Meanwhile, Mr Adewale Gomez, a Lagos PDP chieftain has clinched the party’s ticket to contest the Lagos Central Senatorial District seat in the  2023 general elections.

According to Mr Daniel Ochu-Baiye, Chairman of the PDP Electoral Committee/ Returning Officer for the senatorial primary election, Gomez scored 127 votes to defeat five other aspirants for the senatorial ticket.

Announcing the result on Tuesday evening at Obele Odan Community Hall in Surulere, the venue of the primaries, Ochu-Baiye, said that Mrs Olubanke Oniru, another contestant, scored 29 votes while Dr Adetokunbo Pearse polled 15 votes.

According to him, other contestants, Mrs Sunbo Onitiri, Dr Babs Akinlolu and Alhaji Rasheed Teslim-Balogun scored seven, three and one vote respectively.

“I hereby declare Adewale Gomez winner of this election being the aspirant with the highest number of votes,” Ochu-Baiye said.

Ochu-Baiye said a total of 182 ad hoc delegates drawn from five local government areas (Apapa, Eti-Osa, Surulere, Lagos Mainland and Lagos Island) that comprised the district,  voted at the primaries.

The returning officer, who commended the peaceful conduct of the delegates, described the election as very peaceful and free.

Reacting, Gomez said his emergence was a victory for the party to dislodge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2023.

Pledging to liaise with other contestants to form a winning team, Gomez said that the chances of PDP remained bright in Lagos state in the  2023 elections.

However, one of the aggrieved contestants, Pearse, alleged that most of the delegates that voted were not known to the party in the district but were brought in overnight.

“Evidently, what has transpired here today is that the three ad hoc delegates (from each ward) are people who are not real members of the PDP.

“If it were members of the party that voted in this election, I would have won the election. However, these three ad hoc delegates that have come in are all new.

“This is a shock, the people who voted are strangers to the PDP. They are not really members of our party they just came in. This is strange. I am sure party leaders will be shocked,” Pearse said.

He said that his next line of action would depend on the action of the electoral panel.

The exercise was conducted under heavy security presence and was monitored by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Recall that controversy trailed the PDP Lagos central senatorial primaries on  Monday when it was reported that Gomez had emerged the winner at a purported primary conducted at the same venue.

The PDP governorship hopeful spoke while addressing journalists at the Nigeria Union of Journalists’ Secretariat in Kaduna on Tuesday ahead of the party’s primary.

He maintained that he remained the only aspirant that could defeat the ruling party in the state in the race to the Sir Kashim Ibrahim Government House.

The former legislator noted that he was not disputing the facts that all the six other governorship aspirants of the platform were eminently qualified, but added that he was the only aspirant that could confront the state Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai.

In his words, “my aspiration is not a do or die affair. my aspiration is informed by the fact that the state is badly governed by the APC, and I have a list of agendas on the ground to solve the problems.

“I am out to unite the people of Kaduna State. I am a bridge that can unite the people of southern and northern parts of Kaduna who have been divided on so many fronts. I want to correct the inequality created by this APC government.

“I will also address the security challenges in the state. Kaduna has become a bad example as one of the most insecure states in Nigeria, with the government being helpless.

“There are 23 local government areas in Kaduna state and 21 local governments are under security siege. It is only in Kaduna North and Kaduna South that you sleep with your eyes closed.

“It has been 49 days since people have been kidnapped in the Abuja-Kaduna train and the victims are still in captivity.

“As governor, I will ensure that security is manned by experts who are well trained to address insecurity and not journalists.

Sani added, “Kaduna State people today are at the mercy of bandits who now decide who dies and who survives. How come there is no Banditry in most parts of the North but Kaduna, TheNewsGuru.com learnt.

He continued; “I want to address the security challenges in the state. I will not be a governor that will say the security of my people is in the hands of the FG, I will answer my name as the chief security officer.

“When leaders cannot protect you from bandits and terrorists, they have no business being govt. The people of Kaduna are at the mercy of bandits.

“Another major agenda I have is the reactivation of moribund textile industries in Kaduna and provide necessary employment to our people.

“I will also embark on infrastructural development which will not only be about the city. I will spread development across all the local government areas.

“Kaduna is presently under tyranny. Therefore, I will discontinue bad legacies of the APC but continue with local government election where even the opposition can will election.”

2023: My view is for the FG to be small in size – Atiku Abubakar

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said his view is for the Federal Government (FG) to be small in size.

Atiku made this known when he visited Kaduna in furtherance to his campaigns, seeking delegates and peoples support in actualising his ambition of becoming Nigeria’s president in the coming 2023 elections.

Abubakar, interacting with the Peoples Democratic Party’s delegates on Tuesday at the party’s secretariat, promised to address issues of power devolution to states and local government areas (LGAs).

He explained that the Federal Government was over burdened and too strong, which he believed by devolving power to states and LGAs, would ease its pressure and ensure effective administration.

“There is need for powers and resources to be devolved to states and LGAs for them to effectively do their work.

“My view is for the Federal Government to be small in size,” Abubakar said.

He promised to work with state governors, national and state assemblies that would be elected, to amend the constitution for more powers and resources to states and LGAs.

He also promised to end insecurity and revive Nigeria’s economy through resuscitating moribund industries.

He urged the delegates to support him in the primary elections.

On behalf of the PDP elders, former Governor of Kaduna State, Alhaji Ahmed Makarfi, said PDP believed Atiku had the ability to deliver Nigeria.

  • 2023 presidential primaries: Kaduna APC delegates back Amaechi

2023 presidential primaries: Kaduna APC delegates back Amaechi

Delegates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kaduna State on Sunday, pledged to give their votes to Presidential Aspirant and outgoing Minister of Transportation, Rt Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi.

The delegates made the decision two days after they had promised same to another visiting Presidential aspirant, stating that the earlier pledge by some of the delegates to that aspirant was a spur of the moment decision which no longer stands.

Addressing the delegates during the consultative visit by Amaechi to the State, Governor El Rufai said, “I told you when you made that pledge to Asiwaju that others may not come, because of what you have done. You made that choice without listening to anyone else. Today you have seen the difference. You’ve heard Amaechi, you’ve seen what he has done. And he has brought a very strong security team. So you know what will happen with our security if he is in charge.”

“What are you going to do? Who are you supporting now? You have a huge burden on you, and you must choose what is best for Kaduna and for Nigeria,” El Rufai said.

He further narrated his experience of the goodness and sterling leadership qualities of Amaechi, from when he was Governor till date, and why President Muhammadu Buhari has high regard for him. He described Amaechi as a friend who sticks closer than a brother, stating that he is trustworthy.

“Let me tell you my history with Governor Amaechi….When we started discussing with the G-7, the seven governors that wanted to defect to the APC, I was holding nocturnal meetings with Governor Amaechi and Governor Nyako of Adamawa State until we got five of them to move to our party, and that was the game changer. And for you to understand how difficult it is, imagine Governor Amaechi of Rivers State from the same South South with incumbent President Jonathan. He made the sacrifice to move to our party. It was a game changer. This is part of the reason why President Buhari loves Minister Amaechi till tomorrow.

“One time the SSS wanted to arrest me, that I wrote something. Governor Amaechi called and said I will take you there and I will not leave until they let you go, what did you do? He took me there in his car and stayed there until they let me go. Till tomorrow, my wife will never forget that. Amaechi is her favourite Nigerian.

“I’m putting this in context so you’ll understand. APC is one family and this primary is an internal competition. We don’t need to call each other names, but let us bring out the virtues and good character of everyone. It is up to you as delegates to make the best choice for Nigeria,” the Governor stated.

Governor El-Rufai then asked the delegates who is their choice for President, to which the delegates unanimously chorused “Amaechi” and “Dan Amanar”, the traditional Daura title of Amaechi

Speaking on behalf of the delegates, Speaker of the Kaduna State House of Assembly, Rt Hon. Yusuf Ibrahim Zailani, declared that Kaduna State delegates have reached the conclusion to give all their votes to the Dan Amanar Daura, Rt Hon Chibuike Amaechi.
