Mourinho strengthens squad with £27m Dutch forward

Tottenham Hotspur have signed Netherlands forward Steven Bergwijn for £27m from PSV Eindhoven on a contract that will run until 2025.

Bergwijn, 22, has played 16 times for PSV in the Dutch Eredivisie this season, scoring five goals.

He bolsters Spurs boss Jose Mourinho’s options in attack with England striker Harry Kane out with a long-term hamstring injury.

Bergwijn came through the PSV ranks and made his first-team debut at 17.

He scored 31 goals in 149 appearances for the Dutch club and won three league titles.

The forward has also earned nine caps for the Dutch national side.

“I think it is an amazing move, an amazing club,” Bergwijn told Tottenham’s club website.

“When I was a young boy I looked up to the coach, of course Mourinho, and now I play for him.

“You have to believe in yourself and I know what I can bring to this club and this team – I am good with the ball and I can score.

“They play good football and that is what I like, to play here is a dream for me. It is an honour.”

  • Eriksen close to Inter move despite Mourinho, Conte feud

Christian Eriksen is close to sealing a £16.8m move from Tottenham to Inter Milan that could see him earn up to £320,000 per week, according to Sky in Italy.

Spurs have been keen to sell the Danish midfielder this month to prevent him leaving on a free transfer when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Antonio Conte wants to add him to his Inter squad and, while sources in England understand the deal has not yet been signed, those in Italy believe it is close to being agreed.

Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho reignited his feud with Conte after he discussed Christian Eriksen.

The two managers had a tense relationship when Mourinho was in charge of Manchester United and Conte was Chelsea boss.

It began during the 2017-18 season, reaching a peak when Mourinho said he would never be “suspended for match-fixing”, referring to Conte’s four-month ban for failing to report alleged match-fixing when he managed Juventus, having previously labelled him a “clown”.

Conte, in response, called his counterpart “a little man”.

Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho has reignited his feud with Antonio Conte after he discussed Christian Eriksen, who has been linked with Inter Milan.

The Dane will be out of contract in the summer with reports stating he is set to move to the Serie A club.

“I think Antonio. He has said publicly [about Eriksen],” Mourinho said.

“I think we coaches should all behave in the same way in relation to transfers. I think we should always be closed, until something happens.”

The Spurs boss added: “So when you ask me about player A, B or C, like when I was asked about three players, how can I speak about three players that are not my players?

“I think we should always be protective. Nothing, nothing. When I see people with responsibilities, speaking about Eriksen…

“I think we shouldn’t speak about players from other clubs until they become our players.”

Speaking to the Italian media, Inter coach Conte had said: “Eriksen? We have to go to people who have already had a career, who are at the end of their contracts.”

Spurs have not received a transfer bid for Eriksen and the midfielder will play against Watford on Saturday, according to Mourinho.

Tottenham cannot play normally without Kane – Mourinho

No player can take the injured Harry Kane’s place and Tottenham “cannot play like we normally play” without him, says manager Jose Mourinho.

He is ruled out until April with a hamstring injury that requires surgery.

England captain Kane has scored 27 goals in 31 appearances for club and country this season.

“If I speak too much about Harry, I get a bit depressed and then you are going to say ‘he is miserable’,” Mourinho said.

“It’s better to talk about things that make me laugh.”

Tottenham host Premier League leaders Liverpool on Saturday.

Kane suffered the injury during Tottenham’s defeat at Southampton on New Year’s Day and will not return to training until April.

“You know that we cannot play like we normally play when Harry Kane is in the team,” Mourinho said.

“There’s no player who can replace Harry Kane.”

Tottenham have confirmed Harry Kane will be sidelined until April and will undergo surgery to repair a ruptured tendon in his left hamstring.

“Following ongoing assessment by our medical staff over the past week, we can confirm that Harry Kane will undergo surgery to repair a ruptured tendon in his left hamstring,” said a club statement on Thursday.

“The striker suffered the injury during our Premier League fixture against Southampton last week and specialists have advised surgery after further review of the injury.

I was rude to an idiot, says Mourinho after booking

Jose Mourinho admitted he was “rude, but rude to an idiot” after he was booked for a confrontation with Southampton goalkeeping coach Andrew Sparks.

Mourinho received a yellow card from referee Mike Dean following the second-half altercation, with the Portuguese annoyed about a perceived delay and time taken to substitute match-winner Danny Ings for Michael Obafemi in the 76th minute.

Asked about the incident after the game, Mourinho said: “I think the yellow card is fair because I was rude, but I was rude to an idiot. And for some reason, I was rude, but I was and because I was I deserve the yellow card.”

A brilliant goal from Danny Ings gave Southampton a narrow but deserved win over Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham.

The Saints striker flicked the ball superbly over Toby Alderweireld before shooting past Paulo Gazzaniga for his ninth goal in his past 10 games.

Spurs were unimpressive, with Jan Vertonghen missing their best chance from close range in the first half.

Mourinho, who was booked late on, sees his team stay sixth in the table, while Southampton rise to 12th.

Spurs striker Harry Kane was forced off with a leg injury just seconds after having a goal disallowed for offside in the second half.

Shane Long went close with a header with five minutes left, but Southampton are now unbeaten in their last four outings.

  • Martial’s wife attacks Mourinho

Anthony Martial’s wife, Martial Da Cruz has criticised Tottenham Hotspur manager, Jose Mourinho for not playing her husband during his time as the head coach of Manchester United between 2016 and 2018.

According to Da Cruz, Mourinho left Martial ‘suffering’ at Old Trafford, adding that she felt trapped by the injustice of the Portuguese towards the France international.

“During our first two years together in Manchester, I experienced a very difficult period because José Mourinho did not play him [Martial] (between 2016 and 2018),’ Martial Da Cruz told L’Equipe.

“In these cases, Anthony shuts himself out. You know he’s suffering, but he doesn’t say it. I felt trapped in my sense of injustice because, as a wife, you can’t say anything (to the coach).

“We’re just watching our man go down. I was experiencing it so badly that I didn’t go to certain events so as not to meet the coach.”

Martial has been impressive for Man United under current manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The forward has scored eight goals in 15 starts for the Red Devils so far this season.
  • Guardiola set to break Mourinho’s EPL record

Manchester City head coach, Pep Guardiola, is on track to set another Premier League record, with one of Tottenham Hotspur manager, Jose Mourinho’s achievements in his sights.

Having become the first manager to win the English domestic treble with Man City last season, Guardiola is on the verge to break the record for least amount of matches required to get 100 Premier League wins tonight if his team beat Wolves at Molineux, according to Daily Mail.

Mourinho currently holds that record from his time at Chelsea, with his first 100 wins coming in only 142 league matches.

But Guardiola looks set to surpass that mark as he currently has 99 wins from 132 league games.

Even if Man City did not win at Wolves on Thursday night, Guardiola will have another eight matches in which to break Mourinho’s record.

Guardiola will also eclipse the games it took to reach 100 wins for Jurgen Klopp (159), Sir Alex Ferguson (162), Arsene Wenger (179), Rafael Benitez (181) and Claudio Ranieri (187).
