    Diphtheria Disease: Kaduna govt alert citizens on outbreak

    The Kaduna State Ministry of Health has confirmed cases of the diphtheria disease in some communities in Kafanchan, Jema’a Local Government Area (LGA) of the State.

    The confirmation was sequel to several reports made about residents in Takau Ward, Kafanchan A and Kafanchan B wards, exhibiting symptoms listed as difficulty in breathing, high fever, cough, general body weakness, sore throat, and neck swelling.

    In a statement signed on Friday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Kaduna State, Muhammad Lawal Shehu said “upon learning about the unfortunate loss of lives in the affected communities, Uba Sani, Governor of Kaduna State immediately directed the Kaduna State Ministry of Health to send an emergency team to investigate these cases.

    A preliminary report from the Ministry revealed that the outbreak of diphtheria in Kafanchan had its first recorded case in the beginning of July, 2023”.

    “Governor Sani, while commending the health officials for their prompt response to the health emergency, urged them to continue to carry out their tasks diligently to ensure that the disease is contained and subsequently eradicated”.

    “Actions taken by the Ministry so far include the movement of affected cases to adequately equipped hospitals for proper management, active case searches, contact tracing and intensive community sensitization in all affected communities and surrounding areas.

    “In line with these efforts, residents of Kaduna State are advised to take steps to prevent the spread of the disease and protect our communities. Residents should ensure that they: Wash their hands frequently with soap and water, avoid close contact with people who are sick, cover their mouths and noses when coughing or sneezing.

    “Stay home from work or school if they are sick, stay active and walk everyday to boost immunity, report any suspected cases of diphtheria in their surrounding communities”.

    Strange disease kills 10 children in Kafanchan

    About 10 children between the ages of three and 13 have been reported to have lost their lives by yet to be identified suspected strange respiratory infection which broke out in Kafanchan, Jama’a Local government area of Kaduna state.

    It was learned that the disease outbreak forced many primary and secondary schools to be shut down while authorities launched an investigation.

    Chief Medical Director of Sir Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa Memorial Hospital, Dr Isaac Nathaniel confirmed the outbreak to journalists in Kafanchan.

    Also, Chairman of Jema’a Local Government, Comrade Yunana Markus Barde, confirmed the outbreak of the strange disease, calling on the citizens to be proactive and proceed to the hospital whenever they discover children from 0-13 years are confronted with certain symptoms.

    The Council Chairman listed the symptoms to include; difficulty in breathing; blockage of airways in the throat; Excessive pains on the throat and runny Nose.

    He noted that such signs should be noted in the communities to arrest the outbreak from escalating and becoming uncontrollable.

    “Personnel in Primary Healthcare across the local government, traditional institutions, religious leaders, and parents are advised to act accordingly.

    “Some individuals are hiding some of the victims. We should know that the catastrophe is not to their detriment alone but to the society at large.

    “According to the report, the outbreak had already claimed the lives of the victims, which if care is not taken as a result of ignorance and negligence will claim more.”

    Zikpak village in Kafanchan Jama’a local government area of Kaduna State had it own share of the ongoing herdsmen onslaught in Southern Kaduna on Friday night.

    At about 8 pm last night locals began distress calls after heavily armed herdsmen invaded their communities shooting sporadically making locals to flee for safety.

    TheNewsGuru.com, TNG gathered that security operatives in the area swung into action and were able to scare the attackers away. But it was discovered Saturday morning that a total of seven persons lost their lives while two persons got injured in the attack.

    There has been a resurgence of herdsmen attack in southern Kaduna Villages in the last four weeks.

    Meanwhile, Governor Nasir El-Rufai has said communal crises persist in the Christian dominated southern part of the state because criminal activities are given ethnic and religious colouration.
