Southern Kaduna elders’ forum endorses Hadiza Balarabe

The Southern Kaduna Elders Forum (SOKEFO) has endorsed the choice of Dr. Hadiza Balarabe as Kaduna State Deputy Governorship candidate for the 2019 elections.

TheNewsGuru (TNG) reports the elders’ forum made the endorsement in a statement signed by Rev. Musa Kokwain.

The statement reads: “We the elders of Southern Kaduna Forum wish to call on all our people from this Zone to exercise restraint and caution especially after the announcement of Dr. Hadiza Balarabe as the running mate of the Kaduna State Governor for the 2019 elections.

“We have observed some divisive statements emanating from some quarters since the news broke out and reiterate the fact that all hands must be on deck to desist from this religious dichotomy that is being propagated in Southern Kaduna.

“It is unfortunate and depressing when some of us stood up and formed this group in 1995 to advance and advocate for Gurara State (Southern Kaduna) with different memoranda at the National Constitution Conference during the Sani Abacha Military administration.

“We were a group of passionate indigenous people of Southern Kaduna. We had in us Christians and Muslims from Southern Kaduna, we had the Bajjus, the Kajes, Numana’s, Kataf, Chonga’s etc, all united for the common good of our vision of a Gurara State.

“It will be very selfish of us if we persecute Dr. Hadiza to alienate her from her ancestral home of Southern Kaduna of denying her this opportunity particularly because of her faith.

“When we pushed for this onerous cause of a united prosperous Gurara State in 1995, we had the least of worries that we will be confronted with this petty level of divisiveness, non-tolerance.

“If we had gotten Gurara State, will we drive the Muslims and traditionalist out of Gurara State?

“We must emulate our brothers from the Southwest in our political engagement and direction if we truly wish to advance as a people.

“Dr. Hadiza Balarabe is a bonafide Southern Kaduna indigene from Sanga and we will not deny her the opportunity to serve in whatever capacity the Governor deems fit.

“As a medical doctor how many of us ask her what her religion is before meeting her in the hospital?

“If we didn’t play politics or religion with our health why shouldn’t she be a Deputy Governor if elected?

    “That will be hypocritical.

“We the Southern Kaduna Elders Forum after careful deliberations hereby endorse the Deputy Governorship candidacy of our daughter Dr. Hadiza Balarabe for the 2019 elections.

  • Has the religion of Kaduna’s Deputy Governor brought peace?

    Adams Lawal Magaji

One of the features of General Ibrahim Babangida’s endless transition programme was the insertion of religion as a factor in political configurations. It was couched as balance, promoting the concept that if a Christian is at the top of a ticket, then he must have a Muslim deputy and vice versa.

Babangida went on to appoint Pamela Sadauki as Deputy Governor to Colonel Tanko Ayuba, then military governor of Kaduna State. This forced the politicians who were seeming the office of governor of Kaduna to ‘balance’. Dabo Lere, who won election as governor of Kaduna State in 1991, had a young James Bawa Magaji as deputy governor. That was the first time religion became an issue in the guber line-up.

Since then Kaduna State has had several Christian deputy governors: Stephen Shekari, Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa. Nuhu Bajoga and Barnabas Yusuf Bala, the incumbent. When circumstances propelled Yakowa to the governorship, he named a Muslim. Ramalan Yero as deputy. In December 2014,Nasir El-Rufai named Barnabas Yusuf Bala as his running mate.

Has this configuration of Muslim and Christian stemmed violence, united the state and drawn people together towards a respect for individual rights and a sense of common purpose? Let us present the evidence so that the reader can judge.

James Bawa Magaji was Deputy Governor when the 1992 crises in Zangon-Kataf happened. That crisis was triggered by the “indigenous” Kataf attacking and murdering the Hausa/Fulani “settlers” of Zango town who have been there for centuries. The report of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry noted the disrespect with which James Bawa Magaji was treated by the Katafs when he intervened to try to resolve the differences.

Stephen Shekari was Deputy Governor when the Sharia riots of 2000 took so many lives. Zamfara, which started the Sharia matter, stayed calm as Kaduna burnt.

Patrick Yakowa was Governor when the 2011 riots happened. He was still in office when brutal attacks and massacres were visited on several communities in southern Kaduna afterwards. Yakowa acted to stem the killings. But his successor did not follow up. So Nuhu Bajoga’s Christian identity did not save communities in Attakad and other places from murderous violence.

Barnabas Yusuf Bala (Bantex) has the misfortune of being labelled a traitor, but he has sometimes been embraced as a southern Kaduna Christian. The tale was woven that he beat up El-Rufai in defence of southern Kaduna interests. He was a tagged a traitor for not resigning or denouncing the government during the violent conflict that raged in parts of southern Kaduna in late 2016 and early 2017. When Bantex had to go for urgent medical attention abroad, the same people said falsely that El-Rufai did not allow him to attend the hospital of his choice.

It is clear that having a Christian as Deputy Governor has not advanced peace or stability in Kaduna State. Rather it has produced the perverse phenomenon of people using religion as a bargaining chip. It is freezing people in identity politics rather than moving the state towards one where it is the quality and character of a person that counts.

There are Christians in every part of Kaduna State, and there are Muslims everywhere too. Pamela Sadauki is Hausa-Fulani and Christian from the northern axis of the state.

Hadiza Balarabe is a Muslim from the southern axis of the state.

Why can’t she be Deputy Governor?

  • Why Hadiza Balarabe is Gov. El-Rufai’s running mate for 2nd term

Why Hadiza Balarabe is Gov. El-Rufai’s running mate for 2nd term

Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has announced the selection of Dr. Hadiza Balarabe as his running mate for the 2019 general election.

TheNewsGuru (TNG) reports the choice of Dr. Hadiza Balarabe as running mate continues Malam Nasir El-Rufai’s deliberate policy of promoting women.

There are five female commissioners in his 14-person cabinet, a feat not attained even by governors that had much larger cabinets. This is the first time in the history of Kaduna State that a major political party will select a woman as running mate.

The incumbent Deputy Governor, Arc. Barnabas Yusuf Bala, opted to go to the National Assembly and has since emerged as the APC’s candidate for the southern Kaduna senatorial district.

Dr. Hadiza Balarabe is the current Executive Secretary of the Kaduna State Primary Health Care Development Agency, a position she has held since February 2016.

In that role she has overseen the Kaduna State Government’s programme to revitalise and strengthen primary health care as the core of health service delivery in the state.

Under her watch, the state is renovating and equipping 255 primary health centres with tools to assist better antenatal services and safer delivery. The agency has also helped expand vaccine coverage to protect children across the state.

Prior to joining the Kaduna State Government, Dr. Hadiza Balarabe was Director of Public Health in the FCT. She studied Medicine at the University of Maiduguri, and graduated in 1988. She was a Senior Registrar at the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital before joining the services of the FCT in 2004.

Dr. Hadiza Balarabe, who was born in 1966, is from Sanga local government which is located in the southern Kaduna senatorial district.

  • Kaduna state government and the Gonin Gora challenge

    By Hassan Kato

Gonin Gora community which is situated on the outskirts of Kaduna metropolis,is the gateway to Niger State, Abuja the Federal Capital Territory and in deed to the Southern States,as it’s to people traveling to Northern towns and States like Zaria, Kano,Kebbi, Sokoto.

Unfortunately it has acquired a contemptible reputation as a graveyard for innocent road travelers – Christians and Muslims who get caught up in crisis that they know absolutely nothing about. We must from the very outset agree that the reputation of a killing field is not a badge of honour that any community should or can proudly wear. It’s a badge stained with blood, that good people should distance themselves from.

On Friday last week the governor of Kaduna State Mallam Nasir El-Rufai on his way back from Abuja ran into a blockage mounted by the notorious “Gonin Gora boys”. In his characteristic manner he dislodged the mob which was already poised for real time action- the killing of innocent travelers to the acclaim of the would be victims.

Nasir El-Rufai stopping the Gonin Gora boys from attacking travelers no doubt helped in the management of the crisis, which would have spiraled out of control if the merchants of crisis had something to hold on to.

In kaduna State conflicts usually gets worse when either side embarks on reprisals and counter reprisals. In fact more people are killed in reprisal attacks, than in the initial attacks, which is why the effort of the governor in dismantling the road block deserves huge commendation.

But for that singular action, the Rigasa ,Western Bye Pass counterparts of the Gonin Gora boys in the business of attacking innocent people would have found some justification for their own actions.

The debate on Gonin Gora and indeed other flash points, which by the way was long over due, was triggered by an innocuous statement made by the governor during an interview with the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria(FRCN) Kaduna.

Reproduced below is the transcription of Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s statement on Gonin Gora which some certified “trouble finders” have attempted to twist to suit their mischief.

He said and I quote “We don’t have any problem in Gonin Gora now. We will take appropriate measures to ensure that Gonin Gora is not a threat to Kaduna State and the people passing through that place. I am calling on the residents of Gonin Gora to call the youths of the areas to order and to ensure that they are law abiding, if not I can evacuate the entire community.

“We will not allow a situation where youths will block the road and be killing innocent. We will station security personnel to be patrolling the area, but they must stop that habit otherwise, we cannot allow that community to be lawless and a threat.

“They are not beyond the Government to handle. I am therefore, cautioning the people to be law abiding. But let me assure all commuters coming to or passing through Kaduna that Gonin Gora is safe. We have drafted soldiers and police to be in Gonin Gora permanently. In addition, there are other security personnel on patrol to control any act of lawlessness. May God grant us peace”.

Clearly there was no place in the interview where the governor unequivocally stated that he would demolish Gonin Gora. Precisely what the governor said was “I can evacuate the entire community”. The operative word is “i can” and not “i will”. And that even if he “would” evacuate Gonin Gora it would be more of a last resort occasioned by the failure of other steps, for instance the failure of the various engagement programmes aimed at peaceful coexistence.

In the same interview the governor had also announced a 24 hour security patrol of the area to ensure guaranteed free passage of people and goods. This clearly proves that the governor definitely hadn’t concluded abi nitio on the of evacuation of Gonin Gora without looking at other options of addressing the problem that is a nightmare to everyone including the residents of the community who are at their mercy.

Those who have made strident efforts at twisting the governor’s statement to mean the destruction of Gonin Gora , which he didn’t say, have in the process of defending the indefensible admitted to an incontrovertible fact that Gonin Gora is a killing field. Their anger is not that it has acquired that notoriety, but the failure of the governor to mention the other killing fields like Kawo and the Western Bye Pass , where like Gonin Gora innocent travelers are hacked down whenever the people of Kaduna State decide to hold their festival of stupidity.

What the “defenders” of Gonin Gora ought to have done was to first denounce and condemn the actions of the hoodlums, who in real terms endanger every Christian who must travel through several areas dominated by Muslims to their places of work or business.

They clearly fail to make the connections that “if our boys” kill Muslims at Gonin Gora, that “their boys” would retaliate in their areas of strength – a case of mutually assured destruction. In 2005 when Christian leaders without prompting denounced the provocative cartons by the Danish cartoonist, the move helped avert crisis in kaduna State which occurred in other states where Muslims protested against the portrayal of Prophet Mohammed.

Working together is what Kaduna needs to resolve the seemingly intractable conflicts that diverts attention from the positives. There is the need for honest conversations and pragmatic solutions to these conflicts, which are big blots on both religions.

There is this mistaken belief that responsibility for ensuring peaceful coexistence rests squarely on the shoulders of the government alone and the rest of the society spectators in a film that they in fact produced. The good people of Kaduna State must jettison the delusion that the responsibility for peaceful coexistence rests on Nasir El-Rufai alone and contribute their quota towards an enduring peace.

How can the government for instance stop a people who at the slightest provocation are at each other’s throat? How can a quarrel in a market lead to the kind of crisis that could have engulfed the entire state , but for the deft management of the crisis ? Where were the elders and men of goodwill at the market. Why couldn’t they intervene before the matter got out of hands? Questions and questions, which the people must provide answers to.

The elites must hide their heads in shame because the hoodlums have confirmed that they run the town, with their time tested formula. They have demonstrated this time without number that they can shut down kaduna State whenever they want, kill, loot and manipulate religion to cover their heinous crimes. And like fools adherents of both faiths will queue behind them.

Is it not a shame that hooligans locked down Kaduna, that they forced all the powerful movers and shakers of Nigeria either in doors or scampering to Abuja for safety? And unless we begin to act in concert against them, they will continue to set us up against each other. Like the governor rightly observed ” the hoodlums exploited the situation to engage in criminal activity and to violate the rights of other citizens”.

Moving forward the key priority is the creation of jobs for the millions of graduates and skills acquisition for those that lack education. Unless these hoodlums have a future and unless they are gainfully employed do they will continue to hunt us. The kaduna State government must ensure the criminals who perpetuated all manner of atrocities are punished according to the law as a deterrent. They must learn to use peaceful and lawful means to resolve differences.

To the “defenders” of Gonin Gora, remember while you defend Gonin Gora, that what Kawo is to you as a Christian, that that’s what Gonin Gora is to the Muslim.

Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir Ahmad el-Rufai on Friday reinstated the 24-hour curfew on Kaduna metropolis and environs, as well as Kasuwan Magani, Kajuru, Kateri and Kachia.

“This is a struggle between good, decent, law abiding people trying to uphold the peace and criminals who want to divide and destroy.
“It is not a struggle between religious or ethnic groups. Let no criminal find succour in faith or tribe.
“Let us unite against every criminal activity. Let us stand together as human beings who have a right to live in peace,” he said.

  • Kaduna: UN official urges stakeholders to address causes of clashes

The UN Resident Coordinator, Dr Edward Kallon, on Tuesday appealed to stakeholders to amicably address the underlying causes of the clashes in Kasuwan Magani, Kajuru Local Government Área of Kaduna State and bring the perpetrators to account.

“I urge authorities in the State to seriously look into circumstances leading to these clashes, which have become too common”.

  • Kaduna: Traditional rulers commend Malam el-Rufai

Traditional rulers in Kaduna State have commended the government of Malam Nasir Ahmad el-Rufai for the curfew in the State, and also for the visits to hospitals and affected locations and the state broadcast made by the Governor following unrest in Kasuwan Magani.
TheNewsGuru (TNG) reports the traditional rulers made the commendation on Tuesday during a high profile Security Council meeting Governor el-Rufai held with heads of security agencies and the traditional rulers in the state.
At the meeting, HRH Alhaji Dr. Shehu Idris, the Emir of Zazzau, commiserated with the government over the Kasuwan Magani unrest, and appealed to all communities in the state to strive to pave in peace.

In his speech, Governor el-Rufai commiserated with the traditional rulers over the abduction of the Agom Adara, asserting that “it appears that a constituency has developed which believes that violence pays, and is convinced that violence has no consequence for the perpetrators”.
The Security Council regrets the inconvenience of curfew in the state to residents and noted that the obligation to secure lives and property necessitates the uncompromising approach.
Security council selectively varied the 24-hour curfew in Kaduna metropolis and other parts of the state with immediate effect, and government said it will continue to monitor the situation, and make further announcements based on the guidance of the security agencies.
Governor el-Rufai acknowledged the efforts of the Royal Highnesses present at the meeting in the cause of peace in the state, saying “In particular, we are grateful to their Royal Highnesses, the Emir of Zazzau and the Esu Chikun for their sterling leadership and counsel”.
“As you are aware, there have been breaches of the peace since Thursday, 18th October 2018, when unrest broke out in Kasuwan Magani. The state government promptly imposed a curfew in the area. The loss of lives was staggering, and the damage to lives and livelihoods considerable.
“A brazen crime was committed. We owe the victims justice, and our state respite from the impunity of those who have arrogated to themselves the authority to wantonly violate lives and the rights of others.
“Your Royal Highnesses, we all have a supreme obligation to overcome the legacy of strife in Kaduna State. We are not the only diverse place on this planet. And we must not hold on to a legacy of violence and division.
“The first ethno-religious clash in the state which happened in Kasuwan Magani in 1981, led to the loss of innocence. Since then, it appears that a constituency has developed which believes that violence pays, and is convinced that violence has no consequence for the perpetrators.
“It is time to firmly persuade them otherwise. It is time for a powerful coalition for peace to speak frankly and support firm actions against those who menace the right of our citizens to live in peace wherever they choose and to freely practice their faith anywhere.
“No group or individual will be allowed to veto or constrain the rights that the Constitution has guaranteed,” the Governor stated.

  • Breaking: Gov el-Rufai varies 24-hour curfew in Kaduna

The Malam Nasir Ahmad el-Rufai-led Kaduna State Government has selectively varied the 24-hour curfew declared on Sunday in Kaduna metropolis and other parts of the state with immediate effect.
TheNewsGuru (TNG) reports this follows a meeting of the Kaduna State Security Council which received reports and deliberated on the security situation in the state.
Following the review, the Security Council recommended that the curfew in Kasuwan Magani and Kujama be relaxed so that people can move between 6am – 5pm.
“The curfew in Kasuwan Magani and Kujama remains but will now be enforced from dusk to dawn – from 5pm in the evening to 6am in the morning, till further notice.
“The State Security Council determined that threats continue in Kabala West, Kabala Doki, Sabon-Tasha, Narayi and Maraban Rido within Kaduna Metropilis where attacks on places of worship were either attempted overnight or contemplated.
“Therefore, the Security Council has decided that the 24-hour curfew should remain in these places, and will be vigorously enforced.
“Any individual that violates will be arrested, and the security agencies directed to engage any hoodlums or unauthorized groups with appropriate force.
“For the rest of Kaduna metropolis, the Security Council has noted an improvement in the security situation, and therefore decided that a window be provided for residents to be able to restock on essentials.
“The curfew in the rest of Kaduna Metropolis is relaxed from 1pm to 5pm today to enable all markets, shops and businesses to open and operate. Security agents will patrol and protect the markets to ensure safety and deal with any attempts by hoodlums to engage in criminal conduct.
“The 24-hour curfew in Kaduna Metropolis will be re-imposed from 5pm today, and until further notice.
“The Security Council regrets the inconvenience to residents. But the obligation to secure lives and property necessitates an uncompromising approach. Government will continue to monitor the situation, and make further announcements based on the guidance of the security agencies,” a statement by the Kaduna state government read.
