Insecurity: Federal College of Forestry Mechanisation, Afaka, Kaduna State announces plans to relocate institution

The management of the Federal College of Forestry Mechanisation, Afaka in Kaduna State has concluded plans to temporarily relocate the institution.

Dr Usman Muhammad, who is the Provost of the college, announced this on Monday in Kaduna while addressing reporters in the company of top management staff of the school, as well as the students and their parents.

He noted that the institution would be relocated to a temporary place where normal academic activities would continue until further notice.

Muhammad explained that the decision became necessary because the present location of the college in Igabi Local Government Area of the state was no longer safe at the moment.

He gave an assurance that the management would provide vehicles for easy transportation of the students amid tight security.

As a way of compensation, he also announced that the school fees of the 37 students who were initially kidnapped by bandits had been waived for the courses they were pursuing at the college.

Meanwhile a man whose two children were among those abducted, Friday Sani, commended the management’s decision.

According to him, relocating the school to a temporary place is a good idea considering that the college is vulnerable to further attacks due to lack of adequate security.

On their part, two of the freed students, Kauna Daniel and Stephen Shuani, decried that most of them were still nursing post-traumatic stress.

They demanded more action from the government, including placing them on scholarships and providing adequate security in their school to enable them finish their education unhindered.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that bandits invaded the school in March and kidnapped 37 students – an incident that led to the subsequent closure of the school.

The students were later released in three batches in a space of one month – five on April 5, five on April 8, and 29 on March 5.

Normalcy returns to Kaduna as NLC calls off strike

Normalcy has returned to Kaduna after the Nigerian Labour Union (NLC) called off its five-day warning strike to protest the sack of over 4,000 workers by the state government.

Banks, schools, markets, and other businesses, including public offices, have been open for business.

Also, petrol stations and cooking gas companies which were hitherto closed due to the strike have been open with long queues as motorists and residents struggle to buy the products.

Electricity was also restored by the Transmission Companies of Nigeria and power has been restored to some parts of the state by the Kaduna Electric Distribution Company.

However, other areas like Sabon Tasha, Unguwan Boro, Mahuta, Lagos Streets among other areas of the metropolis are still waiting for the Kaduna Electric to restore supply as at the time of filing this report.

NLC had on Monday begun the five-day warning strike, a development that paralysed activities in the state, with governance and business owners counting huge economic losses.

But on the third day, the President of NLC, Mr Ayuba Wabba announced the suspension of the strike to pave way for negotiation as requested by the Federal Government.

“We will honour the meeting scheduled for tomorrow at 11 a.m. The labour leaders in Kaduna will also be present because they have the substance of the issues in the state.

‘The National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the NLC would be held at the Labour House in Abuja on May 21, to review the warning action that was prosecuted in Kaduna state and determine further action.

Residents of the state have commended the federal government for intervening to end the disagreement between the labour unions and the state government.

One of them, Mrs Kubai Philip, who said she lost all perishable and other food items in the freezer due to power blackout, expressed joy that the strike was called off.

“Most of us incurred huge losses but thanks to the federal government intervention, our lives have been restored.

“Now that the strike has been called off, we pray the warring parties will reach a resolution because we will not want another strike again,” she said.

Another resident, Mr Ishaya Ayuba, noted that dialogue was the best option in addressing labour disputes, pointing that the masses suffer the most during strike action.

The suspension, the NLC President, Ayuba Wabba was to honour the invitation of the Federal Government on Thursday to mediate in the dispute.

Minister of Labour and Employment Chris Ngige waded into the ongoing face-off between the Kaduna State government and labour unions by inviting both parties to a reconciliation meeting.

The meeting scheduled to hold at the Ministry of Labour and Employment in the Federal Secretariat, Abuja is to be attended by Gov. Nasir El Rufai and top officials of the State as well Wabba and top NLC leaders.

BREAKING: El-Rufai challenges FG, threatens to boycott peace meeting

The Kaduna state governor Nasir El-rufai said “No official of Kaduna State will go to Abuja for any meeting with FGN or NLC when the citizens of the State have no electricity”

Governor El-rufai disclosed this through his media aide Muyiwa Adekeye shortly after the Nigerian Labour Congress(NLC) suspended it’s statewide shutdown in Kaduna on Wednesday evening.

The suspension of the strike was for the NLC to attend a nagotiation meeting the federal government fixed between the Kaduna State government and the NLC.

But governor El-rufai is threatening not to attend the negitiation except all dysfuctional amenities are activated in the state.

    In the governor’s words;

“We hold the FGN responsible for inability to asset its ownership rights over TCN. No electricity, no meeting. – @elrufai

The Kaduna State Government is yet to see evidence that the NLC is backing off from its campaign of economic and social sabotage against the people of the State.

Electric power is yet to be restored, after it was shutdown at dawn on Sunday, 16th May 2021, in brazen violation of the laws protecting essential services and infrastructure. That action removed any basis for state government officials to meet the NLC last Sunday. Denying our people electricity about 18 hours to the advertised commencement of their organised sabotage was akin to putting a gun on the government’s head. Government has a lawful duty not to indulge blackmail.

Restoring electricity is vital to relieving some of the pain that needless acts of lawlessness have inflicted on our people. The unimpeded provision of essential services is vital to civilised order. Those who have disrupted it should promptly reverse themselves, not expect that it will be a matter for negotiation, much less being viewed as a precondition. KDSG will not participate in such a negotiation or countenance one whilst our people are still being denied their right to electricity.”

APC Governors urge Gov. El-Rufai to return to negotiation table with NLC

The Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) has urged Gov. Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State to return to negotiation table with Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to prevent the ongoing strike from crippling the state’s economy.

Gov. Abubakar Bagudu of Kebbi state and Chairman of the forum said this in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.

“The PGF has been following unfolding development between NLC and Kaduna state government over the issue of rightsising local government employees with deep concerns.

“Noting all the challenges facing all our states, especially given dwindling revenue, we appeal to all patriotic Nigerians, including the NLC, to demonstrate more commitment toward engaging governments at all levels to address problems.

“This is not the time for muscle flexing,” Bagudu said, saying that Nigerians were already overstretched with many challenges.

“At this critical point of our democratic journey, there could not be limits to engagement between all governments and citizens.”

He said that every step must be taken to resolve the face up between the state government and NLC.

“We appeal to NLC leadership to recognise that the burden of leadership is more about responding to challenges based on the honest disposition of correcting past mistakes.

“As progressive governors, we share the vision of Kaduna state government of reforming all our local government councils to make them more efficient and consequently the pivot of critical development initiatives.

“At the same time, we want to appeal to the state government under the leadership of our colleague, Malam Nasir El-Rufai to take all necessary steps to ensure the resolution of all disagreements in the larger interest of citizens in Kaduna state,” he said.

Bagudu expressed confidence that both the state government and NLC would resolve all outstanding issues and restore industrial harmony in the state.

ASUU joins NLC warning strike in Kaduna State

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Kaduna State University Chapter, has directed its members to join the ongoing warning strike by public sector workers in Kaduna State.

The ASUU Chairperson, Dr Peter Adamu gave the directive in a circular to the members of the union, issued in Kaduna on Monday.

Adamu said: “I am directed by the National Secretariat of our great union through the Zonal office Kano, for members to join the warning strike.

“Members should remember that ASUU is an affiliate of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the principal officers of ASUU were part of the NLC National Executive Council that took the decision on the strike action.

“Also, members that violate the strike action must note that the union will not be there for them when the wrath of the governor falls on them.

“We must unite for a just cause because injury to one is injury to all.”

NLC National President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, said at the five-day strike action that it would run its full course unless the state government attended to the workers grievances.

Some of the grievances included the recent sack of 7,000 local government workers and refusal of the state government to settle the entitlements of about 50, 000 it disengaged from service from 2017 to date.

Government activities in the state were completely paralised on the first day of the strike on Monday, with banks, schools, hospitals, water, electricity, rail and air services shut.

NLC begins 5-day warning strike in Kaduna State

Labour unions began a five-day warning strike in Kaduna State on Monday.

NLC National President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, said at the flag-off of the action that it would run its full course unless the state government attended to the workers grievances.

He said the national leadership of the NLC had been informed that the grievances included the sacking of 7,000 workers from local governments in the state.

“We are also aware that in the Primary Health Care Development Agency, 1,700 workers were sacked.

“All these are happening in the face of exorbitant increment in tuition fees , high cost of living and other uncalled for actions in ministries and agencies in the state,’’ he said.

“Fuel stations, hospitals, banks, the railway, and airport, among others have been closed because we must take our destiny in our hands if the situation in Kaduna State and in Nigeria at large cannot change.

“We cannot accept the bitter pills; we are here in Kaduna today because the labour law in Nigeria says before you can declare redundancy, labour shall be consulted and we were never consulted.

`The governor said he has consulted the National Union of Local Government Employees, but the union is here with us; we want to tell the world that a lot of information from government is false.

“We have the right to protect peacefully without being intimidated or harassed.

“The governor should go after criminals, especially kidnappers and bandits terrorising the state and not workers who are earning their legitimate wages,’’ Wabba added.

A commissioner in Kaduna State who featured on a national television programme on Monday said the figure of sacked workers the NLC was quoting was incorrect.

The commissioner also said majority of retrenched workers did not have requisite qualifications to hold office and were given ample notice to upgrade their qualifications.

He said also that many of them had been trained for other jobs preparatory to their disengagement from public service.

Part of the protest was a planned march by leaders and unionists from the NLC’s office, through the streets of Kaduna to the state’s House of Assembly.

Pro-Elrufai group begins protest over NLC’s 5-day strike in Kaduna State

Following the commencement of the five-day strike by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) in Kaduna on Sunday, a group of youths with no defined name have come out in hundreds protesting against the strike action in solidarity with the Kaduna State government.

The NLC and its various affiliates had planned and have began its strike for five days from May 16 in Kaduna State. The strike is in response to reform plans by the state government, including the recent dismissal of workers. Various groups of state workers, including those in the electricity, health, and aviation sectors, plan to participate.

So far, the Kaduna Electricity distribution Company have taken the lead by ensuring a total blackout from 12midnight on Sunday.

Aviation workers at Kaduna International Airport (KAD) plan to withdrawal services from 00:01 May 17.

The work stoppage is unlikely to affect emergency services and COVID-19 care.

However, disruptions to routine health services at government hospitals and health facilities may occur due to understaffing.

Increased demand for care could also disrupt services at private facilities.

Disruptions to electricity supply or maintenance of electricity infrastructure are possible.

Disruptions to KIA flight operations are likely while general public transport services may also be disrupted.

State services, generally, could be impacted.

Striking workers may participate in protests near government buildings, particularly in the state capital, Kaduna.

Police will almost certainly deploy to any strike-related protest and clashes are possible if demonstrators fail to heed orders to disperse.
