    Juventus names Sarri new coach

Maurizio Sarri has been named new coach of Serie A champions Juventus on a three-year contract after leaving Chelsea, the Italian club has said.

The 60-year-old Sarri spent just one season in the Premier League after joining Chelsea from Napoli and moved on in spite finishing third and winning the Europa League.

Juventus split with previous coach Massimiliano Allegri at the end of last season to conclude a five-year reign.

They have won the last eight Italian titles but exited the Champions League in the quarter-finals this term.

Sarri would be tasked with improving Cristiano Ronaldo’s Juventus in Europe’s elite competition.

Chelsea have been linked in the media with a bid to make former player Frank Lampard, who currently manages derby, their next boss.

  • Chelsea agree deal for Sarri to join Juventus

Chelsea agree deal for Sarri to join Juventus

Chelsea have agreed a deal in principle for their manager Maurizio Sarri to join Serie A champions Juventus.

An agreement was reached late on Thursday evening after talks between senior officials. A deal could be completed as early as Friday.

It is understood a compensation fee in excess of £5m has been agreed.

Sarri arrived from Napoli in July 2018 and led the Blues to third place in the Premier League and won the Europa League in his one season in charge.

Despite signing a three-year deal last July, he will become the ninth full-time manager to leave the club under Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich.

Throughout the 60-year-old Italian’s time at Stamford Bridge there was repeated speculation about his position, with Chelsea fans expressing their discontent at tactics and team selections.

One of the low points came in February when goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga challenged his authority by refusing to be substituted in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley, shortly before Chelsea were beaten in a penalty shootout by Manchester City.

But Sarri did manage to win his first ever trophy as manager with a 4-1 victory over Arsenal in May in the Europa League final, and after the match said “he deserved” to stay with the club.

Chelsea are currently unable to sign any players after they were banned for two transfer windows by Fifa – a decision they are appealing at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Their star player Eden Hazard has joined Real Madrid for a fee that could exceed £150m.

Significantly, Chelsea have not asked for the suspension to be put on hold until a final decision is reached. It means their only new arrival might be USA forward Christian Pulisic, a £58m signing from Borussia Dortmund in January, who spent the remainder of the campaign on loan in Germany.

Juventus are managerless after Massimiliano Allegri left at the end of last season, having won the league title in each of his five seasons since taking charge in 2014.

Chelsea coach Sarri moves out of London home

Maurizio Sarri has moved out of his London home as he waits for Chelsea to allow him to move to Juventus.

The Daily Mail says Sarri and his staff remain in limbo while they wait for his Chelsea exit to be rubber-stamped.

Sarri went back to Italy last week ahead of his expected appointment as Juventus boss.

Once he returned to his home in Tuscany, Sarri gave an interview to an Italian magazine explaining how much he has missed Italy while he has been in charge at Chelsea.

Yet the clearest hint that he has no intention of coming back to England is the fact he has cleared out the Surrey home he was staying in and moved all his property back to Italy.

Members of his coaching staff had also given their notice ahead of moving out of their rented properties before Sarri vacated his home.

The call of Italy is strong, says Chelsea boss Sarri

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri says he misses Italy amid reports he could leave the club to join Juventus.

Sarri’s future has been the subject of debate all season despite only moving to Stamford Bridge from Napoli last summer.

The 60-year-old led Chelsea to third in the Premier League, the Carabao Cup final and won the Europa League in the final against Arsenal on 29 May.

“For us Italians the call of home is strong,” Sarri told Vanity Fair.

“I feel that something is missing. It has been a heavy year. I begin to feel the weight of distant friends and elderly parents I rarely see.

“But at my age, I only make professional choices. I won’t be able to work for 20 years. It’s hard work, the bench.”

Sarri says his relationship with the Napoli fans will not change even if he does move to a rival Italian club.

“The Neapolitans know the love I feel for them. I chose to move abroad last year and not to go on an Italian team,” he said, having managed them from 2015 to 2018.

“The relationship will not change. Loyalty is giving 110% when you are there. What does it mean to be faithful?”

Sarri, who is due to hold talks with Chelsea about his future, said he thinks he “deserves” to stay at the club after their 4-1 Europa League final victory.

  • Serie A: Juventus signal interest in Paul Pogba

Serie A: Juventus signal interest in Paul Pogba

Juventus are interested in signing Paul Pogba back from Manchester United, according to Sky in Italy.

The Italian champions have made contact with Pogba’s agent Mino Raiola over a potential summer move for the France international, and also understood that Manchester United have been informed of Juventus’ interest.

Pogba first joined Juve on a free transfer in 2012 after struggling to secure regular first-team football at Old Trafford.

The midfielder enjoyed four successful seasons in Turin before rejoining United in 2016 for a then world-record fee of £89m.

Pogba has experienced mixed fortunes during his second spell in Manchester, scoring 31 goals in 135 games since returning to the club.

The 2018 World Cup winner still has two years remaining on his current deal at United, with the club holding an option to trigger a further 12-month extension to his contract.

Real Madrid have also been linked with Pogba and the midfielder fuelled speculation he could move to the Bernabeu this summer after describing the club as “a dream for anyone” in April.

  • EPL: Sarri expects to be released by Chelsea

EPL: Sarri expects to be released by Chelsea

Maurizio Sarri expects to be released from his Chelsea contract, paving the way for him to take over as Juventus manager, Sky in Italy understands.

In his first season at Stamford Bridge, Sarri secured Chelsea a return to the Champions League by sealing a third-placed Premier League finish, before claiming the first major trophy of his career by lifting the Europa League.

However, Sarri endured consistent criticism from a significant portion of the club’s supporters throughout the season and, amid interest from Serie A champions Juventus, the 60-year-old held talks with Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia on Friday.

Sarri informed her he wants to leave Chelsea this summer and she promised to talk to the club’s owner Roman Abramovich about his future.

Sources have told Sky in Italy that there do not appear to be any major obstacles in the way of Sarri succeeding Massimiliano Allegri as Juve boss and it is expected to happen quickly.

  • Ronaldo celebrates 600th club goal in Juventus’ draw with Inter

Cristiano Ronaldo scored the 600th club goal of his career as Serie A champions Juventus drew with Inter Milan.

Ronaldo’s low strike, following a back-heel from team-mate Miralem Pjanic, brought Juventus level at the San Siro.

Radja Nainggolan had given the hosts the lead with a spectacular 25-yard volley after Matteo Politano’s flick.

BBC reports that Ronaldo has now scored 27 goals for Juventus after five for Sporting Lisbon, 118 at Manchester United and 450 for Real Madrid.

His 600th career club goal came on the same day as Lionel Messi scored his 598th Barcelona goal, during their match against Levante.

Juventus may well have already won Italy’s Serie A title but that did not stop Inter fans from mocking their rivals.

  • BREAKING: Juventus seal eighth successive Serie A title

BREAKING: Juventus seal eighth successive Serie A title

Juventus have won the Serie A title for an eighth successive season after a 2-1 victory over Fiorentina on Saturday.

Massimiliano Allegri’s men have been dominant pacesetters for much of the campaign and a dramatic triumph over AC Milan earlier in April put them on the brink.

Napoli’s subsequent draw at home to Genoa delayed the Bianconeri’s celebrations by another week, while a defeat at SPAL that saw Allegri rest players for their Champions League quarter-final with Ajax – which Juve lost 3-2 on aggregate – extended the wait.

And it looked as though the party would be spoiled once again when La Viola took an early lead through Nikola Milenkovic at the Allianz Stadium, before Juve turned the match around via Alex Sandro and German Pezzella’s own goal.

Juve’s clinching of the title rounds off a hugely impressive season domestically, having dropped points in just five matches.

Allegri’s side have sealed the Scudetto with five games still to play, making it one of the earliest title triumphs in history across Europe’s big five leagues – and a joint-record in Italy’s top flight.

Cristiano Ronaldo has undoubtedly been key to their success, having scored 19 Serie A goals from just 27 appearances, while he was rested for Juve’s two defeats this season, against Genoa and SPAL.

  • Serie A: Napoli win to delay Juventus title celebrations

Serie A: Napoli win to delay Juventus title celebrations

Napoli postponed Juventus’ march to the Serie A title and consigned Chievo to relegation with a 3-1 win at the Stadio Bentegodi on Sunday.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side needed a victory to ensure that the Turin club, who lost 2-1 at SPAL on Saturday, would not wrap up their eighth consecutive league championship with a record six games to spare.

Two goals from Kalidou Koulibaly either side of an Arkadiusz Milik strike confirmed Chievo’s demotion.

Even Bostjan Cesar’s late consolation could not save Chievo after a miserable season in which the Verona club have recorded just one win in 32 games.

The result leaves second-placed Napoli on 67 points, 17 behind runaway leaders Juventus on 84.

However, Juve can secure the title by avoiding defeat at home to Fiorentina next weekend.

  • UCL: Ronaldo scores as Juventus held to a draw at Ajax

UCL: Ronaldo scores as Juventus held to a draw at Ajax

Cristiano Ronaldo produced yet another quality goal to add to his collection and help Juventus to a 1-1 draw at Ajax Amsterdam in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie on Wednesday.

Juventus took the lead on the stroke of halftime as Portuguese forward Ronaldo began an attacking move inside his own half.

He then sprinted down field and diving to head in a clever chip from Joao Cancelo.

Ajax equalised 30 seconds into the second half after Cancelo lost control of the ball to allow David Neres to run down the left wing.

The Ajax player then cut inside and curl the ball past Juve goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny.

The result leaves the Serie A side in a strong position to advance to the semi-finals in next week’s return leg in Turin.

However, they will be mindful of Ajax’s 4-1 away win over Real Madrid in the last round that eliminated the holders 5-3 on aggregate.

Hakim Ziyech had several efforts at goal in a lively start for the youthful Dutch team, who have come through the pre-group phase qualifying round to reach the last eight.

Donny van de Beek scraped the outside of the upright with a 25th minute effort from close range after opening up space for himself in the penalty area in Ajax’s best chance of the first half.

But Juventus, with the 34-year-old Ronaldo central to their attacks, worked their way into the contest and came close themselves.

Ronaldo set up Federico Bernardeschi to turn and shoot in the 37th minute. But he was just off target.

Ronaldo, who scored a hat-trick in the previous round against Atletico Madrid, then scored a 125th Champions League goal.

After equalising, Ajax then dominated possession but were guilty of over-elaborate passing and were also fortunate not to have given away a penalty.

Defender Nicolas Tagliafico was tugging on the jersey of Juventus captain Mario Mandzukic and was lucky not to be punished.

Spanish referee Carlos del Cerro Grande paused briefly in the 53rd minute to presumably hear from the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) but resumed play before TV replays showed that Juventus had been denied a decent claim.

However, influential left back Tagliafico will miss the second leg next Tuesday after being booked late in the first half.

Juve hit the upright in the closing stages through substitute Douglas Costa although Ajax could have had the last say as Dusan Tadic missed a good chance in stoppage time.

More than 100 Juventus supporters were detained by Dutch police before the match while home fans were also arrested as a water cannon was used outside the ground.
