Gov Yusuf denies signing pact with presidency over Supreme Court judgement

Gov. Abba Yusuf of Kano State on Monday dismissed entering into any pact with the Presidency prior to the Jan. 12 Supreme Court judgment that validated his election.

This is contained in a statement by his Director-General, Media and Publicity, Mr Bature Dawakin-Tofa, in Kano on Monday.

Dawakin-Tofa described a document already circulating and indicating a four-term agreement between the governor and the presidency as an imaginary piece devoid of any iota of truth.

He urged the public to disregard a fake agreement claiming the governor had accepted to cross carpet to the ruling APC and other terms of agreement.

“Gov. Yusuf would like to make it abundantly clear that having secured his mandate through popular votes of the good people of Kano, and certified by a fair affirmation of Supreme Court judgment, he would not be intimidated by any political opportunist.

“Let me also remind those political jobbers hiding under the leniency of Mr. President that whatever political decision or direction that would be taken in Kano will be determined within the confines of the rule of law and executive powers vested in the executive governor.

The statement clarified  that the establishment of Kano Elders Council was a personal initiative of the governor to find lasting solutions to solvable problems affecting the state’s socio-economic and political well-being.

It added the governor was not under pressure to form the council.

‘It is on record that the justices of the Supreme Court delivered a landmark Judgment with justice, equity and fairness and largely protected the integrity of the judiciary,” it said.

The governor, however, expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for allowing the level playing ground for justice to prevail through non-interference with the judicial process.

He said the president had demonstrated profound leadership quality by ensuring fair play in spite of being pushed “by some undemocratic elements from Kano and beyond”.

“The president is a true democrat who will not undermine other political parties in the interest of his party.

“However, the president should rather be appreciated for maintaining neutrality, peace and stability in Kano.

” On this single act, the good people of Kano will continue to appreciate Mr President and pray for him to succeed in his administration,” the statement said.

It added that the governor had several opportunities to meet the president but that in all of his visits, the discussions centered around the development of Kano State.

The convicts: Korau Sani, Elisha Ayuba, Irimiya Timothy, Auwalu Jafar and Mustafa Haladu, attached to the Sani Abacha Youth Centre, were convicted on a two-count charge bordering on criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide.

Delivering judgement, the Chief Judge of Kano State, Justice Dije Abdu-Aboki, held that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.

“I hereby sentence the defendants to two years imprisonment for conspiracy, and to death by hanging, for homicide,” the Chief Judge held.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Mr Lamido Sorondinki, had informed the court that the defendants committed the offence on Jan. 22, 2022, at Sabon Titi Panshekara, Kano.

Sorondinki said that on the same date at about 10:00 a.m, the defendants conspired and attacked the deceased (Ahmed) while he was crossing Sabon Titi Panshekara Road.

“The defendants came out of a tricycle and started beating the deceased with a long wooden hard stick (Gora) and in the process, the deceased held the stick.

“In the process, the first defendant used a long sharp knife and stabbed the deceased on his neck and dragged him on the ground and put him in the said tricycle and took him away.

“As a result, the deceased sustained grievous injuries and a swollen face,” the prosecution counsel said.

He said the victim was later taken to Kutau Police Division and was rushed to the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Kano, where he was confirmed dead by a doctor.

The Prosecution presented five witnesses to the court to prove its case.

The defendants, however, denied committing the offence.

According to the prosecutor, the offence contravenes  the provision of Section 97 and 221(b) of the Penal Code.

The defence counsel, Mr Ahmad Muhammad, presented six witnesses including the defendants.

Earlier in their testimony, the defendants claimed that they approached the deceased with a view to arresting him because of some complaint lodged against him but he resisted.

37-year-old rescued from suicide over failed N2m visa deal

The Kano State Fire Service said, on Thursday, that it rescued 37-year-old Saifillahi Rabiu, who allegedly attempted to commit suicide over a failed deal.

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the organisation, Alhaji Saminu Abdullahi, disclosed this in a statement issued in Kano and made available to newsmen.

Abdullahi stated that the incident happened on Thursday morning at State Road, Tarauni Local Government Area of Kano.

“We received a distress call at about 10:07 a.m. from the Ministry of Works and Housing, Kano state, about a suicide attempt by hanging on a tree.

“On receiving the information, we quickly sent our fire fighting vehicle to the scene at 10:10 a.m,” he stated.

According to the statement, Rabiu, a resident of Semegu Quarters, attempted to hang himself over his inability to refund N2 million to those he tried to assist to obtain a travel Visa.

“During interrogation, we gathered that Rabiu connected some people to those that process travel visas to foreign countries, which was successful.

“Those he tried to help, however, rejected the visa, saying it was not the type they paid for and demanded for the refund of their money already paid to the processors.

“We reliably gathered that he was able to raise half-a-million naira only.

“But pressure and threats from the people he wanted to assist made him try to take his own life,” the PRO added.

He further stated that Rabiu was rescued alive and handed over to Zaharaddini of Farm Centre Police Division.

Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, the National Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC), has invited Gov. Abba Yusuf of Kano State to join the APC.

Ganduje offered the invitation on Thursday while addressing stakeholders of the party in Kano.

“I am appealing to governor Yusuf along with his members from the NNPP to defect to the ruling APC at the national level to ensure massive political growth of the state.

“We are also working very hard to ensure more members of the National Assembly from Kano State and others from other political parties to join hands with the progressives as doors of the party remains open for all.

“We will provide an enabling environment for all defectors for the overall political growth of our party and state.

“I want to assure the good people of Kano state that the federal government will continue to initiate policies and programmes that will enhance the well-being of the people.

“I also want to assure you that there is move for other governors from various political parties to joint our party.

“Very soon some governors and members of the National Assembly from other political parties will join the APC,” he said.

According to him, the Kano state chapter of the party had accepted the Supreme Court judgment in good faith and salute President Bola Tinubu for his love for the party.

Reviewing the Kano governorship apex court verdict, Ganduje said the party would create a strong avenue that would unite their members and give room for more people willing to join the party.

The APC national chairman and immediate past governor of Kano state said stakeholders of the party had also expressed appreciation to Tinubu for his support and love for Kano.

According to Ganduje, the stakeholders meeting has resolved that as a progressive and largest political party in Africa, and in line with the initiative the door of APC in Kano remains open for hundreds of new members willing to join.

”The door of the APC is open to wooing new members to the party across the country and in Diaspora as a group or individual level, because of the good governance and sound promises of the party.

“So, in order to enhance unity, progress and development of Kano state, the stakeholders’ meeting expressed commitment to continue to pursue the path of dialogue with individuals, associations or political parties ready to join the APC,” he said.

The APC national chairman appreciated members of the party for their maturity, support and patience during the period of the legal battle and called on them to remain calm and law abiding.

  • We will conduct credible LG elections in Kano – NNPP

We will conduct credible LG elections in Kano – NNPP

The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in Kano State has assured of a free, fair and credible local government election scheduled to hold later in the year.

The Chairman of the party, Alhaji Hashimu Dungurawa, gave the assurance while speaking to newsmen in Kano on Tuesday.

“As a democratic party whose ideals are people-oriented, we will ensure a hitch-free, free and fair local government election later this year,” Dungurawa said.

He said part of the democratic disposition of the NNPP administration in the state was that it allowed all the APC local government chairmen to serve out their tenure.

“When we inherited the APC Local Government Chairmen from the previous administration, we allowed them to continue in office and gave them all their due recognition till their tenure ends soon,” he said.

Dungurawa said the NNPP government extended the same gesture to officers in public service whom they inherited from the APC government, including the then Head of the Civil Service.

He thanked the people of the state for their support and prayers before, during and after the Supreme Court judgment that affirmed Kabir Yusuf as the duly elected executive governor of the state.

He assured that the NNPP administration would continue to deliver dividends of democracy to the people of state so as to enhance their well being.

Such dividends, he said, included provision of quality education, healthcare, water supply, roads as well as security of lives and property.

  • NNPP says Supreme Court judgement is restoration of hope for Kano

NNPP says Supreme Court judgement is restoration of hope for Kano

The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) National Secretary, Dipo Olayoku, has described the Supreme Court judgement affirming the election of Gov. Abba Yusuf of Kano State as the restoration of hope for the people of the state.

Olayoku in an interview on Friday in Abuja said the judgement was also a confirmation of victory God gave NNPP on March 18, 2023.

“The party is just appealing to politicians to try to win election through the ballot boxes and not through the back door.

“I think the Supreme Court has deflated that and we want the other arms of judiciary to also stand up to the truth,” he said.

Olayoku, who is also the Deputy National Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), said that the judgement did not come to the party as a surprise, because everybody knew that NNPP won the March 18, 2023, governorship election in the state.

He said there was no way the All Progressives Congress (APC) could have claimed to have won the election in the state where the NNPP won the presidential election, won two out of three Senatorial seats, and 18 out of 24 House of Assembly seats.

“In the governorship elections, we defeated APC with about 200,000 votes, in the House of Assembly of 40 seats, we have 26. So what will be the yardstick for them to win governorship.

“We thank God that the Supreme Court have restored the hope of the people,” he said.

He said that though the governor was never distracted by the petition in delivering the dividends of democracy to the people of the state, with the outcome from the court he was now poised to do more.

“Now that the court cases have been put behind us, I know the governor is going to be more focused on delivering the dividends of democracy,” he said.

He assured the people of Kano that Yusuf would continue to implement his master plan and blueprint for the state, while building on the template and achievements set by the NNPP leader, Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso, who was once the governor of the state.

“He cannot go below the standard set by Kwankwaso when he was governor.

“If you look at what he has been doing since when he got there, you will discover that he had been hitting the ground running.

“We can guarantee the people of Kano state that there is no cause for alarm. He already has his master plan and he is following it without any disruption,” he said.

Supreme Court verdict: Kano residents await Gov Yusuf’s ‘triumphant entry’ to govt house

Movements along all routes leading to Kano Government House have been restricted by security agents as people await the arrival of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to the State from Abuja.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports a panel of Justices of the Supreme Court led by Justice  Inyang Okoro on Friday in Abuja unanimously departed from the concurrent decisions of the two lower courts sacking Yusuf to uphold his victory in the March 2023 governorship election.

In a unanimous judgement, Okoro said that the court had set aside the decisions of the Court of Appeal on the two prime issues on which it anchored its decision to sack Yusuf as governor.

The Police had earlier warned against wild celebrations that could lead to loss of lives and property.

Some residents of Kano lauded the Supreme Court for standing by the truth and not yielding to any influence in deciding the appeal filed by Gov. Abba Yusuf of Kano State.

A resident of Tarauni, Alhaji Hussaini Abdullahi, said the judgment delivered by the supreme court justices was commendable and a plus for the Nigerian judiciary.

”I am very proud of our judiciary as it has demonstrated that it remains the last hope of the common man,” he said.

Also, Alhaji Musa Ishayaku of Ahmadu Bello way in Kano, said that the supreme court verdict had restored the hope of ordinary Nigerians in the judiciary.

”I’ve every reason to thank God and to appreciate our judiciary for standing by the truth and for not yielding to any influence, it shows that we can still be proud of our judiciary in this country,” Ishaku said.

Another resident, Hajiya Rakiya Musa of Hotoro Quarters said: “The Glory of the victory of this election petition is to God Almighty, I want to thank the legal team that has represented Gov. Yusuf for a job well-done.”

Mr Musa Abu, a resident of Hadeja road, enjoined the governor to put the legal distractions behind and focus on selfless approach to governance in the interest of every resident of the state, irrespective of party affiliations.

“My advice to Gov. Yusuf is that this has ended now, let him carry everybody on board to move Kano State to greater heights, let us work together for the upliftment of Kano State.

”I don’t doubt his love for the state, he has served the state diligently, let him move on, let us work together and work for this state.”

Abu also commended the justices of the supreme court for “a sound and faultless” judgment on the Kano state governorship election petition.

According to Isiyaku Mohammed, another resident, the supreme court has saved the state from violence.

“If the decision had gone not in favour of Abba, even the security agencies may not be able to contain the situation, but with what you are seeing now, there is relief all over, residents are spontaneously coming out to celebrate and tension and violence have been averted.

“In markets initially closed in the early hours of the day, like the Rimi and Kantin Kwari markets, people have started opening their shops and places of business,” he said.

  • Reactions trail Supreme Court verdict affirming Yusuf as Kano Gov

Reactions trail Supreme Court verdict affirming Yusuf as Kano Gov

Reactions have continued to trail the judgement of the Supreme Court, which affirmed Abba Kabir Yusuf as the bonafide Governor of Kano State.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the Supreme Court reinstated Yusuf’s election on Friday, after loosing at the lower courts.

Reacting, 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, assumed that the Supreme Court judgement for Kano was thus delivered over fear of dire consequences.

“They’ve affirmed Kano for NNPP not because wanted to but because they dread the consequences,” Sowore stated.

TNG reports the Supreme Court delivered some landmark judgements today, which have been described as not just face-saving but a redemption of the cliche that the judiciary is the last hope of the common man.

In all the States where it seemed the ruling party has planned a political heist, the Supreme Court has ruled otherwise.

There had been tension and fears for the nation not to be thrown into a crisis situation, especially in Kano State.

Supreme Court judgement averted crisis in Kano – NNPP

The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in Lagos State on Friday, lauded the Supreme Court’s ruling reinstating Gov. Abba Yusuf of Kano, after loosing at lower courts.

The Lagos State NNPP Secretary, Mr Sheriff Oladejo, said the apex court had reaffirmed that only electorate determined who ruled over the people.

Oladejo said: “The Supreme Court has done justices to the governorship election petitions, we give glory to almighty God for this overwhelming and unanimous decision of the highest court in the land.

“For some of us, we are extremely surprised by the decisions of the two lower courts for the miscarriage of justices but Justice Okoro-led five man panel has done justice to this case.

“Even, in his ruling, he also scolded the lower courts for what he described as voyage of discovery on the membership of Gov. Abba Yusuf to NNPP; because ordinarily, it is a matter for political parties to determine who their members are.

“The good people of this country and particularly voters in Kano state knew who they voted for and who deserved to be their governor.”

The party’s scribe commended the courage and commitment of the judiciary in reinstating Yusuf and averting serious political crisis in  Kano state.

According to him, the ruling put to rest, all  litigations against Yusuf’s mandate and also restore absolute confidence in the state government to provide most needed dividends of democracy to the people.

“We use this medium to thank all members of NNPP family and the general public for the remaining resolute in claiming our mandate.

“This will restore our hope and aspirations to do more for the good people of Kano state.

“This is the time for the opposition political parties to join hands with the governor to move the state forward,” he said.

The Joint Action for Good Governance (JAGG) and a Chieftain of  New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) have applauded the  Supreme Court’s ruling reinstating Governor Yusuf of Kano.

In separate interviews on Friday, the advocacy group and the NNPP stalwart said the reinstatement of the lone NNPP governor in the federation had further added to the credibility of the nation’s apex court.

The National Vice President of JAGG, Mr Abdulwaheed Odunuga told NAN that the ruling of the Supreme Court was a relief to many stakeholders in the nation.

“I am thrilled and relieved by the recent decision of the Supreme Court to reverse the sack of  Yusuf by lower courts, and affirm his election as Kano governor.

“This judgment has not only reinstated the victory of  Yusuf but has also vindicated the integrity of the electoral process.

“It is noteworthy that the court emphasised that the lower courts were wrong in deducting votes based on technicalities related to the signing and stamping of ballot papers.

“This ruling reinforces the principle that substantial compliance with electoral laws should be prioritised over minor procedural irregularities,” Odunuga said.

According to him, as someone who has been actively involved in the NNPP and contested for the Federal House of Representatives in Kosofe, the verdict brings a sense of encouragement and optimism for the democratic process.

He added: “It reaffirms our belief in the rule of law and the capacity of the judiciary to correct perceived errors in electoral disputes.

“I commend the Supreme Court for its thorough and unbiased approach in delivering justice. It is my hope that this judgment will contribute to strengthening our electoral system and inspire confidence in the minds of the electorate.

“As we celebrate this victory, let us continue to uphold the principles of democracy and work toward a more transparent and accountable political environment.”

In his reaction,  Mr Adekunle Aderibigbe,  NNPP chieftain in Lagos state said the decision of the Supreme Court had again, boosted the morale and confidence of the people of Nigeria in the  justice system.

Aderibigbe said: It is heartening to see the Supreme Court uphold the democratic process by carefully reviewing and rectifying what appeared to be an erroneous decision by the Court of Appeal.

“The judicial system plays a crucial role in safeguarding the integrity of elections, and the apex court’s determination to restore the deducted votes and reaffirm Yusuf’s victory reflects a commitment to fairness and justice.

“This meticulous scrutiny ensures that electoral outcomes are determined based on accurate legal principles and not arbitrary decisions.”

According to him, the Supreme Court’s rejection of the Court of Appeal’s ruling regarding Yusuf’s party membership was a significant point.

He said the apex court rightly asserted that matters related to nomination and sponsorship are pre-election issues and fall outside its jurisdiction.

“This reaffirmation underscores the importance of adhering to legal procedures and recognising the delineation between pre-election and post-election matters,” he said.

The Supreme Court on Friday upheld the  election of  Yusuf as duly elected governor of Kano state.

The apex court set aside the verdicts of the Court of Appeal and Kano state Election Petitions Tribunal, which nullified the victory of Yusuf in the March 18, 2023 governorship poll.

A five-member panel of the apex court in a judgment delivered by Justice John Okor, held that the tribunal and the court of appeal erred by sacking  Yusuf as governor of the state.

Yusuf and NNPP had filed an appeal against the judgment of the Court of Appeal, which had affirmed his sacking as earlier pronounced by the Kano State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal.

The tribunal had sacked Yusuf and ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withdraw his certificate of return and instead, issue same to Nasir Yusuf Gawuna, the candidate of the APC in the March 18, 2023 governorship election.

However, not satisfied with the Tribunal judgment, Yusuf had approached the Appeal Court.

But the appellate court had while affirming his sack, further held that the governor was not a member of the party as of the time of the election and could not have been said to have been properly sponsored for the election.
