Josh2funny explained that the nature of the character led to uncomfortable situations.

“You see, the difference between me and some other people who do female characters is that my own was straight comedy. Anybody who saw me and liked me didn’t really have sense, didn’t really know where it was going because I made sure it was stupid,” he said.

He recounted an incident with a fan, saying, “Mama Felicia is a stupid character, it was straight stupid. I had a lot of advances. One guy came to my WhatsApp and said he really liked me. I went straight to him and said, ‘Bro, I’m going to pray, and you’re going to be blind in two weeks’ the guy began to beg me. Why would you see me and like me?”

The skit maker said the experiences led him to retire the Mama Felicia character and introduce Brother Zacchaeus.

  • Skit makers weren’t paid for visiting Osinbajo – Josh2Funny

Skit makers weren’t paid for visiting Osinbajo – Josh2Funny

Social media comedian and singer, Josh Alfred, popularly known as Josh2Funny, has stated that no skit maker was paid to visit Vice President Yemi Osinbajo during the week. The visit to the Presidential villa in Abuja was part of activities for the Nigeria Skits Industry Awards, organised by a former member of the House of Representatives, Bimbo Daramola. However, the skit makers were called out online by some young Nigerians who accused them of sabotaging the youths by going on such visit.

Josh2funny said, “Not a dime was received by anyone among us for visiting the Vice President. We only took a walk around the Villa and talked to Prof Yemi Osinbajo and other representatives at the meeting about the problems bedevilling Nigerian youths. We discussed the need for the government to do something worthwhile about the issue of police brutality, the deteriorating state of the educational system, and for permanent voter cards to be made available to all eligible voters. One of us, Taaooma, specifically took a lot of time to discuss the issue of police brutality, which affects the youth, while another skit maker, Mr Hyenana, talked about the need for improvement in the educational sector, especially at elementary and secondary levels.

“We were called upon by the Nigerian Skits Industry Awards to pay a visit to the Vice President in an effort by the organisers to help us get due recognition, just like it is obtainable in the movie and music industries. Having a meeting at such level means so much for the industry, and that was why I deemed it very important to be part of the visit. However, there is no association of skit makers in Nigeria. Actually, Nigerian skit makers are underrated and not respected because some people have tagged us ‘internet sensationalists’. The event was about changing that narrative and giving kudos to whom it is due. We work very hard to produce content, yet we are called ‘Internet sensationalists’ or ‘social media influencers’, when in fact, our art is beyond that. Some of us are comedians and some are actors. We should be referred to as ‘comedians’ or ‘online comedians”, he told Punch.

  • Why some people think I am gay- Josh2funny

Chibuike Josh Alfred, aka Josh 2 Funny is one comedian who reigns supreme on social media. The entertainer is known for fusing humour into his jokes which he often call hymns.

Armed with 221,000 followers on Instagram , the comedian who puts on female attires whenever he wants to shoot his skits has said some people think he is gay.

“I don’t dress like a woman; I only put on female attire to record my videos because I play the typical Igbo woman. Dressing like a woman makes the jokes funnier and people are able to relate with it. In real-life, I’m a full-blooded man and I like women. Yes. Some people think that I’m gay because I wear female clothing. But I’m still letting people know that this is just comedy. Even when I perform on stage, I wear men’s clothing. I usually give an example of Tyler Perry, who has been acting as Madea, a woman, for a long time and it doesn’t mean he is homosexual”.

Josh also recounted how a homosexual wooed him. According to him:”Yes. There was a time a guy sent me a message on social media and was asking if I like men. I told him that if he sent me any more messages, I would pray and he would go blind. The guy ran away after that”.

  • Special Report: How Nigerian social media comedians are ousting established ones

Whether you believe it or not, there is a disruption ongoing in the Nigerian comedy industry at the moment. This disruption is creating a new set of comedy talents hitherto where struggling for fame and fortune.

Wikipedia defines Disruptive innovation as an innovation that creates a new market and value network and eventually disrupts an existing market and value network, displacing established market leading firms, products, and alliances. The term was defined and first analyzed by the American scholar Clayton M. Christensen and his collaborators beginning in 1995.

Years back, to be called a bonafide star in the comedy industry, you ought to have performed in shows like Nite of a 1000 laffs, Crack Ya Ribs, Basketmouth Uncensored and a host of others.

These days, the rule of the game has changed. A comedian who desires to remain relevant must start by maximizing social media, engaging with fans through irresistible comedy contents and remain consistent.

Before now the likes of Emmaohmygod, Arole, Josh2funny, Etinosa,Craze Clown, Oluwakaponeski and others were nothing more than youngsters who craved for stardom in the comedy industry . By deploying and virtually showing casing their craft on social media, these young Nigerians are rewriting the rules of stardom and ousting the already established comedians.

Let’s check out their social media followers and compare it to that of the already established ‘Big Boys’

As at the time of this report Craze Clown has 1.7m followers on his verified Instagram account

Koffi, a popular comedian has 35.6k followers on Instagram

Arole as the time of this report has 424,000 followers on Instagram , while an already established ‘Don’ like Julius Agwu has 287,000 followers on Instagram

Emmaohmygod as the time of this report has 369,000 followers on Instagram, while MC Abbey has 40,000 followers on Instagram

Here is the real deal, when brands are scouting for brand ambassadors comedians who have a huge social media presence and influence stand a higher chance than their already established colleagues. This is not about downplaying the contributions of these already established comedians to the growth of the industry these young folks now enjoy, this is simply a wake up call stating that the rule of the game has changed.

Speaking on how social media has changed his career, Arole said:”It has opened doors for me, I can’t deny that. It has put food on my table and that of my family as well. The greatest joy it gives me is that I make people happy. You have no idea how I feel when people stop me on the road to commend my efforts. I get clients a lot from this thing I do on social media. I anchor weddings and various events in all sectors. Churches also book for my services and they pay well. It is not just fame without money. It has given me a better chance at being called for events”.

Instagram comedian, Henry Obiefule, known as Chief Obi on social media, signed a $1 million endorsement deal with Vomoz Communications earlier this year.

“I have been endorsed as the first ever Vomoz Communications Brand Ambassador,” Chief Obi wrote in a post on his Instagram page.

“My people, hard work, focus and prayers always yield positive results! I can’t express how excited I am to have joined the @vomoz family,” he wrote.

In their article Barry titled How Platforms Will Disrupt the Future of Media and Entertainment , Libert, Megan Beck and Jerry (Yoram) Wind says:” For today’s social and video networks, the human network — you and me — is changing the entire business models of publishers, TV and radio broadcasters and even cable TV companies as well as content providers in entertainment, news and sports. The real question, then, is not whether broadcasters, advertisers and content providers will be disrupted by the power of us and what we produce and distribute — but how quickly?

“To put this in context, more than 20 years ago, the only outlet for individuals to broadcast their own personal and local interests was to use public access television channels or write letters to newspaper editors. But today, we hold a lot more power as broadcasters using digital outlets like Facebook Live, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat. And for good reason. The old definition of broadcast and entertainment was simplistic: Content mainly came from the establishment and sent in one direction, to us. But that reality is changing as the media and entertainment and industries are being turned upside down and outside in”

  • Special Report: Should comedians perform in the house of God?

Popular comedians, Still Ringing mounted the House On The Rock church’s pulpit at the recently held concert, The African Praise Experience(TAPE), and said:” Something will fall on you,

    Banana will fall on you,

    Enu Ose enu Ose,

    Ariwo Ko ni music ooh”.

The humorous duo got many wondering If they had not crossed the limits, in the delivery of their jokes on a pulpit which is supposed to be a sacred place to perform on. Still Ringing’s brand of comedy thrives on using secular songs and statements to make people laugh in the house of God.

An article published in Herald Magazine titled Uphold Holiness of the Pulpit opines that:” The pulpit must be a sacred place, a place where believers must use as a place of contact with their God should they choose to come forward to it and cast their burdens unto him.”

The deployment of stand-up comedians in churches and Christian events has become a trend in Christendom these days. While some Pastors see nothing wrong with it, other clerics see it as the pathway to defiling the altar of God. There are many choruses that echo the same sentiments about comedians performing in the church. Questions like’ How can an “entertainer” be invited to minister to “the people of God?” always comes up in such conversations.

Ace comedian and actor, Owen Gee in a chat with TheNewsGuru says:” This question I think has been over flogged, why do people complain about comedians performing in church? Are there musicians who perform in church? Yes! Are there stage plays being done in church? Yes! So why not comedy? I started my career performing in church and was amongst one of the first Christian comedians in the country.

“The church gave me my platform. Performance within the church environs is another way of communicating God’s word with the Christian audience using humour. If there are gospel musicians, then we should have gospel comedians. The opinion of a few people cannot stop the spread of the gospel via humour, God is a God of laughter”.

Revered Nigerian dramatist and founder of Mount Zion Drama Ministry, Mike Bamiloye condemns Nigerian clergies who invite comedians to perform at their church events. He affirms that making the mockery of the scriptures and the name of Jesus is unacceptable.

Hear him:” For a long while I have questioned the inclusion of comedy in church events. What do I question? The fact that the comedians brought in are allowed to make jokes of scriptures, the blood of Jesus, speaking in tongues, the throne of grace etc And we sit there laughing? What are we laughing at? What is funny? Mocking God, Christ, the Holy Spirit and the word of God is funny? We hear of other religions where they are obsessed with protecting the image of their leader and we gleefully allow people to mock our leader Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit and thereby indirectly mocking God? They look at us with disdain because we are bad ambassadors of our faith!”.

In the same vein, a former member of popular gospel music group, Infinity Kenny K’ore wrote on Facebook:” I have never seen anybody that God ordained and he is a comedian. I am told that pastors now invite comedians to joke with the word of God. This is an abomination in the sanctuary. I would not have worried if it was in a market. For you as a man of God to go and hire comedians means you have nothing to offer. If you have nothing to do in the ministry, please get out!”.

Josh2Funny, a renowned social media comedian in a chat with TheNewsGuru, says that the church is the best platform for stand-up comedy.

In his words:” The church is the best place to exhibit any talent because the talent was given to you by God.You should use it to worship him in his house. I won’t pretend that I don’t know that some comedians say some jokes that shouldn’t be said in the church. The important thing is for you to identify the comedians that are good enough to perform in your church. I believe the people of God deserve happiness in the presence of their father”.

Asiri, another comedian popular for his hilarious skits on Instagram affirms that the language used in communication is germane to the overall acceptance of comedy in the house of God.

Hear him:” Every community has its language. Every organization has its dynamics. If you know the language of the elites you will communicate well there. If you know the language of the streets, the streets will respond to you. If you know the language of the church, there is nothing wrong in communicating comedy there.

“The church just has to be sure of the pedigree of any personality gracing their platforms. Comedy in my own understanding is a game of dynamics and you can’t be a master of all dynamics. If you have what it takes to craft your joke without crossing the line as pertaining to a church audience, then you understand the dynamics. But if you don’t have the capacity to appeal to the church dynamics, there are several other platforms you can grace” he reveals to TheNewsGuru.

Nigerian broadcaster and on-air-personality, Olayemi Ogunwole a.k.a Honey Pot in an Interview with TheNewsGuru says: “The activities have to be interesting for people to be attracted. Yes, I love to worship God and I work six days a week. If churches have drama groups and choir departments, I think there is nothing wrong when comedians come to liven up the atmosphere. As long as the joke is not blaspheming or dragging the name of God in the mud. I have met comedians before who crack ethical and clean jokes and when they attend secular events they still share clean jokes. I think it’s not bad when people listen to clean jokes in church” she concludes.

Adedayo Aderombi popularly known as Deeone Comedian believes comedians should not be stopped from performing in churches because, in the presence of God, there is fullness of Joy.

“In the presence of God, there is fullness of Joy. In my view, comedy in the church is a good thing and should be encouraged as long as it is ethical.

“Ecclesiastes 3:4 says:” There is a time to laugh”. I think churches should encourage more gospel and ethical comedy, it is like medicine to the body” he reveals
