NNPP reacts over conduct of by-elections in Kano

The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has commended INEC and security agencies for ensuring credible by-elections in Shanono/Bagwai and Ghari constituencies, Kano State.

NNPP National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, on Saturday in Abuja also praised Kano residents for allowing a transparent voting exercise during the by-elections.

He, however, condemned the call for cancellation of the two elections.

Johnson described the cancellation call, allegedly over violence, credited to All Progressives Congress (APC) spokesman Felix Morka, as frivolous and devoid of facts and reality.

He maintained that Morka’s position did not reflect actual events, stressing that the NNPP candidate won overwhelmingly, as duly declared by INEC.

Johnson stated that the two constituency elections were free, fair, credible and peaceful, adding that as NNPP strongholds, the results could not have been otherwise.

“We must state unequivocally that there were no widespread irregularities during the election, contrary to the misleading narrative being peddled by the APC,” Johnson declared.

He added that Kano remained the NNPP stronghold, making it inconceivable that the APC could have won, as electoral history and outcomes in recent times proved otherwise.

“The results have now been validated by the INEC commissioner, who adjudged them free, fair, credible, and validly won by NNPP candidates,” Johnson emphasised.

He commended Kano people for resisting nefarious activities during the elections.

“The NNPP salutes the patriotism of INEC officials and security agencies for demonstrating professionalism and courage throughout the exercise,” Johnson said.

He added that both INEC and the Police in Kano attested to the credibility of the by-election, which went smoothly without violence.

“NNPP therefore urges Nigerians and the international community to disregard any claim of violence in today’s by-election in Kano State,” Johnson said.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Kano State says it is fully prepared to conduct peaceful, credible, and transparent by-elections in parts of the state on Saturday, Aug. 16.

The State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Amb. Abdu Zango, disclosed this while briefing journalists in Kano on Thursday.

Zango said the State Assembly by-elections would take place in Bagwai/Shanono and Ghari (Kunchi)/Tsanyawa Local Government Areas.

He said non-sensitive materials were dispatched to the local governments three weeks ago, sorted according to registration areas and polling units, while sensitive materials had arrived for onward distribution.

“We are starting the election at 8:30 a.m. prompt, in line with standard directives, and all arrangements have been completed,” he said.

He added that all 1,400 ad hoc staff had been trained, deployed, and were already at their respective locations to ensure the smooth conduct of the exercise.

The REC explained that the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) devices had been configured, tested, and charged, noting that only voters with valid Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) would be allowed to vote.

On security, Zango said the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) had assured the commission of adequate personnel and resources to guarantee safety before, during, and after the polls.

He said stop-and-search operations and other security measures had already commenced in the affected areas.

“We have zero tolerance for lack of transparency or partisanship. INEC remains neutral. The only political party we recognise is the citizens, and whoever they choose will be declared winner,” he said.

Zango said the Ghari election was a court-ordered rerun in 10 polling units, with 5,200 registered voters, contested by the APC and NNPP.

He added that about 75,000 registered voters would participate in the Bagwai election, which has candidates from 11 political parties.

Zango urged voters to come out en masse to exercise their franchise without fear, assuring them of safety and the integrity of the process.

  • Kano Assembly slams suspension on Rano LG chairman

Kano Assembly slams suspension on Rano LG chairman

Kano State House of Assembly on Wednesday suspended the Chairman of Rano Local Government Council, Alhaji Naziru Ya’u, for three months over alleged misconduct.

The suspension followed the adoption of a report by the House Committee on Public Petition during plenary presided over by the Speaker, Alhaji Jibril Falgore.

Presenting the report, the Committee Chairman and Majority Leader of the House, Alhaji Lawan Hussaini (Dala-NNPP) said the investigation was prompted by a petition signed by nine of the 10 councillors in the council.

He said the petition accused the chairman of financial recklessness, sale of shops, and diversion of fertilizer meant for the local government, among other allegations.

“Ya’u confessed to increasing the price of fertiliser by N2,000 per bag during the last sales exercise, in violation of the state government’s directive that the commodity be sold at N20,000.

“He reportedly claimed the increment was for “logistics support,” Hussaini explained.

According to him, the committee’s findings indicated a serious misunderstanding within the Rano council, and a lack of synergy between the chairman and councillors.

Hussaini added that the chairman diverted a feeder road project from Kwanar Juma-Gada to another ward without approval from the state Ministry of Local Government or the council.

The House leader said although the chairman denied the allegations, the committee recommended the suspension in line with Section 128 of the Constitution and Section 55 (1–6) of the Kano State Local Government Law, 2006.

The committee also recommended the immediate submission of Rano LGA’s 2025 financial statement and the appointment of the Vice Chairman to serve in an acting capacity during the suspension.

After deliberations, members unanimously adopted the recommendations, effectively suspending the chairman and placing the council under temporary oversight.

Police warn underage against riding Keke Napep

The police command in Kano State has warned underage against riding tricycles, popularly known as “Keke Napep” or “Adaidaita Sahu,” within the Kano metropolis.

This is contained in a statement by the command Spokesman, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa in Kano on Monday.

Kiyawa said the warning became necessary because 16 serious road accidents that had so far been reported in August 2025, resulting in injuries and property damage, were caused by underage drivers.

He said, henceforth, an underage driver, would be arrested and prosecuted.

Kiyawa called on parents and guardians to refrain from allowing their underage children to operate tricycles, as this would attract severe penalties under the law for both the rider and the tricycle owner.

He explained that the command had set up an enforcement team to ensure compliance with traffic rules and regulations.

“Residents are encouraged to report incidents of underage tricycle riding, reckless driving, or other traffic violations to the nearest police station or through emergency numbers: 08032419754, 08123821575, and 09029292926,” he said.
