    Russia dares America, invades Ukraine

Vladimir Putin has ordered Russian troops to “maintain peace” in two breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine, hours after the Russian president recognised Donetsk and Luhansk as independent entities.

In two official decrees, Putin on Monday instructed the country’s defence ministry to assume “the function of maintaining peace” in the eastern regions.

The United States said it supports Ukraine’s call for an urgent UN Security Council meeting, calling Russia’s recognition of two Ukrainian breakaway regions an “unprovoked violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity”.

“The Security Council must demand that Russia respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, a UN Member State,” US ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield said in a statement.

US, France and Germany discuss coordinated response to Russia

In a phone call on Monday, the leaders of the US, France and Germany discussed how they “will continue to coordinate their response on next steps” against Russia.

“The leaders strongly condemned President Putin’s decision to recognize the so-called DNR and LNR regions of Ukraine as ‘independent’,” the White House said in a statement.

UN chief says Russia violating Ukraine’s sovereignty: Spokesperson

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres believes Russia has violated the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine by recognising Donetsk and Luhansk as independent entities, a spokesperson said.

“The United Nations, in line with the relevant General Assembly resolutions, remains fully supportive of the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine, within its internationally recognized borders,” UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said in a statement.

US official says Russian troops could move into pro-Moscow regions of Ukraine in the coming hours

The US expects Russian troops could move into the Donbas region of Ukraine as soon as Monday evening or Tuesday eastern time, after Russian President Vladimir Putin recognizedthe two pro-Moscow territories as independent, a senior US official familiar with latest the intelligence tells CNN.

The US is still seeing preparations for a broader potential invasion including loading amphibious ships and
    equipment for airborne units.

President Joe Biden plans to impose new sanctions on trade and financing in the two territories in response to Putin’s moves, the White House said Monday. In a statement, the White House said Biden would sign an executive order that would “prohibit new investment, trade, and financing by US persons to, from, or in the so-called DNR and LNR regions of Ukraine.”
Putin signed decrees recognizing the Donetsk People’s Republic and the Luhansk People’s Republic in a ceremony carried on state television earlier Monday.
The US is declining to specify whether so-called “peacekeeping” forces sent from Russia into eastern Ukraine would constitute a further invasion of the country.
Instead, the official said Russian forces have been operating in the Donbas region since Moscow’s first incursion into the country in 2014.
“Russian troops moving into Donbas would not itself be a new step. Russia has had forces in the Donbas region for the past eight years,” the official said.
The official, speaking to reporters on the condition of anonymity, said the US would monitor Russian actions on the ground, but declined to say whether the entry of troops would trigger the large package of sanctions that have been promised.

PresidentBiden to address Americans on Russia, Ukraine crisis

President Joe Biden will update Americans on Tuesday afternoon on the evolving crisis at Ukraine’s border with Russia.

Speaking from the East Room of the White House at 3:30 p.m. ET, Biden is expected to reiterate U.S. commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Biden is also slated to say that his administration is still open to high-level diplomacy should Russian President Vladimir Putin elect to deescalate tensions.

For months, the U.S. and its Western allies have watched a steady buildup of Kremlin forces along Ukraine’s border with Russia and Belarus. The increased military presence mimics Russia’s playbook ahead of its 2014 illegal annexation of Crimea, a peninsula on the Black Sea, which sparked international uproar and triggered sanctions against Moscow.

The Kremlin has denied that the more than 100,000 Russian troops equipped with advanced military equipment along Ukraine’s borders are preparing for an invasion.

Biden, who spoke to Putin on Saturday from Camp David, warned his Russian counterpart that if there is a further invasion of Ukraine, Washington and its allies will impose “swift and severe costs.”

Biden said that while the U.S. remains prepared to engage in diplomacy, “we are equally prepared for other scenarios.”

Biden’s call with Putin, which lasted about an hour, was followed up on Sunday with a separate phone call to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The two leaders also spoke for an hour.

Over the weekend, Biden’s national security advisor Jake Sullivan gave a grim description of what a Russian invasion of Ukraine might look like and urged Americans to depart the country immediately.

“If there is a military invasion of Ukraine by Russia, it’s likely to begin with a significant barrage of missiles and bomb attacks,” Sullivan said on Sunday.

“It would then be followed by an onslaught of a ground force moving across the Ukrainian frontier,” he said, adding that there would be a substantial number of civilians caught in the crossfire.

Sullivan said that in the past 10 days the Kremlin has accelerated its extraordinary military buildup. Russia’s current force posture in the region could “launch a military action very, very rapidly,” he said.

Over the weekend, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin ordered U.S. troops who deployed to Ukraine last year to leave the country and reposition elsewhere in Europe.

In November, 160 members of the Florida National Guard, assigned to the 53rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, deployed to Ukraine to train with local forces.

Russia has said that a diplomatic solution to its escalating standoff with the West is still possible.

In a televised meeting, President Vladimir Putin was told that diplomatic talks had not yet been been exhausted.

The comments come after more than a dozen nations urged their citizens to leave Ukraine, and the US said aerial bombardments could begin “at any time”.

Russia has always denied plans to invade Ukraine, despite massing more than 100,000 troops on the border.

A statement said Mr Johnson would hold a Cobra meeting on Tuesday to discuss the UK’s response to the pressures.

Macron speaks with President Biden ahead of trip to Moscow

French President Emmanuel Macron spoke with U.S. President Joe Biden on Sunday ahead of a trip to Moscow.

The White House disclosed this in a statement.

“The leaders discussed ongoing diplomatic and deterrence efforts in response to Russia’s continued military build-up on Ukraine’s borders,.

“And (they) affirmed their support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the White House said.

A statement from the Élysée Palace said the two leaders talked for about 40 minutes.

Macron travels to Moscow on Monday to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin.

They had already spoken by telephone three times in the past few days.

France currently holds the rotating presidency of the European Union (EU).

Before his visit to the Kremlin, Macron coordinated his stance with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who is making his inaugural visit to Washington to see Biden on Monday.

The Ukraine conflict will also play an important role in the Biden-Scholz meeting.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke with French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian on Sunday about ongoing efforts by NATO allies, EU partners, G7 members, and other partners “to address Russia’s continued military build-up on Ukraine’s borders.

“And the importance of continuing to support Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the State Department said.

NiDCOM urges Nigerians in Ukraine to remain calm

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) on Sunday called on Nigerian citizens living in Ukraine to remain calm, amid growing fears that Russia could invade Ukraine.

The call is contained in a statement by Mr Gabriel Odu, a Media, Public Relations, and Protocol Officer at NiDCOM.

The statement made it clear that Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairman/CEO of NiDCOM had earlier urged Nigerians in Ukraine to be calm and security conscious in view of the strained relations between Ukraine and Russia.

“Dabiri-Erewa has assured that the Nigerian Embassy in Kiev, Ukraine is doing all it can to ensure the safety and security of all Nigerians in that country.

“The NiDCOM boss also urged Nigerian citizens in Ukraine to visit the embassy’s website and duly follow the registration processes.

“Meanwhile a statement from the Nigerian Embassy in Kiev has further provided information and necessary action with regards to emergencies and concerns,” the stayement quoted Dabiri-Erewa as saying.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Joe Biden has announced the increase of U.S. troops in Europe to strengthen North Atlantic Treaty Organisation’s (NATO’s) eastern flank as a response to the build-up of Russian troops near the Ukrainian border.

A total of 1,700 troops will be redeployed from the U.S. to Poland, while a further 300 troops are to be sent to Germany.

In turn, some 1,000 U.S. troops currently stationed in Germany will be redeployed to Romania, which shares a border with Ukraine.

ISIS leader blew himself, family up during U.S. raid – Biden

U.S. President Joe Biden on Thursday said Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi, leader of the violent Islamic State group, ISIS, blew himself up during an overnight raid carried out by U.S. military forces in northwest Syria.

“Thanks to the bravery of our troops, this horrible terrorist leader is no more.

“Last night, operating on my orders, the United States military forces successfully removed a major terrorist threat to the world, the global leader of ISIS,” Biden said in a statement from the White House.

Biden was grateful for the immense courage, skill and determination of the U.S. forces who skillfully executed this incredibly challenging mission.

“The members of our military are the solid-steel backbone of this nation, ready to fly into danger at a moment’s notice to keep our country and the American people safe, as well as our allies,’’ he said.

Al-Qurayshi, also known as Hajji Abdullah, took over as head of ISIS in 2019, days after the group’s former leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, died during a U.S. raid in the same area.

“Since then, ISIS has directed terrorist operations targeting Americans, our allies and our partners, and countless civilians in the Middle East, Africa and in South Asia,” Biden said.

The president said al-Qurayshi “oversaw the spread of ISIS-affiliated terrorist groups around the world” and was the “driving force” behind the genocide of Yazidis in northwestern Iraq in 2014.

“We all remember the gut-wrenching stories, the mass slaughters that wiped out entire villages

“Thousands of women and young girls sold into slavery; rape used as a weapon of war.”

Biden said that al-Qurayshi died just like al-Baghdadi — by exploding a bomb that killed himself and members of his family, including women and children, as U.S. forces approached.

“In a final act of desperate cowardice, with no regard to the lives of his family or others in the building, he chose to blow himself up … taking several members of his family with him — just as his predecessor did,” he said.

The president said he had directed the Department of Defense to “take every precaution possible to minimise civilian casualties.”

“Knowing this terrorist had chosen to surround himself with families, including children, we made a choice to pursue a special forces raid, with greater risk to our own people, rather than targeting him with an airstrike,” Biden said.

Biden taps into U.S. strategic petroleum reserve to lower cost of gas

President Joe Biden has authorized release from the strategic petroleum reserve of the United States of America (USA) in order to lower the cost of gas in his country.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Biden authorized the Department of Energy to make available releases of 50 million barrels of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to lower gas and oil prices for Americans.

“Today I’m announcing action to lower the cost of gas and oil for American families. The Department of Energy will make available releases of 50 million barrels of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to lower gas and oil prices for Americans.

“I have been working with countries across the world to address the lack of supply. As a result of our diplomatic efforts, this step will be taken in parallel with other major energy consuming nations including China, India, Japan, Republic of Korea and the United Kingdom,” Biden said.

Facing rising consumer discontent ahead of Americans hitting the road for the Thanksgiving holiday, Biden called it the “largest-ever release” when announcing the action in remarks on Tuesday.

  • What Biden’s removal of Nigeria from Religious Violation Watchlist Means – By Garba Shehu

What Biden’s removal of Nigeria from Religious Violation Watchlist Means – By Garba Shehu

    By Garba Shehu

The removal of Nigeria from the religious violators watchlist by the Biden-led US administration in the run-up to the visit of Anthony Blinken, the Secretary of State is a triumph of diplomacy and sagacity over hate-driven foreign policy, itself founded on false propaganda.

President Muhammadu Buhari is truly satisfied with the decision by the United States to remove Nigeria from that unwanted list of countries. Blinken said the decision of the Joe Biden Government on this was “based on facts.”

In expressing the country’s appreciation for this, the President noted that there is freedom of worship in Nigeria, and no one is discriminated against on the basis of his or her faith.

Since Nigeria was included in December 2020, in the aftermath of the Donald Trump’s election loss, it has taken only 11 months for this decision to be reversed under the Biden administration.

This sad and uncalled for ban came on the heels of 12 months of lies by some extremist groups and the banned terrorist group the Independent People of Biafra, IPOB’s well-funded international media campaign.

Nigeria should never have been on the list. It was included after paid right-wing American lobbyists were funded millions of dollars by IPOB to spread falsehoods and misinformation about Nigeria. Those who willingly took money from terrorists spread falsehoods against a democratically elected government. They took advantage of well-meaning, God-fearing Americans to whom they spread their lies.

Their aim was to drive a wedge, for political advantage, between the two great religions and by doing so, make true their fake claims that Muslims and Christians cannot live side-by-side in love and peace. They did not care if their maliciousness was the cause of religious tension. In fact, it is possible they sought to encourage it to prove their point. Yet, despite all the funds at their disposal, they only convinced for a brief time those who had been voted out of office by US citizens to add Nigeria to the list.

It is a fallacy to suggest Nigeria lacks religious freedom. A visit to any city will see a surfeit of posters for religious groups, for Muslims and Christians alike. Nigerians wear our faith on our sleeves.

Nigeria is one of the most religious nations in the world – near equally balanced between Muslims and Christians. It is well-known the President counts amongst his personal friends many global Christian leaders, though he himself is Muslim; our Vice President is an Evangelical pastor; our cabinet is equally balanced between Christians and Muslims.

This is not to say there are no tensions. The President and all who serve in his administration know there are. And they are being addressed: for instance, the present administration is the only government since independence to introduce a plan to address farmer-herder clashes. Today that plan is working. Many states are taking the lead in its implementation because they, not the Federal Government control land.

What we said at the time of the listing remains true that the government under President Muhammadu Buhari is run in accordance with our constitution. The losses of life and threats to the lives of our civilian populations from communal and inter-communal violence, banditry and terrorism are of great concern to the administration. It is, therefore, incorrect for anyone to assume the position that the government is doing nothing to address these intertwined threats.

This administration has successfully dispossessed terrorists in the Northeast of all land and territory that they held; forcing them into hiding out amongst remote forests and across boarders and they are being fought in those locations.

To address the cases of violence against the civilian population in the face of the harsh odds imposed by the COVID economy, this administration just recently recruited 10,000 new constables. All arms of the Military and paramilitary agencies have been authorised to recruit additional men. The procurement of military hardware has been intensified.

With this egregious listing removed, US-Nigeria relations are now reset, and we can jointly seek resolution to other critical matters – including the fight against terrorists across the Sahel region. This task was complicated by the now reversed decision. To that end, the present administration looks forward to working with the Biden administration on matters, bilateral and multilateral that are important to our friendly states.

President Buhari is satisfied with the decision by the United States to remove Nigeria from a list of countries deemed to lack religious freedom, placed there by a previous US administration no longer in office.

Biden mourns 700,000 Americans lost to COVID-19

U.S. President Joe Biden has mourned the about 700,000 Americans who lost their lives to COVID-19.

Biden, in his twitter handle on Saturday night, said: “Today, we mark another grim and heartbreaking milestone in this pandemic: over 700,000 Americans lost.

“As we acknowledge the tragic scale of this death toll, we must remember each person and the life they lived.’’

The White House, also in a statement, described the 700,000 deaths to COVID-19 as a “painful milestone”.

“To heal we must remember, and as our nation mourns the painful milestone of 700,000 American deaths due to COVID-19, we must not become numb to the sorrow.

“On this day, and every day, we remember all those we have lost to this pandemic and we pray for their loved ones left behind who are missing a piece of their soul.

“As we do, the astonishing death toll is yet another reminder of just how important it is to get vaccinated.

“The vaccines are safe, free, and easy—and we have made extraordinary progress in our fight against COVID-19 over the last eight months because of the vaccines,’’ he said.

U.S. President Biden visits wounded soldiers in hospital

U.S. President Joe Biden visited wounded soldiers in hospital on Thursday, the White House said.

Biden visited troops at Walter Reed military hospital in Bethesda, near Washington, on Thursday evening accompanied by first lady Jill Biden.

One of the reasons Biden gave for deciding to withdraw U.S. troops from Afghanistan was that he did not want to send further generations of Americans to war there.

Biden has a special relationship with soldiers and the military. His son Beau, who died of a brain tumor in 2015, was an officer in Iraq in 2008/2009.

Biden announced the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan in April.

He noted that he was the first president in 40 years who knew what it meant to have a child serving in the military in a war zone.

  • Biden calls on New York Governor to resign

Biden calls on New York Governor to resign

US President Joe Biden has called on New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo to resign after an investigation found that he had sexually harassed 11 women.

Biden, at a White House press conference on Tuesday, said he believed the prominent democrat should resign.

When asked if the governor should be impeached, Biden said, “Let’s take one thing at a time here.“

“I think he should resign. I understand that the state legislature may decide to impeach, I don’t know that for a fact. I haven’t read all that data,” the president said.

Biden added that he had not read the report or spoken to Cuomo.

New York Attorney-General Letitia James released the report on Tuesday, saying at a press conference that Cuomo had “sexually harassed current and former state employees in violation of both federal and state laws.

The independent investigation found that Cuomo harassed multiple women, many of whom were young women, by engaging in unwanted groping, kisses, hugging and by making inappropriate comments.

In a video statement following James’s report, Cuomo said that he had not sexually harassed anyone and his actions with the 11 female accusers were portrayed incorrectly due to cultural and generational differences.

He painted himself as a champion of sexual assault victims, apologising to Charlotte Bennett, one of his accusers, whom the governor said he was trying to help.

He said he would institute new sexual harassment policies for the state.

Cuomo also released a report on Tuesday that contains dozens of photos showing him touching and kissing numerous people, including Biden.

He also included a photo of former President Barack Obama hugging a Hurricane Sandy victim.

When asked about the use of the photo, Biden said, “I’m sure there were some embraces that were totally innocent, but apparently the attorney-general decided there were things that weren’t.”
