  • EPL: Mourinho, Solskjaer fire back at Klopp

The journey from the bench to the pundit’s studio is so quick in the modern game that some could be forgiven for thinking Manchester United had two managers after Sunday’s game.

Manchester United had a 1-1 draw with Liverpool at Old Trafford.

So, after Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp criticised Manchester United’s tactics and said their opening goal should have been ruled out for a foul, he received a surprising response.

It came not only from his Manchester United counterpart Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but also Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho was in charge of the club until he was sacked in December last year.

Klopp had made some pointed comments about the way Solskjaer set Manchester United up with a 5-3-2 formation and the way they focused on frustrating his side.

They had won all eight of their previous matches in the 2019/2020 English Premier League (EPL).

“Manchester United had momentum in the first half because they were purely there to defend against us,” said Klopp, who has yet to win at Old Trafford with Liverpool.

“Since I’m in England Manchester United always played like this,” he continued.

“I’m not the person who should be frustrated by Manchester United’s style. In the last years they just defend. That’s how it is, it’s no criticism, it’s just a fact,” he added.

“When you think Manchester United versus Liverpool, you think both teams attacking. But it’s not,” he said.

Solskjaer rejected the suggestion his team were defensive, saying they had been set up to pressure and attack.

And, he quickly received some support from his predecessor, who was more than once accused of “parking the bus” at Anfield.

Mourinho said Klopp had clearly not enjoyed the way Manchester United made the game difficult for Liverpool.

“He didn’t like the menu. He likes meat and he got fish. So, he was not happy,” said Mourinho, who noted that Solskjaer’s tactics had worked.

“They are of course much stronger against opponents who give them a chance of transitions and counter-attacks. Manchester United didn’t do that. And he didn’t like the menu.”

“They were organised. They had a plan. You can agree or disagree, but they had a game plan, they stuck to it.

“If I was Ole I would be proud, and a little bit frustrated, because I think the boys gave everything,” said Mourinho who had heard his name sung by Manchester United fans in the Stretford end.

Klopp was also upset that referee Martin Atkinson had not seen what he considered a foul by Victor Lindelof on Divock Origi

This was at the start of the move that led to Manchester United’s goal.

The German was annoyed that VAR had not overturned the goal but Solskjaer, unsurprisingly perhaps, felt the referee was correct in his verdict.

“Foul? No chance. We’re not playing basketball. He touched him, but it’s not a clear and obvious error,” he said.

  • EPL: Klopp scoops manager of the month award for September

Liverpool FC Manager Jurgen Klopp has been named English Premier League (EPL) manager of the month, the second time in a row.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Liverpool’s perfect start continued in September, with three wins.

They claimed a home win over Newcastle United as well as away victories at Chelsea and Sheffield United.

Klopp topped a four-man shortlist of Eddie Howe, Frank Lampard and Brendan Rodgers to take the award.

The European champions entered this week’s international break eight points clear at the top of the table after victory over Leicester.

That 3-1 win, secured by James Milner’s injury-time penalty, took their sequence of successive Premier League wins to 17.

Klopp, 52, has now won manager of the month on five occasions, having also taken the prize in September 2016, December 2018 and March 2019.

Liverpool return to action looking to equal Manchester City’s 18-match record on Oct. 20 when they face beleaguered Manchester United at Old Trafford.

  • Pukki, Klopp win August Premier League awards

Pukki, Klopp win August Premier League awards

Norwich striker Teemu Pukki has been named the Premier League Player of the Month for August.

The 29-year-old beat Burnley’s Ashley Barnes, Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino and Manchester City trio Sergio Aguero, Raheem Sterling and Kevin De Bruyne to the award.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp claims August’s Manager of the Month prize after his side won all four of their opening league games.

Roy Hodgson, Brendan Rodgers and Pep Guardiola were the three other nominees for the award.

Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Burnley maintained their perfect start and saw the club record a 13th consecutive league victory.

Pukki scored five goals in four games in August in what is his maiden Premier League season, including a hat-trick in their 3-1 victory against Newcastle.

The Finland international, signed on a free transfer from Danish side Brondby IF in 2018, scored 29 league goals to help Norwich seal promotion to the top flight as Sky Bet Championship winners last term.

  • Liverpool’s Champions League win is best night of our professional lives – Klopp

Liverpool’s Champions League win is best night of our professional lives – Klopp

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has said winning the Champions League is the “best night of our professional lives”.

The Reds beat Tottenham 2-0 in Madrid thanks to an early Mohamed Salah penalty and a late Divock Origi strike.

It is their first major trophy since Klopp arrived at Anfield in 2015.

“Did you ever see a team like this, fighting with no fuel in the tank? I am so happy for the boys, all these people and my family. They suffer for me, they deserve it more than anybody,” he said.

“It was an intense season with the most beautiful finish I ever could have imagined.”

Liverpool, who lost last season’s final to Real Madrid, finished on 97 points in this season’s Premier League, but finished second to Manchester City.

“I feel mostly relief, relief for my family. The last six times we flew on holiday with only a silver medal it didn’t feel too cool.

  • Liverpool will have no regrets if they lose out on league title – Klopp

Liverpool will look to finish the season strongly so that they have no regrets if they lose out on the English Premier League (EPL) title to reigning champions Manchester City.

The Merseyside club’s manager, Juergen Klopp, said on Thursday that they know they have done so well by giving their best and would not have any regrets.

Liverpool trail league leaders Manchester City by one point with three games to go.

With neither side facing a “top six’’ club in the run-in, Klopp hopes to take the title race right down to the wire.

“There are three games left, and we want to win them,” Klopp told reporters ahead of Huddersfield Town’s visit on Friday. “Huddersfield, Newcastle United, Wolves. That’s the situation.

“If we win it, we win it. If we don’t, there are no regrets as long as we give our best. If we win our next two games then the title will be decided on the final match day and that would be pretty special.”

Liverpool are looking to win their first league title since 1990.

But Klopp’s focus was on how this season has been a stepping stone for the Anfield side that will look to improve and compete for more titles in the future.

“The club and the people are waiting for a long time for it,” Klopp added. “It’s rather surprising because last season we were 25 points behind (Manchester City at the end of the season).
We have to carry on but only one team will be champion.

“However the season ends up, it is only the first step. We’re not finished, not the finished article. We will carry on and we will see.

“We don’t only play for being champion at the end of the season. Yes, it’s a big target and we are pretty close and have a chance, but it’s the first time, not the last time.”

With the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final to be played at Barcelona next week, Klopp said he would not tinker with the line-up when they face Huddersfield.

“This will be the last game I overthink anything,” Klopp said. “I will not push that preparation with a fresh line-up. We have enough time to recover for the next game. Barcelona has nothing to do with Friday night.”

Four Liverpool players were named in the Professional Footballers’ Association’s (PFA) Team of the Year announced earlier on Thursday.

Klopp however said more of his players deserved to be named in the team dominated by Manchester City.

“From my point of view, there could have been four, five, six, maybe seven more players involved,” the German boss said. “For me, my team is team of the season anyway.”

  • We’re on fire, Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp warns

We’re on fire, Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp warns

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has warned Porto that his team are “on fire” and not feeling the pressure of probably having to win all their remaining games this season.

Liverpool take on the Portuguese champions in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday, in a rematch of the last-16 tie they won last season.

Klopp’s side are also leading the Premier League with just five games to go, although Manchester City are just two points behind and have a game in hand.

When it was put to Klopp they may need to win all of the matches they still have to play this campaign, he said: “To be in the situation we are, we had to pretty much win all the games. We are used, this season, to this situation.

“It’s such a good time, you can feel it in this moment. We are in two big competitions, but we have to use this situation. We have not finished our development. We want to write a few proper things on the pages of this season.

“We’re on fire to be honest; in training you can see it. We are really in a good way.”

  • Mohamed Salah quality never in doubt – Klopp

Mohamed Salah quality never in doubt – Klopp

Jurgen Klopp insists he never had any doubts about the quality of Mohamed Salah after the Liverpool forward scored his first goal in nine games against Southampton on Friday night.

Salah’s 80th-minute strike put the Reds 2-1 up at St Mary’s, before Jordan Henderson secured the victory to put them two points clear at the top of the Premier League.

Salah had not scored since a 3-0 win over Bournemouth on February 9, but after the Egyptian helped Liverpool beat Saints, Klopp said: “It was never in doubt that he was a great player in my side.

“Super goal from Mo, super run. Fantastic finish. It was goal number 50 [in the Premier League] for Liverpool, an incredible number.

“He’s pretty consistent, very consistent. Physical things are always there, but how he stays always calm… it’s a nice moment. A first goal after a while.”

  • Klopp is used to winning with offside goals, says Pellegrini

Klopp is used to winning with offside goals, says Pellegrini

West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini said Jurgen Klopp “is used to winning with offside goals” after the Hammers held Liverpool to a 1-1 draw.

Michail Antonio’s equaliser prevented the Reds from going five points clear.

James Milner was in an offside position before setting up Sadio Mane’s opener but the assistant referee did not flag.

Liverpool’s Divock Origi should also have been flagged offside when he missed a late chance to win the game.

The managers then spoke at full-time and Chilean Pellegrini made clear afterwards he is still not over their highest-profile meeting six years ago.

Klopp’s Borussia Dortmund beat Pellegrini’s Malaga 3-2 in the 2013 Champions League quarter-finals courtesy of two injury-time goals. For the winner, four Dortmund players were offside.

“Klopp is used to winning with offside goals,” said Pellegrini. “He beat me against Malaga with a goal seven metres offside – so he cannot complain about anything.”

Of the Reds’ chances on Monday, he said: “They scored a goal one metre offside. And in the last minute with Origi in front of the linesman, again one metre offside.”

The former Manchester City boss added: “I said in the week that we need to win this game for our fans and if we are going to give a hand to Manchester City, well, they are my club also.

“Maybe that was the reason the manager of Liverpool didn’t like it.”

  • Klopp dismisses talk of Liverpool crumbling under pressure

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says his team have shown they are mentally equipped to handle a title run-in, having acquitted themselves well in high-pressure situations over the past few years.

Liverpool, who are five points ahead of defending champions Manchester City at the top of the table, drew 1-1 at home to Leicester City on Wednesday, prompting questions about their ability to stay the course as tension mounts in the run-in.

“Yes, there is pressure,” Klopp told Liverpool’s official website.

“There was pressure last year, a lot of pressure when we played Manchester City away in the quarterfinals of the Champions League, and we dealt with it.

“There was pressure (in the Champions League semifinals) at Rome, there was pressure in so many moments in the Premier League. We had to win each game.

“Will there be nervous moments? Yes, for sure. Don’t make them bigger than they are because there were nervous situations last year, two years ago, three years ago. That is part of football.”

Liverpool could end a 29-year wait for the league title if they can hold on until the end of the season and Klopp knows the club’s fans are likely to be feeling tense.

“This club has not been champions for 29 years, so how can people sit there and watch it like (they are watching) City?” he said.

“I don’t know how often they have been champions in the last five or six years – ‘Yeah, one more, why not? Whatever.’

“It’s a different situation. We really, the people really, desperately want it, that is how it is, they really want it with all they have. I get that and we try with all we have. But there are no guarantees. I am not a nervous person.”

  • FA Cup: Why Wolves defeated Liverpool – Klopp

FA Cup: Why Wolves defeated Liverpool – Klopp

Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp has disclosed why his side were defeated 2-1 by Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday night in the FA Cup encounter.

Goals from Raul Jimenez and Ruben Neves ensured Wolves defeated the Reds at Molineux Stadium.

However, Divock Origi did score for the Premier League leaders.

Klopp said Liverpool were defeated by Wolves because some of his players were sick.

Klopp was quoted by Goal as saying at post-match: “After the Man City game, we had immediately a few players who were ill, who showed [a] soar throat and what you can have in this period of the year. So, they were not even in after the City game.

“Pretty much all the players who were not here today had flu problems – apart from Ali [Alisson]. And so we had late changes. Like yesterday Adam [Lallana] was in our plans, Hendo [Jordan Henderson] was in our plans and Dejan was not in our plans, he should only have been on the bench. It happens, what happened. That doesn’t help a lot and we have to change again.

“We wanted to control the game because we were completely new, especially defensively completely new, so it makes sense to keep the ball.”

The defeat to Wolves means Liverpool are now out of the FA Cup.
