Klopp accused of influencing referee before Man Utd clash

Ex-Premier League ref Mark Clattenburg has accused Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp of trying influence match officials ahead of Sunday’s clash with Manchester United.

The German boss hit out at the awarding of penalties to United earlier this month, something which left his rival boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer feeling defensive.

In his column for the Mail, he wrote: “Jurgen Klopp must be getting worried, because his comments last week about Manchester United and penalties were straight out of Sir Alex Ferguson’s playbook.

“It was mind games — an attempt to influence referee Paul Tierney and get inside his head before a huge match between Liverpool and United this Sunday.

“Klopp was correct when he said United have won more penalties in two years than Liverpool have in his five and a half at Anfield. He was smart, because his comments could not get him into trouble with the authorities.”

Klopp was a ‘bad teacher’ to me – Lewandowski

Robert Lewandowski has spoken in glowing terms about his relationship with Jurgen Klopp, saying the now Liverpool boss was the “bad teacher” who propelled him on the path to greatness.

After finding life tough in his teenage years, Lewandowski began to score regularly for Znicz Pruszkow and Lech Poznan, which earned him a move to Borussia Dortmund in 2010.

Lewandowski’s start to life in the Bundesliga was not smooth sailing, as he was played in an unfamiliar No.10 position and found life tough in training under Klopp.

Things came to a head following a Champions League defeat to Marseille in September of 2011.

Lewandowski confronted Klopp and asked his manager what he wanted from him. Despite his German being patchy at that stage, the Poland international picked up on what was required of him and things blossomed to the extent that he won a second Bundesliga title before securing a move to Bayern Munich.

Revealing how his relationship with Klopp developed to the Players’ Tribune, Lewandowski said: “Jurgen was not only a father figure to me. As a coach, he was like the “bad” teacher. And I mean that in the best sense of the word.

“Let me explain. Think back to you when you were in school. Which teacher do you remember the most? Not the one who made life easy for you and never expected anything from you. No, no, no. You remember the bad teacher, the one who was strict with you. The one who put pressure on you and did everything to get the best out of you. That’s the teacher who made you better, right? And Jurgen was like that.

“He was not content to let you be a B student, you know? Jurgen wanted A+ students. He didn’t want it for him. He wanted it for you.

“He taught me so much. When I arrived at Dortmund, I wanted to do everything quickly: strong pass, one touch only. Jurgen showed me to calm down – to take two touches if necessary.

“It was totally against my nature, but soon I was scoring more goals.

“When I had that down, he challenged me to speed it up again. One touch. BANG. Goal. He slowed me down to speed me up. It sounds simple, but it was genius, really.”

    I love Wijnaldum, but… – Jurgen Klopp

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has hinted new contract talks with Gini Wijnaldum remain at stalemate.

With the Holland midfielder’s deal to expire in June, Liverpool are battling to secure him to a new contract.

Klopp told Sky Sports: “There is really nothing to say.

“I think I said it all about the fact that I love the person and the player. It’s not good or bad news, it’s just like that.

“If there is a decision, you will know it.”

  • Jurgen Klopp speaks out on Salah speculation

Jurgen Klopp speaks out on Salah speculation

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has spoken out on the speculation surrounding Mohamed Salah’s future at Anfield.

Salah has been nothing short of sensational since his €42 million (£38m/$51m) move to Anfield from Roma in the summer of 2017.

Former Egypt midfielder Mohamed Aboutrika caused a stir earlier this week when he suggested that the English champions are considering selling Salah amid reported interest from Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Goal reports that Liverpool are certain to offer a prized asset the chance to extend his current contract beyond 2023, but he seemed to leave the door open to a transfer during a recent interview with Spanish publication AS.

Ahead of the Reds’ home fixture against West Brom on Sunday, Klopp was asked to comment on Salah’s situation, and he moved to quash ongoing rumours once and for all.

“We never speak about deals, why should we start now?” the Liverpool manager told a pre-match press conference. “Mo is in a good mood, a good moment, really good shape so that is the most important thing.

“You would have seen him laughing a lot in training, he enjoyed the session.

“All the rest is nice for all of you to write about but internally, no.”

Mo Salah ‘very disappointed’ by Klopp captaincy snub

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah admits he was disappointed being overlooked for the captaincy last week.

Salah had hoped for the armband as Jordan Henderson was benched for the Champions League tie with FC Midtjylland, but it was given to Trent Alexander-Arnold instead.

Salah told AS: “Honestly, I was very disappointed.

“I was hoping to be the captain, but it’s a coach’s (Jurgen Klopp) decision. I accept it.”

Asked if he regards himself among the world’s best players, Salah continued: “Yes absolutely. Yes. [Laughs] When I look back on my career I want to feel that I achieved something special, that I did something special. That’s why I try to do my best in every game and every year for the club and also for myself.”

  • Liverpool’s Klopp Wins FIFA Best Men Coach

Liverpool’s Klopp Wins FIFA Best Men Coach

Liverpool’s coach, Jurgen Klopp, has been crowned as the best male coach in football at the 2020 FIFA Awards.

Klopp, who won the award in 2019, beat Leeds gaffer Marcelo Bielsa and Bayern Munich boss Hans-Dieter Flick to the 2020 version.

“As someone who is becoming accustomed to making history, Jurgen Klopp shouldn’t be surprised at becoming the first man to win The Best FIFA Men’s Coach Award in successive years,” FIFA said.

“Having picked up the prize in 2019 after leading Liverpool to the European title, he retains the crown thanks to a remarkable, record-breaking domestic campaign.

“The Reds won the English Premier League with a club-record 99 points – the second-most in the competition’s history – and did so playing a bold and exciting brand of football. More importantly, they ended the club’s 30-year wait for a top-flight title, offering yet more evidence – were any still needed – of their German coach’s managerial talents.”

Klopp takes fresh aim at TV companies after Liverpool defeat

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp took another dig at TV companies after defeat to Champions League opponents Atalanta.

Klopp, whose Liverpool side travel to Brighton for the 12.30pm kick-off on Saturday, claimed his side lacked intensity as they negotiate a packed fixture list between now and Christmas.

He told BT Sport after the Atalanta game: “I’m afraid to say but I think it (running out of steam) could happen not only to us but to other teams as well.

“You (BT Sport) my special friends ask us to go on Saturday at 12.30pm which is nearly a crime to be honest. It has nothing to do with the game tonight but congratulations for that.

“My only interest in the moment is that I get a thumbs up, nobody injured, let’s recover immediately. We take it.

“The boys are completely disappointed, frustrated, really, but we don’t have time for it to be honest. It’s just get fresh legs as quick as possible and go again, that’s it.”

EPL: Liverpool bury pair of Jurgen Klopp glasses

A pair of Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp’s glasses have been buried in a steel time capsule due to be opened in 2070.

To celebrate the opening of their new training centre, alongside manager Klopp’s distinctive spectacles, all to be unearthed in 50 years’ time, are a pair of boots signed by defender Virgil van Dijk, gloves from keeper Alisson and a tribute to the 96 victims of the 1989 Hillsborough tragedy.

Liverpool departed former practice ground Melwood last week, having moved there in the 1950s after deciding training at Anfield damaged the quality of the pitch for match-days.

  • Liverpool boss Klopp blasts Premier League

Liverpool boss Klopp blasts Premier League

Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp has hit out at the Premier League over their substitutes rule.

Klopp has been vocal in his criticism of the Premier League’s decision not to stick with last year’s temporary rule allowing five instead of three substitutions.

Premier League clubs voted against continuing with the five substitutions rule, which remains in place in many European competitions.

Smaller clubs had argued that the big teams had an advantage given their larger squads.

Yet Klopp took aim at Premier League’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Richard Masters, for failing to convince the clubs.

“It’s a lack of leadership. Richard Masters asked about it. All the other teams have to understand. It’s not an advantage, it is a necessity.

“We have to talk again. Masters sold it completely wrong. (We are) the only big league with three subs,” he said.

  • Liverpool: Jurgen klopp reveals Mane issue

Liverpool: Jurgen klopp reveals Mane issue

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed Sadio Mane played in the club’s Champions League win against Ajax on Wednesday despite suffering from a dead leg.

After playing the full 90 minutes against Everton in the Premier League on Saturday, Mane started the midweek clash against Ajax before being withdrawn in 60th minute alongside Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino.

The Senegal international was then spotted on the sidelines with an ice pack on his leg, sparking injury fears among Reds fans still dealing with news Virgil van Dijk is unlikely to feature again this season.

Mane’s diagnosis is however much better with Klopp confirming the attacker was simply dealing with a pre-existing issue.

“Sadio has since a few days a dead leg and deals with that in that area,” Klopp said post-match.

“That’s the only thing why it’s still painful but it’s not a problem. When he doesn’t play, he puts ice on it.”

Mane played a telling part in Liverpool’s sole goal in the 1-0 win over Ajax with his scuffed shot ultimately seeing Nicolas Tagliafico put the ball into his own net after 35 minutes.
