Coronavirus: Juventus quarantine entire Under-23 team

Juventus suspended the activities of their Under-23 team on Saturday and there were reports the players have been quarantined after a fourth player at third-tier club Pianese, their most recent opponents, tested positive for the coronavirus.

The Turin club, whose under-23 team play in Serie C, said it was a precautionary measure and they were in constant contact with health authorities.

“It is specified that, six days after the game, the Juventus players remain asymptomatic and are under medical supervision,” added the club statement.

Gazetta Dello Sport said the players had been quarantined in their homes, though this was not mentioned by Juventus.

Their under-23 side beat Pianese 1-0 last Sunday.

Earlier, Pianese said that “after a series of checks, Pianese announce that a fourth player is infected by Covid-19.

“He too is in solitary confinement at home and is under observation by the relevant authorities.”

One member of staff has also been infected.

The club, based in Piancastagnaio in the region of Tuscany, said on Friday that the entire squad have been quarantined in their homes.

It said the first player tested positive on Thursday, several days after he missed a match because he was feeling slightly feverish.

The number of deaths in Italy from the illness rose to 29 on Saturday and the accumulated total of cases reached 1,128, authorities said.

Twenty of the 30 Serie C matches this weekend have been postponed because of the virus. Five Serie A games have also been called off.

  • Even Cristiano Ronaldo can’t make Juventus great

So soon after equalling a Serie A goalscoring record at the weekend, Cristiano Ronaldo has been brought crashing back down to earth on a night of Champions League frustration.

The hope was when Ronaldo joined Juve in July 2018 he would be the man to help the Bianconeri finally end a wait for glory on Europe’s top stage that now stretches 24 years. It’s not going to plan.

Having scored in a record-equalling 11th consecutive league match in Saturday’s win over SPAL, the Portugal forward looked ready to head into Wednesday evening’s game away at Lyon with goals and the quarter-finals on his mind.

Lyon, only seventh in Ligue 1, had other ideas. Resolute throughout, they limited Ronaldo and his side to a grand total of zero shots on target as they wrapped up a 1-0 win.

Juventus’ number seven was not the only frustrated figure. Fans and pundits took to social media and the overall feeling is that if Ronaldo can’t drag Juve to the final, then nobody can…

  • Juventus succumb to defeat at Lyon

Lyon shocked Italian giant, Juventus on Wednesday as they produced a spirited display to take a surprise lead after the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.

Lucas Tousart scored the only goal in the first half as the hosts claimed their first victory over the Italian giants, BBC reports.

Juventus started confidently but failed to create any clear chances before Tousart converted Houssem Aouar’s cross from close range to hand the Ligue 1 side the lead.

The visitors continued to have more possession but they struggled to penetrate the resolute Lyon defence, failing to register a single shot on target.

With the clock ticking down, Juventus ramped up the pressure, but Paulo Dybala’s late strike was ruled out for offside.

The second leg will take place at Allianz Stadium on 17 March (20:00 GMT).

  • Ronaldo scores to mark 1,000th senior appearance

Cristiano Ronaldo marked his 1,000th senior appearance by scoring in Juventus’ Serie A game with SPAL on Saturday.

The Portugal star opened the scoring in the first half with a tap in – the 725th goal of his career.

BBC reports that Ronaldo has now played 835 games in club football and 164 on the international stage.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s extraordinary career began at Sporting in Lisbon, where he made 31 appearances from 2002 to 2003 before moving to Manchester United, aged 18.

After six years and 292 appearances at United, Ronaldo joined Real Madrid in 2009 and remained there until 2018 when he made the switch to Juventus.

As can been seen by the table below, Ronaldo really hit his scoring stride in the 2006-07 season when he struck more than 20 goals in a season for the first time. The consistency since then has been nothing short of phenomenal.

Ronaldo has got better with age, particularly at the international level. After hitting single-figure totals in his first 10 seasons with Portugal, he has scored 10 or more goals in three of the past four seasons.

UEFA lists records Ronaldo can break at 35

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has listed the records Juventus superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo, can break in the Champions League.

According to UEFA, Ronaldo can become the 50th player aged over 35 to score in the Champions League since the competition was introduced in 1992/1993 and also overtake the goals record of Didier Drogba (5), Laurent Blanc (4), Filippo Inzaghi (4), Ryan Giggs (3), Ulf Kirsten (4).

The European football body said this while extending birthday wishes to Ronaldo, as he turns 35 years on February 5.

In a statement on their official website, UEFA said: “Cristiano Ronaldo turns 35 today: that means a chance to break more UEFA Champions League records as one of the top 35+ scorers in the history of the competition.

“Ronaldo’s first challenge is to become the 50th player aged over 35 to score in the Champions League since the competition started in 1992/1993.

After that, the Juventus and Portugal forward can see whether he can overtake the following luminaries:
    5: Didier Drogba (Galatasaray, Chelsea)
    4: Laurent Blanc (Manchester United)
    4: Filippo Inzaghi (AC Milan)
    3: Ryan Giggs (Manchester United)
    3: Ulf Kirsten (Bayer Leverkusen).”

  • Ronaldo scores 50th Juventus goal

Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 50th goal for Juventus as he netted twice in the Bianconeri’s 3-0 win over Fiorentina on Sunday.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner into the match on 48 strikes for the Turin side, who he joined in the summer of 2018 from Real Madrid.

He gave Juventus the lead five minutes from the break via a penalty and with 10 minutes of the match remaining, he repeated the trick to bring up the landmark figure for the Turin side.

Ronaldo equalled the feat first achieved by David Trezeguet, who got his goals from October to December 2005.

The 34-year-old, meanwhile, began his run in the December 1 fixture against Sassuolo, when he netted in a 2-2 draw. A week later he was on target in a 3-1 loss away to Lazio while further goals against Udinese (two) and Sampdoria followed before the winter break.

He started 2020 with a bang as he grabbed a hat-trick against Cagliari, also getting an assist in that fixture for good measure, before netting against Roma, Parma (two) and in last weekend’s 2-1 loss to Napoli.

While he failed to net in the Supercoppa Italiana loss to Lazio three days before Christmas, he did score a Champions League goal against Bayer Leverkusen during this spell and was also on the scoresheet against Roma in the Coppa Italia on January 22.

He will attempt to keep the remarkable sequence going when Juve travel to face Verona on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo, who is also Real Madrid’s record scorer, having netted 450 times in 438 matches for the Santiago Bernabeu giants, has now taken 151 penalties during his career, including shootouts, with his tally standing at 126 converted and 25 missed – a success rate of 83.4 percent, Goal reported.

Reacting to his latest achievement with Juventus, Ronaldo wrote on Twitter: “Good to get back to victories and happy to score again in our stadium! Proud to reach 50 goals with the Bianconeri shirt!”

  • Ronaldo hits another goal in Juventus’ win

Cristiano Ronaldo can’t stop scoring, as he netted again on Wednesday as Juventus mauled Roma 3-1 to reach Copa Italia Semi-Finals.

It was his 13th goal in his past 10 matches for Juventus.

The football superstar opened the scoring in the first half when he fired home from Gonzalo Higuain’s cross.

Rodrigo Bentancur and Leonardo Bonucci quickly added two more to make it 3-0 to Juventus before the break.

Roma got one back when Cengiz Under’s shot hit the bar and bounced in off goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.

Juventus will face either AC Milan or Torino in the semi-finals.

Ronaldo’s goal is the seventh the 34-year-old has scored in 2020 and was also his first in the Coppa Italia, meaning he has now scored in 15 different club competitions in his career, BBC reports.

  • I don’t want to be a role model – Buffon

After lining up for Juventus against Sampdoria last year, Gianluigi Buffon equalled Paolo Maldini’s record for most Serie A appearances.

The 41-year-old is Serie A’s third oldest ever player with his haul of nine domestic titles a record he already has all to himself.

While Buffon’s success and longevity is inevitably a source of inspiration for many, the man himself has stressed he doesn’t want to be burdened by being a role model.

“It’s a satisfaction that makes me proud, it’s right to be proud [of the Serie A appearance record]. Life is made of sacrifice and sweat, but also of beautiful and frivolous things,” Buffon told Calciomercato.com.

“I don’t want to be a model for children and people, it’s not my aspiration, I don’t feel the need to educate anyone.

“Many would like you to take on these responsibilities, but the education of a child is up to the parent.

“I can be a food for thought, if a family at the table sees Buffon making 700 appearances in Serie A the father could say: ‘See Buffon, besides the man – whom I don’t know – had the character to suffer at certain times, the ability and humility to improve’.

“I want to be this for my children, but I don’t want to put pressure on them.”
