    Popular make-up artist sent to prison for naira abuse

    Abdullahi Huseini, a make -up artist, has been sentenced to six months in prison by a Federal High Court sitting in Kano, for abusing and mutilating the Nigerian currency.

    TheNewsGuru reports that Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC) arrested Huseini, accusing him of defacing and abusing the Naira during his wedding celebration.

    “The convict was arrested following credible intelligence on his involvement in the deliberate mutilation of the Nigerian currency by spraying it at his own wedding celebration,” a statement by the EFCC read.

    Justice S.M. Shuaibu handed down the sentence after Huseini pleaded guilty to a one-count charge bordering on the abuse of the naira, brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

    The charge read, “That you, Abdullahi Musa Huseini, on the 6th day of December, 2024, at Ali Jita Event Centre, Kano, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court whilst dancing during a social event tampered with the sum N100,000.00 (One Hundred Thousand Naira) in 1000 notes denomination issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria by spraying in the said occasion and you thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 21(1) of the Central Bank Act, 2007.”

    During the court proceedings, the prosecution counsel, Zarami Mohammed, presented the facts of the case and tendered evidence to support the charge. Upon review, Justice Shuaibu found the defendant guilty and sentenced him accordingly.

    Upon arraignment, Huseini pleaded guilty to the charge, prompting the prosecution counsel, Zarami Mohammed, to present the facts of the case and tender evidence before the court. Delivering judgment, Justice Shuaibu found him guilty as charged and sentenced him to six months imprisonment without an option of fine.

    “Investigations revealed that Huseini willfully defaced and abused the Naira notes in defiance of warnings and campaigns against the practice by the EFCC,” the statement added.

    With no option of fine, Huseini will serve the full six-month term as Nigeria continues its crackdown on Naira abuse.

    BREAKING: Court nullifies law used to dethrone deposed Emir Bayero

    A Federal High Court sitting Kano has declared the Kano Emirates Council Law repealed by the Kano State Government, which led to the dethroning of Emir Aminu Ado Bayero and other emirs null and void.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that the court ruled in favour of a kingmaker, Aminu Babba Danagundi, who challenged the law’s propriety.

    Justice Abdullahi Muhammad Liman nullified the law, ordering parties to maintain the status quo.

    It would be recalled that the Kano State Government had repealed the law, leading to the dethronement of Emir Bayero and the reversal of the creation of four emirates.

    The government had also re-appointed Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano, who was previously dethroned in 2020.

    The court’s ruling sets aside all steps taken by the government to implement the repealed law.

  • Court ‘sentences’ chicken to death in Kano state

    A Kano state court has ordered the killing of a cockerel in the state for constituting noise pollution.

    The ruling was given by the court after a man complained that the chicken owned by his neighbour has been depriving him of sleep.

    The court ordered the owner of the chicken to kill it before Friday, March 7, 2023.

    Magistrate Halima Wali on Tuesday heard that Malam Yusuf’s bird deprived the neighbourhood of their deserved rest and declared the cockerel a nuisance.

    However, Yusuf told the court that he had bought the bird to celebrate Good Friday and pleaded with the court to allow him keep the bird until the Christian holy day before killing it for a family feast.

    Judge Wali heeded to his plea but warned him against allowing the fowl roam the area and disturb residents.

    She also asked him to ensure he slaughtered the bird on Friday as promised, or face a penalty from the court.

    Kano court sentences two brothers to prison for throwing passes at a married woman

    A sharia court sitting in Kano has ordered that two brothers namely, Saifullahi Hamisu, Mujahid Hamisu and one Hassana Surajo, be remanded in prison custody for allegedly making amorous advances to a married woman in the state.

    The three of them were sent to prison on Wednesday, fourth of January.

    The defendants, who are residents of a community,  Bachirawa Quarters Kano, are facing a three-count charge of aiding, abetting, and throwing passes at  a married woman.

    The Prosecutor, Mr Aliyu Abideen, told the court that one Abubakar Ahmad of Fagge Quarters Kano reported the matter at SCID Bompai Kano on Dec.22, 2022.

    Abideen alleged that on the same date at about 4:00pm the defendant criminally conspired and trespassed into the house of the complainant situated at Dorayi Quarters, Kano.

    “The defendants pretended to be relatives of the complainant’s wife (Fatima Alhassan).

    “As a result, the complainant discovered that the first defendant Saifullahi was enticing his wife and were chatting on WhatsApp.

    “The said Saifullahi was the ex-boyfriend of the complaint’s wife.”

    Saifullahi pleaded not guilty while the second and third defendants pleaded guilty to the charge.

    He said that the offence contravened the Kano State Shari’a Law.

    Kano Court sentences Sheik Nasiru to death by hanging for blasphemy

    Sheik AbdulJabar Nasiru, has been sentenced to death for blasphemy against the Prophet of Islam, by Kano Senior Magistrate, Justice Ibrahim Sarki Yola in Kano.

    Justice Ibrahim Sarki Yola found Sheik AbdulJabar Nasiru Kabara guilty of blasphemy and all charges levelled against him, where he was accused of making unremarkable statements against the prophet Muhammad.

    The defendant, in adopting his final written addresses dated and filed Sept.20, urged the court to dismiss the case filed by the Kano State Government against him and order the state to apologise to him.

    But the prosecution counsel, Mamman Lawan-Yusufari, SAN, closed the case after four witnesses testified while the defendant presented one witness and tendered 24 books and memory card evidence to prove his case.

    The defendant noted that he was the only witness available.

    He was subsequently sentenced to death by hanging by the presiding magistrate.

    A Kano State High Court has sentenced a fake lawyer, Hanga Abdullahi, to two years imprisonment for forgery.

    The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), in a statement on Tuesday, said Abdullahi was arraigned before Justice Aisha Mahmud on Friday, when he was pronounced guilty of the four counts levelled against him by the agency.

    At the point of arraignment, the convict reportedly pleaded not guilty to the counts, thereby setting the stage for trial.

    The statement read in part, “In the course of the trial, the prosecution counsel, Musa Isah, called four witnesses and tendered documents that were admitted as exhibits by the court.

    “In his judgment, Justice Mahmud found the defendant guilty on count three but discharged and acquitted him on counts 1, 2 and 4.

    “He was subsequently sentenced to two years’ imprisonment or a fine option of N250,000.

    “Hanga’s journey to prison started when a petitioner alleged that he sold property meant for a specified buyer already named in a document to one of his relations and forged the prepared document to reflect the name of the new buyer. He also converted the proceeds of the sale of the property to his personal use.”

    Kano court sentences man to 24 years imprisonment over Facebook post

    A Kano State High Court on Tuesday sentenced a Kano-born atheist, Mubarak Bala, to 24 years imprisonment for blasphemy.

    The convict, whose age and address were not provided by the court, was earlier arraigned on an 18-count charge bordering on blasphemy, incitement, contempt of religion and breach of public peace.

    The convict had pleaded guilty to the charges.

    Delivering judgment, Justice Farouk Lawan, sentenced the convict to 24 years imprisonment.

    The judge also ordered that the sentence term would commence from the day that the convict was arrested.

    He also ordered that the sentences for all the 18 charges for which Bala was convicted should run concurrently.

    Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Mr Muhammad Sani, told the court that the convict had on April 28, 2020, made a blasphemous post on his Facebook page.

    Sanusi said the post was against Allah (SWA) and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and had caused a major outrage in the city of Kano, where the convict hails from.

    According to the prosecutor, the offence contravened the provision of Sections 114 and 210 of the Penal Code.

    The Defence Counsel, Mr James Ibor, pleaded for leniency on behalf of his client, who concurred and promised not to repeat the blasphemous comments.

    Blasphemy: Kano court discharge, acquits Faruq Umar; set aside death sentence of another

    A Kano high court of appeal sitting at Audu Bako secretariat has discharged and acquitted one Faruq Umar earlier sentence to 10 years jail on offence of blasphemy against Allah.

    Faruq Umar was convicted and sentenced to jail by upper Shari’a Court judge Aliyu Mohammad Kani, Filling Hockey division last year for violating section 382 of the Sharia penal code law 2000.

    Faruq was 13 year old when he committed the said offense but the judgment was delivered till 2020 when he was 17 years old.

    In his judgment on the appeal, Justice Nasiru Saminu, nullified the judgment of the lower court for lacking credibility.

    Also, Justice Saminu has set aside the judgment of Upper Sharia court that sentence one Yahaya Sheriff to death by hanging and ordered for immediate retrial.

    In his judgment on an appeal, Justice Saminu declared that the ruling on the lower court was full of irregularities and thereby lack reputable merit to stand.

    Yahaya was found guilty of blasphemy for altering foul language against prophet Muhammad and sentenced to death.

    While ruling on the appeal Justice Saminu insisted Yahaya was not given a fare hearing. He directed the retrial of the case to another Sharia judge.

    Sexual Harassment: Kano Court remands lecturer

    A Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting in Kano on Tuesday ordered the remand of a 36-year-old lecturer, Ali Shehu, in prison custody for breach of trust and sexually harassing his female student.

    The accused, a lecturer of Kano State School of Technology, is facing trial on a two-count charge of breach of official trust and attempt to commit an offence, contrary to Sections 95 and 98 of the Penal Code.

    Chief Magistrate Muhammad Idris ordered the remand of the accused person and adjourned the matter until Oct. 15, for sentence.

    Earlier, the Prosecutor, ASP Badamasi Gawuna, had told the court that the accused committed the offence on Aug. 19, in Kano.

    He said this followed a sting operation conducted by the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-corruption Commission.

    Gawuna said on the same date at about 11 a.m, the accused who happens to be a lecturer of School of Technology Kano, took one of his female students (name withheld) to Ummi Plaza in Kano, to help him in marking the final semester exams.

    “In the process, the accused admitted to touching the said victim’s private part,’’ the prosecutor said.

    The accused pleaded guilty to the charge.

  • Kano court bans posting of more Ganduje bribery videos

    Following an interim injunction sought by the Kano State governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, a Kano State High Court has granted an order restraining Daily Nigerian and its publisher, Ja’afar Ja’afar, from publishing videos of the governor allegedly collecting bribe.

    The online news platform has been under scrutiny following the publication it made of the governor collecting kickbacks from an anonymous contractor.

    The governor has since denied the allegation and has also asked the court to declare the publication as wrongful and a defamation of character.

    In its sitting on Monday, November 19, the court restrained the news platform, its publisher and their agents from “publishing, sharing or spreading videos injurious to the plaintiff/applicant pending the determination of the substantive application slated for hearing on the 6th of December 2018”.

    This development comes a week after the contractor behind the videos had declared that he is ready to testify before the Kano state house of Assembly committee investigating the matter.

    The contractor, writing through his lawyer, Saeed Muhd Twada, offered to testify before the panel that was set up by the House of Assembly to investigate the allegations.

    In a series of videos in Ja’afar’s possession, the governor was alleged to have received a total of $5 million in installments from a certain contractor on several occasions. Six different video clips have gone viral on social media showing the governor accepting bundles of dollar notes from the yet-to-be-identified contractor.
