Racial comment: Bonucci expressed himself badly, says Allegri

Juventus defender Leandro Bonucci “expressed himself badly” when he offered his opinion on the racist abuse directed at team-mate Moise Kean, according to boss Massimilano Allegri.

Bonucci said in a post-match interview that Kean should shoulder 50 per cent of the blame for the abuse which came his way during the Serie A match against Cagliari on Tuesday.

The Juventus defender has since claimed that he was “clearly misunderstood” and was “too hasty” in what he said after the match.

Allegri, who was also criticised for saying Kean should not have celebrated scoring against Cagliari in the manner he did, attempted to set the record straight.

“The form of racism must always be fought against and can never be justified, never ever,” Allegri said.

“I talked about the behaviour of the player, but I didn’t want to justify the behaviour of the public.

“What I said about Kean’s attitude is very different because sometimes he does things that he shouldn’t, like mocking opponents with a result, but all players must have a correct and respectful behaviour.

“Bonucci expressed himself badly but realised this and apologised.”

  • Juventus could clinch Serie A title with seven games left

Juventus will have a first shot at clinching an eighth successive Serie A title at the weekend although they will need help from the only team to have beaten them in the league this season.

Second-placed Napoli’s shock defeat at Empoli on Wednesday has left the Turin side a massive 18 points clear, meaning it is time to get the calculators out almost two months before the end of the season.

In one of the most lop-sided championships in history, Juventus will clinch the title if they beat AC Milan at home on Saturday and then Napoli lose at home on Sunday to Genoa, who ended Juve’s hopes of an unbeaten league season three weeks ago.

That combination would leave Massimiliano Allegri’s side 21 points clear with seven games each to play and a better head-to-head record over Napoli.

They would also remain on course to break their own Serie A record of 102 points set in 2013-14, the last season before Antonio Conte left and was replaced by current coach Allegri.

Helped by the signing of five times World Player of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo, Juventus have been utterly dominant this season, winning 26 of their 30 matches, drawing three and losing one.

They have the best attack and defence with 62 goals for and 19 conceded although they have been ruthless rather than sparkling.

Twelve of their wins have been by one-goal margins, nine by two goals and five by three goals and they have only once scored more than three goals in a league game.

There have been a handful of impressive comebacks and dramatic wins but mostly it has been a case of getting the job done as efficiently as possible and leaving enough energy for their main aim, which is winning the Champions League.

Ronaldo will miss the Milan game with a thigh injury and is doubtful for the Champions League quarter-final first leg away to Ajax Amsterdam on Wednesday.

However, Allegri said after the 2-0 win to Cagliari on Tuesday that their injury crisis was easing with Mario Mandzukic available and Leonardo Spinazzola, Douglas Costa and Paulo Dybala all close to returning.

The game will be a severe test for Gennaro Gattuso’s AC Milan who are fourth, the lowest of the Champions League slots, but have followed a run of five league wins in a row by taking only one point out of their last three matches.

“The strength that we’ve had for three or four months was missing,” said Gattuso after Tuesday’s 1-1 draw at home to lowly Udinese.

“We gave the feeling of fragility. We must remain calm. We know that we’re going through a tough spell and we must get out of it.”

Gattuso said his team were going through one of those phases where the ball feels heavier.

“When you win five matches but then face some difficulties, the ball starts to weigh heavily,” he said. “Things that happen that should be prevented and this is the moment we’re in.”

  • Juve’s Kean says goal celebration was best response to racist abuse

Juve’s Kean says goal celebration was best response to racist abuse

Juventus forward Moise Kean has stood by his goal celebration, saying it was the best way to answer racism.

Some had blamed the goal celebration for the 19-year-old suffering alleged racist abuse in Tuesday’s Serie A match at Cagliari.

Meanwhile, European football’s anti-discrimination watchdog FARE described racism in football as the “Italian epidemic” and said there had been an alarming rise in incidents.

Kean, who had been jeered throughout the game, turned in Rodrigo Bentancur’s cross with five minutes left to complete a 2-0 win for runaway Serie A leaders Juve.

He then stood in front of the Cagliari fans behind the goal and opened his arms.

In response, Cagliari’s supporters made the noise which is described in Italy as “buu” and is regarded as a racist insult.

Although, some fans have argued it is a noise made simply to annoy opposing players, regardless of race.

Kean later posted a picture of the celebration with the message: “The best way to respond to racism” while his team mate, France midfielder Blaise Matuidi, posted the same picture with the message: “Black and White. #notoracism.”

There was no official comment on Wednesday from either club.

Serie A’s disciplinary committee is likely to deal with the incidents on Friday, once the entire match day has been completed.

Immediately after the game, Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci said that Kean was partly to blame for the incidents, for not celebrating with his team mates.

Cagliari president Tommaso Giulini denied the crowd had been racist.

He said he heard “mostly boos” and that the Cagliari fans would have reacted the same way if “any other player” had performed a similar celebration.

Under the heading “Italian epidemic”, FARE published a statement on Twitter which read: “Our message to Italian football on the alarming rise in racist incidents is simple. Enough is enough.”

Former FC Barcelona and Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure said it was unbelievable that such incidents could happen in 2019.

“The team mate… saying to the player you should not have done that. It’s a disgrace. People need to take this seriously. I was shocked when I saw it,” the Ivorian told the Equal Game conference in London.

England forward Raheem Sterling, targeted during a 5-1 Euro 2020 qualifying win in Montenegro last week, posted Bonucci’s comment on Instagram and said: “All you can do now is laugh.”

In December, Inter Milan were ordered to play two home games behind closed doors after Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly was racially insulted during a game at San Siro.

In 2017, Ghanaian player Sulley Muntari was booked and sent off after complaining about racist abuse while playing for Pescara, also at Cagliari.

Matuidi also complained that he suffered racist abuse in another game at Cagliari last season.

    The Sardinian club later apologised.

  • Ronaldo fined $22,000 by UEFA for celebration gesture

Ronaldo fined $22,000 by UEFA for celebration gesture

Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo has been fined 22,600 dollars by UEFA for appearing to make an obscene gesture while celebrating his side’s Champions League victory over Atletico Madrid.

The Portugal international was guilty of “improper conduct,’’ the control, ethics and disciplinary body of the European football organisation ruled on Thursday.

Ronaldo had gestured to his crotch following the final whistle after his hat-trick earned Juventus a 3-0 win over Atletico on March 12, which sent the Italians into the Champions League quarter-finals 3-2 on aggregate.

The gesture appeared to be a response to Atletico Coach Diego Simeone, who had celebrated in similar fashion during his team’s 2-0 win in the home leg.

Simeone was subsequently also fined 20,000 euros by UEFA.

Champions League: Ronaldo faces disciplinary hearing over goal celebration

Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo is facing disciplinary action for his celebration after one of the three goals he scored in last week’s 3-0 win over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.

UEFA said on Monday in Zurich that the Portuguese would face a hearing on Thursday for “improper conduct” during the last-16 second leg match, where Juventus completed a 3-2 aggregate win.

Ronaldo made a similar gesture to Atletico coach Diego Simeone, who celebrated his team’s opening goal in the first leg by turning to the crowd and putting his hands on his trousers.

Simeone was fined 20,000 euros (17,124 pounds) for the incident but escaped a touchline ban for the return match.

Juventus face Ajax Amsterdam in their quarter-final of the Champions League.

  • Juventus shares soar after Champions League win against Atletico

Juventus shares soared more than 20 per cent and were on track for their biggest one-day gain in five and half years on Wednesday.

The Italian soccer team overturned a two-goal deficit to defeat Atletico Madrid in a key Champions League match.

The victory on Tuesday night puts the Turin side through to the quarter finals of the competition, qualifying them for about a 10.5 million euro (£9 million) payment.

The cash would be on top of the 9.5 million euros the club received for getting through to the final 16 teams.

At 08:31 GMT, the shares were up 16 percent after hitting their highest since late January in early trading.

The shares were on track for their best day since October 2013.

  • Ronaldo hat-trick kicks Atletico out of Champions League

Ronaldo hat-trick kicks Atletico out of Champions League

Cristiano Ronaldo’s hat-trick helped Juventus to storm back from a 2-0 first leg deficit and beat Atletico Madrid 3-0 to earn a place in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday.

Ronaldo stole the show with two headers and a late penalty kick on an ecstatic night for the Turin side.

With Atletico Madrid packing their defence, Ronaldo made the crucial breakthrough in the 27th minute when he rose to head in Federico Bernardeschi’s cross at the far post.

The 34-year-old levelled the aggregate scores in the last-16 clash three minutes after halftime with another towering header, this time from Joao Cancelo’s cross.

With four minutes left, Bernardeschi powered into the Atletico area, and was pushed in the back by Angel Correa.

Ronaldo then blasted home the resulting penalty kick for his hat-trick, his team’s victory for a 3-2 aggregate win and passage into the quarter-finals.

  • UCL: Atletico overcome VAR setback to beat Juve

Atletico Madrid claimed a big victory over Juventus in the Champions League last 16 first leg thanks to two goals from their centre-backs at set-pieces.

Diego Simeone’s side were denied a penalty and an Alvaro Morata goal by the video assistant referee before they opened the scoring.

Jose Maria Gimenez pounced from eight yards after Morata’s header was blocked by Mario Mandzukic.

Diego Godin netted a half-volley, via a deflection off Cristiano Ronaldo.

Striker Costa and midfielder Thomas Partey of Atletico Madrid and Juve left-back Alex Sandro will all miss the second leg on Tuesday, 12 March after picking up their third bookings of the tournament.

Ronaldo – who is aiming to win a sixth Champions League and a fourth in a row – had Juve’s best chance as his powerful 35-yard free-kick was tipped over by Jan Oblak.

  • Juventus midfielder Khedira ruled out by heart problem

Juventus midfielder Sami Khedira has been diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat and will be sidelined while he undergoes treatment.

He will miss Wednesday’s Champions League tie at Atletico Madrid to be treated for atrial arrhythmia.

The condition causes an irregular and often abnormally fast heart rate and can lead to issues including dizziness, shortness of breath and tiredness.

Khedira, 31, has only played 15 times this season because of injuries.

“Sami Khedira remained in Turin for medical examinations, from which emerged the opportunity to perform an electrophysiological study and eventual treatment of an atrial arrhythmia which appeared today [Tuesday],” Juve said in a statement.

  • Serie A: Ronaldo scores as Juve go 14 points clear

Juventus moved 14 points clear at the top of Serie A with a routine victory over second-bottom Frosinone.

Paulo Dybala found the top corner from Cristiano Ronaldo’s pass to put the hosts ahead at the Allianz Stadium.

Leonardo Bonucci forced home following a goalmouth scramble, before Ronaldo scored his 21st goal of the season in all competitions.

Federico Bernardeschi was thwarted by Frosinone goalkeeper Marco Sportiello in stoppage time.

Second-placed Napoli face Torino at home on Sunday.

Massimiliano Allegri’s Juventus side travel to Atletico Madrid on Wednesday in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.
