Lampard ponders change in penalty-taker after Jorginho miss

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard admits he may seek to change penalty takers after Timo Werner’s success last night.

Jorginho has missed two of his last four spot-kicks after hitting the post with the game goalless during Wednesday night’s 4-0 win in Krasnodar.

The Italian had been substituted by the time Chelsea were awarded a second penalty and Werner dispatched with a thumping effort on 76 minutes.

Lampard insists he has no issue with Jorginho’s hop-skip technique, but he could not confirm if the midfielder will continue on penalty duty.

“Jorginho has had an incredibly successful run of scoring penalties in his career, especially at Chelsea,” said the Blues boss.

“If you take that many penalties, as he does, there can be periods when you miss one or two, I’ve experienced that as a player. I’ve got no problem at all with his style of taking them because of the success he’s had.

“But I know Timo Werner is very capable of taking penalties, as we saw. We have other players that can too. So I will talk to the players to see how we move forward, but we have very good penalty takers at the club.”

  • Chelsea wants replacement signed before releasing Jorginho to Arsenal

Chelsea wants replacement signed before releasing Jorginho to Arsenal

Chelsea want a replacement signed before releasing Jorginho on-loan to Arsenal.

ESPN says Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is desperate to sign Chelsea midfielder Jorginho.

The Gunners look to have missed out on long-term target Houssem Aouar, with Lyon chiefs declaring that none of their players will leave before Monday’s transfer deadline.

It means that Arteta has turned his attention to the Italian international, who could be sold by Chelsea following their £250 million outlay on transfers over the summer.

The Gunners are eager to bring Jorginho to Arsenal in a loan deal, with the Blues hoping to bring in another midfielder before they sanction any possible move.

  • Chelsea director to meet with Juve over Jorginho swap deal

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia is set to meet with Juventus over a potential swap deal involving Jorginho.

With football’s economy impacted by the coronavirus, swap deals might become the norm this summer.

Juve boss Maurizio Sarri desperately wants a reunion with Italy international Jorginho, who he managed at Napoli and Chelsea.

Calciomercato says the Old Lady would be willing to offer Federico Bernardeschi in exchange for the holding midfielder.

Juve currently value Jorginho at around £35m and feel Bernardeschi has a similar value.

Granovskaia is set to speak with Juventus sporting director Fabio Paratici about the potential deal this week.

  • Transfer: Juventus, Chelsea in swap talks for Jorginho

Juventus and Chelsea are in swap talks over a deal for Jorginho.

Juve are targeting the former Napoli midfielder on recommendation of Maurizio Sarri, who worked with Jorginho at both the Azzurri and Chelsea.

The Guardian says Juve are offering Miralem Pjanic to Chelsea in exchange for Jorginho.

Pjanic, 30, will leave Juve this summer and is also a target for Barcelona.

Like Pjanic, Jorginho has a contract until mid-2023.

UCL: Bayern taught Chelsea a lesson – Jorginho

Jorginho admits that Chelsea were taught a lesson by Bayern Munich in their 3-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge which leaves the Blues with a mountain to climb to reach the Champions League quarter-finals.

Serge Gnabry scored the first two goals early in the second half and Robert Lewandowski added a third before Marcos Alonso was sent off late on to cap a miserable night for the Blues.

Frank Lampard’s side were thoroughly outclassed in the first leg of the last-16 tie and Jorginho acknowledged that Bayern are serious contenders to win the Champions League outright.

“It is very difficult to say anything right now because it was a difficult game and we just saw a big team,” Jorginho told reporters at Stamford Bridge. “So, we know we have a lot to improve and they showed so many things to us that we can learn from our mistakes and from them as well.

“They were really, really good and we couldn’t press very well. I think we were not compact on the pitch and not pressing as a team. So that made them confident with the ball and they could play easily.

“At this level, if you concede a chance, they can kill you and when you create you have to score, even if you are playing worse than the other team because then things can change.

“We had a big team against us. I think they are playing to win the Champions League, honestly, because they are confident on the ball, tactically they are very good. The result tells you everything.”

  • EPL: Jorginho vows to silent Chelsea boo boys

Under-fire Chelsea midfielder Jorginho believes that he can change the minds of fans who boo him.

Despite impressing whilst at the Serie A runners-up last season, Jorginho has struggled to earn similar plaudits at Stamford Bridge.

However, with Chelsea floundering in sixth place, the midfielder has become a scapegoat for the west London side’s current direction.

The midfielder has responded to the criticism and recognised the fans right to voice their opinion.

He said: “The important thing is to know how to deal with the situation.

“And the fan has the right to charge.

“I was calm and I’m sure I can show my value and make them change their minds.”

Jorginho has yet to register an assist this season – a stat that is held against him given his creative role within the team.

The Italian became the first player in Premier League history to make 2,300 passes without assisting a goal.

Jorginho also missed the opening penalty in his side’s shoot-out loss to City in the Carabao Cup final last weekend.

They travel to local rivals Fulham on Sunday afternoon and will look to close the gap on the top four.

Jorginho is widely expected to retain his role in the middle of the pitch – only Kante and captain Cesar Azpilicueta have more league appearances this season.

  • Chelsea fans boo Jorginho despite win over Malmo

Chelsea fans continued to boo Jorginho throughout the club’s 3-0 Europa League second-leg win over Malmo on Thursday night at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues cruised to a 5-1 aggregate victory over the Swedish side to advance to the last 16 of the Europa League courtesy of goals from Olivier Giroud, Ross Barkley and Callum Hudson-Odoi.

However, the win wasn’t enough to calm supporters as pressure continues to mount on manager Maurizio Sarri as his main summer signing continues to struggle influence games.

The midfielder joined the London club back in July from Napoli for a £57m (€65m/$86m) with the idea that the 27-year-old would become the main playmaker for the “Sarri-ball” style of football.

This has struggled to work to it’s full potential this season, with pressure only increasing on the Chelsea manager following embarrasing defeats to both Manchester City and Bournemouth.

And despite the club’s victory over Malmo, fans again opted to show their frustration at the style of football which revolves primarily around Jorginho.

  • Sarri defends Jorginho, says Kante can’t play central role

Sarri defends Jorginho, says Kante can’t play central role

Maurizio Sarri has ruled out the possibility of altering the roles of N’Golo Kante and Jorginho, despite criticism of his tactics after Chelsea’s defeat at Tottenham.

The Blues were overrun by Spurs in their 3-1 loss at Wembley, leading to suggestions Sarri should move Kante to the deeper central position in his midfield three.

Kante is regarded as one of the leading defensive midfielders, winning the World Cup and two Premier League titles in the last three seasons, but Sarri says he does not have the skillset to play the holding role in his system.

The manager explained: “I want to play a central midfielder who is a very technical player, so for me, the central midfielder is Jorginho or (Cesc) Fabregas. I don’t want Kante in this position.

“Kante, in the last match, wanted to solve the match after the first 15 minutes, but in the wrong way. He lost the position, he attacked too much.

“This one is not one of the best characteristics of Kante, but it was only in reaction to the difficulties.

“Maybe it’s only a question of time, but Kante has to stay near to Jorginho, especially when the ball is on the other side. When the ball is on the left he has to stay very close to Jorginho.”

  • Jorginho, Kante score in Chelsea win over Huddersfield

Jorginho, Kante score in Chelsea win over Huddersfield

Jorginho marked his Premier League debut with a goal as Chelsea kicked off their campaign with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Huddersfield Town at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Italy international Jorginho passed home a fearless penalty in the 45th minute as Maurizio Sarri earned his first competitive win at the helm after his team went down to Manchester City in the Community Shield last weekend, while fellow debutant and the world’s most expensive goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga started with a clean sheet.

Jorginho, who followed Sarri’s path from Napoli for a reported £50million, added to the opener from World Cup-winning midfielder N’Golo Kante, who returned as one of three changes to the team that lost to City.

Huddersfield struggled to test the Kepa his first outing since joining from Athletic Bilbao for £72m as Chelsea dominated the second period, with Pedro adding the gloss after a brilliant counter-attack launched by substitute Eden Hazard.

Chelsea were lacking dynamism and conviction as Huddersfield sat deep and proved difficult to break down, but Pedro’s driving run and pass out to Willian enabled the Brazilian to pick out Kante, who scuffed a left-footed volley into the ground and inside the far post in the 34th minute.

Huddersfield were a persistent threat from crosses into the box and they went close to an equaliser when Steve Mounie headed Mathias Jorgensen’s flick-on against the inside of the upright.

But Chelsea again punctuated a strong spell for the hosts with a goal, Jorginho sitting debutant Ben Hamer down with a skip in his run-up for an incredibly cool spot-kick after Christopher Schindler caught Marcos Alonso at the end of a neat move from the Blues.

The Blues were the sole aggressors in the second half and, after Hamer parried a header from Antonio Rudiger behind, Alonso sent an acrobatic effort against the crossbar in the 58th minute.

Hazard came on for Willian for just his second outing since the World Cup and poked a pass through the legs of Terence Kongolo for Pedro to lift Chelsea’s third beyond Hamer and round off a routine win.

  • I’ll bring something new to Premier League – Jorginho

New Chelsea midfielder Jorginho believes he can offer something never seen before in the Premier League under the guidance of Maurizio Sarri.

Blues manager Sarri and his squad, along with new assistant first-team coach Gianfranco Zola, landed in Australia on Thursday ahead of Chelsea’s pre-season match against Perth Glory.

The signing of midfielder Jorginho on a five-year contract from Napoli, for an initial fee of around £50m, sees the Brazil-born Italian swiftly reunite with Sarri.

Jorginho is confident both he and Sarri can make an impact in their first campaigns in English football.

“Today everyone watches the Premier League so I have watched plenty of it in my time. It is a fantastic league, the best in the world I think,” Jorginho said on the Chelsea website.

“Perhaps my style of play is not something that is seen in England, I really hope that it is a good fit for the game over here and I will certainly be doing everything I can to make sure it works out.

“I like playing just outside of my own penalty box, the player who receives the ball and organises the game.”

Jorginho added: “Since I was little I was someone who always enjoyed challenges and for me this is just a huge challenge, professionally and personally.

During a press conference at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday, Sarri spoke of his desire to tackle a “difficult challenge, but a fascinating one”.

Jorginho has no doubts about what qualities the former Napoli boss can bring to the club.

“He is someone who does wonderful work, he is right on top of everything that is going on on the pitch,” said the Italy midfielder, who was also on Manchester City’s radar.

“When the weekend comes around and you have a game, you start that game knowing how every situation is going to pan out on the field offensively and defensively, and that is something that really helps you in your work.

“He is a very straightforward person, he is easy to communicate with, he is very approachable and that is something that also helps the players.”
