  • Juve’s gamble makes new Serie A season the most open for years

Juve’s gamble makes new Serie A season the most open for years

The decision by Juventus to hand the reins of coaching its team to untried Andrea Pirlo promises to make this season’s Serie A title race one of the most open in years.

Already, a queue of clubs are waiting to pounce should the champions’ remarkable gamble backfire.

The Turin side will be bidding for a 10th successive Serie A title this season, which kicks off on Saturday.

But they will do so under the leadership of a man who, for all his undoubted ability as a player, has never coached at senior level before.

Pirlo, who makes his debut at home to Sampdoria on Sunday, only received his official badge on Monday after presenting his thesis at the Italian federation’s coaching school in Florence.

It now remains to be seen how he will adapt to the new role.

“I’m the Juventus coach and it’s natural that anyone who comes here must win,” said Pirlo after a pre-season friendly against Novara.

“I know I have to win, it was like that as a player and it will be like that as a coach.”

There are further question marks over Juventus, including the way in which they staggered over the finish line last season, winning only two of their last eight matches.

There was also the issue of their dependence on Cristiano Ronaldo.

While his record cannot be questioned, Ronaldo’s presence demands that the team is built around him, leaving his coach short on tactical options as Pirlo’s predecessor Maurizio Sarri found.

With Juventus in transition, Serie A has become arguably the most difficult of the major European leagues to predict — not least because the transfer window does not close until Oct. 5.

This is two weeks after the opening fixtures.

Inter Milan, who finished one point behind Juve in second place last season, appear to be the most dangerous and obvious challengers to Juve’s dominance.

But that is if they can overcome the inconsistency which exasperated coach Antonio Conte last season.

Their neighbours AC Milan are equally intriguing.

After years of mid-table mediocrity, the seven-times European champions came to life in the second half of last season, partly inspired by the presence of 38-year-old forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Stefano Pioli, their experienced and amiable coach, seemed to have found the right blend of youth and experience — something Milan have been chasing for years.

That seemed to be why they were unbeaten for their last 13 matches of the season.

Yet, most observers agree that none of those three played the best football last season.

That honour belonged to Atalanta who blasted 98 goals on their way to finishing third.

Although, clubs of Atalanta’s size often struggle to keep their team together after a successful season, the Bergamo-based team appear to have escaped that fate.

Instead, they have consolidated their position after their UEFA Champions League debut last season.

Similarly, Lazio were outstanding for part of last season and led the table shortly before Serie A stopped due to the COVID-19 pandemic in March.

Their small squad struggled with the heavy fixture list after the break.

But they still finished fourth as forward Ciro Immobile equalled the Serie A scoring record for a single season with 36 goals.

With a few reinforcements, they could launch another challenge this season.

Lazio’s neighbours AS Roma, after exchanging one American owner for another following the take-over by the Texas-based Friedkin group, also finished strongly last season under Portuguese coach Paulo Fonseca.

Meanwhile, Napoli, who have been Juve’s main challengers for the past decade, overcame a mid-season crisis and finished with a trophy after winning the Coppa Italia.

With the feisty Gennaro Gattuso at the helm, they can certainly not be written off.

  • Giroud ‘surprised by Juventus messages’

    Giroud ‘surprised by Juventus messages’

Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud is surprised by talk of contact with Juventus.

It was reported that Giroud is a target for Juventus, but the 33-year-old said that such claims are “far from the truth”.

Giroud told Telefoot: “I was surprised to receive messages from mates talking about the Juventus rumour.

“It is far from the truth. I am a Chelsea player & I feel good here. I did not have a great end of season just to leave without a bit of faith.”

The 33-year-old signed an extension to his Blues contract in May which will cover the entirety of the 2020-21 season, however this has not deterred interested clubs.

He maintains he is determined to fight for his spot in Lampard’s starting XI after the £53million arrival of Timo Werner from RB Leipzig.

“One thing is certain: the competition will pull us all to the top. A great club should have different options in each position.

“We want to be in the race for the title and I’m here. I finished the season well and I proved to the manager that he can count on me.

“Werner is not the same profile as me, I hope to have some playing time.”

Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud is in contact with Juventus.

Giroud has agreed a deal in principle with Juventus as the Serie A giants target alternatives to Barcelon striker Luis Suarez, reports Italian transfer expert Gianluca di Marzio.

The Italian champions are looking for a new striker after agreeing to release Gonzalo Higuain, with Barcelona star Suarez believed to be their top target.

And Giroud has emerged as a serious alternative with the French forward facing a battle to nail down a first-team spot at Chelsea this season.

The 33-year-old striker has reached an ‘agreement in principle’ with the Turin side over a two-year deal.

Giroud faces competition for a starting spot at Stamford Bridge from summer signing Timo Werner, as well as young England forward Tammy Abraham.

He will want first-team football as he targets a place in the France squad for next summer’s postponed Euro 2020 finals.

Serie A: Juventus terminate Higuain contract

Juventus have terminated Gonzalo Higuain’s contract with a year left to run, paving the way for the Argentine striker to make a move to Inter Miami on a two-season deal, Goal reports

The 32-year-old, who arrived in Turin in 2016 as one of the most expensive transfers in football history, has seen the curtain brought down on his career with the Bianconeri as he prepares to switch to Major League Soccer on a contract that will run until 2022.

The former Argentina forward, who announced his international retirement last year, was signed from Napoli following a season where he finished as Serie A’s top scorer and enjoyed a fruitful first two seasons at Allianz Stadium.

But he spent the 2018-19 campaign farmed out first to Milan and then Chelsea after Cristiano Ronaldo arrived from Real Madrid, surprising onlookers who had expected both to star in attack together.

Though he returned to the club last year, reuniting with his former Blues boss Maurizio Sarri, he has not done enough to figure in new coach Andrea Pirlo’s plans going forward, and was thought to be mulling over a number of options surrounding his future.

Now, he looks almost certain to join David Beckham’s expansion side in Florida, having agreed personal terms with the club, with a medical set to follow shortly.

Suarez demands £12m payoff from Barca

Luis Suarez has agreed to join Juventus from Barcelona, but will only make the move if he can finalize his £12m payoff from the Catalans, Guillem Balague reports.

The 33-year-old striker looks set to line up alongside Cristiano Ronaldo next season rather than Lionel Messi.

However, Suarez is happy to be paid one season’s wages by Barca to get him off their books.

The Uruguayan does not have to leave Camp Nou and has one more year on his existing contract.

If Suarez plays 60 percent of the games next season, he would trigger another year extension, but it appears all parties are ready to move on.

He will join Juventus as either a free agent or for a small nominal transfer fee.

Suarez joined Liverpool for £74million six years ago.

Barcelona striker Luis Suarez has agreed personal terms with Juventus, according to reports in Italy.

Sky Sports Italy and Gazzetta dello Sport say Suarez has reached an agreement to join Juve on a deal worth €10m a year.

Andrea Pirlo’s side are reportedly waiting for the 33-year-old Uruguay international to terminate his Barca contract before securing his services. Terminating Suarez’s contract would reportedly cost the La Liga club £22m in severance.

Should Suarez join Juventus then he would likely take advantage of the Italian government’s growth decree that will allow the forward to save the club almost 50 per cent of his wages in two years.

Juve’s veteran striker Gonzalo Higuain is expected to leave for MLS or Inter Milan.

Barcelona are refusing to consider releasing Arthur Melo to Juventus.

The midfielder has already signed for Juve in a deal worth €10m plus Miralem Pjanic, but that is only active from the 2020-21 season.

Arthur is demanding he be released immediately by Barca.

But Sport says Barcelona won’t let him leave without some compensation from the player for going AWOL earlier this month.

They want to impose a heavy fine on the Brazilian, even if that means dragging out his absence from Turin.

Ronaldo offered to Barca in move to join Messi

Cristiano Ronaldo has reportedly been offered to Barcelona in a sensational move that would see him play alongside Lionel Messi.

With the Serie A champions hit hard financially by the Covid-19 pandemic, the club is looking to get rid of Ronaldo’s mammoth contract and have contacted Barcelona about their interest, according to Spanish journalist Guillem Balague.

He told 5 Live Sport: ‘He’s been offered everywhere, including Barcelona. I’m not sure if they can get rid of him easily with the kind of money he earns. Who is going to pay that kind of money?’

Ronaldo was Juve’s top scorer during the recent season with 35 goals in all competitions.

De Ligt undergoes shoulder surgery, as Matuidi departs Juventus

Defender Matthijs de Ligt has undergone surgery in his shoulder and faces a recovery period of about three months, Italian champions Juventus said on Wednesday.

The Dutch national had his shoulder stabilised in a Rome clinic on his 21st birthday, after he had played with pain in the joint in the last part of the season.

Juventus will miss him for the first two months of the league, which starts on Sept. 19.

The Turin club bought de Ligt from Ajax last year for 75 million euros (88.4 million dollars).

After a period of adjustment he became a mainstay for the Bianconeri, closing the season with 29 league appearances and four goals.

The Bianconeri also bid farewell to French midfielder Blaise Matuidi, a 2018 world champion who leaves Turin after three seasons.

The 33-year-old is expected to sign with a club of the North American Major League Soccer (MLS).

Serie A: Juve offering 3 stars to Arsenal for Lacazette

Juventus are offering Arsenal a series of players to sign Alexandre Lacazette.

Mikel Arteta has also been told by the club’s hierarchy that he will need to reduce the team’s wage bill this summer – and Lacazette could be one of the men to go considering he is among the Gunners’ highest earners on a deal worth around £180,000-a-week.

The Athletic reports Juventus are ready to take advantage of the situation by offering Gonzalo Higuain, Douglas Costa or Cristian Romero in exchange for the France international.

The Italian champions need more fire-power up front to help ease the burden on Cristiano Ronaldo and Paulo Dybala next season.
