My time at Man Utd a closed chapter – Mourinho

Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho says his time at Manchester United is a ‘closed chapter’ as he prepares to take Spurs to Old Trafford on Wednesday.

Mourinho left United in December 2018 after two-and-a-half years as manager.

The Portuguese was out of work until taking over at Spurs in November, winning his first three matches.

“This is a closed chapter for me. I left the club, I took my time to process everything that happened,” Mourinho said.

“I took my time to prepare myself for the next challenge.

“Honestly, United for me is in my book of experiences, it’s in my history book.”

Mourinho left United when they were sixth in the Premier League. They are currently ninth under his successor Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but just two points behind Tottenham, who are fifth.

The 56-year-old won the League Cup, the Europa League and the Community Shield during his time at United, as well as finishing runners-up in the league in 2017-18.

“It is not for me to analyse United now,” he said. “I analyse them as an opponent, how they play. How can we beat them? How can they beat us? For me that is the important thing.

“I have a great relationship with the Manchester United supporters. I went back as a pundit and I was humbled by such a beautiful reception.

“Tomorrow I go back as the coach of the team that will try to beat Manchester United.

“I understand that what they want is the exact opposite of what I want. Of course during the match I expect them to forget me.”

EPL: Jose Mourinho eye Arsenal job

Former Manchester United boss, Jose Mourinho would be interested in Arsenal managerial job if the position becomes vacant, according to reports.

The pressure is mounting on Emery amid the controversial Granit Xhaka saga, while Arsenal have not won a league game by more than a one-goal margin all season.

With the Portuguese still out of work following his dismissal by the Red Devils last December, The Sun report that he wants to return to English football, where he would hope to guide a third different club from the same league to a trophy – something no Premier League boss has ever achieved.

Reports in earlier in the month suggested that Mourinho would consider taking over at Tottenham Hotspur if Mauricio Pochettino left his post.

Mourinho is described as an ideal candidate should a job open up at the Emirates Stadium, due to his “organisation” and “leadership”.

  • EPL: Mourinho, Solskjaer fire back at Klopp

The journey from the bench to the pundit’s studio is so quick in the modern game that some could be forgiven for thinking Manchester United had two managers after Sunday’s game.

Manchester United had a 1-1 draw with Liverpool at Old Trafford.

So, after Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp criticised Manchester United’s tactics and said their opening goal should have been ruled out for a foul, he received a surprising response.

It came not only from his Manchester United counterpart Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but also Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho was in charge of the club until he was sacked in December last year.

Klopp had made some pointed comments about the way Solskjaer set Manchester United up with a 5-3-2 formation and the way they focused on frustrating his side.

They had won all eight of their previous matches in the 2019/2020 English Premier League (EPL).

“Manchester United had momentum in the first half because they were purely there to defend against us,” said Klopp, who has yet to win at Old Trafford with Liverpool.

“Since I’m in England Manchester United always played like this,” he continued.

“I’m not the person who should be frustrated by Manchester United’s style. In the last years they just defend. That’s how it is, it’s no criticism, it’s just a fact,” he added.

“When you think Manchester United versus Liverpool, you think both teams attacking. But it’s not,” he said.

Solskjaer rejected the suggestion his team were defensive, saying they had been set up to pressure and attack.

And, he quickly received some support from his predecessor, who was more than once accused of “parking the bus” at Anfield.

Mourinho said Klopp had clearly not enjoyed the way Manchester United made the game difficult for Liverpool.

“He didn’t like the menu. He likes meat and he got fish. So, he was not happy,” said Mourinho, who noted that Solskjaer’s tactics had worked.

“They are of course much stronger against opponents who give them a chance of transitions and counter-attacks. Manchester United didn’t do that. And he didn’t like the menu.”

“They were organised. They had a plan. You can agree or disagree, but they had a game plan, they stuck to it.

“If I was Ole I would be proud, and a little bit frustrated, because I think the boys gave everything,” said Mourinho who had heard his name sung by Manchester United fans in the Stretford end.

Klopp was also upset that referee Martin Atkinson had not seen what he considered a foul by Victor Lindelof on Divock Origi

This was at the start of the move that led to Manchester United’s goal.

The German was annoyed that VAR had not overturned the goal but Solskjaer, unsurprisingly perhaps, felt the referee was correct in his verdict.

“Foul? No chance. We’re not playing basketball. He touched him, but it’s not a clear and obvious error,” he said.

Mourinho rejects Ligue 1 job, keen on Premier League return

Lyon have failed with a bid to appoint Jose Mourinho as their new manager, RMC reports.

Mourinho remains desperate to secure an imminent return to the Premier League.

The former Manchester United and Chelsea boss is waiting for the right opportunity to return to club management, after being sacked at Old Trafford last December.

Lyon president, Jean-Michel Aulas, contacted Mourinho about the vacant managerial role following the sacking of Sylvinho.

However the Portuguese made it clear that his focus is on returning to management in England, where his family currently live.

It is understood that Mourinho is reportedly eyeing the Tottenham manager’s job as speculation continues over the future of Mauricio Pochettino.

Jose Mourinho rules out Serie A return

Jose Mourinho has ruled out returning to management in Italy.

The former Inter Milan boss, who has been out of work since being sacked by Manchester United at the end of last year, has been linked with a number of Serie A jobs.

More recently, however, it has been reported he could return to Real Madrid to replace Zinedine Zidane, who has won half of all his matches in charge this season despite sitting top of La Liga.

Speaking to Italian TV show Tiki Taka, Mourinho said: “I haven’t worked for seven, eight months so we’ll see what happens.

“But I don’t think I’ll come back to work in Italy. It’s a sensation, but I don’t think my future will be in Italy.”

As Inter boss, Mourinho won a Champions League-Serie A double in 2010 – his second of two league titles while in Italy, but the president who hired him, Massimo Morratti, has since left the club.

“Inter is my home and Moratti remains both my president and friend,” Mourinho said. “When I say he, I say family. It’s as if he was my family, and I feel his family in a special way: everyone here is really special.

“My job also consists of finding the empathy I had with Inter fans. I give my all. I join a club, I take the shirt, I wear it and I live with that shirt.”

  • Hilarious Ad: It’s not easy being special – Mourinho [Video]

Jose Mourinho might still be without a club following his Manchester United sacking, but the man knows how to stay in the headlines.

In addition to recent punditry, Mourinho has also become an advertising star in a new commercial for Paddy Power.

The ad, which runs for nearly 90 seconds, sees the Portuguese manager explaining why it’s not easy being special.

“To be special you need to be consistent. I’ve been special in Milan, in Madrid, but not all great achievements get trophies,” Mourinho says while looking at a news clipping with the headline ‘United clinch second’.

The former Chelsea, Inter and Real Madrid boss goes on to say that special can’t be brought, special never brags and being special is effortless.

Despite lasting less than two minutes, the advertisement manages to pack in a number of references to Mourinho’s managerial exploits and football-related easter eggs.

In the opening shot, there’s a bust of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Russian dolls in reference to his days working under Roman Abramovich and an oil painting of him celebrating after beating the Red Devils.

While throughout there’s a reference to his infamous laundry bin stunt during a Champions League ban, a bus acting as a bookend and his dog eating from a bowl marked ‘Didier’.

All in all, it’s a pretty smart ad and continues Mourinho’s recent media charm offensive as he looks to find his next managerial job.

Mourinho says Man Utd sack deserved, club yet to improve

Jose Mourinho has admitted he deserved to be sacked by Manchester United but insists the club is yet to to improve in his absence.

The Portuguese was sacked by United last year December and was replaced by former Red Devils’ player, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as a caretaker manager before confirmed on permanent basis.

“I was sacked, I probably deserved to be sacked because I was responsible as the manager, but the sad reality is that they are worse than before,” Mourinho said on Sky Sports.

“And for me that is a sad thing. Maybe people think I’m enjoying the situation but I’m not enjoying it at all.

“I think they are going to really, really be in trouble to get not just into the top four but potentially in the top six. I think this team is worse than the team of last season.”

Jose Mourinho rejects lucrative contract offer

Former Manchester United and Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has rejected a lucrative offer to manage in China.

Mourinho had reportedly been approached by Chinese Super League side Guangzhou Evergrande with a contract offer worth £88m.
It would have made him the world’s best-paid manager but Mourinho wanted to stay in Europe with his family.
Mourinho has been out of work since he was sacked by Manchester United last December.
Guangzhou are currently managed by Italian World Cup winner Fabio Cannavaro.
Mourinho said in March that he wants to return to management this year, but is waiting for the right project.
“I know exactly what I don’t want,” he said.
“I know what I want, in terms of not the specific club but the nature of the job, the dimension of the job.”

  • I prefer international management – Mourinho

Jose Mourinho says he is open to returning to the game as a manager of a national team rather than a club.

The Portuguese has been out of management since being sacked by Manchester United in December after overseeing the club’s worst start to a campaign in 28 years.

When asked about his next challenge, Mourinho said he would welcome the opportunity to manage at international level and revealed it would not necessarily have to be with Portugal.

“I want to compete in new competitions,” the 56-year-old told Eleven Sports. “I think about the World Cup and the European Championships.

“For a long time I have had the desire to try out such an adventure. Right now, I see myself more at a national team than with a new club.

“Is Portugal the right team for me? Not necessarily.”

EPL: I only spoke to Mourinho twice at Chelsea – De Bruyne

Belgium midfielder Kevin De Bruyne says he only spoke to former manager Jose Mourinho twice during his time at Chelsea.

De Bruyne, now at Manchester City, made only three Premier League appearances in two years at Chelsea, spending a season on loan at Werder Bremen.

He left for Wolfsburg in January 2014 before moving to City in 2015.

“There was so much in the press about my relationship with Jose Mourinho,” De Bruyne, 27, told the Players’ Tribune.

“But the truth is that I only ever spoke to him twice. The plan was always for me to go on loan for a bit.”

De Bruyne scored 10 goals in 33 Bundesliga appearances for Werder Bremen before returning to Stamford Bridge, when the then Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp – now in charge of City’s title rivals Liverpool – wanted to sign him.

De Bruyne said: “Mourinho texted me, ‘You are staying. I want you to be part of this team’.

“So I thought, OK, great. I’m in his plans.”
