The clarification was made on Friday in Kano in a joint news conference by the Commissioner for Information, Malam Baba Dantiye; Accountant General, Abdukadir Abdulsalam, and Head of Service (HoS), Usman Bala-Muhammad.

The HoS explained that the 10,800 workers were not sacked, but only had their salaries stopped pending verification of their status.

“Let me make it categorically clear that no staff was retrenched. Their salaries were stopped to cleanse the system because of some allegations.

“A verification committee will soon be set up and after the exercise those employed legally through laid down civil service rules will receive their salaries.”

According to him, the essence is to optimise the civil service for better service delivery and place everything in the right perspective.

In his comment, Dantiye said the government appreciated civil servants and pensioners in the state for their patience and the happiness they showed when their June salaries were paid without deductions.

The Accountant General said while answering questions that Gov. Abba Yusuf ordered his office to stop the salaries of the 10,800 workers employed by Ganduje.

Abdulsalam said that the committee to be set up would review the procedures for their engagement so as to remove those illegally recruited.

According to him, the previous administration only engaged and promoted workers at the end of its tenure.

Concerning local government workers, Abdusalam assured that those who were converted to state workers by the former administration would continue to receive their salaries.

The accountant general said that what the new government has done so far is to attempt to correct the system for effective service delivery.

More structures against Islamic values will be pulled down – Kano govt

The Kano State Government has explained why it demolished the Government House Roundabout which was done by the previous administration of Abdullahi Ganduje.

Dr. Baffa Bichi, Secretary to the State Government, noted that  the monument put in place to commemorate Kano’s Golden Jubilee was pulled down over a visible Christian symbol on it.

Baffa, a former Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Chairman at Bayero University, Kano, and former Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, TETFund, said it was totally wrong for such a Christian symbol to appear in a public structure in Kano whose indigenes are almost 100 per cent Muslims.

He added that there are other plans to remove the Christian symbol on the Muhammadu Buhari interchange at Hotoro, adding that the demolished roundabout was also obstructing the free flow of traffic.

“The roundabout was obstructing the view of motorists, and secondly, if you use a drone camera, you will see that the roundabout has a large design of a cross on top of it.

“And over 99.9 or 100 percent of Kano indigenes are Muslims. So you can’t have a structure with a large inscription of the cross on it. It’s against Islamic values.

“Our clerics told us that whenever our beloved Prophet Muhammad saw anything, no matter how little, with a sign of the cross on it, he would ensure that such a thing is destroyed.

“Even the Muhammadu Buhari underpass in Hotoro has a similar design, and I can assure you that plans are underway to make sure those symbols are removed from the bridge.”

Speaking further on the ongoing demolitions across different parts of the state, Dr Bichi said officials of the previous administration illegally acquired the structures.

He maintained that the government would only compensate people with genuine proof of ownership documents.

“Anyone who is defending the encroachment of public institutions like hospitals, schools and Eid grounds is sick and needs medical attention.

“If you encroached on government land and the government collected it back, there is no way you could claim any compensation.

“All these structures we are demolishing were illegally acquired and shared among officials of the outgone administration.

“So, anyone demanding compensation should go and meet the person that sold the properties to them, because the monies were never remitted into the government account.

“If government collects your property to build infrastructure for the masses, it is obligatory that such individuals would be compensated but that’s not the case here,” Baffa stressed.

He further added that the present government is working to recover stolen government assets and properties sold outside the state.

HOR: Majority leader, Doguwa cleared of murder charges

The Kano State Ministry of Justice, Department of Public Prosecution, DPP, has cleared the House of Representatives Majority Leader Alhassan Ado Doguwa of murder charges.

According to DPP, there is no substantive evidence found from the police case files to charge him with culpable homicide.

Kano State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice Musa A. Lawan, indicated on Thursday while briefing journalists on the findings and legal recommendations of the government on the criminal charges filed against the lawmaker that available evidence contained in the police case diary indicated no sufficient evidence to link Doguwa with the said offences despite contradictory comments of witnesses against the suspect.

“Based on the foregoing facts and observations, we are of the opinion that we cannot substantiate charges of criminal conspiracy, mischief by fire and culpable homicide against the Doguwa.

“This is because we cannot find sufficient evidence to link with the said offences considering the fact that we are faced with so many inculpatory and exculpatory evidence for and against him. And the statements of those that implicated him were full of contradictions,” he said.

He added that there was no proven medical evidence to prove that the act or omission of Doguwa caused the death of the deceased persons.

Barr. Lawan added that apart from the contradictory comments, there was no medical evidence to prove that the act or omission of Doguwa caused the death of the deceased persons.
