Alleged land fraud: Court remands lawmaker in EFCC custody

Justice Halilu Yusuf of an FCT high court, Maitama on Thursday, remanded Gabriel Zock (APC-Kaduna State) in the for custody of EFCC over alleged N185 million land fraud.

The EFCC, charged Zock, representing Kachia/Kagarko federal constituency of Kaduna state with two counts bordering on fraud.

Halilu gave the order of remands after EFCC counsel, Maryam Ahmed prayed the court to remand him until bail is granted to him.

In granting the prayer, Halilu adjourned the case until Feb. 16 for the hearing.

Earlier, the EFCC alleged that the lawmaker in 2015 in Abuja, under false pretext collected N150 million from Adeyemi Kamar for a plot of land in Guzape, District, Abuja.

EFCC also alleged that Zock collected N35 million from Kamar to facilitate and obtain title document of the land which he knew was false.

The anti-graft agency said the offence contravened the provisions of Section 1(1)(a) of the Advanced Fee Fraud and other fraud related offences Act, 2006 and punishable under Section 1(3)of the same Act.

    Zock however pleaded not guilty.

Mr O.S Adeyemi, whom the court asked to stand for Zock, who said his counsel was held up somewhere, made an oral application for his bail.

Ahmed, counsel for EFCC, opposed the bail, arguing that the defendant’s counsel should apply for the lawmaker’s bail in writing.

Buhari can’t defeat bandits before leaving office – Gumi

Fire spitting Islamic cleric, Dr. Ahmad Abubakar Gumi has said the Nigerian army should stop celebrating after killing one bandit leader because a new one will rise again.

The cleric also said that without any fear of contradiction that President Muhammadu Buhari would spend the next one year seven months without defeating bandits.

These were the postulations of the Kaduna Islamic cleric, Sheikh, Dr. Ahmad Gumi, when he spoke to newsmen today, in Kaduna, through his media consultant, Tukur Mamu.

Gumi advised Nigerians, in particular, the military to stop jubilating each time they kill bandit leader, saying that as they kill leader, another one would rise.

There is a particular forest we visited in Niger State. The whole of the settlement had been bombarded. This settlement has nothing to do with bandits. In fact, they showed us two wells full of innocent people, dead, casualties of these bombardments.

“That’s exactly what these bandits were telling us. They said whenever we hear the sound of an aircraft, we run to our caves and then run. If they will succeed in killing anybody, it is the small children, the wives or the cows.

“That’s their own testimony. So you can imagine a country where, for example, bandits would gather in a forest and be celebrating. when You don’t even have the intelligence to track them and eliminate them. Then who are you to say you will succeed in killing them?.

“For example, you killed Dogo Gide, a person more dreaded than him emerged. When they killed Buharin Daji, Turji emerged. So what’s the success there? Our military cannot succeed in crushing them all they cannot.”!

“I think, by now, we are authorities especially on issues that have to do with banditry. The genesis of the crisis, how to go about it, and then what we’ve actually seen on the ground. This is because nobody in Nigeria has seen what we saw.

“After some days, the abductors began to call my number and demanded for N15m. But we negotiated and I first gave them N2m.

“They collected the money in Rigasa area of Kaduna. Later, they called me again and demanded for another N1. 045m as the only condition to release my daughter. I did not argue. But I gave the money to them.

“However, after paying the ransom as demanded on the 19th of January, they called me to tell me they had killed my daughter. And they immediately switched off their phone.

“You see since from the initial stage, I was following her abductors and doing their bidding because of the fear of losing my daughter. Now, they have killed her.

“I know those who abducted her and killed her. They are around us. I have strong evidence. I have told the police. And they are on it. In fact, the suspects have been arrested,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Kaduna Police Command has confirmed the incident.

The Command’s spokesman, ASP Muhammed Jalige, said investigations were ongoing on the incident.

But Jalige could not immediately confirm the arrest of the suspect.

  • El-Rufai knees before Buhari, begs president to be aggressive in “sending bandits to their Creator”

El-Rufai knees before Buhari, begs president to be aggressive in “sending bandits to their Creator”

President Muhammadu Buhari has met behind closed door with Gov. Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State in the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Tuesday.

Speaking to State House correspondents on the outcome of the meeting, the governor said he updated the president on security development in Kaduna state where about 40 villagers were killed by terrorists three days ago.

The governor, who was accompanied by the State Commissioner for Internal Security, Samuel Aruwan, stated that he asked for the intervention of the President for more deployment of security forces and comprehensive operations.

According to him, the security agencies have been overstretched as they are involved in various operations across the country, calling for urgent presidential intervention to check the activities of bandits and other criminals in Kaduna state

He said: “So, you have to understand the limitations that they face before you conclude that they are not doing enough. They are doing a lot. But is it enough? Certainly not, much more needs to be done.

“But can they do more with the number of policemen they have and the number of soldiers? I don’t know. We need to ramp up recruitment in the Nigerian Police, we need to ramp up recruitment in the Nigerian armed forces.

“We have too few number and our armed forces are overstretched. They are operating in several states, about 32, 33 states the last time we checked, and how many are they?

“So, we must understand the constraint that they face and sympathized with them.

“But with the acquisition of more advance equipment from Jordan, China, Turkey and the United States, we expect that the kinetic capabilities of our armed forces will be greatly improved.

“So, we hope to see the end of this insecurity.”

According to the governor, there is nothing like repentant bandits and that the state’s policy is to dispatch the terrorists attacking innocent people to their creator to answer for their crimes against humanity.

“There is nothing like repentant terrorists. The only repentant bandit is the one that is dead. Our intention in the state is to kill them (terrorists), let them go and see God,” he maintained.

On whether there is not intelligence to go ahead of the bandits, he said: “Yes, we receive security reports, we know a lot about the bandits and where they are and their activities.

“But you must understand that the intelligence has to be acted upon. And if the security forces are unwilling or unable to reach the locations where these bandits are, then there is nothing we can do as a state government.

“Federal security forces are not under our direct control. We support them, we work with them, the intelligence is being provided, but the truth of the matter is that our military and police are very few in number and they are overstretched.”

The governor also observed that care has to be taken in dealing with bandits to avoid collateral damage to innocent civilians.

“Even if you know where the bandits are, you don’t want to go and bomb all of them because they may have civilians in custody.

“You may have collateral damage that you may not want to handle. And without the declaration of bandits as terrorists, it might even be referred to as abuse of their human rights.”

He, however, noted that the recent declaration by the Federal High Court describing the bandits as terrorists had opened the way to fight them without limits.

“So, no one will be dragged to the international court because you killed bandits. No,” he said.

He said despite the insecurity in Kaduna, the state had continued to attracted investments even though it could have been better.

“Kaduna state is a huge state. We have 46,000 square kilometers. I joke with my colleagues from the South East, Kaduna state alone can feed the five states of the southeast two and half times.

“It’s a huge state. So, the fact that there is insecurity in one part does not mean there’s insecurity everywhere. It’s not Lagos, it’s not a small place at all.

“Yes, we’ve had investment summit and they have been very successful.

“In the last five years, we have attracted nearly three billiondollars in investments in spite of all these stories about insecurity because investors know that large parts of Kaduna state are quite safe, they are safe as anything,” he stated.
