    Kano PDP faction joins NNPP

    A faction of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Kano State has dumped the party for the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).

    This is contained in a statement by Sunusi Dawakin Tofa, Spokesman of the NNPP Campaign Council, on Sunday in Kano.

    The statement said the decampees were received into the fold of the NNPP by its National Chairman,  Prof. Rufa’i Alkali and the party’s presidential candidate running mate, Isaac Idahosa, at a ceremony held in Kano.

    It quoted the PDP factional leader, Shehu Sagagi as saying that they dumped the party due to lack of internal democracy and nepotism by its national leadership.

    Sagagi said that he defected alongside 36 state executive members, over 700 local government executives, 8,000 ward executives, 44 national delegates and 1,452 ward delegates.

    “Politics is a game of numbers, we are optimistic that the NNPP Presidential Candidate, Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso will take us to victory at both national and state level.

    “The PDP sabotaged itself in states like Kano by allowing the likes of Sen. Kwankwaso to defect in spite of his massive followership not only in the state but the nation at large.

    “To us this is a home coming, we are real politicians and we have joined a political party that plays real politics.

    “I am happy to rejoin Sen. Kwankwaso once again a year after our departure,” Sagagi was quoted as saying in the statement.

    The statement also quoted Alkali as congratulating the decampees for the wise decision to join the NNPP.

    It further quoted Idahosa as saying that the NNPP with its massive support and historic defection would emerged victorious at the polls.

    NNPP will record landslide victory in Kano – Bichi

    Meanwhile, Dr Bappa Bichi, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) Senatorial candidate for Kano North has said the party will record a landslide victory in the 2023 general election in the State.

    Bichi stated this at a news conference attended on Sunday in Kano by the NNPP governorship candidate, Abba Kabir-Yusuf, national and state assembly candidates of the party.

    Bichi said the massive support being enjoyed by the party was a pointer to its victory in the upcoming elections in the state.

    ”The presidential candidate of the party, Rabiu Kwankwasu, had a track record of unprecedented accomplishments during his days as the Kano State governor to show for the candidates contesting elections.

    ”We have set in motion various political strategies that would enable our candidates at all levels to win all elective positions in Kano State.

    ”Our house-to-house mobilisation is paying as we have so far visited 40 local government areas mobiliing supporters to massively vote for our candidates,” he said.

    Bichi lauded President Muhammadu Buhari for his commitment towards conducting free, fair and credible election in the country.

    He, however, expressed dismay over the alleged arrest of 100 supporters of the NNPP by the police, and urged security agencies to exercise caution in monitoring political situation in the state.

    Reacting, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mamman Dauda said that operatives of the command arrested  suspected thugs across the State.

    He said the suspects posed threats to the peaceful election processes in the state.

    ”We have in our custody supporters of the All Progressive Congress (APC), People’s Democratic Party (PDP), New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) among others.

    ”We will provide a level playing ground for all political parties before, during and after the implementation of electoral process,” he said.

    Newborn dumped in pit toilet rescued

    The Kano State Fire Service on Wednesday said it rescued a newborn baby thrown inside a latrine by an alleged mentally challenged mother, (name withheld) at Sabon Titi quarters, Gidan Kankara in Kano.

    This is contained in a statement by the Public Relations Officer of Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Saminu Abdullahi, who said that the incident occurred on Wednesday morning.

    He said that the service received a distress call from a member of its staff, Ibrahim Umar-Muhammad, around 10:49 a.m. and immediately dispatched a rescue team to the scene.

    He added that, “upon receiving the information, we quickly dispatched our rescue team and a vehicle to the scene at about 10:54 a.m.

    According to the statement, Muhammed said that the mentally challenged mother, who also had another six year old daughter, gave birth to the newborn and dumped the baby in a latrine.

    “Fortunately, the six year old daughter quickly raised an alarm on her mother’s act and with good efforts of neighbors and firemen, the baby was rescued alive.

    He said the mother was handed over to her grandfather, Abubakar Umar-Usman of Sabon Titi quarters to take the newborn to hospital for medical attention.

    He alleged that incident might have resulted from the a suspicion that the newborn came out of wedlock.

    Police arrests ‘Journalists’ for buying rice with fake bank transfer

    The Kano State Police Command has arrested two men, who claimed to be journalists, for allegedly defrauding a rice trader of N33,000.

    The 30-year-old suspects, Mujahid Kabir and Abba Imam, were alleged to have, on February 2, 2023, generated a fake bank transfer alert of N33,000 to buy a bag of rice at a Plaza at Sharada Quarters, Kano Municipal Local Government Area, Kano State

    The state police spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, who disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, said, “On 2nd February 2023 at about 1700hrs, a report was received from the Manager of a Plaza at Sharada Quarters, Kano Municipal LGA, Kano State that, two people went to their Plaza, purchased a bag of rice at N33,000 and generated a fake bank transfer alert to them.

    “On receipt of the report, the Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command CP Mamman Dauda, psc(+) raised and instructed a team of detectives led by SP Abdulrahim Adamu, Divisional Police Officer, Sharada Division to arrest the culprits.

    “The team immediately proceeded to the scene and arrested the two suspects while trying to escape, one Mujahid Kabir, “m”, 30 Years old, of Ahmadu Bello Way and Abba Imam, ‘m’, 30 years old, of Zoo Road Kano. On spot search, the suspects were found in possession of Vision FM Personnel Identity Cards.

    “On preliminary investigation, the suspects confessed to having gone to Vision FM Radio station Kano, stole two personnel Identity Cards and made fake copies bearing their names and photographs. They further confessed to having gone to the said plaza at Sharada Quarters, bought a bag of rice and made a fake transaction with the cashier.

    “The Commissioner of Police directed the case to be transferred to the Command’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for discreet investigation. Suspects will be charged to court upon completion of the investigation.”

    The CP advised residents to be wary of fraudsters and scammers, secure their bank details and report suspicious transactions to their banks.

    Naira redesign: CBN Gov, Emefiele is fighting back – Gov Ganduje

    Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje has alleged Mr Godwin Emefiele, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is fighting back with the Naira redesign policy.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Governor Ganduje made the allegation in a statement on Sunday by his Chief Press Secretary, Abba Anwar.

    Ganduje alleged the untimely implementation of the Naira swap policy was deliberately done by Emeifiele as a fighting back strategy for failing to get the presidential ticket under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

    “The CBN Governor is only doing this to cause confusion in the forthcoming elections for no just reason. He has not been in good mood for long, because he failed to secure the presidential ticket on the platform of our great party, the APC,” Ganduje said.

    Insisting that the Kano State Government and APC in the State are totally against the action of the CBN Governor, the Kano State Governor said “currency redesign is done across the globe, but not in the way we are witnessing in our country. The timing is wrong, the deadline given is very wrong and deliberate”.

    Meanwhile, Anwar in the statement revealed part of the measures taken by the State Government to cushion the effects of the hardship caused by the Naira swap.

    “We will summon bank managers very soon to interrogate the shortage of new Naira notes in banks. They should come over and explain to us, why our people are still suffering over this issue of Naira Swap. And I will go to them individually to supervise what is happening and why.

    “We have a plan in the pipeline to start distributing palliatives very soon across all the 44 local governments, to cushion the effect of the hardship caused by the CBN Governor, to our people,” the statement reads.

    Court dissolves Gov Ganduje’s daughter 16-year marriage

    An Upper Shari’a Court sitting in Kano on Thursday dissolved the 16-year-old marriage between Asiya Ganduje and Inuwa Uba.

    Asiya is a daughter of the Kano State Governor and Inuwa Uba.

    Delivering a ruling, the Judge,  Malam Abdullahi Halliru said the marriage was dissolved through Khul’i (divorce by Islamic means).

    Halliru ordered the plaintiff to return N50,000 paid as dowry by the respondent.

    “The conditions the respondent earlier raised before the court should be based on Islamic Sunnah on Khul’i.

    “Khul’i is strictly based on returning the dowry giving to a woman, the condition should not affect her in anyway especially in giving out her wealth”.

    Earlier, the Petitioner’s Counsel, Ibrahim Aliyu-Nassarawa, told the court that his client insists on returning the N50,000 bride price received from her husband in exchange for divorce.

    The petitioner was in court seeking the dissolution of her marriage through Islamic means (Khul’i) as she claimed to be tired and fed up with Inuwa.

    “Every woman who is living under strange conditions has a right under Islamic law to approach the court and seek for her marriage to be dissolved with the condition to return the dowry.

    Counsel to the respondent, Mr Umar I. Umar, said the issue is beyond the payment of N50,000 dowry.

    “The respondent has four kids with the plaintiff, but all efforts to reconcile them proved abortive” Umar said.

    He gave two conditions regarding some of his belongings, that the plaintiff should return all his client credentials, house certificates, cars and relinquish her rights in their joint rice company before he divorce her.

    Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State on Saturday unveiled the State Anthem to inculcate patriotism and discipline among the citizens.

    Ganduje, who spoke at the inauguration of the State Anthem in Kano, reiterated the readiness of his administration to preserve the historical and cultural heritage of the people of the state.

    “We will dutifully and jealously protect and preserve our good name and the excellence we have recorded in business and scholarship” he said.

    The governor applauded his wife, Hafsat Ganduje, for her ingenuity in kick starting the process that culminated to the development of the State Anthem.

    “I am glad to see that, my dear wife, initiated the idea of the state Anthem, which has now come to fruition. She did well hence our commendation on her.

    “We are here to show love for our state, our culture, our costumes, our history and to appreciate our state in general.

    “Ours is to promote love, deep sense of responsibility and to also show the greatness of our dear state.

    “As our national Anthem is bringing us together for the service and unity of our motherland, so also this state Anthem will follow the same pattern at the state level,” he said.

    According to him, the state government will transmit the State Anthem to the State House of Assembly for appropriate legislations.

    “Whenever we have any public function, after singing the National Anthem, the State Anthem will always follow,” he said, adding the Anthem would showcase how the state excels in commerce, traditional leadership, scholarship, agriculture and hospitality.

    Three die, many sick as strange illness hit kano communities

    An infection identified by medical personnel as diphtheria as hit communities in Kano leaving about three persons dead.

    The number of persons infected with the disease rose from 25 to 100 in just about two weeks.

    Reports  say Three persons in 13 local government areas of the state have given up the ghost in different communities in the state while some are still battling with it.

    This was made known by the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Aminu Ibrahim Tsanyawa,  during the press conference on Diphtheria and Lassa fever outbreaks in the state.

    He said the epidemiology unit of the ministry was notified by Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital and Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital of the suspected cases of Diphtheria, prompting the ministry to mobilize its team to commence investigation.

    “As at 20th of January 2023 we have recorded 100 suspected cases from 13 local government areas which are Ungogo, Nassarawa, Bichi, Dala, Dawakin Tofa, Dawakin Kudu, Fagge, Gwale, Kano Municipal, Kumbotso, Rano, and Gwarzo respectively, Of the 100 suspected cases, 8 were confirmed, while waiting more results. We have lost 3 among 8 confirmed and 22 among other suspected cases,” he added.

    Tsanyawa further said currently 27 patients are receiving treatment while 41 have been managed and discharged successfully.

    The commissioner also said on 10 January, the Public Health Emergency Operation Center received a report of suspected case of Lassa fever from Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital.

    He said a team was deployed to investigate and samples were taken for laboratory tests before they returned positive three days later.

    “10 samples were taken from the high-risk contacts of the index case, 3 become positive making a total of 4 cases currently managed at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital isolation center,” Dr. Tsanyawa said.

    The commissioner also said the Kano State Government activated the Kwanar Dawaki Isolation Center for isolating the Lassa fever cases, adding that staff of ‘Yargaya have been trained and transferred to the isolation center with drugs and consumables.

    He pointed out that the ministry, through the primary health care management board, is planning to conduct a routine immunization intensification campaign to reach out to all eligible children in the affected local government areas.

    Diphtheria is a serious infection caused by strains of bacteria called Corynebacterium diphtheriae that make toxin. It can lead to difficulty breathing, heart rhythm problems, and even death. CDC recommends vaccines for infants, children, teens, and adults to prevent diphtheria.

    The Kano State Government has confirmed the outbreak of Diphtheria in 13 Local Government Areas of the state.

    The state commissioner for Health, Dr Aminu Tsanyawa, stated this at a briefing on Diphtheria and Lassa fever outbreaks in the state on Saturday.

    He said that 100 suspected cases have been recorded out of which three have died.

    “As at 20th of January 2023 we we have recorded 100 suspected cases from 13 local government areas.

    ”Ungogo, Nassarawa, Bichi, Dala, Dawakin Tofa, Dawakin Kudu, Fagge, Gwale, Kano Municipal, Kumbotso, Kiru, Rano, and Gwarzo.

    ”Out of the 100 suspected cases, eight were confirmed, while we are awaiting more results.

    “We have lost three lives among the eight confirmed cases.”

    Tsanyawa said currently 27 patients were on admission receiving treatment while 41 have been managed and discharged.

    The commissioner noted that on the Jan. 10, the public Health Emergency operation center received a report of suspected case of Lassa fever from Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital, Kano.

    He said that a team was deployed to investigate, sample was taken for laboratory test and three days later the result turned positive for Lassa fever.

    “10 samples were taken from the high-risk contacts of the index case, 3 become positive making a total of 4 cases which is currently managed at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital isolation center,”Tsanyawa said.

    The commissioner maintained that Kano state government had activated Kwanar Dawaki isolation center for isolating the Lassa fever cases.

    He added that medical personnel have been trained and transferred to the isolation center where drugs and consumables were propositioned and is fully functional.

    He pointed out that the state would conduct a Routine immunisation campaign to the affected local government areas.

    Nigerians placed on alert as new disease scare hits Lagos, Kano

    The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has placed Nigerians on alert, following response to reports of diphtheria cases in Lagos and Kano States.

    This is contained in a public health advisory signed by NCDC Director -General, Dr Ifedayo Adetifa, issued on Friday.

    The director-general said that the centre is also monitoring the situation in Osun and Yobe.

    Adetifa also urged healthcare workers to maintain a high index of suspicion for diphtheria by being vigilant and looking out for symptoms of  the infection.

    The centre further urged Nigerians to ensure that their wards are fully vaccinated against diphtheria with three doses of the pentavalent vaccine as recommended in the country’s childhood immunisation schedule.

    Adetifa said Kano state has 78 suspected cases of the highly contagious bacterial infection  in 14 local government areas of the state.

    The state government said that 27 samples had been taken to the laboratory out of which eight were confirmed positive and three deaths were registered in the state.

    Adetifa said that diphtheria is a serious bacterial infection caused by the bacterium called Corynebacterium species that affects the nose, throat and sometimes, skin of an individual.

    According to the NCDC, the symptoms of diphtheria include; fever, runny nose, sore throat, cough, red eyes (conjunctivitis) , and neck swelling.

    “In severe cases, a thick grey or white patch appears on the tonsils and/or at the back of the throat associated with difficulty breathing,” he said.

    He said that the agency’s is also monitoring the situation in Osun and Yobe states where cases were now being picked up.

    “Data from the Kano State Ministry of Health revealed that the diphtheria outbreak has so far killed 25 people with 58 suspected cases and six persons on admission,” he said.

    The NCDC boss-said in addition to clinically suspected cases, there have been laboratory-confirmed cases, and the NCDC is working with state ministries of health and partners to enhance surveillance and response to the outbreak.

    He said people most at risk of contracting diphtheria are: children and adults who have not received any or a single dose of the pentavalent vaccine (a diphtheria toxoid-containing vaccine).

    Ithers, he said, are people who live in a crowded environment, people who live in areas with poor sanitation and healthcare workers and others who are exposed to suspected/confirmed cases of diphtheria.

    The NCDC director-general said that diphtheria spreads easily between people through; direct contact with infected people, droplets from coughing or sneezing, and contact with contaminated clothing and objects.

    “Individuals with signs and symptoms suggestive of diphtheria were also advised to isolate themselves and notify the local government area , state disease surveillance officer (DSNO) or the NCDC.,” he said.

    The Kano State Police Command said no life was lost during the fire outbreak that occurred on Saturday afternoon at the headquarters of the Command.

    The Command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Abdullahi Haruna-Kiyawa, confirmed the incident in a statement issued to newsmen in Kano.

    “Fire engulfed the first floor of the Kano State Police Command’s Headquarters, Bompai Administrative Block.

    “Offices razed by the inferno include Provost Office, DC Finance and Admin Office, AC Admin Office, AC Operations Office, Finance Offices and PPRO’s Office, among others. But Command’s records are in tact.

    “No life was lost and no injury was recorded. The fire was brought under control by firefighters,” the statement said.

    The statement said that the Deputy Governor of Kano State, Dr Nasiru Gawuna, visited the scene, to sympathize with the police, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the AIG Zone 1 who was also present at the scene.

    “CP Mamman Dauda and officers and men of Kano Police Command, and on behalf of Kano State Government promised to assist,” the statement said.

    On his part, Kano State Fire Service Spokesman, Alhaji Saminu Abdullahi, confirmed the incident, saying the cause of the fire is under investigation.
