Mo Abudu, Joke Silva kicks against Sky News over COVID-19 article

Nigerian filmmaker, Mo Abudu and actress, Joke Silva have slammed Sky News, a British media organisation, over an article alleged to be “derogatory” to African heritage.

TheNewsGuru recalls that Sky News had on Saturday published an article originally titled “Spiky coronavirus haircut growing in popularity in Africa”, which scrutinised the rise of a new hairstyle among Kenyan women amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The hairstyle, called “coronavirus haircut”, is done using a technique called threading, which uses yarn, rather than expensive fake hair braids.

The media platform would, however, correct the article later, changing the headline to “Kenyan hairdresser says she is offering customers a ‘corona hairstyle’.”

But reacting to the article in their individual social media pages, the duo wondered why the media outlet would generalise a practice among few women to Africa as a whole.

They also condemned Sky News for presenting a hairstyle which has been in existence for years as a sprout of the coronavirus pandemic.

Silva called on the media outlet to take down the article, claiming it captures the African continent in a bad light.

“…on behalf of myself and many other African women who have shown their displeasure of this post, (spiky coronavirusvhairstyle). I would like to urge you to take this post down as soon as possible. It is derogatory and condescending to us, our forefathers, our foremothers and generations to come,” she wrote on her Instagram.

In the same vein, Abudu said the article’s original headline and structure was indicative of the west’s age-long hostile media narrative report about Africa.

“After my post and that of many others, highlighting an exploitative, sensational and grossly inaccurate news story by @SkyNews, this morning they have made substantial changes to both the headline and narrative of the article,” she also wrote on her Instagram.

“The original headline was about a ‘spiky coronavirus haircut growing in popularity in Africa’. By the time they took note of all our objections, it had been revised to a Kenyan hairdresser offering what she calls a ‘corona hairstyle’.

“I felt so strongly that a story about a local neighborhood hairdresser in Kenya had somehow grown to encompass the whole of Africa and that a centuries-old hairstyle, with a fascinating history, had been reduced to a pandemic fad.⁣”

She noted that the fact that the article was adjusted also showed that there is power in the voices of the people when they uninamously stand against perceived wrong in the society.

“My reason for highlighting this significant retraction and revision by @SkyNews is to show that our voices have power and we must use them whenever we feel marginalised, generalised and taken for granted by Western media,” she added.

  • I attended University despite already having children- Joke Silva

Nollywood actress, Joke Silva has revealed that she attended University despite already having children.

She made this known on Friday’s edition of TV talk-show, ‘Your View’.

”I attended the University after giving birth to two children and there was still a professor that harassed. It has nothing to do with the way a girl is dressed”.

On her hopes for Nigeria she said: ”I believe Nigeria cannot move with just one political party, we must have two parties in place. I believe in Nigeria totally. Nigeria has come into a space where she hasn’t been allowed to make her mistakes undercover of anonymity. Social media is out there and we put everything out there. There are mistakes other countries have made and there was no social media at the time. Every time we talk about Nigeria, we talk about our country with such disdain. I believe in Nigeria totally. Let us make our mistakes”.

Silva noted that at times women put too much pressure on men.

“We need to raise our men in a way that we are not putting too much pressure on them”, she said.

Speaking further, the outspoken actress noted that she was once trolled on social media.

“After the election I posted the picture of the APC leader and I said congratulations now hit the ground running .I had almost 10,000 comments. Usually when I post, I just move on to other things. Someone called me, asking me If I was okay. It didn’t hurt me, It just made me angry. What if it I was a young person who doesn’t have that strong belief? That person can commit suicide”.

  • We need to talk to our boys about rape-Joke Silva

Joke Silva, a popular Nollywood actress has said more boys need to be given orientation about rape.

Silva, who is married to Olu Jacobs, a fellow Nollywood veteran, made this known in an interview with Hip TV.

“We need to talk to our boys to let them understand that sex though a beautiful thing shouldn’t be a thing of violation. We still need to tell our young ladies to speak up, that are important. The narrative has to go to the young boys that rape is not a rite of passage. A lot of young men have been socialized to believe that when a woman says ‘No’ she actually means ‘Yes’ “.

Speaking further, she expressed her opinion on feminism, adding that feminism is about mutual respect.

“Feminism simply means being treated like a human being; it’s simply about mutual respect. Why feminism has taken a front burner is simply because over the years, women have been maltreated for so many reasons”.

TheNewsGuru recalls that in 2018, Joke Silva had revealed that the lifestyles flaunted on social media by celebrities cannot be funded by earnings from acting.

In her words:Don’t be deceived by what goes on on social media. Obviously, there is something else such actors are doing, perhaps other businesses to shore up their income,” she said.

“The reality is that on the earning capacity of an actor in Nigeria, you cannot have that sort of lifestyle in this economy. Yes, part of our industry is to have glamour but also the other part is to have reality”, she told Genevieve Magazine.

Joke Silva months back in an interview with Daily Times opened up on why marriages break.

In her words:” That is why the marriages are not making it. The women are like, “excuse me, I’ve gone to school, I do my share in this house” you know? Let me give you an example; I remember I had a brief conversation with someone where I said “Oh! WOW! Your house is beautiful. Ah! Well done to you and your wife.” He said “What did she contribute? It was me. I built it.”

And I said “Sweetie, the fact that she wasn’t asking you for the money and she was making sure it was possible for you to build the house, if she did not give you a dime towards the house, her support to you building the house is her share in the house. Do you understand?

“But you know, they weren’t built up to think like that so you find that a lot of mothers will say; when you are building your house, if it’s only the roof, if it’s only a few tiles you can buy, you should buy it so that you’ll have a claim of the house.”

  • Desperate actresses end up being passed around- Joke Silva

In recent times tales of sex for roles has been rife in Nollywood which is denting the image of the industry.

Veteran actress and thespian, Joke Silva in a chat with Qed.ng affirmed that only desperate actresses end up being passed around.

The ageless screen goddess who is a mentor to several young actresses noted that casting couch is still a major issue in Nollywood. She added that the hunger to make a name for themselves make these actresses engage in it.

“Unfortunately, the casting couch issue is alive in Nollywood. Sometimes there is this hunger to get the work. Maybe you’ve gone to several auditions and you haven’t gotten the work, then somebody tells you that it is because you are not doing what you should do that is when you are not getting the work.

“What I say to them is don’t believe it. By the time the producer, director, production manager or whoever insists on sleeping with you, it is very likely you will end up not getting the work.

“Some of the sad stories we hear is that because some people are so desperate, they end up getting passed around.”

Making a reference to entrepreneurship, Silva said up and coming actresses should not compromise their pride to get by.

“There is no need for that. As an entrepreneur, you go round looking for money and you are probably going to get several noes before you get your yes.

“It’s the same with audition. You must keep your dignity. Find something else to keep body and soul together.

“That is why you hear that abroad people wait tables or work in restaurants because they need something to keep body and soul together until that break happens.

“You should be proud as long as you are earning honest money. If possible train yourself in audition skills. We need more women producers, more women scriptwriters and more women stories so that we can then absorb a lot of women in the industry”.

Se Doctor Silva bimo ni? (meaning does Dr. Silva have a child?) . I was so confused and when I got home I told my mum, ‘I met this lady that says you never had a child.’ My mum froze and she said, ‘Don’t mind them, they are used to rubbish talk.’

But I got to know years later when I wanted to travel and was looking for my passport where my mum kept it. Since she was not around, I opened the box in her absence and I saw my adoption papers. Hear her: “Several years later, I brought home the one I wanted to marry and my mum asked my husband, if he knew I was adopted and he answered in affirmation that I had already told him.

Many years later, there was another memory of a very nasty member of our family. My mummy always very supportive of her relatives sat on our balcony and said my aunty would never be supportive of her because in the Yoruba language, ‘won o kuku bimo’ (she never supported her because she didn’t have a child of her own.)

When I heard about it I did what Pastor Rapu called the unchristian thing. (May God forgive me. I dealt with her, till today, she never believed what I did that day to her, but I dealt with her by being so cold towards her. She would never forget it.

She also revealed how she told her children she is an adopted child

“I then realized that I needed to tell my children about my adoption. I don’t want anybody to tell them in a way it wouldn’t be supportive. I called my children and I told them the ABC of my adoption story. They now told me that grandma had already told them. It was then I learn that somebody in my son’s school had told him about his mum being adopted. He told grandma and grandma told him everything. Little wonder, my mum and Soji, my son were very close. Till she died, my mum my son remained inseparable”.

According to the revered role interpreter: “I think I’m very happy more women are coming out to talk about it. It is important their partners must give themselves space. Once the violence starts, give yourself space! I think it is the most spirit destroying action one can put on their lover. And it doesn’t only happen to women. It happens to men as well. I think it is sad that any relationship gets to that point where you need to break the spirit” she said.

Silva who is married to Olu Jacobs, Nollywood veteran actor, also stated that domestic violence victims need to know what their threshold of pain is, rather than enduring the pain in the name of protecting their marriage.

“ I think it’s important for people to know what their thresh hold of pain is, what their thresh hold of acceptability is, I think sometimes in this society we tend to say “Oh, you must stay in the marriage no matter what he does to you”.
