Embrace unity for national integration – Ganduje to Nigerians

Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State has called for unity among various ethnic and religious groups in the country, to enhance national integration.

Ganduje made the call on Saturday while receiving a chieftancy title at Olomu Community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta.

The governor and his wife, Prof. Hafsat Ganduje, were conferred with chieftancy titles by the Ohworode of Olomu kingdom, Richard Ogbon, Ovie Ogoni-Oghoro 1.

It was gathered that Ganduje was conferred with the title of Ejerukugbe, meaning let’s work together, while his wife was conferred with the Omarmoraye title, meaning good woman.

Ganduje said that our differences were our sources of strength, stressing that every ethnic nationality in Nigeria had unique personality which, when properly harnessed, would take the country to a higher level.

“When we help to manage our differences, it will make us great because our differences are sources of our strength.

“This title has taken the national integration to a higher level, it is important we believe in one another, trust, irrespective of the differences in our religion, ethnic or geographic location.

“Today a history has been made, history that is good for the development of our nation,” he said.

The governor recalled that former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon created and implemented the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) policy to institunalise the national integration in 1973.

According to him, as a student at the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria in 1973, some of them reacted negatively while some demonstrated in favour of the policy, unknowing that it was a policy to institutionalise national integration.

“I was posted to the defunct Bendel State in 1975 as a corps member and I served in Isoko. We were coming to Warri, being the commercial town in the Delta axis.

“It was interesting, the people were praying and giving us various foods at not cost. So, I am in love with the Urhobos, Isokos and Itsekiris. Even when I left, we were still exchanging pleasantries,” he said.

Ganduje said that the chieftancy title was a reflection of the robust relationship he had with the late General Dominic Oneya, former Kano State Military Administrator, native of Agbarho Community in Ughelli North Local Government Area.

“No doubt, this chieftancy title, there is a history behind it. When late General Oneya was posted to Kano State, he dissolved the cabinet and retained me in his cabinet.

“He was friendly, hardworking and we were so close. I maintain good relationship with Urhobos.

“To make the relationship complete, I appointed Oneya’s son as my Special Adviser in charge of Lagos State Affairs. This is how Nigeria can be promoted through national integration.

“What has happened today confirmed that there is good relationship between the people Kano State and Delta. In particular, a good relationship between Hausa/Fulani and the Urhobos, so we thank the king for the conferment of titles.

Speaking with newsmen, the commissioner for information in Kano State, Muhammad Garba, said that the conferrment was and indication that Nigerians needed to unite.

“For the king to have invited the governor and conferred the chieftaincy title on him, and for the governor to have accepted, is an indication that we should appreciate our diversity.

“An indication that we need one and another to progress. I am happy with the installation and hoping that it will further facilitate the relationship between the North and South.

“This conferrment will further facilitate the relationship between the Urhobos, the entire People of Delta and Kano State. I assured you that this is the beginning of our relationship with the people of this area,” he said.

Mr Anthony Oneya, son of late General Oneya, described Gov. Ganduje as detribalised Nigerian who always worked for the unity of the country, adding that he operated an open door policy.

“The governor appointed me as his Special Adviser on Lagos Affairs. As a non-indigene, he deemed it fit to make me an SA, to always give him reports monthly about activities of the Kano people living in Lagos State.

“With this title, we have come to honour the governor for finding ways to unify Nigerians. I knew the governor as a child growing up when my father was a military governor of Kano State,” he said.

Mr Fred Akhigbe, the Enojie of Edo Community in Kano State, said that the title was an indication that Nigerians would continue to unite.

“Though tribe and tongues may differ, but in brotherhood we stand,” he said.
In the governor’s entourage were members of his cabinet, traditional rulers and representation of the various ethnic groups in Kano State.

  • Jonathan says teamwork between public office holders critical to democracy and good governance

Jonathan says teamwork between public office holders critical to democracy and good governance

Former President Goodluck Jonathan says a good working relationship between a Deputy Governor, Governor, President and Vice- President is critical to democracy and good governance.

Jonathan made this known on Tuesday in Abuja at the launch of a book titled:” Deputising and Governance in Nigeria” written by Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State.

The former president said this is critical to avoid issues that usually crop up after either the candidate or the party might have selected the running mate.

“To address the issue of presidential and governorship running mates both candidates should contest the party’s ticket at primary.

“For you to qualify to run for the primaries as a governorship candidate, you should run with your deputy, same thing at the federal level,

“For you to run as a president, you need to run with a deputy, if the political parties think that the pair is okay for them and when they vote for that pair, nobody will raise issues after the primaries.

“But here, we are in a situation where issues are being raised after primaries because selection of a Vice-President is becoming a problem.

“I believe, maybe at the state level the selection of the running mate to the governor is also becoming a problem,” the former president said.

He explained that every country amends their laws based on the challenges they were faced with, saying that this was one area that Ganduje raised in his book which should be discussed by Nigerians.

He, however, noted that a good working relationship and understanding between a deputy governor and the governor and the president and Vice-President was critical to a functional democracy and good governance.

Jonathan, who was the chairman of the occasion, said he was pleased to be invited, adding that public office holders had a lot to learn from the book, drawing from Ganduje’s experiences.

“Ganduje did so much detailing the qualities a deputy governor should possess to gain the trust of his principal and the roles the chief executive should play to be able to cultivate a good working relationship in political leadership.

“I believe public office owners have so much to learn from the narratives in the book, especially drawing from Ganduje’s personal experience,” Jonathan said.

The former president also said that the rampant impeachment of Deputy Governors was another grey area that needed to be looked into not just by the National Assembly, but by Nigerians generally.

“I must admit that the issue of the book resonates clearly with experience of Ganduje and myself.
“With both of us sharing a similar political trajectory of having serve as deputy governors at the same time, and eventually taking over from our principals.

“In fact, I got the better of Dr Ganduje in this regard, because I moved on also to become the Vice- President and later become a president,” he said.

He said he was glad that Ganduje had been able to document his experience for the benefits of all.

This, he said, was especially in climes where the relationship between elected political leaders and their deputies had not always been very cordial and where such deputies hardly succeeded their principals.

Jonathan said having worn both shoes, he was in a better position to identify the pressure and friction points and advise on the way forward for harmonious relationship between the principals and their deputies.

This, he said, was critical to to improving our democracy and the lives of citizens.

“The issue of deputy governors and governors is actually something we all need to ponder.

“I remember when we were elected in 1999, in some states the relationship between the Governor-elect and Deputy Governor-elect became frosty even before the inauguration.

“To me, I’m thinking that the National Assembly should look at it,” Jonathan said.

He also said the rampant impeachment of deputy governors who do not appear to agree with their governors on some issues was another grey area that must be looked into by the National Assembly.

Earlier, Ganduje said the publication which chronicled his years of experience in the Nigeria project, was one of the defining moments of his life in public service.

This, he said, was principally as two-term Deputy Governor and presently serving his second and last tenure in office as a governor of Kano State.

“My decision to embark on this imperatively and auspicious project is to share my first-hand experience in this thought provoking, fascinating and worthwhile journey

“The book tells numerous experiences relating to principal and deputy relations in the Nigerian political system, reflecting the successful and evil times,”Ganduje said.

Ganduje said proceeds from the book launch would be invested in his foundation: Ganduje Foundation to positively impact on the lives of the less privileged.

2023: Refrain from religious sentiments, vote for me – Tinubu to Christians

The All Progressives Congress (APC), presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appealed to Christians in the country through the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to refrain from religious sentiment and vote for him in the 2023 presidential election, insisting that he is the best candidate to give Nigeria good leadership.

This appeal was made on Sunday in Kano during an interface with CAN leadership led by the state chairman, Rev. Samuel Adeyemo.

Jagaban as he’s fondly called spoke at Africa House, Government House, Kano, where he reminded the Christian leaders that he is married to a pastor, insisting that his decision for a Muslim-Muslim ticket was never to spite Christians but to ensure that he used the best political formula to win elections.

“Thank you, everyone, here. Thank you, CAN. Thank you, Pastors. I am a unique Muslim because I am married to a Pastor. When I am at home, she is the boss.

“I did not try to Islamise her. We have two bedside lamps, one with the Bible, and the other one with the Holy Quran. I have never seen the two Holy Books change their position or quarrel in the same bedroom.

“We have a country to build. Me, I have an election to win. After winning my primary election, I didn’t look for the ballot papers to know whether those who voted were Muslim or Christian. All I needed was to win, and I won. When I won, I started dancing.

“If you polarise Nigeria along religious lines, we will have bad leadership. We should not fight along religious lines. The way you pray for forgiveness as a Christian is the same way I pray for forgiveness as a Muslim.

“I know you would not want to be an enemy to the winning team. I am a politician, I have a formula, and my formula is to win an election without rigging. I am a minority Muslim from Yoruba, how will I go and chose one Emmanuel from Sokoto…,” Tinubu said.

In his remarks, Kano State Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, commended the Kano CAN leadership for honouring the invitation.

“I thank Kano CAN for honouring this invitation…we have our presidential candidate and former Governor of Lagos state. You know the development in Lagos. Seeing is believing. Therefore, his own is that he is tested, and he can be trusted. His running-mate developed Borno State and the person he handed over to is doing well.

“I am happy that you appreciate our candidate. I am happy that you have endorsed our candidate. So, we thank you for endorsing our candidate.”

In his address, Rev. Adeyemo said they were at Government House at the invitation of Governor Ganduje, who he described as a detribalized leader.

According to him, Kano has remained peaceful under Governor Ganduje, who sees all residents as indigenes of the state.

He said, “CAN Kano has two key responsibilities—to be praying for peace in Kano and Nigeria. We also know that the APC presidential candidate will be doing a lot of traveling for his campaign, and we are praying for his safety.

“We also urge Christians in the state to exercise their civic responsibility during the elections.”

2023: Tinubu throws shade at Atiku in Kano

The All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu on Sunday in Kano declared that he would devote 100% of his time and energy to the service of Nigeria and the people.

Tinubu, at an interactive session with members of the popular Tijjaniyyah sect Sunday afternoon in Kano, said he won’t be a part-time President who will share his time between living in Dubai and Nigeria, adding that he would concentrate his attention and energy on confronting and surmounting Nigeria’s pressing challenges.

In attendance at the session held inside the African Hall of Kano Government House were his running mate, Senator Kashim Shettima, and at least six governors of the party.

Governors at the session included Chairman Progressives Governors’ Forum & Kebbi State Governor Atiku Bagudu, Abdullahi Ganduje (Kano), Abubakar Badaru (Jigawa), Bello Matawalle (Zamfara), Babajide Sanwo-olu (Lagos), former APC Interim Chairman Chief Bisi Akande and some of the party’s National Working Committee members.

At the meeting, members of the Tijjaniyyah sect led by leader, Sheikh Bashir Tijjani Usman Zangon Bareebah, presented a long list of issues the sect wants the APC Presidential candidate to address when he gets to office.

Top on the list are improved electricity, full security, giving agriculture full attention including provision and completion of dams and improved quality education for Nigerians.

While giving their full endorsement and support to the APC presidential ambition, the sect demanded that the Tinubu presidency should ensure inclusion of their members in cabinet and other government appointments, reduction in Hajj fares and assistance in concluding Tijjaniyyah University under construction in Kano.

In his response, Tinubu said the answers to some of the demands were contained in his manifesto unfolded to the whole world on Friday by President Muhammadu Buhari, stressing that he is running to be the president because of his commitment to better the lives of all Nigerians.

In a similar development, the APC Presidential candidate met with business leaders from Northern Nigeria Saturday night in Kano where he assured the business community of a better business environment through implementation of well thought-out policies that will revive dead and ailing manufacturing companies in Kano and across the country.

At a forum to share insights with the Northern business community, business leaders and captains of industry from across the North openly endorsed the APC presidential candidate and his running mate, Senator Kashim Shettima.

At a forum attended by the APC National Chairman, Senator Adamu Abdullahi, Vice Presidential Candidate, Senator Shettima, Governor Ganduje of Kano and seven other governors, the business leaders said with his private sector background, Asíwájú Tinubu would drive the nation’s economy well.
Governor Ganduje said Kano and Lagos have always maintained a long standing relationship which will be strengthened under Tinubu whom he labelled a Kano man.

Ganduje said as governor of Lagos State, Asíwájú ran a pan-Nigeria cabinet that grew the state in all indices of governance and economy.

While assuring the northern business leaders of better business environment with well-thought-out policies that will revitalise industries and open up new opportunities, Tinubu identified the link between Kano as a centre of commerce and his economic plan for Nigeria.

He said: “There is a strong nexus between the place of Kano as a centre of prosperity and my plan for Nigeria. What I pledge is a revamped economy which will renew the hope of our people. Our country needs multiple centres of prosperity, and we intend to achieve that by adding value across all sectors of our economy.

“As I said during my speech at the Arewa House on Monday, Nigeria is sitting on a goldmine. There is no state in Nigeria that is lacking in one resources or the other. We are determined to explore and exploit these resources to the maximum benefits of our people.

“Kano, for example, has huge agricultural potentials and important mineral resources underneath its ground like gold, silver, nickel, tin ore and columbite. Each of these, if properly harnessed, can add significantly to our economy as a country”.

The APC flagbearer added that Kano’s arable land and its comparative advantage in agriculture will be further expanded to make the state and northern region industrial hubs in sub-Saharan Africa.

“The state’s vast arable land and other agricultural potentials, if added to its population will make Kano a force to reckon with in sub-saharan African agro-market. Those who listen to my speech in Kaduna would have heard about my plan for agriculture.

“Aside working with the private sector to make input available that would guarantee greater yield, among other incentives, we will ensure all categories of farmers have easy access to finance through appropriate government and private sector initiatives. We have seen the wonders from the CBN’s Anchor Borrowers Programme, and the Presidential Fertilizer Initiative. We will consolidate on those gains.

“Kano’s famous dams such Tiga, Chalawa Gorge, Thomas, Kusalla, etc that are not being maximally tapped will get special attention from my government. We will invest in the expansion of irrigation land, channelization of the water, among other initiatives that will ensure we cultivate these lands all year round.

“We will not stop in investing and boosting our agricultural potentials, we will add value throughout the value chain. Through Commodity Exchange markets, we will link markets like Dawanau in Kano and Gujungu in Jigawa with international markets and boost return on investment for our farmers.

“The overall aim is to move the nation from import oriented to export oriented economy where grains from Kano will be exported to world market rather than us buying from other countries.

“I know of the commercial exploits of some of you, traders and businessmen in Kwari Textile Market, Sabongari Market, Singer Market and the famous grain market in Dawanau which transacts with the rest of West Africa. These commercial activities alone can provide the state with enough IGR to maintain itself with the right support and policies.

Beyond trading and commerce, I have a special interest in addressing the problem of the dead or comatose Kano industrial estates in Sharada, Bompai, Panshekara, Jogana, etc, which were vibrant in 70s and 80s. We understand the reason why those companies collapsed and we have a plan to revive them and make them competitive.

“We will provide incentives for industrial development nationwide through institutions like the Bank of Industry. There will be a deliberate policy to create industrial hubs and free zones specific to every region. For Kano, we will give attention to agro-allied industries such as textiles, tomato paste, rice processing, animal feeds, etc, in line with the state’s competitive advantages.”

The Kano State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has confirmed that 23 persons lost their lives to flooding and windstorm in 25 local government areas of the state.

Executive Secretary of the Agency, Dr Saleh Jili disclosed this at an event to mark the 2022 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR) in Kano on Friday.

The theme of the Day is “IDDRR Early Warning and Early Action for all # Only Together”.

He said the Day is designed to celebrate those working to save lives, restore hope, build resilience and give them sense of belonging after suffering devastations caused by the disasters.

Jili said the disaster also displaced 20,399 persons, 100 others injured, destroyed 15,000 farmlands and property worth over N2.1 billion in the affected communities from April to date.

He said the Agency also rescued eight people trapped in a collasped building at GSM Market, Beirut Road in Kano metropolis.

Executive Secretary of Adamawa Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA), Malam Suleiman Mohammed, made the disclosure on Friday in Yola.

He blamed the flooding on the release of water from Lagdo Dam in neighbouring Cameroon.

Mohammed said also that the flood destroyed 172,000 farmlands and food crops worth millions of naira.

“Some of the affected local government areas are Numan, Shelleng, Yola South, Yola North, Demsa, Mayo Belwa and Michika,’’ he said.

He added that the agency had provided clothes, foodstuffs, drugs, mosquito nets, blankets and buckets for victims to assuage their suffering.

“The items were donated by the state government, the Federal Government and by other donors,’’ he said.

Mohammed also told that ADSEMA would collaborate with the National Emergency Management Agency to move affected communities to safer areas.

“We will continue to sensitise the communities about the dangers of living in flood-prone areas,’’ he said.

Muhammad Sadiq-Wali, the Kano State governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) says his main target is to restore the lost glory of the state, known as the centre for commerce.

He said this when he spoke with newsmen in Kano on Monday.

“Why I decided to contest for governor is because there is need to bring positive and sustainable change to Kano and Nigeria as a whole. My team is prepared to build the economy through Public Private Partnership (PPP).

”Kano State is private sector driven and most of our citizens are very industries and we need to encourage them. All they need is support from the government.

“If given the mandate my administration will become economically independent and would promote small-scale businesses and local/indigenous industrialisation.

“This was how countries like China developed their economy,” he said.

He said that his administration would come up with policies that will promote local industries and encourage direct foreign investment for the betterment of the state.

He said that he will use his wealth of experience in the private sector to provide quality leadership to the people of the state as well as ensure economic growth through enhanced Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).
