WAR: Jordan backs Palestine over Israel

Following the Hamas- Israel crisis, King Abdullah II of Jordan has declared support for Palestine, saying peace is not possible in the Middle East without the emergence of an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel.

Abdullah II spoke amid the ongoing armed conflict between Israel and Hamas, the Palestinian militant group that has left many either dead or seriously wonded.

Recall that Hamas, the militant group that controls Gaza, launched a large-scale attack on Israel, killing at least 1,200 people and kidnapping around 150 others over the weekend.

Retaliatory airstrikes by Israeli forces on Gaza also left at least 900 dead.

Addressing deputies in a speech at the opening of a new parliamentary session on Wednesday, the Jordanian King said, “Our region will never be secure nor stable without achieving just and comprehensive peace on the basis of the two-state solution.”

According to him, there cannot be ‘stability, security or peace’ in the region without a sovereign Palestinian state on 1967 borders.

“A Palestinian independent and sovereign state should be on June 4th, 1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital, and so that the cycles of killing, whose ultimate victims are innocent civilians, end,” he added.

  • Shrinking budget: UN agency raises alarm over Syrian refugee relief in Jordan

Shrinking budget: UN agency raises alarm over Syrian refugee relief in Jordan

UNHCR has warned of “serious consequences” for refugees in Jordan if no adequate funding is added to its shrinking budget.

The UN refugee agency has issued a recent appeal calling for “immediate” assistance after other agencies announced plans to reduce health services and food help in camps in Jordan.

Jordanian government-owned Al-Mamlakah TV commented on a UNHCR report which said that the UN refugee agency had only received 32 percent of its financial needs for 2023, or “$125.7 million of its annual budget of $390.11 million.”

In light of this 68 percent deficit, Dominik Bartsch, the agency’s representative to Jordan, has warned of a “humanitarian crisis and serious consequences for refugees and host communities.”

“The current lack of funding for the refugee response is undermining the great achievements made in over a decade,” he added.

Now, there is an imminent risk that the situation is sliding back into a humanitarian crisis, with serious consequences for refugees and host communities.

Dominik Bartsch, UNHCR’s representative to Jordan said that there was growing concern that Jordan’s ability to include refugees in healthcare and education systems might be eroded.

“Sustained support over the years has allowed Syrian refugees to access the labour market,” Bartsch said.

“Now, there is an imminent risk that the situation is sliding back into a humanitarian crisis, with serious consequences for refugees and host communities.”

Bartsch praised Jordanian efforts in past years in giving assistance to refugees.

The country issued a record 62,000 work permits to Syrians in 2021, according to UNHCR.

This was a result of the international community committing funding and expanded trade facilitation under the Jordan Compact, an initiative to improve access to education and legal employment for Syrians forced to flee their homes.

Bartsch added: “Jordan has done so much, and donors need to recognise what is at risk.”

He called for a “determined and coordinated action … to keep the success story in Jordan alive.”

Bartsch said that the lack of assistance was exacerbating the vulnerability of refugees.

He added: “The number of refugee families who cannot pay their rent and are at risk of eviction from their homes rose by 66 percent from December 2022 to February 2023.”

The representative warned of another wave of refugees toward Europe should no “immediate action” be taken to improve their financial situation in Jordan.

“Another consequence of lack of assistance is that it may push refugees onto irregular routes toward Europe. UNHCR is concerned about their protection after leaving Jordan as they are exposed to exploitation, abuse, and death.

“The recent shipwreck off Greece was a stark reminder that people who do not see a perspective, make desperate choices,” he said.

The World Food Programme has recently announced a reduction of the value of its monthly food assistance for refugees in Jordan’s refugee camps, from around $32 to $21.

The UNHCR has said that a number of nongovernmental organisations providing health services have left Zaatari and Azraq camps in Jordan, leading to serious shortages and quality issues of remaining facilities.

Jordan has said it is providing refuge to about 1.3 million Syrians, including some 670,000 officially registered with the UNHCR as refugees, making the kingdom host to the world’s second-largest population of Syrian refugees per capita after Lebanon.

Turkiye has accepted 3.6 million Syrian refugees, while Lebanon hosts almost 1 million, according to the UNHCR.

Jordan hosts the Zaatari camp, the largest in the Middle East, and the Azraq camp. Most Syrians in Jordan live in cities and urban centers, however, where they work in certain industries.

While Jordan has been stepping up efforts for a voluntary return of Syrian refugees, a recent UNHCR study found that only 0.8 percent of them are willing to go back home.

The survey revealed that around 97 percent of Syrian refugees in Jordan have no intention of returning home in the next 12 months due to security and economic concerns, including a lack of housing and basic amenities in Syria.

Jordan has announced that it has begun coordinating with the Syrian government and relevant UN organisations to facilitate the voluntary return of some 1,000 Syrian refugees.

The decision was announced on May 1 following a landmark meeting in Amman of foreign ministers from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iraq, and Jordan. Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad also attended.

  • Liverpool boss Klopp is just a bully – Jordan

Liverpool boss Klopp is just a bully – Jordan

Former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan has branded Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp a bully.

The German has been involved in various bust-ups with referees and other officials this season.

The latest came in their 4-3 win over Tottenham at the weekend, the with Reds coach berating referee Paul Tierney and his assistant all game.

“Jurgen Klopp is one of the best managers the Premier League has produced for some time,” he told talkSPORT.

“But he is a bully at times and I think some of the best managers are bullies. I think you would want your manager of your team to be a person who was capable of carrying his weight and pushing themselves around.

“(But) it was unnecessary and unacceptable his little antics running up to the fourth official. Ironically, karma intervened and he pulled a hamstring or whatever but what was more concerning was the allegations he made about the official.

“With all due respect to Klopp, he cannot make those observations he’s made about an official without being accountable for them.

“He’s effectively questioned the integrity of an official and suggested there is bias and that he is a man not professional enough to referee games. He needs to go the whole hog of what he said to him if he’s going to bring it up.”

Nigerians earn visas on arrival to Jordan

The Executive Secretary, Nigeria Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC) says its policies on enhancing Nigeria’s image and pilgrimage has earned the country visas on arrival to Jordan.

Pam made this known during an interview with NAN on the state of the nation on Monday in Abuja.

According to him, the NCPC has made sure it built a good relationship not only with stakeholders within the country but with the host countries outside Nigeria.

“At this moment, we have good relationship with Jordan; we have visas on arrival, it is only Nigerians who go there get visas on arrival now.

“It took this commission a very good policy to build bilateral relationship with our host countries outside; we can beat our chest today that we opened the road for Nigerians to have visas on arrival to Jordan,” he said.

Another policy Pam said the commission initiated to enhance the pilgrims exercise was building integrity for acceptability by partners involved.

“We are glad that immediately I came into office, first and foremost, we tried to build on an integrity for acceptability for our partners and our host countries, who we all know are Israel and Jordan and others.

“Making sure that we have fished out people running away, staying in those lands illegally, which is called abscondment.

“And that is one policy we made sure we built to ensure people do not use the opportunity for pilgrimage to mar the image of Nigeria.

“And that is really working; that is why our host countries are inviting us to come for more pilgrim exercises knowing that we have built a very good image for the country,” he added.

According to him “Of all the collaborations only that which has materialized with speed is NASENI”. He stressed.
Earlier in the month, the Federal Government through NASENI has signed MoU with Ebsilon Hashemite kingdom of Jordan on Education and Training Development to establish technology transfer that would enable NASENI, through the implementation of CertVeri System to offer state-of-art online instantaneous certificates verification to beneficiaries. The system will enable NASENI to help different entities (ministries, embassies, universities, educational entities and some other government departments, etc.) to use CertVeri System as one-stop station to digitally display their certificates for authentication whenever it is required.
The MoU that NASENI signed with the Decapolis on Food & Agriculture Traceability Technology Solution will enable Nigeria to exploit the Decapolis Food Guard platform, to certify the safety and quality of Nigerian food and agriculture products and to improve the efficiency of production and farming operations.
The NASENI deal with the Jordanese organizations was aimed at creating new economic development paths for Nigeria’s industrialization which had been the focus and commitment of the Agency. According to the EVC/CE, NASENI is working with Gheras, Decapolis and Ebsilon Group, Hashemite kingdom of Jordan on the areas of Technology Transfer, domestication of Education and Training Development and on Food/Agriculture Traceability Technology Solutions.
Earlier in his remarks, the Executive Vice Chairman however said it was the commitment, hard work, transformational zeal of the Nigerian Ambassador to Jordan to see how the structures of Nigeria economic system back home would prosper that made the signing of the MoU possible. He said the Ambassador was able to look inwards and found veritable areas of collaboration between Nigeria and Jordan, especially in educational system and agriculture, those areas he knew would benefit the two countries and within the mandate of NASENI”.
Prof Haruna explained that the team was on familiarization visit to the Agency and also for technical assessment concerning the implementation of the two key projects contained in the MoU in order to have them domesticated in Nigeria. “The collaboration will revolutionize how we do agriculture and technology in the country. The MoU is not a regular one, the implementation has started in Nigeria with their visit” said EVC/CE.
Responding, Ambassador Faruk Yabo, said he was highly delighted and honoured by the Agency. He said that the mandate given to him by President Muhammadu Buhari in Jordan was to make sure that Nigeria entered into bilateral relationship with institutions from Nigeria and Jordan. “Of all the collaborations that has materialized with speed is NASENI”.
The Ambassador noted that Nigeria has strong military collaboration with Jordan, adding that the model in Jordan could work in Nigeria as Jordan has unique location and were able to maintain relations with neighbouring countries despite the crisis surrounding the country.
He advised the government that “it is only technology that can make Nigeria catch up with development around the world and the reason for Nigeria’s on- going collaboration with Jordan.”
Also in his response, Mr. Joudi Ahmad Sheikh Sa’id, Chief Executive Officer, Ebsilon for Education and Training Development said it was his first time of meeting a hardworking Ambassador who was ready to establish a working relationship with Jordan. “We are trying to do something for our countries and I believe we will work together to achieve this” he said.
  • Why Nigerian pilgrims will go to Jordan – NCPC boss

Why Nigerian pilgrims will go to Jordan – NCPC boss

Rev. Yakubu Pam, the Executive Secretary, Nigeria Christian Pilgrims Commission (NCPC), says the ongoing crisis in Gaza is part of reasons why pilgrims from Nigeria will not go to Isreal but the Kingdom of Jordan to perform this year’s pilgrimage.

Mr Ayuba Pam, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the executive secretary, said this in statement on Saturday in Jos.

Pam said that the executive secretary offered the explanation on Friday night at during a live NTA programme in Jos.

The media said that NCPC boss said that the insistence by the Israeli Government that pilgrims must take their own version of COVID-19 vaccines was another reason for the Jordan pilgrimage.

He said Pam added that Jordan also has over 100 holy sites for pilgrims to visit, insisting it will not change the purpose of the spiritual exercise.

“Jordan has many holy sites just like Israel. There are more than 100 holy sites all over the world and by the mandate given to the Commission by the 2007 Act of Paliarment that Established it pilgrims can visit all these sites.

“But the decision to embark on the Jordan pilgrimage was due to Israel’s insistence on Nigeria to accept her version of the COVID-19 vaccination.

“Also, the war in Gaza which will provide security challenges to pilgrims is another key reason.

“The purpose of pilgrimage is to invoke the spirit of God upon Nigeria and the people, and not a mere tourism,” Pam said.

On why pilgrims would be airlifted from Jos and not Abuja, he said that the decision was aimed at reducing the hardships faced by pilgrims in the past.

“The airlift of Christian pilgrims from Jos to Jordan is going to reduce the hardship being faced by pilgrims in past, who had to travel under severe risks to Abuja.

“The challenge faced by pilgrims during such operations travelling from far distances to Abuja is exposing them to dangers of insecurity and health challenges,” Pam explained.

The executive secretary thanked the Plateau Goverment for supporting the commission by ensuring its plan to move pilgrims directly from Jos to Jordan becomes a reality.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the first batch of pilgrims would be airlifted on July 24, at the Yakubu Gowon International Airport, Heipang, near Jos.
