  • 2019: INEC commits blunder, takes Kebbi’s electoral materials to kaduna

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has mistakenly delivered Kebbi State election materials meant for the Saturday poll to Kaduna State and those meant for Katsina were brought to Kebbi, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Kebbi State, Ahmad Mahmud has said.

The REC, during his interactions with journalists after inspecting the elections sensitive materials at the Central Bank of Nigeria’s state office in Birnin Kebbi, said “Two of our forms-EC 8D1 and EC 8E1 were mistakenly taken to Kaduna and that of Katsina was brought to Kebbi.

“We discover it during the inspection and they are already bringing it back to Kebbi.”

The REC said INEC in Kebbi State had received all the sensitive materials meant for the presidential and national assembly elections and would start distributing them on Wednesday across the 21 Local Government Areas of the state.

He also said all Card Readers sent to the state have been configured.

“I can confirm to you that we have received all the sensitive materials meant for Kebbi State and all the Card Readers have been configured. By tomorrow (Wednesday) we shall start distributing the sensitive materials”

He said the voting exercise will take place in 2,398 polling units and 1,345 voting points in the 225 wards of the state.

  • BREAKING: 130 persons killed in Kaduna, not 66 – El-Rufai

The Kaduna state Governor, Nasir El-Rufai has said that the actual number of persons killed last Friday in Kajuru Local Government Area of the state was 130 and not the 66 he said.

Governor el-Rufai, had, last Friday, raise the alarm that unknown gunmen had killed 66 persons in the area. But, addressing State House correspondents on Tuesday, the governor said that based on the security briefings he has received, that the actual number of those killed was 130 and not 66.

Governor El-Rufai also described those doubting the killings as “grossly irresponsible.”

On the eve of the earlier scheduled general election, the governor had said that 66 persons were killed by unknown attackers. Many people had doubted the Governor over the report. But coming out from a security meeting he convened, attended by the governors of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states, as well as the security chiefs, said he gets security briefings daily to know the situation in and around Kaduna, adding that, “I work only on that basis.”

Governor El-Rufai had earlier in a report, said that, “Only irresponsible and insensitive people can recklessly dismiss the deaths of members of a community with whom they have no contact.”

He also noted that, “the latest report shows that over 130 were killed, not even 66.” He therefore restated his earlier resolve that, “The government of a state cannot be detained by parochial, ethno-religious, partisan or electoral calculations from doing its duty to provide security, confirm incidents of security breaches, take steps to reassure affected communities and ensure that perpetrators are arrested and brought to justice.”

In a statement issued by his spokesman, Samuel Aruwan, two days ago, after the governor was led on the spot assessment of the area by the GOC 1 Div, the state commissioner of police and other security chiefs, he had warned that the state government cannot allow itself to be hamstrung by any consideration while performing her responsibilities.

The statement had partly read thus: “Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has visited the scenes of the Kajuru killings.

The governor was accompanied on the trip by Major-General Faruk Yahaya, GOC 1 Division of the Nigerian Army, Air Cmdr. I. Sani of the Nigerian Air Force, Police Commissioner, Ahmad Abdurrahman and State Director of the SSS, A.I. Koya. The chairman of Kajuru local government council, Cafra Caino, also joined the governor on the visit.

“The Kaduna State Government notes the concerted and apparently coordinated efforts by bigoted busy bodies to deny the Kajuru killings, or to minimise the casualty figures, and the specious arguments being deployed in this despicable quest.

The Kaduna State Government condemns in the strongest terms attempts to politicise the killings. “Only irresponsible and insensitive people can recklessly dismiss the deaths of members of a community with whom they have no contact.

Private individuals and unelected actors cannot be allowed to reduce weighty matters of state security to the province of their limited networks, inexperienced lenses and narrow agendas.

“The government of a state cannot be detained by parochial, ethno-religious, partisan or electoral calculations from doing its duty to provide security, confirm incidents of security breaches, take steps to reassure affected communities and ensure that perpetrators are arrested and brought to justice.”

Kaduna PDP guber candidate calls for arrest of perpetrators of Kajuru killings

The Kaduna State Gubernatorial Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Alhaji Isah Ashiru has urged the State Government and Security Agencies to fish out and prosecute those involved in the killings of villagers in Kajuru area of the state.

Ashiru, in a statement he issued in Kaduna on Monday, expressed shock by the report of the murder of innocent people, describing the situation as unfortunate.

” This unfortunate incident is not only an unwanted addition to the list of the past similar ones, but is also a clear indication that insecurity still remains a huge challenge in some parts of Kaduna state.

“The fact that the loss of human lives has been confirmed makes the whole issue terribly shocking.

“The act clearly smacks of callousness and a descent into barbarism.

“This will require a tremendous determination and demonstration of a sense of justice and fairness on the part of the authorities whose responsibility it is to not only deal appropriately with the perpetrators of such acts but to also forestall their recurrence.

“Let me quickly remind my dear good people of Kaduna State of the need to embrace peace and eschew violence so that the diversity with which Almighty God has endowed us can be harnessed for the good of all of us.

“Our State is big, bountiful and rich enough to accommodate all of us; all we need to do is to continuously remind ourselves of the fact that resorting to violence has never benefitted us as a people,” Ashiru said.

He urged people of the state to “endeavour to come together, regardless of political, religious or ethnic differences, to let the world know that we are committed to ridding our state of violence

“At the same time, we must be willing to live as true brothers and sisters that we have always been.

“While we condole with the bereaved families, I also wish to re-assure everyone again that my bid to clinch the governorship of Kaduna state is driven by both an immense concern for our people and a total determination to rescue the state from misrule.

“I, therefore, wish to express my heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, people of Kajuru local government area as well as the government and the entire people of Kaduna state over this unfortunate incident.

“It is my fervent prayer that Almighty God who created those souls will expose the perpetrators of the heinous act.”

It would be recalled that unknown armed men had on February 11, attacked and killed 66 persons including children and women in eight settlements in Kajuru local government area of the state.

  • Miyetti Allah speaks on recent killings in Kaduna

The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has called on all affected Fulanis to remain calm and resist all forms of provocation to consider reprisal attacks over the killings in Kajuru local government of Kaduna State last week.

Also, Kaduna State PDP gubernatorial candidate, Isa Mohammed Ashiru, called on relevant security agencies to prosecute criminals who carried out the killings.

MACBAN and Ashiru, in their separate reactions on Monday, commended Governor Malam Nasir el-Rufai for being proactive in ensuring the situation was brought under control and prevent any form of reprisal attack in the troubled area.

The Assistant Women Leader MACBAN, Hajiya Khadijah Ardido, told reporters it was unfortunate and most painful that people were killed with reckless abandon, including women and children.

She lamented the killings were being denied by people who have no human feelings.

As I speak to you now, some of the injured victims are still in the hospital. It is painful that Fulanis are being killed not only in Kaduna state but in several other parts of the country and little or nothing is being done about it.

The government must rise to this challenge and stop all forms of unwarranted killings, there must be respect for human lives,” she stressed.

She went on: “Our people have always been very patient and tolerant and I am still encouraging them to remain patient, disciplined and tolerant in the face of any provocation.

As a mother, I am calling on my people not to revolt. Those killing should know that they are doing the wrong thing, particularly killing innocent women and children.

The government should ensure that proper investigation is carried out and whoever is found guilty should be made to face the full wrath of the law, at least to serve as deterrent to others now and in the future.

Justice must be done to the affected in the killings and the step taken by Governor Nasir el-Rufai towards bringing to justice all those who have hands in the killing is a commendable one”

Ashiru said the incident was not only an unwanted addition to the list of the past similar ones but clear indication that insecurity still remains a huge challenge in some parts of Kaduna State.

According to him: “It is with an absolute shock that I received the news broken by the Kaduna State Governor, of the murder of many people in some settlements in Kajuru Local Government Area of our dear Kaduna State.

The fact that the loss of human lives has been confirmed makes the whole issue terribly shocking. The act clearly smacks of callousness and a descent into barbarism.

I, therefore, wish to express my heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, people of Kajuru Local Government Area as well as the Government and the entire people of Kaduna State over this unfortunate incident.

It is my fervent prayer that almighty who God created those souls will expose the perpetrators of the heinous act.”

He added: “Let me quickly remind my dear good people of Kaduna State of the need to embrace peace and eschew violence so that the diversity with which Almighty God has endowed us can be harnessed for the good of all of us.

Our State is big, bountiful and rich enough to accommodate all of us; all we need to do is to continuously remind ourselves of the fact that resort to violence has never benefitted us as a people. In fact, such an act which results in the loss of human lives diminishes us as a people.

We should therefore endeavour to come together, regardless of political, religious or ethnic differences, to let the world know that we are committed to ridding our state of violence and at the same time willing to live as the true brothers and sisters that we have always been.

While I once again condole with the bereaved families, I also wish to re-assure everyone again that my bid to clinch the governorship of Kaduna State is driven by both an immense concern for our people and a total determination to rescue the State from misrule.

  • El-Rufai unpopular in Kaduna, can’t win second term bid – Shehu Sani

El-Rufai unpopular in Kaduna, can’t win second term bid – Shehu Sani

The Senator representing Kaduna Central at the National Assembly, Shehu Sani, has described the state Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, as “unpopular.”

Sani, who is contesting for the Senate on the People’s Redemption Party platform, also said the governor had not achieved anything since 2015.

The senator had dumped the All Progressives Congress for the PRP three days after he was denied the ticket to contest for the Senate on the APC platform.

His rift with the state governor was believed to have cost him the ticket.

Speaking on Nigeria 2019, an Arise TV programme on Thursday, Sani said the PRP was a major threat to the APC in Kaduna State, saying, “This is why every morning and evening, they destroy our billboards and tear our posters. They are persecuting our members. If we were inconsequential, they would have ignored us.”

Sani alleged that, the fact that “el-Rufai had a hand” in denying him the APC ticket didn’t mean anything.

He said, “The question is, can he win? The fact is that he is one of the most unpopular governors in the history of Kaduna State.

The President (Muhammadu Buhari) has been to the state for many times, but how many times have you seen him inaugurating a project in the state?

The first time the President went there, he was given a honorary degree from a university that had not started a PhD programme; the second time he was in the state was to inaugurate Olam, a company from Singapore.

The third time was to inaugurate a project by the Ministry of Transport. So, he (el-Rufai) has not done anything and we are going to remove him out of power. That is a fact.”

The lawmaker explained that he and el-Rufai had always been at daggers drawn because of their differences both politically and ideologically.

He said, “Politically, he is a product of the establishment. Out of what they say is the 16-year tragedy of the Peoples Democratic Party, he spent 14 or 15 years there as a member, from the regime of (former President Olusegun) Obasanjo, where he held different positions. So, he was part of the system before he joined the APC.

All my life, I have been a freedom fighter, that is, a human rights activist. Most of the years under military rule, I spent my time in prison. From this angle, you can see where we differ.”

Sani said the adoption of the Muslim-Muslim ticket by el-Rufai for the forthcoming governorship election in the state also showed that the governor “is arrogant and haughty.”

For a governor of a state who came into office with a Muslim-Christian ticket now going for a second term and saying some people don’t matter, I don’t want to be associated with that kind of person, because all I know is that, with all his arrogance, haughtiness and egoism as a governor, power is ephemeral.

There is a time he will be out of office and he will account for whatever he has done,” Sani stated.

The spokesman said that the service also arrested a suspected member of the Islamic State in West Africa (ISWA), Umar Nuhu, who was a close associate of Liman Maitukwane, current leader of Ansaru group.

He said that the suspect was arrested on Nov. 13 at Rafin-Guza, Kaduna State by the joint team.

The spokesman said that the group was responsible for several attacks on Military Bases in the North- East.

He said that the service on Nov. 16 arrested five suspected members of a kidnap and cattle rustling syndicate at Gumel, Jigawa while on transit.

The suspects are: Shuaibu Shehu, Abdulkarim Dauda, Adamu Usaini, Umar Adamu and Usaini Shede.

  • El-Rufai: Why I choose Hadiza Balarabe as my Running Mate

El-Rufai: Why I choose Hadiza Balarabe as my Running Mate

Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, has given reasons over the choice of Dr. Hadiza Balarabe as his running mate in 2019 gubernatorial election, saying Balarabe was chosen based on her competence and antecedents.

The Governor made the clarification on Tuesday, while playing host to people of Sanga Local Government, where Balarabe hails from, who paid him a ‘thank you’ visit over the choice of their daughter.

While narrating the journey that led to the choice of Dr. Hadiza Balarabe, Governor El-Rufai said, “About a year ago, the Deputy Governor, Architect Barnabas Yusuf Bala told me he was going to contest for Senate, I was in dilemma to get a replacement for Architect Bantex.

“So, we started filing list of people for consideration, and I had up to 32 names, including names of some people seated with me here today.

“Then, we started selection and dropping of names based on merit from 32 names to 17 to 12 and then five names, three males and two females.

Explaining how he tried to get in touch with Balarabe, the governor said the next challenge for him was how to get Balarabe’s number and that it was his third wife that gave it to him after he made some calls.

“When I called her she said she was in Kenya, I told her that she will be my running mate in the 2019 elections and I asked her whether she will accept it.

“She did not give an answer immediately but she called me back after some minutes and said she accepted,” the governor explained.

He said after making the choice, many respected persons called to tell him that he made the right choice as Balarabe is hard working and competent.

The governor added:”From the beginning, I had told my team that, I will never choose or deny anyone appointment because of religion or ethnicity”

While speaking on Balarabe’s giant strides in her previous assignment, El-Rufai said his running mate has repositioned the state primary healthcare development agency where she was Executive Secretary.

Earlier, the Sanga people said the appointment of their daughter, Dr. Hadiza Balarabe as the running mate to governor El-rufai for the 2019 election has given them hope that they actually belong in the affairs of governance.

Speaking on behalf of the community, the traditional ruler of Numana, Etu Numana, Brig-Gen. Aliyu Yamma (Rtd), said over the years, the successive governments had forgotten the people of the area as far as participation in governance was concerned.

The traditional ruler noted, “The governor couldn’t have made a better choice than the selection of Hadiza. We now feel a sense of belonging in Kaduna government”.

He also appealed to Governor El-rufai to ensure establiahment of Army Battalion in Sabon Gida village because of insecurity in the area.

He said, “The Sabo Gida has become a hideout for criminals, these criminals run from Plateau state to hide here, so we are calling on the governor to help us with the establishment of Army Battalion in Sabo Gida”.

  • Perpetrators of Kaduna violence won’t go scot-free – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday said he would not fold his arms and allow those responsible for the recent killing in parts of Kaduna State to go unpunished.
He said the Federal Government would take strongest measures possible to punish the perpetrators.
Buhari made the promise while paying a condolence visit to the state.
During the visit, the President met with senior government officials, security chiefs, traditional rulers, religious, political and community leaders at the Musa Yar’Adua Sports Complex, Kaduna.
According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, the President expressed sadness at the recent loss of lives and property in Kasuwan Magani and the unrest around Kaduna metropolis.
He said such wanton killings must stop forthwith.
He said, “If in the past, they (perpetrators of violence) got away scot-free, we shall now hold everyone to account for these latest killings.
“It is unacceptable that criminal elements can visit on citizens the wanton killings recorded in the Kasuwan Magani incident of October 18, 2018 and the unrest around Kaduna metropolis a few days later. This must stop.”
The President directed the Nigeria Police Force to remain vigilant in securing communities and diligent in prosecuting criminal offences.
He said he had put the police under his watch.
“The Nigerian police are in the frontline of securing communities. For the judiciary, unless the investigations are credible and rapidly done, there is nothing they can do.
“From now on, the Nigeria police, you better watch it, I am going to watch you closely,” the President said.
Buhari also appealed to community leaders including ward heads, village heads and traditional rulers to be closer to their people.
He urged them not to shield those who are planning to wreak havoc on the community from law enforcement agencies.
He commiserated with the government and people of Kaduna State, and families who lost loved ones in the incidents.
The President also paid tribute to the late Agom Adara, Dr. Maiwada Galadima, eulogising the traditional ruler of Adara chiefdom for serving his community and Kaduna State with dedication.
The President appealed to all who call Kaduna home to do their best to uphold peace in their respective communities.
He warned that chaos and anarchy tend to worsen and exacerbate whatever issues are agitating a community.
Buhari added, “Violence shatters and divides people and stifles the prospect of any community that succumbs to its tragic logic.
“The Federal Government commends the efforts of the Kaduna State Government in responding to and managing the crisis.
“More federal security assets are being provided at the request of the Kaduna State Government to help uphold and keep the peace.
“The Federal Government will continue to work to ensure that more security assets are recruited and deployed across the country to protect all citizens going about their lawful business and to reinforce the authority of the government.”
Buhari also welcomed the decision of the Kaduna State Government and its local governments to build and provide facilities for the take-off of more police divisions and civil defence offices in the state.
“On their part, citizens also have a duty to be law-abiding in their conduct and within their communities.
“There is a need to avoid violence as a tool of negotiation or obtaining advantage, and learn to listen to each other and commit to resolving differences through peaceful means.
“Kaduna, once the home of the Premier and home of the New Nigerian must not earn itself a new name – home of violence.
“The federal security agencies will hunt and prosecute all those who sponsored these acts of violence,” he said.
