Kaduna gov’ship election: Tribunal admits INEC form EC8A, EC8B, others as exhibits

The 3-man panel of the Tribunal headed by Justice Victor Oviawie admitted the INEC Form EC8A, EC8B, EC8C, EC8D, EC8E and EC40G series from various polling units and Local Government  Areas of the state as exhibits, have tendered by the 1st and 2nd petitioners’ lead cousel, Oluwole Iyamu (SAN).

While presenting the exhibits to the court, one of the counsels to the PDP and its candidate, Dr. Ayodele Adewole (SAN), also submitted voters registers’ sheets for 40 polling units with reference to Kaduna South Local Government as parts of the exhibits.

The PDP counsel however, submitted exhibits from Giwa, Chickun, Igabi, Kachia, Kaduna North, Kaduna South, Kagarko, Kubau, Kudan, Lere, Sabon-Gari and Zaria respectively.

Earlier,  the counsel to the 1st (INEC), 2nd (Uba Sani) and 3rd (APC) respondents argued that the petitioner’s counsel had breached the court order, which instructed that all parties (counsels) should meet for the up taking of the exhibits before the presentation.

In his argument, the counsel to the 3rd respondent, Muh’d Sani Katu, who sought for adjournment of the case, explained that the order of the court was that all counsels should meet for sorting and marking of the exhibits for orderliness.

” We can not proceed as it stands, this is because the order is not been complied with,” the counsel argued.

In his defence, the lead counsel to both the PDP and Ashiru, Oluwole Iyamu (SAN) objected, explained that they (the counsels to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd respondents) were given the opportunity for sorting, marking and to study the said exhibits before today’s sitting but failed to show-up as ordered by the court.

” The court registrar can attest to the fact that the 1st, 2nd and 3rd respondents counsels were given the opportunity, and several efforts were made for them to come for the sorting and marking of the exhibits but, they declined,” PDP lead counsel explained.

Upon considering the submissions of the counsels, the court ruled that all exhibits be submitted to the court by the petitioner’s counsel.

Also, Iyamu (SAN) explained to the court that more documents were expected from the INEC, which according to him, are part of exhibits to be tendered.

All exhibits tendered by the gubernatorial candidate of the People Democratic Party, PDP, Hon. Isa Ashiru were all admitted by the Tribunal.

The case as been adjourned till 10th July, 2023 for the continuation of the presentation of exhibits by the petitioners’ counsel.

Jalige said that following credible intelligence, personnel of the command on June 22 at about 22:30 hours, busted a gang of rail line vandals.

“An unspecified number of unknown persons came to Sanzwan in Zonkwa, Zango Kataf Local Government Area, in an articulated vehicle (DAF) with reg no DAL 172 YL and vandalised about 600 pieces of railway slippers.

“On receipt of the information, Police personnel were quickly mobilised to the scene of the crime. On sighting the Police officers, the suspects fled the scene and abandoned the vehicle meant to convey the vandalised items,” he said.

The PPRO said so far no arrest had been made, adding that on June 25, two additional trucks fully loaded with railway slippers were equally recovered.

He said that efforts had been intensified to arrest the fleeing suspects as the investigation was in progress.

“The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Musa Garba, commended the gallant personnel for halting the vandals’ activities while charging the public to always make credible information available on time,” Jalige said.

‘This small micro chip of a man’: Charly Boy slams El-Rufai over religious comment

Popular musician and activist, Charly Boy has slammed the immediate past governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, over his recent controversial religious comment.

El-Rufai had, in a trending video, said he and some northern governors used religion as a political tool to give victory to Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2023 presidential election.

The statement had generated uproar across the country as concerned Nigerians cautioned the former governor against setting the country ablaze, saying he is a religious bigot.

Similarly, Charly Boy took to his official Twitter handle on Thursday to lambast the former governor, describing him as an expired drug.

The tweet reads, “This small micro chip of a man called El-Rufai. No need to go on pretending that you desire the progress of ur country Nigeria that you have so stolen from.

“It is silly to go on pretending that you’re even a true Muslim. You’re an expired drug bad for the unity of this country”.

Swear with Qur’an you didn’t steal govt money – El-Rufai challenges former govs

Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna state has challenged his predecessors to come out and swear with the Holy Quran as a proof that they did not embezzle public funds during their tenure in office

The Governor, who spoke with the Hausa service of the Kaduna State Media Corporation, KSMC, claimed that most of the former governors tampered with the government’s coffers during their tenure.

He gave the challenge while reacting to the opposition’s criticisms of some of his policies, insisting that he has never stolen government money.

He said: ”I didn’t build any mansion, I don’t need it. I didn’t steal anybody’s money and I am challenging everyone that has governed this state to come out and swear with the Qur’an that, when they were governing the state, they didn’t steal a kobo of Kaduna resources that is not their entitlement.

“I swear to God, I will do that swearing. So, I am challenging all of them. Everyone should come out and face the people of Kaduna State and tell them he didn’t steal their money.”

PDP denies purported suspension of Makarfi

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has denied the purported suspension of Sen. Mohammed Makarfi from the party, over alleged anti-party activities.

Mr Felix Hyet, the Kaduna State PDP Chairman, said this in a statement in Kaduna on Tuesday.

“We call you to clarify the purported suspension of the PDP leader, Sen. Mohammed Makarfi by few misguided members of his ward in Makarfi Local Government Area (LGA).

‘’We want to tell you that those people have no power to suspend the caliber of a member like Makarfi, except the National Leadership of the party.

“There is nobody that played the role of Makarfi during the campaign he led to big towns where we held town hall meetings with political groups, religious and cultural groups. He spent his resources.

‘’Therefore for anybody to wake up and say that Makarfi was involved in anti-party activities, I say it is a joke taken too far,’’ Hyet said.

He added: “We want to tell the world who Makarfi is, what he has done for the party and we stand by him, we have set aside that misguided press statement because it has no effect, it is therefore null and void.

‘’Therefore it should be discarded forthwith among all the critical stakeholders we have in the state.

‘’Makarfi stands taller because he supported the party in the last election. He followed us to all the 23 LGAs on campaigns.

“Already, the majority member of ward Exco, and the LGA Exco have met and they have taken disciplinary decision that could be meted out to those who did it.’’

“Let me clarify also that these are people who have been identified as having participated in anti- party activities during the last election under the guidance of their leaders at the state level who never went into any campaign throughout.

“We therefore want to call on the people of Kaduna State that Makarfi remains the hero, if there is anything, it is to give grand reception for leading the state successfully in the last general election.

“For clarity, Section 57 (7) provides that notwithstanding any other provision relating to discipline, no executive committee, at any level except the National Executive Committee, shall entertain any question of discipline as may relate or concern a member of the National Executive Committee, Deputy Governor or member of the National Assembly”.

Makarfi, a former Acting PDP National Chairman, was on Sunday allegedly suspended by the executives of Tudun Wada Ward in Makarfi LGA of Kaduna State over anti-party activities.

HORRIFIC! Man blows self up to evade arrest

There was confusion in Kaduna when a man took his life by blowing himself up with an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in order to evade arrest.

The incident occurred at Ibrahim Haske Road in the KEKE community of Kaduna Millennium City, on Monday morning.

According to eyewitnesses, gunshots were heard around 1 am when officials from the Department of State Services (DSS), soldiers, and the police arrived at the suspect’s residence.
gathered that when the man realised he was surrounded, he resorted to using explosives to end his life.

He was said to have exchanged gunfire with the security operatives before taking his life.

A security source revealed that an AK-47 rifle was discovered inside the house, along with two other IEDs that were later defused by the Anti-bomb squad.

“The man’s body was mutilated due to the explosive device, while his wife and children were taken away by DSS officials in their vehicles,” the source said.

A community leader, Malam Samaila, confirmed the incident, noting that the security operatives had barricaded the street to prevent people from approaching the suspect’s house.

Samaila stated that it is likely that the security personnel had tracked down the suspect to his residence to arrest him.

However, realizing that escape was impossible, he decided to take his own life inside the house.

The operation was jointly conducted by the DSS, police, and soldiers, who arrived in Hilux trucks, Jeeps, and ambulances. They left the community at approximately noon.

The Kaduna State Police Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Jalige Mohammed, couldn’t be reached for comment as calls to his phone remain unanswered and is yet to reply to a text message sent to him over the man that blew himself up and caused not small pandemonium.

Excitement as Kaduna teachers operate computer for the first time

Excitement was visibly written on the faces of some primary school teachers in Kaduna State on Monday as they touched and operated the computer for the first time ever.

The 25 teachers had undergone a five-day digital literacy training programme organised for primary school teachers in Chikun Local Government Area of the state.

The training was organised by Emerald-Isle Foundation (EIF) under its “Train-the-Tutor’’ project, designed to improve the capacity of teachers.

It was organised in partnership with the Kaduna Basic Education Accountability Mechanism, IHIFIX Foundation, Queen Amina College, and Leadership, Effectiveness, Accountability and Professionalism (LEAP) Africa, a youth-focused leadership development non-profit organisation.

The Coalition of Associations for Leadership, Peace, Empowerment and Development is another partner in the training programme

Ms Kasham Tanko, primary four teacher at Local Government Education Authority (LGEA) primary school, Sabon Tasha, Kaduna

One of the teachers, Ms Kasham Tanko, who teaches a Primary Four class at Local Government Education Authority Primary School, Sabon Tasha, said the training was a game changer for her.

The visibly-excited Tanko said: “Oh! Wow! Oh! Wow! To God be the glory. I participated in the training that has completely transformed me from a digital novice to a digital savvy teacher.

“Whenever I see a laptop computer, I used to ask myself, what is this? Not that I haven’t seen it before, but I had wondering how people operated it.

“To God be the glory, I have participated in the training and I am now able to do so many things on the computer.

“It is a rare privilege for me because I have never undergone any computer training before,’’ she said.

Tanko added that the training had improved her capacity to use Microsoft Word and PowerPoint applications to prepare lesson plans, notes and prepare presentations.

She commended EIF for the opportunity, which had enabled her to know how to source materials online to prepare rich lesson plans and notes using different online platforms.

Other participants told NAN that they had also seen computers in the past, but it was their first time of operating one.

Mrs Debora Solomon, Head Teacher of UBE Primary School Sabon Gida, Udawa, Chikun Kaduna

Head Teacher of UBE Primary School Sabon Gida, Udawa, Mrs Debora Solomon, said her experience was “beyond description’’ having had the opportunity to operate a computer for the first time.

“This is my first time touching a computer since joining the teaching profession in 2007. Now I have learned how to use different tools and applications, including Google tools and other e-learning platforms.

“I have also learned how to use Google tools to interact with my teachers and hold online classes.

“The experience is so amazing, and thanks to Emerald-Isle Foundation; now I can do all these things on a computer,’’ she said.

Mrs Dorcas Dare, primary one teacher at LGEA Primary School, Nasarawa I, Kaduna

The experience was not different for Mrs Dorcas Dare, a Primary One teacher at Local Government Education Authority Primary School, Nasarawa I, who described the training as an “eye opener’’.

Dare said that the last time she touched a computer was after her secondary school when she enrolled for introduction to computer class where she learned a little about the computer.

She added that the digital literacy training had opened her eyes to so many possibilities in the digital space that would make teaching delivery easy and in the long run, improve learning outcomes.

“Besides learning some of the basics of computers, I also learned how I can source materials by logging to Ignite, the inspired e-platform and Nigerian Learning Passport.

“These are websites with rich education resources that can be downloaded and used to prepare rich lesson notes that will improve learners’ knowledge on any topic or subject.

“I never knew how possible it was to teach pupils using online platforms and applications, but now I know how, and I am looking forward to exploring them in the future,’’ she said.

One of the instructors, Mr Isaac Sunday, a digital expert with Ihifix Technology ltd., Kaduna, said the training was hectic because he had to take participants through the very basics of computer appreciation.

He added that because most of the teachers were operating a computer for the very first time, he had to take them through how to use the mouse, and how to switch a computer on and off.

“I also taught them how to use the keyboard; how to create a folder and how to use Google collaborative tools so that they can learn how to interact with themselves and with their pupils,’’ he said.

The digital expert described the non-availability of computers in most public primary schools in Kaduna State as a “serious challenge’’ that would affect the ability of the teachers to put the digital skills to use.

He said pupils also needed to have access to computers to be on the same page with their teachers for improved learning experiences and outcomes.

EIF Chief Executive Officer, Ms Evelyn Ode, said the training packages included computer appreciation, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Google Collaborative Tools, and e-learning platforms.

Ode stressed that the goal was to improve teaching and learning outcomes in public and private schools in Kaduna State to be in tune with the current digital age.
