Old Nollywood movies had better storytelling – Kanayo O Kanayo

Veteran actor, Kanayo O Kanayo has said old Nollywood movies had better storytelling even though there was low technical support at the time.

The movie star made this known while reflecting on the current state of things in the movie industry in a recent Instagram post.

Kanayo had shared a throwback movie scene of himself and Charles Okafor, his colleague.

In a brief post accompanying the video, the actor wrote: “This period witnessed better storytelling, lower technical support.”

Kanayo made his acting debut in ‘Living in Bondage,’ a 1992 Nollywood classic.

The 59-year-old has established himself as a household name in the movie industry since then with several awards and recognition to his credit.

Kanayo had earlier slammed critics who taunted him for playing ritual roles in films.

“What’s the link between Kanayo O Kanayo and the role he played as Nicholas? There are certain questions people ask you all the time such that it looks as if these people don’t think,” he had said.

“Let gossipers be. They should go educate themselves. Even among Jesus’ disciples, Luke was a doctor. They all had what they were doing before they were called.

“You take up a role and interpret the script so well, only for viewers to ask if you truly do money rituals. What’s one’s business with that? What people should understand is I have a profession.”

“This is props. If you ever ate it at the time, you’ve eaten your artist fee. It was rented from the canteen.”

TheNewsGuru recalls that back in 1992, Kanayo had his acting debut in ‘Living in Bondage’, a two-part film today regarded as one of the earliest successes in Nigeria’s film production history.

The Imo-born actor would go on to star in over 100 movies.

Kanayo, in September 2020, ventured into the legal profession to fulfil his long-time dream of becoming a lawyer.

“What’s the link between Kanayo O Kanayo and the role he played as Nicholas? There are certain questions people ask you all the time such that it looks as if these people don’t think,” he had said.

Only my sisters and I are alive in my family-Kanayo o Kanayo

Veteran actor, Kanayo O Kanayo has said only he and his sisters are alive in his immediate family.

He took to Instagram on Saturday to share a never-before-seen black and white photo of his family members.

“My lineage. My father, Mr Donatus Onyekwere, My mother , Ezinne Isabella Onyekwere, my elder brother, John Onyekwere, and my younger sister , Chinasaokwu, Cordelia was not born as at this time, 1965/66,” he captioned it.

“To God be all the glory, it’s just me and my sisters that are still in this land of the living. I am a full Orphanage, having lost both parents and only brother.”

TheNewsGuru recalls that Kanayo had said the fact that he acts as a cultist in movies does not make him one.

“Whether we like it or not, this is Africa where we respect seniority, especially when an elder or leader has not brought themselves to a point where they would be insulted. I guess some of these people were raised in places where they don’t know about cultural values.

It is most unfortunate that even when one plays certain roles, some youths cannot distinguish between one and the character. Just because one acted as a criminal on TV, some persons see the actor as a criminal. Meanwhile, an actor has to be flexible. Acting as a ‘ritualist’ does not mean one is a ritualist in real life. Anyway, I see those who think that way as uneducated, uninformed and having complex problems. We need to redefine the word, ‘youth’, in Nigeria. Being a youth does not mean one has to be irresponsible”, he said.

Popular actor, Kanayo O Kanayo has declared that though he acts as a cultist in movies, he is not one.

According to him: “Many of our youths are not focused and they see the social media as a place to get back at some people. The most unfortunate thing is that they abuse the privilege they have. Even people who cannot speak before one now think they have the opportunity to rubbish one. However, those things don’t affect me because if one has got to a particular stage in life, there are people one should not respond to. Whenever anybody posts a comment that I don’t consider to be ‘worthy’, I go to the person’s page to check who they are following and who is following them. Imagine getting to such a page and finding out that the person has only five followers but is following over 10,000 people. Many of these people are irresponsible and their stock-in-trade is to make negative comments on social media. As for me, I don’t join issues with such people.

It is ‘Un-African’ for a man to kneel while proposing to a woman-Kanayo O Kanayo

Veteran actor, Kanayo O. Kanayo says it is wrong for an African man to kneel while trying to propose to a woman he plans to marry.

The outspoken role interpreter made this known via his Instagram page on Tuesday, August 18, 2020.

According to him, it is not African culture for a man to kneel while proposing to woman, maintaining that it was a culture copied from the western world.

“I’m an African and I stand with Pete Edochie on what he said. It is un-African today to knee down to propose to a woman. I’m an African to that level. Like we always preach it is not all you see on TV that you copy,” he said.

”It is an Instagram lifestyle. It doesn’t stop you from living it. Live it the way you want. We are not also saying you must live with us in our stone age.”

“Because when we talk about this, some people who think they are more intelligent than us tell us we are coming from the stone age. Don’t worry, live your technology age but it is not part of our culture.”
