. Let’s kindly keep NBS away from politics or fake news. We do not support politicization of data, neither do we respect people that do so,” Yemi responded.

However, evidently, the supposed new NBS job report was published in December 2017.

  • Delta state govt to legislate on job creation programmes

Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa said his government is collaborating with the State House of Assembly to institutionalize the job and wealth creation scheme of his administration.

Governor Okowa made the disclosure at the induction ceremony for the 2017/2018 beneficiaries of the state government’s job creation programme, the Skills Training and Entrepreneurship Programme (STEP) and the Youth Agricultural Entrepreneurs Programme (YAGEP) in Asaba.

The inductees numbering 745 beneficiaries included 209 Brown STEP, 347 Green STEP, 159 YAGEP and 30 Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) in the third cycle of the programme.

“Plans are on to present a bill before the State House of Assembly for the establishment of a Job and Wealth Creation Empowerment Law. I hope that the programme continues in government even when I have left office. If we continue with it as a state, after 10 years the multiplier effect will be felt,” Okowa said.

He advised the beneficiaries to network among themselves with the view of building a web of young entrepreneurs to drive the economy of the state.

He called on the private sector and financial institutions to partner with the state government and the beneficiaries for the growth of the enterprises, stressing “We have done three cycles and we should be able to partner with the private sector and financial institutions. The partnership with World Bank through SEEFOR with the state government came to be because of trust. I am grateful to the beneficiaries of the first and second cycles for making us proud. I hope that the third will do better”.

While disclosing that the state government would soon embark on the 4th Programme Cycle of the STEP/YAGEP Programmes, he charged them to be disciplined, honest, innovative, resourceful and hardworking, committed and determined in order to succeed in their various enterprises.

He also enjoined them to be role models for youths in their communities and to remain good ambassadors of the programme by training other youths to become self-reliant and employers of labour.

According to him, “As a government, I urge you to stay in the realization that you stand out among youths as many will look up to you, you are a role model to other youths in the society, you have to put in a lot of commitment through hard work and honesty, stay patriotic to yourself and Delta State and you will succeed. Challenges will come but if you stay committed, you will be successful.”

“I congratulate you on the successful completion of your training programme, you are privileged to be ambassadors of this programme, once you step out, the world looks out for what you will become, and do with yourself; you should be an embodiment of the programme in character and deed”, he added.

The Governor prayed for their success and officially inducted them into the programme stating: “I am a role model of youths in the state. I will try to make a positive impact on Delta State, God helping me.”

On his part, the Chairman, Job Creation Steering Committee and the Hon. Commissioner for Economic Planning, Dr Kingsley Emu, represented by the Hon Commissioner for Youths Development, Hon. Oghenekaro Ilolo, said that the job creation scheme was hinged on sustainability and development through monitoring and mentoring.

Earlier in his address of welcome, The Chief Job Creation Officer, Prof. Eric Eboh, explained that the third programme cycle of 2017/2018 had 745 beneficiaries including 30 PwDs, pointing out that their training and starter packs were funded by the World Bank/European Union assisted State Employment and Expenditure for Results (SEEFOR) projects.

Prof Eboh recalled that among the 30 PwDs were five sisters from Ibusa who were enrolled into the programme at the instance of Governor Okowa when he encountered them at the Town Hall Meeting at Akwukwu-Igbo last year.

The ceremony featured cultural dance and choir ministrations by the beneficiaries.

Among the dignitaries present at the ceremony were the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Sheriff Oborevwori and other top government functionaries.
