    Mobile Court convicts Army General, Islamic cleric in Kaduna

    A Kaduna Mobile Court has convicted a renowned Islamic cleric, Sheikh Yusuf Sambo Rigachukun and his son for violating the Quarantine Order, which spells out measures to curb the spread of COVID-19 pandemic.

    A statement by Commissioner of Justice and Attorney General of Kaduna State, Aisha Dikko on Monday, said the duo was arrested at Kaduna State University (KASU) junction for violating the stay- at -home order and not wearing face masks.

    The Commissioner said the cleric told the court that he was invited by Kaduna State Media Corporation (KSMC) for a radio programme, which explained why he was not observing the lockdown order.

    Aisha Dikko said: ‘’Rigachukun and his son were however both charged for not wearing facemasks and were fined N5000 each. In addition, the court asked the cleric to perform community service, by informing the public on how to stop the spread of Covid-19.’’

    The statement, which warned Kaduna residents to desist from violating the lockdown order, further said that the Kakuri mobile court had also arrested an Army General at the ‘’Toll Gate’’ area of Kaduna-Abuja expressway last Tuesday.

    The Attorney General said that Army officer, who was in full uniform, was arrested while driving in from Abuja with three other passengers who had no face masks.

    According to her: ‘’The General identified himself and said he was coming from Abuja and on a official duty. However, the court tried and convicted the other three passengers, for not complying with the stay at home order and wearing face masks.’’

    The Commissioner further said that 75 culprits were convicted out of the 105 people who violated the ban on inter-state travel at the border between Kaduna state and the Federal Capital Territory, as well as the Kaduna-Katsina state border last week.

    The statement said that the culprits were apprehended by senior officials of Kaduna State Government who were patrolling the borders and handed over to the violators to the various mobile courts.

    Aisha Dikko who warned against the violation of the Coronavirus(COVID-19) Partial Lockdown Order 2020, reminded that offenders shall be fined and in addition, may undergo community service for seven days.

  • Four-month-old baby, 19 others test positive for COVID-19 in Kaduna

    A four-month old baby is one of the 20 new COVID-19 cases recorded in Kaduna on Friday, its Ministry of Health has confirmed.

    The ministry also disclosed the 20 new cases include six health workers.

    In a statement by the Commissioner of Health, Dr Amina Mohammed Baloni on Saturday, the ministry revealed that investigations indicate that the father of the infected child has travel history to Kano.

    ‘’The infant, who had been brought to hospital for respiratory issues, was tested in accordance with the updated guidelines which advise that persons presenting with such symptoms be tested,” she added.

    Baloni further said that the child’s ‘’parents have also been tested and their results are being awaited.’’

    The Commissioner further said that 15 cases out of the 20 new patients are family members or close contacts of previously confirmed cases, adding that the new cases are spread across seven local government areas.

    ‘’Chikun has seven (including five members of the same family), Giwa recorded four from the Shika community while three cases are in Kaduna North. Sabon-Gari and Kaduna South have two cases each, while Igabi and Zaria have one each.” She said.

    The statement added: “Six health workers are among the new cases, underlining the risks associated with containing and managing Covid-19.”

    According to Baloni, the latest cases show that Covid-19 has spread into nine local governments, including Chikun, Igabi and Giwa, as well as Kaduna North, Kaduna South, Makarfi, Sabon-Gari, Soba and Zaria area councils.

    ‘’This widening spread of Covid-19 means that the risk of infection has increased for persons who do not stay at home or who fail to observe necessary precautions when they go out,’’ she said.

    Dr Baloni advised parents to shun non-essential travel or interactions to avoid taking the virus home and infecting their children and loved ones, adding that ‘’they must also exercise personal responsibility regarding not allowing visitors into their homes.’’

    The Commissioner said that everyone owes his or her family, a duty of care by not exposing them to visits and interactions hat increase their risk of being infected.

    The statement revealed that ‘’one of the Covid-19 fatalities in the state got infected when he received visitors at home.

    ‘’Elderly persons and those with chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and respiratory diseases are more vulnerable to complications of Covid-19 infection.

    Dr Baloni appealed to all residents to wash their hands regularly with soap and water, wear face masks if they have compelling reasons to go out, observe physical distancing and avoid large gatherings.

    ‘’Our communities should also continue the public service of reporting suspicious cases in their areas,” the Commissioner added.

  • Kaduna discharges 35 COVID-19 positive Almajirai after treatment

    Not less than 35 of the Almajirai infected by Covid-19 in Kaduna State have been discharged.

    Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufa’i who disclosed this on his Twitter handle said, Kaduna State now has 47 active Covid-19 cases following the treatment and discharge of the 35 almajirai.

    According to El-Rufai, “35 more patients, all of them almajirai have been discharged having tested negative to the virus.

    “The State now has 47 active Covid-19 cases, having discharged 63 persons and recorded four fatalities.” He said.

    The state had recently discharged 210 other Almajirai after testing negative teice, from the quarantine centre where they were kept for two week after they were repatriated to the state from Kano and other states.

    Surrender to military or be crushed like Boko Haram, group tells Kaduna bandits

    The Kaduna Peace Advancement Network ( KSPAN) has warned bandits in the state to either surrender or suffer the same fate as Boko Haram terrorists in the Northeast.

    The group, in a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Comrade Hassan Abu, on Wednesday, advised the criminal elements that failure to submit themselves to the military would ultimately lead to their deaths.

    In the last one month, the Nigerian troops have bombarded Boko Haram terrorists, with factional leader, Abubakar Shekau, reaching out for a truce, as all his top commanders have been decimated.

    This remarkable feat was orchestrated by Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lt. Gen. T.Y, who led the troops from the front.

    With the final clearance mission in Borno and Yobe States winding down, KSPAN said all attention will be switched to Kaduna, warning the bandits that it would no longer be business as usual.

    While commending the troops of Operations Thunder strike and Whirl Punch for restoring peace to the state, the group, however, advised the fleeing bandits and their sponsors to take a new leaf else be wiped out like Boko Haram.

    The police in Kaduna State on Tuesday confirmed the killing of 15 persons by suspected bandits in Gonar Rogo village in Kajuru Local Government Area of the State.

    The police, in a statement issued by the command spokesperson, Mohammed Jalige, vowed to apprehend the culprits.

    Mr Jalige said the command received a distress call on Tuesday through the DPO Kajuru that a group of armed men on motorbikes invaded Gonar Rogo, a remote village in Kufana district, Kajuru LGA.

    “The attackers started shooting sporadically, attacking the villagers and in the process shot and killed 15 persons, and injured five others,” he said.

    He explained that, on the receipt of the information, the command promptly mobilised a combined team of PMF personnel, conventional police in synergy with the army and the local vigilante to the area.

    ”While we embarked on an intensive manhunt for the fleeing attackers, both the dead and the injured victims were evacuated to hospital,” he said.

    According to him, reinforcement has been drafted to the area “for intensive combing and patrol, with a view to forestalling further breakdown of law and order or reprisal attacks, as well as the arrest of perpetrators.”

    “The command calls on members of the public to continue to assist the police with useful information that could help in addressing these challenges and for the possible arrest of these criminals,” Mr Jalige said.

    Kaduna captures two fleeing COVID-19 patients

    Security agents in Kaduna have arrested the two COVID-19 positive persons who disappeared from their homes after they were notified of their status.

    Commissioner of Health Dr. Amina Mohammad Baloni confirmed that they have been dragged to the isolation centre.

    Baloni’s ministry had declared the two persons missing.

    Government wanted them to come for treatment at the isolation centre.

    In a statement on Sunday, Baloni warned that it is illegal and dangerous for Covid-19 patients to switch off their phones and make themselves inaccessible to health authorities after being notified of their test results.’’

    The Health Commissioner noted that ‘the reckless action of the absconded positive patients is not only endangering themselves but their families and the larger community.

    ‘’Similar irresponsible conduct by some Covid-19 positive cases has been reported in another state.

    “It is a pattern of behaviour that must be stopped because it is patently dangerous to public safety, ‘’ she warned.

    Kaduna state records 2 COVID-19 related deaths

    Kaduna State Government says it had recorded two more COVID-19 related deaths.

    Gov.Nasir El Rufai stated this in a tweet on his verified official twitter handle, adding that the two latest fatalities included a senior citizen from Makarfi and a lady from Zaria.

    In the tweet, released at 11.04 pm on Saturday, the governor revealed that two more persons had tested positive in the state, bringing the active COVID-19 cases in to 87.

    He said the two new cases were a male from Igabi and a female from Chikun Local Government Areas (LGAs)of the state.

    The state recorded its first reported COVID-19 related death on May 2, when a patient, a retired civil servant, who concealed his travel history to Kano, died before the result of his test was out.

    The state government had raised an alarm that majority of COVID-19 cases in the state had travel history and that illegal inter-state travel was widening the spread of COVID-19 in state.

    Mr Muyiwa Adekeye, Special Adviser to the governor on Media and Communication said in a statement that illegal travels increased the danger of community transmission of Ccronavirus as infections had been recorded in some rural communities around the state boundaries.

    Adekeye appealed for vigilance and active involvement of all residents in the effort to avert peril.

    He said positive COVID-19 test results have been recorded in seven LGAs of the state- Giwa, Igabi, Kaduna North, Kaduna South, Makarfi, Soba and Zaria.

    50 Almajiri from Kano test positive for COVID-19 in Kaduna – El-Rufai

    Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufa’i has disclosed that, repatriated Almajiri children from Kano State account for 50 of the 59 active COVID-19 cases in Kaduna.

    Governor El-Rufai disclosed this on his accredited Twitter handle on Sunday.

    Kaduna State has 66 confirmed cases of the virus, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

    Out of the 66, six people, including Governor El-Rufai, who was the index have been treated and discharged while one case, a retired Civil Servant, who equally returned from Kano was confirmed dead on Saturday.

    Kaduna State Government had Saturday evening confirmed 14 additional cases among Almajiri and later confirmed another 16 positive result from the pupils.

    However, few hours after, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) announced 31 confirmed cases of the virus in Kaduna on Saturday.

    Giving further details on Sunday, Governor El-Rufai posted on Twitter that, “COVID-19 Update: The Kaduna State Ministry of Health this evening confirmed receipt of 16 more positive results, 15 of them from almajiris. The state has now recorded 50 cases from repatriated almajiris. Active cases have risen to 59.”

    The state is still under 24hours quarantine, while the Government has since blocked all the major entries into the State to prevent further inter-state travel

  • COVID-19: Kaduna records first death, confirms three new cases

    The Kaduna State Government says it has recorded its first casualty to the coronavirus pandemic and additional three active cases.

    The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Amina Mahammed Bolani, confirmed this on Saturday in Kaduna.

    She said that the first fatality was among additional three COVID-19 cases confirmed in the state.

    According to the commissioner, the state now has 28 confirmed cases and awaits results of 350 samples it sent for tests.
    She said that the samples were especially from ‘almajiris’.

    “Testing of 167 almajiris who returned from Kano has now been completed, and the number of positive cases from this group may rise.

    “Cases in the state rose to 28 on Thursday.

    ” The three patients that increased the number from 25 include two males and the first female COVID-19 case in the state,” the official said.

    She said that the female patient was a health worker not involved in the treatment of COVID-19 cases.

    “One of the two males was a retired civil servant with underlying medical conditions, who concealed his recent travel to Kano when he visited a public hospital and a private hospital.

    “He was eventually admitted at the isolation centre with respiratory distress.

    ” He died before his positive test result was released. He is the first COVID-19 fatality in Kaduna State,” she said.

    The official said that the family of the deceased had been informed of his demise, and he had been buried according to the burial protocol of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

    “Following this development, state health officials are decontaminating the two hospitals that the deceased visited.

    “Staff who attended to him have been isolated, as well as his family members.”

    “The ministry, therefore, appeal to citizens who suspect that they have been exposed to COVID-19 to avoid infecting others.

    “They should rather follow the safe protocol of isolating themselves at home while contacting health officials.

    “Concealing relevant information and engaging in conduct that exposes others to the risk of infection constitute a danger to the community and will be regarded as wilful and reckless endangerment of the well-being and lives of other citizens.

    “Such conduct contravenes the provisions of the Quarantine Orders and could lead to prosecution,” the commissioner said.
    She also advised the state residents to maintain hand washing, personal hygiene, social distancing, and avoid large gatherings to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

    She also urged the residents to wear face masks when leaving their homes, and wash their hands when on return.
    “Keeping safe from this pandemic is a responsibility of every citizen.

    “All of us must take steps to protect ourselves and our households from COVID-19.”

    Governor Nasir El-Rufai has revealed that he infected four persons with COVID-19.

    El-Rufai who made this known while giving an update on measures put in place to curb the spread of the disease in the state said he got infected in Abuja.

    According to him, Kaduna State has successfully reduced traffic into the State.

    Part of the statement reads, “I was the first case, fortunately, I would say, because it served to scare everyone about reality. COVID is real, it’s not a joke. I was the first case, I got it in Abuja and infected four other people, all of us are okay now.”

    Meanwhile, the El-Rufai-led government has a life insurance package for frontline health workers dealing with COVID-19 to the tune of N5 million.

    Speaking at the 24th edition of The Platform, hosted by Poju Oyemade’s Covenant Nation, the governor said the state is taking extraordinary care of its health workers.

    “We took extraordinary steps to get PPEs for our health workers, we didn’t want to expose any of our frontline workers. We also insured their lives to the tune of N5 million, anyone that dies in this process, his family will get N5 million,” he said.

    “We have additional disability insurance for those that get sick and cannot work but are not dead. We are also giving special allowances to all health workers, as well as extraordinary allowances to those on the frontline.”
