“We are aware that some criminal elements may want to take advantage of this recruitment to scam desperate job applicants.

“Some of them are reported to be operating illegal sites and portals, collecting various sums of money from applicants.

“I want to reiterate that the portal for this exercise can only be accessed through the official service web site, where no fees will be demanded,” he said.

He said that the contract was awarded in 2012 but the augmentation had to come following observations by the contractor.

He said: “FEC has given approval for the augmentation of contract for construction of Ikot-Ekpene border-Aba-Owerri road, Section 1, Phase 1 and the length is 11.26km.

The contract was awarded in 2012 to Arab Contractors at the cost of N3.78b; it came up for augmentation because the contractor actually observed some failures in the contract around some sections of the road.

  • We have created N12m new jobs – Presidency

The Presidency has put the total number of jobs the Muhammadu Buhari led administration has created since it was elected into government at 12 million jobs.

The Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, disclosed this when asked about National Bureau Statistic (NBS) data indicating millions of jobs have been lose when he appeared on today’s Sunrise daily programme.

Disputing the figures released by the NBS, he said the Director General of NBS, Yemi Kale, had admitted to the Federal Government that they had only focused on white collar jobs loses.

“The NBS chief while addressing the Federal cabinet and made admission himself that they had concentrated their analysis over time on white collar jobs and that they haven’t taken into cognisance of jobs creation in the area of agriculture ” he said.

“The Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria made an open claim that they have created 12 million new jobs and nobody has come out to dispute that”.

“When he finished addressing the Federal cabinet last week, the DG was told to go out and address the public about what he just told them. So you’re just saying to us that Jigawa, Kebbi and Ebonyi are reporting the lowest employment rate on the account of agriculture”.

“So I think that it is data collected on the basic of which some of the judgements that have been passed are misleading. There is now a convergence. The data has been unfair to this administration, they have ignored job creation in the areas of agriculture and now that is being integrated and Nigerians will be impressed with us as we have created 12 million new jobs in the area of agriculture.

But the DG of NBS, Yemi Kale in a response to a question tweeted to him on his official twitter handle about Shehu’s claim of admitting of misleading the public on the number job loses across the country denied admitting what the Presidential Spokesman said.

“neither the statistician General nor NBS ever made any such admission at anytime to anybody and the unemployment computations does take into account all sectors, age groups and both rural and urban areas” he said.

  • 2019: Atiku explains how he’ll fix electricity, fight insecurity, create jobs as President

2019: Atiku explains how he’ll fix electricity, fight insecurity, create jobs as President

Former Vice President and 2019 elections presidential aspirant, Atiku Abubakar, has vowed to fixed problems associated with electric power generation in Nigeria.

The 2019 elections presidential aspirant made the vow and explained how he will go about fixing the persistent scourge when he was questioned on what he will do to fix electricity problem of the country.

“We shall increase power generation by ensuring full participation of private sector. We shall issue licences to enable the private sector invest in mini-grid capabilities to service local communities or local govts, states, regions or target industrial clusters.

“Our electricity generation plan shall be diversified to include clean energy (hydro, solar and nuclear) in addition to natural gas. As you may be aware, the transmission infrastructure of the power sector is ageing and in dire need of investment.

“We shall provide incentives – including tax breaks to the private sector to invest in the development of multiple green field mini-grid transmission systems.

“In the mean time we shall consider concessioning to private sector segments of the national grid under some form of PPP over a period of time,” Atiku stated.

Addressing the issue of insecurity in the nation, he “On security, we must understand the root causes of the security challenges in the North. The full economic potentials of the region remains undeveloped resulting in high rates of youth unemployment, high levels of poverty and deprivation and income inequality”.

“Access to education is more restricted, resulting in more out of school children in the North than anywhere else in Nigeria. Unless these issues are tackled, youth restiveness, sectarian violence and other acts of insurgency and terrorism shall continue to bedevil the region.

“My first critical policy priority therefore is to support the northern states in rebuilding their economies and opening up economic opportunities for their citizens. This will reduce frustration and alienation and minimize grievances.

“We shall same time undertake a comprehensive review of our security architecture & enhance its preparedness to meet challenges. As part of the review we shall commence the gradual process of instituting state police & community policing in line with principle of restructuring,” he added.

On job creation, Atiku said, “as long as growth of the economy is driven by the oil sector, job creation is bound to suffer. To tackle the job and poverty challenges bedeviling the economy, we shall focus on four areas”.

“First, we shall stimulate the growth of those economic sectors which are considered the domain of the poor – i.e Agriculture and Micro & Small Enterprises.

“For the MSE sector, we shall set up a Venture Capital Fund to enhance their access to finance and hence their ability to grow and employ more hands.

“Second, we shall set up a National Innovation Fund to support budding entrepreneurs, especially young men and women with brilliant ideas.

“Thirdly, we shall promote a Special Apprenticeship Programme that will support training of up to 1,000,000 youth (including the NYSC) each year in diverse fields, by local master crafts persons. While they undergo the training, we shall match them with potential employers.

“Fourth area of focus is the aggressive promotion of Nigeria as Africa’s leading business process outsourcing destination with potential to create two million direct and indirect jobs,” he stated.

The presidential aspirant explained that his goal is to ensure that Nigeria fully explores the vast opportunities that abound in the global market for IT and IT-enabled services to create quality jobs for our youth.

“Also, to lift our people out of poverty, we shall improve their access to basic services including education, health, electricity and water – by making these services not only available but affordable.

“On currency, the only way the Naira will be more valuable is to apply a diversified structure for our economy. This way, our economy will become more productive. We are committed to revamping the non-oil sector through increased private sector investments.

“We shall diversify our export base by providing export expansion incentives to manufacturers. Increasing our exports means increased foreign exchange earnings and stronger currency,” he said.

  • Google search engine will change job narratives in Nigeria – Presidential aide

Mr Afolabi Imoukhuede, the Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Jobs Creation and Youth Employment, says usage of Google, a search engine, will change job narratives in Nigeria.

Imoukhuede made the assertion on Thursday at the unveiling of Google’s new Job Search Feature in Lagos.

According to him, the job world is really evolving and government is partnering with the private sector to make the needed change.

“The economic strategy of Federal Government to tackle unemployment is going to be both private sector/government-driven.

“There is need to attack the problem of unemployment headlong and partnering with platforms like this will make things easy.

“Government’s focus is how to turn youths into assets and not liability,’’ the president’s aide said.

Also, Mr Ayodeji Adewunmi, the Co-founder, Jobberman, said that unemployment rate in the country was a massive social problem that needed urgent attention.

Adewunmi said tackling unemployment should not be left to government alone, adding that the private sector also has a role to play.

“Getting a job is not an entitlement, but a gift and so when one gets a job, it should be held with utmost care.

“We are having problem with skills set in the country as the school curriculum does not enable one to have skills that will aid in job getting.

“Government does not have the responsibility to create jobs, but the private sector. What government does is to create an enabling environment,’’ he said.

Adewunmi urged government to create policies to aid job creation and also increase its political will to push the policies.

In his remarks, Mr Tayo Olosunde, the Executive Director, Mind the Gap, said the problem that existed as regards jobs creation was that of linkages and not unemployment.

Olosunde said the linkages had to do with youths knowing what to do in life, adding that this could be achieved through building on one’s skill within the immediate environment.

“Technological skills is not all that one needs to get a job, but skills that are relevant to the existing jobs,’’ he said.

Olosunde added that the Google job features would streamline job offers to making things easy for seekers on their platform.

Also, Mr Ogugua Belonwu, the Founder, MyJobMag, urged government to create a platform that would enable youths to access resources.

Belonwu called for more training for human resources departments on employment processes, saying that it would aid them to match candidates with jobs.
He urged Google to put a quality control check in the job features to checkmate offers that came into the features.

The Google Country Director, Ms Juliet Ehimuan-Chiazor, unveiled a new job search feature in its search engine in Lagos on Thursday.

“For the first time, when someone uses his phone or computer to search on Google for a job, he will see a streamlined experience letting them explore, research and find relevant local job postings.

“As of today, job seekers in South Africa, Kenya and Nigeria will be able to use the new job search experience to help them to quickly and easily find opportunities suited to them.

Giving further details about the tool, Ehimuan-Chiazor said: “Users will be able to view at-a-glance details about the posting, such as job title, location, whether it is full-time, part-time or an internship.’’

She said that they would also be able to get detailed information should a job be of interest.

“Using Google Maps integration, job seekers can search for jobs any place they can find on the map.

“If they are signed in, they can even see how long it will take to commute to the job from home,’’ she said.

The country director said that being an open ecosystem, Google was inviting all job sites, platforms and employers, big and small to integrate with them and make their jobs eligible to display in the new jobs search experience.

“This launch builds on Google’s existing commitment in Sub Saharan Africa to improve economic opportunities for job seekers and employers, demonstrated through its Grow with Google initiatives.

“The Digital Skills for Africa programme, Google’s commitment to train one million African youth between April 2016 and March 2017, was achieved and surpassed.

“In July 2017 this programme was extended to see 10 million youth trained by 2022 as well as 100 000 developers trained across the region, these are in bid to get the youth employed,’’ she said.

Ehimuan-Chiazor said that “as of today, job seekers in South Africa, Kenya and Nigeria would be able to use the new job search experience to help them quickly and easily find opportunities suited to them.’’

She said that it would be through an immersive experience that would let them explore jobs from across the web and refine their search to meet their specific needs.

“Users will be able to view at-a-glance details about the posting, such as job title, location, whether it’s full-time, part-time or an internship, as well as detailed information should a job be of interest.

“Using Google Maps integration, job seekers can search for jobs any place they can find on the map, and if they are signed in, they can even see how long it will take to commute to the job from home.

“Searching for a new job can take time, so if you step away from your job search, Google has made it easy to pick up where you left off as well as stay in the loop on opportunities that are right for you.

“Simply push the “get alerts” button to get email notifications when new jobs matching your search appear,’’ Ehimuan-Chiazor said.

The country director said that this being an open ecosystem, Google invited all job sites, platforms and employers, big and small to integrate with them and make their jobs eligible to display in the new jobs search experience.

“With Google’s newly released open documentation, any job provider is able to integrate its content through open structured schema.org web mark-up standards Google supports.

“To optimise the feature and make it more useful, Google is working with a broad and growing cross-section of partners, such as Jobberman, NGCareers, MyJobMag and other job resource websites in Nigeria.

“These collaborations ensure Google is able to present job postings content accurately, as soon as it is posted, to exactly the people that will find it most relevant.

“The launch of this new jobs search experience is part of our broader commitment to improve economic opportunities for job seekers and employers through Google technologies in partnership with the broader employment industry.

“Google is committed to providing useful, accurate and relevant information based on your search queries and helping you connect to your next job.

“In this way we hope to make a contribution towards matching job seekers with jobs and taking steps to tackle the skills gap,” Ehimuan-Chiazor said.

She said that in addition to its digital skills initiative and the new jobs search experience, Google also supports tech start-ups at various stages of their lifecycle through the Launchpad programme.

She said that Google announced last year that Launchpad Accelerator Africa would provide over $3 million in equity-free funding, mentorship, working space and access to expert advisers to over 60 African start-ups over three years.

She added that intensive three-month programmes, held twice per year, would run out of a new Google Launchpad Space in Lagos, the programme’s first location outside of the United States.

She urged web developers who would want to index their job listings with Google to find a walk-through by visiting support.google.com.

  • Facebook expands jobs service to over 40 countries

Facebook has announced that its year-old job-hunting service is expanding to dozens more countries, aiming to connect members with local work.

Facebook vice president Alex Himel announced the move on Wednesday, describing it as a “new stage of the diversification of the social network”.

Since adding a local jobs posting feature early last year in Canada and the US, Facebook has enhanced it to handle tasks such as managing applications, scheduling interviews, and getting alerts when desired types of positions are listed.

“We do feel really good about how that’s worked out in the US, with room for improvement of course,” Himel said.

Jobs can be listed, or applied for, at a “dashboard” devoted to the purpose in Facebook applications.

Use of the basic service is free, but businesses can pay to “boost” posts and more strongly target candidates, according to the Silicon Valley-based social network.

Job posts appear in several locations at the social network, including business pages, Marketplace, and in News Feed.

With more than two billion users around the world, Facebook promises strong potential for connecting people seeking work with jobs in need of filling, especially medium- or low-skill jobs in local enterprises.

“A lot of these businesses who aren’t able to fill their positions elsewhere, they’re seeing success on Facebook,” Himel said.

However, the service is yet to expand to the shores of Nigeria.

  • No employment opportunities in China for Nigerians – Envoy

Mr Wale Oloko, the Consul-General of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Guangzhou, China, on Monday admonished young Nigerians aspiring to travel to China for employment purposes to look elsewhere.

Oloko told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that it had been and would continue to be difficult for unskilled Nigerians to secure even menial jobs in China.

The consul-general, however, said that it was only “exceptionally skilled’’ Nigerians in artificial intelligence, Information Technology and other areas that could be considered for employment in China.

“Nigerians wanting to travel to travel to China for employment must appreciate the fact that China currently has a population of about 1.4 billion people.

“And the Chinese government has to first be able to provide employment for the Chinese.

“And besides that, there is the language barrier for Nigerians wanting to get employment in China to contend with.

“Let me, therefore, say that there are not many employment opportunities for Nigerians or other foreigners who want to travel to any part of China to do menial jobs,’’ he said.

The consul-general said that it was only those Nigerians who were ‘’exceptionally good’’ in some areas yet to be explored by the Chinese that were likely to be offered employment in China.

Oloko, who was visiting Nigeria so as to strengthen China and Nigeria relations, said that China was currently favourable to Nigerians who would be visiting for studies, tourism and business purposes.

He said that the over 70, 000 Nigerians that travelled to the Guangdong Province in 2016, had visited the Chinese province for business, tourism, education and healthcare issues.

The bilateral relations between the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the People’s Republic of China have expanded on growing bilateral trade and strategic cooperation.

China is considered one of Nigeria’s closest allies and partners.

China is also one of Nigeria’s important trading and export partners, with trade relations hitting the 2.7 billion dollar mark in 2017.
