    Jos residents lament biting cold, spend more hours indoors

    Residents of Jos are lamenting the prevailing biting cold that has befallen the city, saying the weather condition is disrupting their routine activities.

    News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that temperature in the town has dropped to an average of 11 degrees Celsius in the evening, but rises to about 19 degrees in the afternoon.

    Some of the residents complained that the cold weather had disrupted their routine activities as they spent longer hours indoors.

    Mr John Emeka, a student, said it was difficult for him getting out of bed and preparing for his outings.

    “As you can see , I am wearing a sweater and a very thick jacket and also tying a scarf on my head , hand gloves and socks to keep myself warm, having stayed indoors for many hours, ‘’ Emeka said.

    Similarly, Mrs Annette Akpan, said she resorted to wearing “cold breakers” to shield herself from the adverse weather and advised fellow residents to do likewise so as not to break down.

    Mrs Ngozi Peters, a trader at Terminus market, said the inclement weather had compelled her to open her shop late in the morning.

    “This cold is too severe and that is why I stay indoors for many hours before setting out to the market; my health first before any other thing,” Peters said.

    NAN reports that the cold weather had pushed prices of second hand sweaters and jackets with the materials selling for between N2000 and N2500, as against N500 and N600, respectively.

    Fans slam Davido for failing to show up at Jos concert

    Angry fans of Davido have taken to their respective social media handles to rain curses on the pop star for failing to show up at a concert in Jos, Plateau state.

    In the video, the angry mob were seen in groups, throwing stones at the supposed venue of the event.

    TheNewsGuru recalls that on Friday, the singer had announced via his social media page that he would be performing across various states over the weekend including Jos.

    “Set Awon no Set !!!! ENUGU ASABA JOS THIS WEEKEND !!! Peep the new paint Job on the jet,” he had written on Twitter.

    But his fans in Jos, who had enthusiastically anticipated his presence, were saddened not to have him around.

    In an apparent show of their grievances, they went haywire, bombarding the supposed venue for the concert with stones.

    In the video, some of them were heard, laying curses on the singer for disappointing them: “Davido you f**k up, Davido God punish you see wetin you cause.”

    “Davido is not here,” some were seen trying to make mockery of the singer’s absence as they watch others hurling objects at a building.

    Police confirm collapse of two-storey building in Jos

    The Plateau Police Command on Sunday confirmed the collapse of a two-storey building at Butcher Street, Terminus Market in Jos North Local Government Area of the state.

    DSP Terna Tyopev, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jos that the incident occurred Sunday afternoon.

    Tyopev, however, said that neither was any life lost in the incident nor any casualty recorded.

    He said officers and men of the command had condoned off the affected area and investigations into the cause of disaster had commenced.

    He said the action became necessary in order to also prevent hoodlums from taking advantage of the situation to loot.

    The Plateau State Emergency Management (SEMA) said seven people had died and one other was critically injured during Monday’s building collapse in Jos.
    The News Agency f Nigeria (NAN) reports that the two-storey building located at Butcher Lane in Jos North Local Government Area of the state belonging to one Alhaji Rufai Kabiru collapsed on Monday evening.
    Mrs Junni Bala, SEMA Director of Search and Rescue, who confirmed the casualty figure to NAN on Tuesday in Jos said the figure may increase.
    “That was the figure as at last night.
    “The figure may increase today because we are continuing with the search and rescue operation this morning,” she said.
    However, DSP Terna Tyopev, Plateau Police Command Spokesperson, told NAN that the command had so far recorded three deaths and three injured persons.
    Tyopev said that the injured persons were rescued with various degrees of injury and had been rushed to the Plateau Specialist Hospital and Bingham University Teaching Hospitals,Jos, for treatment.
    He, however, said that the casualty may increase as some people may still be trapped in the rubbles.
    “The rescue operation is ongoing and there is likelihood that the casualty figure will increase,” he said.

    Police confirm three dead, seven injured in Jos building collapse

    The Plateau Police Command has confirmed the death of three persons with seven severely injured from the collapse of a two-storey building at Dilimi community of Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau.
    DSP Terna Tyopev, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Command, confirmed the casualties to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Jos
    Tyopev, who did not state the cause of the collapse, however said that the structure, located at Butcher Line in the area, is owned by Alhaji Rufai Kabiru.
    “This evening, at about 5 p.m. we received a distress call that a two-storey building located at Butcher Line in Jos North has collapsed.
    “A search and rescue team was immediately mobilised to the scene.
    “Seven persons were rescued unhurt, three persons were rescued with various degree of injuries while three persons lost their lives,” he said.
    The PPRO said the injured were currently receiving treatment at the Plateau Specialist Hospital and Bingham University Teaching Hospital, respectively.
    He said search and rescue operation was still ongoing at the scene, adding that security personnel have cordoned the vicinity.

    Nollywood movie director dies while shooting film in Jos

    President of Directors’ Guild of Nigeria (DGN), Mr Fred Amata, on Friday, confirmed the death of Nollywood filmmaker, Ifeanyi Onyeabo, saying he died while shooting a movie in Jos.

    Amata said in Lagos that Onyeabo’s death was shocking and unbelievable, and had left him pondering on what may have gone wrong, NAN reports.

    He, however, could not say the cause of the incident, saying “we are still trying to ascertain what went wrong while at the venue of the film shooting.

    We do not have the details yet, until we reach the hospital to ascertain the cause of his death.

    He will be greatly missed by the entertainment industry.

    Pedro Aganbi, former chairman, Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Lagos chapter, said that Nollywood had lost an icon who had contributed to the development of the entertainment industry.

    Ifeanyi has been there from the very beginning of Nollywood and he has been a major contributor to the development of the entertainment industry.

    It is a fall of another ‘Iroko’ and we will surely miss him,” Aganbi said.

    Judge apologises to lawyers over poor toilet facility in Jos High Court

    Justice Daniel Longji of a Jos State High Court on Thursday apologized to lawyers over lack of functional toilet facilities it the Jos High Court premise.

    The Judge, apologised to Mr Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), the EFCC Prosecuting Counsel in Sen. Jonah Jang’s N6.3 billion fraud case, pleaded with the Bar to help the Judiciary in the mess it has found itself in.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Jang case was on when the judge suggested a 20 minutes stand down to enable people who want to visit the restrooms to do so.

    Jacobs had agreed with the judge but Longji, told him there were no functional restrooms in the court premises.

    “I have to apologise to you over the none availability of a functional toilet facility in the whole of this High Court premises. The situation here is this bad.

    “You on the Bar, must come to the assistance of the judiciary considering the situation it has found itself in this time around.

    “I can’t imagine that in the whole of this premise, there is no single functional toilet facility that could cater for the people coming here for ligations, ’’ Longji lamented.

    Responding, Chief Mike Ezekhome (SAN), Counsel to Jang, assured the Judge of the Bar’s readiness to assist in the area of raising the matter with the authorities.

    “Sir, we at the Bar are always fighting for you, particularly my very self, I will not stop fighting for the judiciary. For a whole High Court like this to be without a functional toilet facility is very unfortunate.

    “We shall as lawyers take this matter serious to stop the embarrassment and the inconveniences being caused litigants that troop in here for one thing or the other, ’’ Ezekhome assured.

    “I done a lot of write ups and carried out some crusades in my fights for the judiciary. This situation the judge talked about is very unfortunate and uncalled for.’’

    NAN’s findings revealed that virtually all the toilets, lacked running water and can’t be used by anybody. (NAN)

    Speaking to NAN, the Registrar of the Court, Mr Geoffrey Kamyal, said: “we renovated some of the toilets. Another challenge is lack of running water.

    “We are using well water at the High Court premises now.

    “Just as the Judge pointed out, most time it’s the Nigeria Bar Association that fight for the Judiciary for some things to be put right in the Judiciary.

    “Our challenge is that our monthly subventions hardly comes as expected, which usually hinders us from putting somethings right for the good of the people coming around the High Court, ’’ Kamyal explained.

    Insecurity: FG, security agents advise Prince Charles, wife to cancel Jos trip – Report

    UK’s Prince Charles, who is in Nigeria on the final leg of his West African tour, alongside his wife, Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, has cancelled a planned trip to Jos, citing security concerns.

    Prince Charles had earlier scheduled a trip to Jos on the final day of his royal tour of West Africa, to undertake engagements including a discussion about peacebuilding and conflict resolution, but he would not be going based on the advice of the Foreign Office, reports UK Telegraph.

    Telegraph quoted a spokesman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office as saying that the decision was made “upon advice from the Nigerian government and others involved in security and operational aspects of the visit”.

    A source added there were no known specific threats to the Prince’s safety, with “additional security precautions relating to recent clashes”.

    The Prince is understood to be disappointed he is unable to make the trip, which had been planned for some time.

    Events arranged in Jos will now be moved to Abuja, to allow him to speak to people about their rural livelihoods and attend a service of commemoration.

    He will also take part in an hour-long discussion about “peace-building and conflict resolution”.

    A spokesman for the Foreign Office said: “Due to operational constraints beyond our control, we have decided at this time not to include Jos during Their Royal Highnesses visit to Nigeria.

    We are delighted to have an exciting programme of activity in Abuja and Lagos which will showcase those issues close to The Prince’s and The Duchess’s hearts.

    The decision was taken upon advice from the Nigerian Government and others involved in security and operational aspects of the visit.

    We’ve arranged an interesting and engaging programme on Thursday in Abuja, which will include showcasing alternative livelihoods focussing on poultry and Acha super grain, water aid and a peacebuilding discussion with youth peace ambassadors.”

    The inability of Prince Charles to visit Jos may not be unconnected to the discovery of the body of retired Major General Idris Alkali, who was murdered in Plateau State, while on his way to Bauchi State.

    His body was recovered on Friday and buried on Saturday.

    19 suspects have so far been apprehended in relation to his murder.

    Gen. Alkali: Police parade 19 suspects in Jos

    The Plateau Police Command has paraded 19 suspects in connection with the disappearance and death of Maj. Gen. Idris Alkali (rtd).

    DSP Terna Tyopev, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the State Police Command presented the suspects to journalists on Sunday in Jos.

    Alkali was declared missing on Sept. 3. He had left Abuja and was on his way to Bauchi, via Jos. He never reached his destination.

    On Sept. 29, his car and other personal effects were found in a pond in Dura-Du community of Jos South Local Government Area of the state.

    On October 31, the body of Alkali was found in an abandoned Well at Gushwet in Shen community of Jos South LGA and was buried by the military on Nov. 3 in Abuja.

    According to Tyopev, the 19 suspects paraded include the 13 earlier handed over to the police command by the military, while the remaining six were among the eight the police declared wanted in connection with the crime.

    He said two among the eight suspects declared wanted are still at large.

    “On Oct. 17, the military handed over 13 suspects to us in connection with the disappearance and death of Maj. Gen. Idris Alkali (rtd).

    “After a painstaking interrogation on Oct. 21 we also declared eight suspects wanted. Six out of the eight reported themselves to the police, but two are at large.

    “So, the 19 suspects paraded today consist of the 13 handed over to us, and the six that reported themselves to us, ” he said.

    The PPRO said the suspects were interrogated and found to have strong links with the crime, adding that they would be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.

    He said efforts are being intensified to ensure the two remaining suspects are arrested.

    Unidentified gunmen killed one Abdullahi S., a soldier attached to the Operation Safe Haven, a military Tasksforce maintaining peace in Plateau.
    DSP Terna Tyopev, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Plateau Police Command confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Jos.
    Tyopev said one Hafsat Gambo, a 21-year old girl was also abducted in the course of the incident at Corner Soja community of Jos North Local government area of the state.
    “Yesterday, at about 9.p.m, one Alhaji Idris Gambo of Corner Soja community of Jos North reported at our Laranto Division that at about 7.p.m, some unknown gunmen went to his house in a Golf vehicle and forcefully took his daughter Hafsat Gambo, 21, to an unknown destination.
    “Our men immediately mobilised to the scene of crime. On arrival, we discovered that in the bid to escape, the gunmen shot and fatally injured Lance Cpl. Abdullahi S, a soldier attached to the military taskforce
    “We immediately rushed him to Bingham University Teaching Hospital, Jos, but was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty,” he said.
    The PPRO said that the body of the deceased has been deposited at the hospital’s mortuary.
    He said investigation to unravel those behind the crime was ongoing.
    Tyopev called on members of the public with useful information on the crime to make it available to the police.
