Let rule of law prevail in Kano emirate crisis – NNPP

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has called for caution in handling the Emirate Stool  tussle in Kano State.

NNPP Founder, Dr Boniface Aniebonam said in Lagos on Thursday that the Law should be strictly followed in resolving the controversy.

Aniebonam, who is also the founder of the Government Approved Freight Forwarders, advised that parties concerned must apply caution so as not to plunge Kano into avoidable conflagration.

He disclosed that the conflagration could  impede the nascent democratic process Nigeria had been nurturing overtime.

“Kano state is the only state run by the NNPP in Nigeria. As a peace loving political party that believes so much in God and Law, it is our sincere appeal that everyone concerned in this matter must thread softly.

“We must consider the overall interest of the people of Kano above self interest.”

“We are marvelled at the degeneracy of law and order in that state under the leadership of NNPP and the contending forces for control of the Emirate stool.

“What is crucial in the titanic struggle for control of the Kano Royalty  is that both warring royal groups should ensure the rule of law is strictly adhered to,” he said.

Aniebonam said that judgment/ judgments of Courts of competent jurisdictions should be fully and respectfully complied with.

“This advice has become paramount and necessary because if Kano boils, the whole nation may be negatively affected one way or the other.

“Let wise counsel prevail between two brothers in the interest of public peace and emirate sanctity.”

He lauded President Bola Tinubu and Elders of Kano Emirate for their show of concern and efforts over the peace of the society and Kano state in particular.

Emirship tussle: No protest in Kano – Police

The Police Command in Kano has alerted the public to possible plans by some groups to incite violence in the state over the lingering Emirship tussle.

Its Commissioner, Usaini Gumel, while briefing newsmen on Sunday in Kano, said that credible intelligence suggests that some individuals plan to stage protests which could potentially lead to violence.

He identified areas of concern to include Iyaka Road, Kofar Naisa, Kofar Nasarawa, Brigade, Airport Road, Janbulo and Sani Mainenge areas in the metropolis.

“The Police, in collaboration with other security agencies, have taken proactive measures to prevent the escalation of tensions and maintain law and order.

“Any attempt to hold processions or gatherings that may trigger violence will be met with swift action, and those responsible will face the full force of the law.

“Residents are advised to remain calm, avoid unlawful gatherings or processions, and report any suspicious activities or individuals to security agents for prompt response.

“Joint security teams have been deployed to strategic locations across the state to ensure peace and order.

“The Police have also embarked on aggressive patrols in and outside the metropolis to deal with any form of security threat.

“The joint security committee has adopted a comprehensive strategy to confront any form of threat in and outside the dissolved five Emirates.

“The security measures will prevent violence and maintain the safety and security of all residents in Kano State,” he said.

  • Emirship Tussle: FG trying to cause chaos in order to declare state of emergency in Kano – NNPP

Emirship Tussle: FG trying to cause chaos in order to declare state of emergency in Kano – NNPP

The Kano state ruling party, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has issued out strong warning to the FG against declaring a State of Emergency in the State following the current Emirship tussle.

The NNPP through the party chairman said via a statement that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is using security agencies to subvert the will of the people in the state.

The statement reads: “The on-going situation should not be an excuse to declare a state of emergency which would then translate to achieving what Ganduje and the APC could not achieve through their regrettable actions up to the Supreme Court as the people of Kano are steadfast to resist attempts to subvert their mandate freely given to Governor Abba Yusuf of NNPP,”

USING SECURITY AGENTS TO INTIMIDATE THE PEOPLE OF KANO STATE OVER EMIRSHIP STOOL POSES GRAVE DANGER TO NIGERIA’S DEMOCRACY

The on -going siege on Kano State, especially, the Palace of the Emir of Kano by soldiers and other security agents is nothing but a show of shame and a threat to the democracy which some Nigerians shed their blood to enthrone.
Nigerians were embarrassed since early Saturday morning to see the deployment of soldiers and other security agents around the vicinity of the Emir of Kano’s Palace, in what seems like plan to overturn the Constitutionally backed restructuring and restoration of the lost glory of the Kano State Emirate Council. This is a process which went through the whole gamut of law amendment processes.

The drafters of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, in their wisdom have given the different tiers of Government in the country (Federal, State, and Local Government) different spheres of responsibilities and the administration of Local Governments and Chieftaincy matters exclusively to the States.

So, since when did it become the Constitutional responsibility of the Federal Government to be installing traditional rulers.

The Kano State Legislature vested with the powers to repeal, amend or enact laws having duly followed established principles repealed the Kano Emirate Law (2019), which removed the 14th Emir of Kano, HRM Mohammed Sanusi 11, and restored him to office.

How did this warrant the deployment of soldiers and other security agents to Kano State to reverse a law duly passed by the State legislature.

The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) therefore faulted alleged forceful return of deposed Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, to Kano through the might of the Federal Government. This was a threat to peace and harmony in the state.

The party’s position followed claims by Kano Deputy Governor, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, that the former Emir was brought to Kano on Friday surrounded by soldiers through the office of a highly placed government official from Abuja.

NNPP is aware of the grand plan to snatch Kano State by all means, following the earlier failed attempt to grab it through the Courts. We are therefore advising these desperate politicians to desist from testing the resolve of Kano electorates who freely and overwhelmingly gave their mandate to Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf as the Governor of Kano State.

We are using this medium to appeal to Elders in the country, leaders of thought, and Nigerians in general as well as the International Community to prevail on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to call to Order members of his party who are bent on throwing Kano State and indeed the entire North into turmoil just to realise their selfish ambition. Since those affected have approached the Court of law for redress, they should allow the process to complete its cycle instead of resorting to Arm – Twisting the Governor of Kano State.

The unleashing of security agencies controlled by the APC led Federal Government to coerce and the stultify the government of Kano State from performing its constitutionally donated duties is a gross violation of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and a fundamental breach of the hallowed principles of Separation of Powers as enunciated in the 1999 Construction of Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) and must be vehemently resisted by all lovers of our democracy.

The on-going scenario in Kano where soldiers are deployed to upturn a properly enacted law by the State legislature and State Police Commissioner will bluntly refuse an instruction by a Sitting Governor as we are witnessing in Kano portend grave danger to our democracy.

The refusal of the State Commissioner of Police to carry out the order of Governor Abba Yusuf to arrest the deposed Emir for attempting to cause violence and public disorder through his conduct was disrespecting to the Governor as the Chief Security Officer in the State.

The position of the Commissioner of Police Kano State on the ex-parte order is amusing! How often have our good friends obeyed court orders? Now they want to “obey” an order (if it was indeed granted), that was granted after the act was completed. We all know that “you cannot restrain a completed act” since the government action had taken place long before the controversial court’s pronouncement.

It should be noted that when Muhammadu Sanusi 11 was deposed, he did not resort to any act that could lead to violence and destabilize the State, instead he abided by the law. Nigerians expected the same from the now deposed emir.

The on-going situation should not be an excuse to declare a state of emergency which would then translate to achieving what Ganduje and the APC could not achieve through their regrettable actions up to the Supreme Court as the people of Kano are steadfast to resist attempts to subvert their mandate freely given to Governor Abba Yusuf of NNPP.

Emir’s Crisis: President Tinubu told not to use power to aggravate crisis

President Tinubu has been cautioned to stop using power to cause crises that could cripple Kano through his government’s alleged interference in the ongoing Emirate Council impasse.

This was made known by the Council of Ulamas via a statement signed and released by its chairman and 21 other members on Saturday afternoon in Kano.

The Council of Ulamas is worried that recent events in the Emirate, if not carefully handled, could escalate and degenerate into chaos.

He said, “Therefore, it is imperative for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take all necessary steps to maintain peace in the state.”

“While it is the purview of the State House of Assembly to enact laws for good governance, the State Government needs the cooperation and support of the Federal Government.”

He reminded that “the State Assembly amended the Kano State Emirates Law, and the Governor assented. One person took the case to court, claiming that the law violates his fundamental human rights. He is entitled to his rights.

“The State Governor also has a responsibility as the Chief Executive of the state. As the act in question has already been completed, there is no need for violent enforcement of any order or violent resistance to it. We vehemently oppose any measures that will escalate conflict in the state.

“Mr. President, as the leader of the nation, should not allow the contest for a royal stool to degenerate into violence. We are calling on Mr. President to allow the people of Kano State to resolve these issues amicably without the use of force and without loss of lives.”

He added, “Kano State is one of the most peaceful states in Nigeria; therefore, we, the undersigned, call on both contending parties to use civil means in resolving their differences to allow peace to reign in the state.”

“As major stakeholders in the state, we want to assure Mr. President that we shall reach out to contenders to resolve the matter peacefully.”

  • Fuel scarcity cripples socio-economic activities in Kano

Fuel scarcity cripples socio-economic activities in Kano

Petrol scarcity has crippled socio-economic activities in Kano and its environs, with residents wasting many man-hours looking for fuel.

The situation has forced motorists to abandon their routine schedules to search for petrol at filling stations.

The development is also telling on the city’s socio-economic lives as many of the residents have closed their business premises, while others have suspended their planned visits to friends and relations.

Most of the streets in the metropolis have been deserted while many motorists have abandoned their cars due to fuel scarcity.

Some residents were forced to trek long distances to reach their various destinations as there are few commercial vehicles on the roads.

It was also observed that students of secondary and tertiary Institutions have resorted to trekking due to the shortage of commercial vehicles on the roads.

Black market Petrol vendors have capitalised on the situation to sell a gallon of fuel at N6,000.

Alhaji Abubakar Shehu of Dorayi quarters, told NAN that he spent nothing less than 11 hours in a queue at a filling station to buy fuel.

Shehu decried the situation and called on the Federal Government and other stakeholders to urgently address the problem.

Isa Musa, a civil servant, said he had to opt for a ride to go to his office, after spending almost two hours at the bus stop.

“Public buses became so scarce this morning, and I just ordered a ride to take me to my office at an exorbitant cost.

“I would have turned back to go home but I have a very important meeting to attend and it was almost time for the meeting,” he said.

Another civil servant, who gave his name as Rakiya Musa, said “the federal government should declare a state of emergency on the current scarcity of the petroleum products, saying it has crippled socio-economic activities across the country.

“Transportation fares have gone up within days of this fuel scarcity. How do they want us to survive,” Musa asked.

Abdulmuni Isa, a commercial vehicle operator, said: “Increasing the transportation fare is the only way out for us transporters because to get fuel these days is not easy.

“You will notice that most filling stations in Kano are now out of stock, leaving long queues of vehicles stretching into distances in some NNPC stations,” Isa added.

When contacted, the Chairman of Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), Kano chapter, Alhaji Gana Girigire, blamed the NNPCL for the petrol scarcity

“It is not our fault, we have sent over 100 trucks to various centers where we buy this commodity, but it is not available,” he said.

  • We have no reason to suspend Gov Yusuf – NNPP

We have no reason to suspend Gov Yusuf – NNPP

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has denied the purported suspension of Gov. Abba Yusuf of Kano from the party.

The party Acting National Chairman, Dr Ahmed Ajuji ,speaking in an interview with newsmen on Thursday in Abuja, said that the party had no any reason to suspend Yusuf from NNPP.

“For the record , Gov. Yusuf is a bona fide member of our great party and a worthy ambassador of NNPP, whose leadership and unprecedented achievements in Kano State is a thing of pride to us, and as such we have no any reason to suspend him.

“In essence, the NNPP did not suspend our governor,” he said.

Ajuji described those claiming to have suspended Yusuf from the NNPP for attending the NNPP national convention as political comedians, hirelings and clowns ,craving for relevance.

“The jokers played back a cracked record and poorly scripted movie of suspension of the Kano State Governor as their sponsors and target audience no longer listen to the endless suspension and expulsion of Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the National Leader of the party.

“These political jobbers were also the ones hired to scuttle Yusuf’s election at the Tribunal, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court, falsely claiming that he was not duly and properly nominated by the party as its candidate for the 2023 general election.

“To God be the glory the Supreme Court Justices ,in their own wisdom ,saw through their lies, and agreed with us and the INEC that Yusuf is a bonafide member of NNPP,” he said.

He said that the same people had at various times instituted several suits in court challenging the leadership of the party and recently tried to scuttle the NEC meeting and the National Convention held on April 5 and April 6.

“The court being a temple of justice and beacon of hope for sustainable democracy in Nigeria dismissed many of their suits, including the one which judgement was given earlier today.

“A court even ordered them to stop parading themselves as members of the party, but because they don’t have any regard for the law, they continue in their contemptuous activities,” he said.

Ajuji said the grouse of these expelled members was the participation of NNPP candidates in various elective positions, in which the party won a governorship, Senate, House of Representatives and State House of Assembly seats.

He said this had enhanced the electoral fortune of NNPP, unlike before when such positions were traded off for personal gains.

“The party is aware of their sponsors and their aim of destabilising it. They have failed as NNPP keeps growing from strength to strength, expanding its frontiers in the nation’s political space.”

He said that the NNPP was  united and strong in fostering sustainable democracy in Nigeria as exemplified in the good governance of Yusuf in Kano State.
