BREAKING: Paul Pogba banned from football for four years

France Midfielder Paul Pogba has been given a four-year ban from football by Italy’s anti-doping tribunal after testing positive for testosterone last August. A spokesman for the club told he had been notified of the decision against the 30-year-old World Cup winner, who had been provisionally suspended in September.

“We received notification from the tribunal this morning,” the spokesman said. Italy’s anti-doping body did not immediately respond when contacted by AFP.

Anti-doping prosecutors had called for the four-year ban to be imposed on the former Manchester United midfielder, who tested positive following Juventus’s opening match of the Italian Serie A season against Udinese on August 20, during which he was an unused substitute.

A month later a B sample confirmed the presence of testosterone, and he has been provisionally suspended since.

Pogba’s representatives said the testosterone came from a food supplement prescribed by a doctor he consulted in the United States.

Pogba, who returned to Juventus for a second spell in 2022 after six years at United, was a key member of the France team that won the World Cup in Russia in 2018, scoring in the final against Croatia.

His positive doping test came as he was trying to put behind him a difficult first season back at Juve, in which he made just 10 appearances and was troubled by off-field issues including an investigation into an extortion attempt against him.

Serie A: Juventus punished again, handed 10 points reduction

Italian side, Juventus suffered a double blow yesterday as they were punished by 10 points reduction by an Italian court before losing 4-1 away to Empoli in a Serie A encounter.

The decision was announced within moments of the club’s Monday night game at Empoli kicking off – and perhaps influenced by the news, Juventus’ three-game winning run was brought to a crashing halt by a 4-1 defeat to their mid-table hosts. That result, combined with the new sanctions, leaves their top-four hopes all but over.

The ruling meant they drop from a Champions League place  (second position) to seventh on the log with three games remaining.

Recall that the initial sanction was 15 points and that CONI was forced to reformulate the sentence after deduction in a new ruling by an Italian court investigating the club’s transfer dealings.

Juventus’ appealed a few months ago.

“Called by the Collegio di Garanzia dello Sport to renew its assessment of the sanction to be imposed on Juventus for the so-called ‘capital gains case’, the Federal Court of Appeal has sanctioned Juventus with 10 penalty points in the standings for the current sporting season,” reads the Italian Football Federation’s statement.

“The Court also acquitted Pavel Nedved, Paolo Garimberti, Assia Grazioli Venier, Caitlin Mary Hughes, Daniela Marilungo, Francesco Roncaglio and Enrico Vellano of the charges brought against them.”

Juventus has responded quickly through Francesco Calvo, one of its directors.

“We are not satisfied with the penalty of 10 points, we will see if there are margins to appeal,” he confirmed.

“This year we are up against everyone and everything.”

Serie A: Real reason i joined Juventus from Man Utd – Paul Pogba

The France international sealed a move back to Juventus on Monday after spending 6 years at Old Trafford.

The 29-year-old failed to raise any silverware in five of his six seasons with Manchester United.

Pogba will now begin his second stint with the Serie A giants, making the move from Old Trafford for the second time in his career.

At the age of 19, Pogba opted to leave United for Juve, only to return four years later in a club-record deal worth £89million.

And his return to Old Trafford got off to a decent start, as he won the EFL Cup and Europa League in his first campaign under Jose Mourinho.

But those trophies in 2017 would be his only ones back in a United shirt. Pogba endured a difficult relationship with Mourinho and success still eluded him under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The France midfielder, however, played a pivotal role in his country’s World Cup-winning campaign in Russia in 2018.

Pogba is now back at Juventus, where he won the league title in each of his four seasons with the Italian side.

And having finally completed his move, signing a lucrative four-year contract, he told supporters that he is desperate to be in the mix for major silverware once again.

In a video posted on social media, he said: “As you can see, I’m back and I’m very happy – I can’t wait to start with you and win trophies again. We’ll be there on the pitch in the stadium, all together.”

Juventus released a statement after Pogba’s return was confirmed. It read: “When we say goodbye after an intense adventure shared, there is always a glimmer of hope that we will see each other again, sooner or later.
