  • Nollywood practitioners lament over sexual harassment

Nollywood actor ,Kanayo O Kanyao says he receives calls about sexual harassment in Nollywood from time to time.

The veteran actor in a chat with Reuters Foundation said that actresses call him every day to say they are being pressured to sleep with producers.

Some other practitioners in the industry verified his statement.

“There are a lot of people abusing their position and demanding sexual favours. I have had to turn down jobs, walk out of sets,” said Dorothy Njemanze, an actress in the industry.

“There are plenty, plenty times I didn’t get a part because I didn’t agree to sleep with somebody.”

According to the practitioners, sexual harassment is inevitable in Nollywood.

On her part, Eeefy Ike said people no longer sees it as a problem if you complain about it.

But actress Eeefy Ike said if you complained, people within the industry would wonder why you were making a fuss.

“I’ve worked in Hollywood and had experience with harassment there. The difference is that, in Africa, we don’t have any functional laws.

“There is also a lot of poverty. In Hollywood, if acting doesn’t work out, you can always go and get another job. In Nigeria, it’s difficult to get another job so there is (more) pressure on women to sleep with powerful men.”

A sexual harassment saga involving Harvey Weinstein has rocked Hollywood in recent weeks, with several A-list actresses including Lupita Nyongo, making accusations against the movie mogul.

  • Government must not play politics with ASUU —Kanayo O Kanayo

Versatile Nollywood actor, Kanayo O Kanyo has stated his opinion over the lingering ASUU strike action triggered by the failure of the federal government to meet the union’s demands.

The Professor Johnbull actor in an Instagram post said that the federal government and ASUU have a lot of work to do to resolve the issue at hand. He noted that just as Universities are sponsored by NGOs abroad, ASUU should also seek for other avenues for funding.

He wrote:” Hello Proximate People, a great evening salutation. Dress the way you want to be addressed. I was just dressing up for Lectures before the ASUU strike. Does the Government sponsor the Education sector abroad ? Why are there no strikes in the institutions in the West? Many nonGovernmental organizations fund the sector and relieve the Government of the burden of the management and control of this critical sector. A poorly managed education sector will only produce half -baked products. Government must not play Politics with ASUU, so also must ASUU also statutorily seek for other funding modules. Enjoy a pleasant weekend” #OverAndOut
