Kaduna govt to upgrade 255 PHCs

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State, has promised to overhaul the health sector by remodelling and upgrading all the 255 Primary Healthcare Centers (PHCs) in the state to level 2 status.

Sani disclosed this at Kachia on Saturday while flagging-off the distribution of free essential drugs and hospital equipment for the entire PHCs in the 23 Local Government Areas of the state.

The governor said the upgraded PHCs would undertake management of uncomplicated diabetes, uncomplicated hypertension, resuscitation of severe asthma and assisted delivery in addition to other essential services.

Sani noted with satisfaction that the present 255 PHCs in the sate were the best in the country, adding that his administration would do everything possible to ensure that Kaduna takes the lead in subnational healthcare delivery services across the country.

“Last Thursday, Kaduna state has emerged the best performing state in Primary Health Care in the North-West Zone, as attested by ‘PHC Leadership Challenge’ in Abuja,” the governor said.

He also pledged that the upgraded PHCs would be digitised and linked to General Hospitals across the state for Kaduna state citizens to have access to healthcare at all levels.

  • NLC being unfair to us – Kaduna govt cries out

NLC being unfair to us – Kaduna govt cries out

Governor Uba Sani has began the implementation of the National Minimum Wage Act in Kaduna State, an official stated on Sunday in Kaduna.

Sani’s Chief Press Secretary, Malam Ibraheem Musa, in a statement said it was a misrepresentation for the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) in the state to claim the state government has defaulted.

“It is unfair to lump the state with some others yet to do so,” he said.

Musa added that NLC’s lumping of Kaduna State with others was grossly unfair because the least paid worker received N72,000 as gross salary in the month of November.

“The Executive Governor of Kaduna State has complied with the spirit and letter of the National Minimum Wage Law, by paying the lowest paid civil servant N72,000 last month.

“NLC is  harping on the issue of consequential adjustment, but the labour body should realise that there is a difference between salary increment and Minimum Wage,’’ the CPS explained.

He went on to disclose that Kaduna State receives an average of N8 billion from the Federal Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) in Abuja every month.

“The state also generates around N4 billion monthly. That translates to N12 billion revenue monthly. But the monthly wage bill in the state has jumped from N5.4 billion to N6.3 billion with the implementation of the Minimum Wage last month.

“There is also the deduction of N4 billion for loan payments every month. So, the wage bill and the deductions have gulped over N10 million out of the total N12 billion revenue.

“That leaves  only N2 billion for rural transformation, overhauling the health sector, revamping education and providing dividends of democracy to the people of Kaduna State,’’ Musa said.

He then contended that it would be unfair for the Kaduna State Government to spend almost all its revenue on consequential adjustments, after paying the mandatory Minimum Wage.

“There are over 10 million people who are also entitled to the accrued revenue of Kaduna State. There are 84,827 civil servants in the state.

“So, it is unreasonable for Government to spend over 90 percent of its revenue on just about one percent of the population,‘’ the governor’s spokesman explained.

He then pleaded with the NLC to exercise patience over the consequential adjustments, pending when Government’s  revenue would improve.

“Gov. Uba Sani is labour-friendly. Kaduna State Government has already bought buses for civil servants which will convey them to and from work free of charge, as part of the palliatives to cushion effect of prevailing economic challenges,” Musa said.

Kaduna’s ‘One Day’ Governor send strong message to parents

She, however, lamented the growing number of children roaming the streets of Kaduna. Adam appealed to the government to enable every child to have access and quality education.

She said parents were supposed to be the first people to help their children when the need arises, while frowning at those who discipline their children with hunger or other harsh punishment.

She urged parents to be their children’s closest friends in order to avoid wrong advice or bad influence from peer group.

“Our parents need to get us closer to themselves so that they will know our problems and find best solutions to the them, “she said.

The ‘governor’ thanked their school for the initiative of enrolling street children so as to prevent drug abuse and other menace that could be committed by adolescents.

Earlier, Dr Wilfred Mamah, the UNICEF Child Protection Specialist, Kaduna Field Office, said for the organisation, their mandate to protect children all over the world was clear.

He said that the event looked into the Child’s Rights Law. He emphasised that the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child has given children the voice.

According to him, this year’s theme explains the right to be heard as a fundamental right of children.

Mamah, therefore, said the children were brought together to be celebrated and sensitised on their right to survival and development.

One of the stakeholders, the Co-founder of Ummu Aytam (MARAYU) Foundation, an orphanage, Hajiya Zubaida Bature, said they were critical in ensuring that orphans get the best out of life.

She thanked UNICEF for including orphans in marking the event, stressing that it would go a long way in boasting their self-esteem and hope for a better future.

Also, Joseph Ike, the Executive Secretary, Kaduna State Bureau for Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment (KADBUSA), said in prevention, evidence has shown that it works best on adolescents and children.

Ike, represented by Anas Abubakar, the Bureau’s Head of Prevention Services, said they empower children with life and social skills they require to reject and build resilience against falling victims of substance use which may result into abuse and ruin their lives.

He added that the bureau employs the evidence-based prevention programmes to cover all of the stages of development of children from parental period to adolescent.

Ike said, “We have programmes in primary schools, primary health care centres, immunisation and nutrition clinics where pregnant women and women with young children go, secondary schools, sport and community based programmes,”.

The Executive Secretary said the programmes were aimed at empowering adolescents and children with the resilience they need for effective development by shying away from drug abuse and living successful lives.

The global day of action for children, by children, is celebrated annually on November 20, marking the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC).

To address these challenges, UNICEF and partners are working tirelessly to support children in need.

This includes providing emergency aid, promoting education and protection, and advocating policies that prioritise children’s rights.

He stressed the need to tackle the underlying causes of conflict, including, poverty, inequality, lack of public awareness on climate impacts and environmental responsibility.
