Kaduna pensioner burns down his house to prevent estranged wife from returning

A Kaduna based pensioner, Musa Aga, has shocked his neighbours in the Gonin-Gora area of popular LEA Primary School in Kaduna by burning down his two-bedroom flat to prevent his estranged wife, with whom he had been separated for over 20 years, from returning to live with him.

His children, who had insisted on their mother returning to live with their father despite Musa’s insistence to the contrary, had forcefully broken into the house through the roof to bring back into the house, the former Mrs Aga’s belongings.

Musa, who had retired from Kaduna State Ministry of Rural and Community Development in 2015, is from Kagoro in the Southern part of Kaduna State.

Narrating the reason why he burnt down his house, Musa said, “I divorced my wife for about 20 years now. But now the children are forcing me to stay with their mother. But I said no because when the elders and pastors of our church pleaded with her to come back to me she had earlier said no.

“But now she said she wants to come back to me. I also said no but the children are forcing me saying that their mother must stay with me. They brought her and her property to meet me at my house. They removed the roof and the ceiling to enter my house. That’s why I was annoyed and I didn’t like it, so I set my house on fire. This is the match box, that I used. So let bygones be bygones.”

Asked if the house was built from his gratuity, he said, “Yes, it was from my gratuity. But because of the annoyance with my family, I decided to burn it down. Let bygones be bygones.

When asked if the children will not feel bad about his actions he said, “Yes, I want them to feel it that’s why I did it. They want to force me to stay with their mother but I don’t want to. They said it is their father’s house, but now their father’s house is no more there. Do you see why I burnt it?

Musa when said that such actions are very rare with people of his age who normally would want to keep legacy for their children to inherit, when they are no more, he said, “Yes but when they are not good you don’t keep anything for them, except if they are good and they listen to you. They are not good.

“If they are good can they force their father to stay with their mother like that? I trained them for them to look after me when I grow old but now they are treating me badly.

Efforts by the neighborhood to put out the inferno failed as the fire was fuelled by the powerful harmattan breeze.

The breeze heightened the fear of close neighbors that their houses might be affected, hence they concentrated and controlled it against spreading.

While some were battling to control the fire, emergency local youthful village scavengers were busy gathering burnt zincs, metal and iron scraps, even as some were onlookers, some commentators, some wailers.

One of the daughters was crying because of her credentials and according to insiders, they didn’t envisage the setting of the house on fire.

It was also learnt that one of the daughters was alleged to have insisted that the father must accept her dowry even though he didn’t accept the dowry of the other daughters, therefore their mother must return to their father’s house and accept her dowry.

Sources told Saturday Independent that a woman in her 40s was overheard saying that the ex-wife was allegedly flirting since she knew Musa was struggling to build the house and was living in rented apartment for many years.

Quit notice: Fulani leaders dispute 4000 herders left Oyo for Kaduna

Some Fulani leaders at Ladduga grazing reserve in Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna state, together with other stakeholders, have disputed the 4,000 figure published by the media, saying that only 107 herders from Oyo state relocated to Kaduna.

Malam Ardo Goge, Leader of the Fulanis at Ladduga, told some Peace builders and Journalists, who visited four of the new settlements of the Fulanis from Oyo state, due to the quit notice given to them, that only 107 of them relocated with their children, women and elderly.

Goge explained that the returnees were initially from the community before they left for the South, saying: “They left the area eight years ago to the South in order to feed their animals and now they are back.”

According to him, the returnees were peace loving herders, with a good record of promoting peaceful co-existence, even before they left Ladduga community to the South, saying that no herder would arrive Ladduga without the knowledge of the community leaders.

He challenged journalists and NGOs to prove that over 4000 herders had arrived Ladduga as earlier published in the media, saying that the media should always cross check their facts before posting their news, to avoid unnecessary suspicions.

“These herders were our own people and we have been living with them in peace and harmony for many years, before they migrated to the south, and now they are back due to threat of attack. They are not foreigners, they are Kaduna state indigenes, it is the crisis that brought them back.

“we have given them place to stay and we have cleared the bush for them to build new homes with their families,

‘”But they lack many things like social amenities, clothes, foods as they came into the state without their normal cows and other animals we are used to seeing them with”

Dr Saleh Momale, a former Permanent secretary of the Kaduna state peace commission, who is also a resident of the community, said he had been part of the fact finding mission to Ladduga community.

Momale said that since the report that over 4000 Fulani herdsmen arrived Ladduga community, he had spent a whole day in the forest with some Fulani Leaders moving round to ascertain the number of those Fulanis that relocated from the south.

“From the facts and figures, we only received the report of only 107 Fulani migrants from the South, who were originally Fulanis from the area that came back home” he said.

He stated that some of the Fulani herdsmen complained of lack of shelter, food and warming cloths against the harmattan.

Ibrahim Abdullahi, one of the returnees, reiterated their needs to include food and shelter, as their children were sleeping in open spaces and the ”weather is really cold”.

He called on Non-Governmental organizations (NGOs), Civil society organizations, NEMA, SEMA, The Red Cross, Interfaith mediation centre and public-spirited individuals to come to their aid.

Abdullahi also appealed to Miyetti Allah and all Fulani organizations to come to their rescue as they were really in need of help.

  • Kaduna Govt announces measures to stem COVID-19 without lockdown

Kaduna Govt announces measures to stem COVID-19 without lockdown

The Kaduna State Government has announced measures to help stem Covid-19 infections through voluntary mass compliance, and thereby avert a lockdown.

The Covid-19 prevention measures were announced yesterday at live media chat hosted by Governor Nasir El-Rufai and Deputy Governor Dr. Hadiza Balarabe. The event also feature Commissioner of Health Dr. Amina Mohammed-Baloni, Commissioner of Education Dr. Shehu Usman Muhammad and the Commissioner for Business, Innovation and Technology Idris Nyam.

During the media chat, the state government confirmed that the Covid-19 infection rates were averaging 30% of samples tested, and yielding about 100 new cases daily. If not stemmed, such infection rates will easily overrun all the isolation facilities and hospitals.

The government therefore called for collective action with citizens to curb the infections without having to resort to resort to extraordinary measures like a lockdown. The government believes that mass compliance with Covid-19 prevention protocols should suffice to reduce the rate of infections.

Responding to a question about the prospect of a lockdown, Malam Nasir El-Rufai said that the government is counting on the cooperation of citizens to make a lockdown unnecessary.

“Our immediate instinct is not to impose a lockdown, with all its dislocation, disruptions and challenge to the ability of people to pursue livelihoods.

“We are calling on all our citizens to join us to fight Covid-19 and save lives without having a lockdown. We think there are lots of simpler things citizens and businesses can do that can help reduce the spread of the disease.

“We are counting on the cooperation of our citizens, religious leaders, the business community, transporters and other stakeholders in a collective effort to stop Covid-19. We can do it by voluntary compliance.”

The governor said that wearing facemasks in public becomes mandatory from 17 December 2020.

Dr. Hadiza Balarabe, who chairs the State Covid-19 Taskforce, listed the preventive measures to which citizens and businesses are expected to comply. She noted that most of these measures were agreed with various stakeholder groups including religious leaders, businesses, transporters and market unions prior to the easing of the first lockdown in June 2020.

As from 17 December 2020, the following measures are in effect in Kaduna State:

It is mandatory to wear facemasks outside the house.

    Large gatherings are prohibited.

Businesses must provide thermometers for temperature checks, and sanitisers or hand-washing equipment and physical distancing measures within all facilities.

Places of worship must enforce facemasks, provide sanitisers and ensure physical distancing. The number of worshippers will be capped. Congregational worship should not exceed one hour.

    Transport operators must reduce capacity to not more than two passengers per row and not more than 50% of capacity;

    Supermarkets and providers of personal services such as hair dressing and barbing salons can remain open, but service providers and customers must use facemasks and limit crowds;

Hotels can remain open, but their restaurants and bars can offer only room service.

Event centres, Night clubs, Gyms and Bars and Lounges are to close until further notice.

Restaurants are restricted to takeaway services only.

The Kaduna State Government appeals for collective compliance with these measures to enable the state tackle the new wave of Covid-19 infections while allowing citizens to safely pursue their livelihoods.

Noting that the success of these measures will depend on the cooperation of all citizens and the degree of compliance with the protocols, the government appealed to all residents to see Covid-19 prevention as a vital personal responsibility and to act accordingly.
