See reasons Portugal crushed Super Eagles – coach Jose Peseiro

Super Eagles gaffer, Jose Peseiro has stated reasons his team got thrashed by Portugal in an international friendly game held in Lisbon.

Peseiro noted that Portugal played the game with their best team last night.

The Super Eagles were no match for the Euro 2016 winners and conceded two quick second half goals in the encounter.

Portugal’s midfielder Bruno Fernandes tapped a low pass inside nine minute and scored from the penalty spot to put scores at 2-0 in first half.

Upon resumption in the second half, Nigeria had a chance to score a goal but Emmanuel Dennis missed from the penalty spot .

Super Eagles then conceded two quick goals when Gonçalo Ramos scored in the 82nd minute to put scores at 3-0 before João Mário finished it up in the 84th minute to complete the rout.

“We have to improve and improve a lot. It was a first half below what we expected, the second was much better,” Peseiro told A Bola.

“Portugal was better, they are superior, they have a great selection, but the scoreline is heavy and exaggerated because we could have made it 2-1 and then we suffered 0-3 and 0-4. We cannot concede four goals and some of them the way they were.”

It appears the Super Eagles have played their last match of the year and will look forward to playing in the AFCON qualifiers in March 2023.

NFF: We have no issues with Coach José Peseiro

The General Secretary of the Nigeria Football Federation, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi has decried the speculations, innuendoes, and outright falsehoods over the relationship between NFF and Head Coach of the Super Eagles, Mr. José Santos Peseiro.

There has been a considerable media frenzy over the past few days regarding Mr. Peseiro and the NFF, with a section of the media speculating that the football –governing body had gone ahead to empanel an interim coaching crew to do the job of Mr. Peseiro in the event of a relationship breakdown.

“Most of these speculations and innuendoes are simply ridiculous because we have no problem whatsoever with Mr. Peseiro. He is doing his job as Head Coach of the Super Eagles and, contrary to some of the more fictitious claims, he has not reported the NFF to FIFA with regards to his wages.

“I want to appeal to the media to make efforts to get their facts right before going to press. There is no need to speculate and engage in half-truths and outright falsehood in these matters. Some of these speculations and innuendoes create disharmony and disenchantment in key quarters. The NFF and the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development are working on Mr. Peseiro’s wages and these will be settled shortly.”

Sanusi stated that Peseiro has been doing his work without entertaining any distractions, and has even compiled his list of players for the upcoming international friendly game with Portugal in Lisbon on 17th November.

“We have a friendly match against Portugal coming up in Lisbon on Thursday, 17th November. Mr. Peseiro has compiled a provisional list and is only waiting for this weekend’s matches to submit his list of 23 players.

“We have a cordial relationship with the Head Coach. He is doing his job and focused on his objectives. The media should desist from reports and speculations that are aimed at causing discontentment and disenchantment among the Ministry of Sports, NFF, and Mr. Peseiro, as all parties are working in harmony.”

The statement also said that Nigeria’s delegation to Monday’s 2023 AFCON qualifying match against ‘The Falcons and True Parrots’ of São Tomé and Príncipe landed in the southern Moroccan city of Agadir on Sunday.

“The Air Peace airline’s Embraer 195 E2 which has flown the team to a number of match venues including from Morocco when they defeated Liberia in a FIFA World Cup qualifying match in Tangier, touched down at the Aeroport Agadir Almarissa.

“It landed at exactly 8.15 a.m. on Sunday, with a total of 25 players and technical and administrative crew.

“The delegation was led by NFF 2nd Vice President, Shehu Dikko and also included the General Secretary, Mohammed Sanusi, a number of board members, a couple of NFF Management and Staff, a few stakeholders and some media representatives,” it said.

Finidi gives home-based players hope to play for Nigeria

Super Eagles new first assistant coach, Finidi George, has revealed that the new technical crew, led by Jose Peseiro, will give more home-based players the opportunity to challenge for shirts in the senior national team.

Finidi, a former Ajax and Ipswich town star, described Nigeria’s forthcoming international friendlies against Mexico and Ecuador as good introductory games for Peseiro.

He assured all Nigerian footballers that everybody qualified to play for the country will get the chance to stake his claim to the team, advised the home-based stars to focus on improving their game.

Nigeria will meet Mexico and Ecuador in two U.S. cities on May 28 and June 2 respectively.

Speaking on plans for the games, which come after Nigeria’s failure to qualify for Qatar 2023 World Cup, Finidi said the process of building a new team wouldn’t have been made easier than with two games against two already established sides preparing for the Copa Mundial.

He added that the games would present Peseiro an opportunity to assess the players available for selection ahead of the Cote d’Ivoire 2023 Africa Cup Of Nations qualifier against Sierra Leone next month.

Expressing delight at being given the opportunity to contribute to Super Eagles’ resuscitation after the failure to qualify for the World Cup, Finidi acknowledged that the task ahead for the Peseiro-led technical crew is enormous, adding, however, that with adequate support from all stakeholders, Nigerians will see an indomitable team.

He assured all the players invited to the national team camp of equal opportunity to fight for shirts in the emerging team, adding that the Super Eagles would soon return to their old glory.

“The friendlies would be used to assess players and work out modalities to transform the Super Eagles to the level it belongs. Because Peseiro is new with the Eagles, we, the assistants, have resolved to guide him where necessary and make him comfortable in the terrain when he arrives in Nigeria.”

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that Finidi still maintains his job at Enyimba.

According to the former Ajax and Ipswich town star, the two roles would not clash because they are well defined.

“Working with Enyimba has opened my eyes to the workings of the local league. Now, we will create more opportunities for NPFL players and ensure that only the best available Nigerians, no matter where they are based, get the chance to play for Nigeria.”

On alleged interference in team selection by Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) officials, Finidi said: “I have not worked with the Super Eagles before, so, I don’t know if such exists. My mission now is to give my best to the national assignment given to me by the NFF. This is another opportunity for me to work for my country after retirement from playing for the Super Eagles years ago,” he said.

BREAKING: NFF appoints new Super Eagles coach, Jose Peseiro

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has appointed Portuguese tactician, Jose Peseiro as the new coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports this was disclosed in a communique issued after a virtual NFF executive committee meeting on Wednesday.

Part of the Communique reads, “After careful consideration of a memo presented by Chairman of the Technical and Development Sub-Committee, the Executive Committee endorsed a proposal for the appointment of Mr Jose Peseiro as the new Head Coach of the Super Eagles, following the end to the relationship with Mr Gernot Rohr. However, the Committee resolved that Mr Augustine Eguavoen, named the interim Head Coach, will lead the Super Eagles to the AFCON 2021 in Cameroon with Mr Peseiro only playing the role of Observer. It was unanimously agreed that the AFCON is a good avenue for Mr Peseiro to launch a working relationship with Mr Eguavoen, who will revert to his role as Technical Director (hence Mr Peseiro’s immediate boss) after the AFCON.

“The Executive Committee mandated the Technical and Development Committee as well as the NFF Secretariat to organise a friendly match for the Super Eagles when the team arrives in Garoua for the AFCON 2021, and also to arrange matches for the Super Eagles and the Super Falcons in upcoming FIFA windows for international friendlies.

“The Executive Committee approved the Financial Statement of the Federation for the year 2021, as well as the proposed Budget of the sum of N13,089,022,180.00 for the year 2022.”
